Hydroxyapatite (HA) is widely used in bone repair and regeneration because of its composition and structure similar to human bone. However, the artificially synthesized HA has poor mechanical properties , so it is often necessary to add a second phase to the powder as a supporting phase to enhance its mechanical properties. Strontium (Sr) has the properties of promoting the growth of bone cells, which can increase bone formation in the body and reduce bone self-absorption. Nevertheless, Sr-doped HA composites have been rarely reported in the literature in recent years. In this paper, Sr-doped HA was employed to be complexed with chitosan (CS) for the first time to prepare a composite coating that is dense and uniform, with good adhesion and ductility, in order to expand its clinical applications. Therefore, a series of HA samples doped with different Sr mole fraction (0 mol% (pure HA), 0.5 mol%, 1 mol%, 2 mol%, 4 mol%) were prepared by chemical precipitation method. Then the HA/CS composite coating doped with Sr was prepared on the stainless steel substrate by spin-coating technology. The results showed that Sr 2+ ions had replaced part of Ca 2+ ions and have been successfully doped into the HA lattice. The synthesized HA particles showed a shortrod-like morphology, and the substitution of Sr ions promoted the growth of Sr-doped HA crystals and increased its grain size . In addition, the synthesized Sr-doped HA/CS composite coating is dense and uniform. In vitro cell culture experiments showed that all composite coatings have good biocompatibility. The HA/CS coating with 4 mol% Sr ion doping is more conducive to cell proliferation , adhesion and osteogenic differentiation.

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are considered promising candidates for high-energy-density energy storage. However, the practical application of lithium (Li) metal anodes is highly constrained by the limited ionic conductivity, localized electronic leakage, and poor mechanical stability of their solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Herein, a Li-Sr-N (LSN) anode is fabricated by mechanically rolling Sr3N2 powder with Li foil, forming a LiSrN/Li3N/Li23Sr6/Li heterointerface on the foil surface. As demonstrated by both experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations, the as-constructed heterointerface can actively interact with the fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) molecules in the electrolyte, leading to the in situ formation of a uniform Li3N/LiF/SrF2-hybrid SEI with high ionic conductivity and electronic insulation. With this design, the LSN||LSN symmetric cell exhibits stable cycling performance over 1000 cycles at 1 mA cm−2 and 1 mAh cm−2 in carbonate-based electrolytes. The NCM95||LSN coin-type full cell with an ultrahigh loading cathode (≈18 mg cm−2) achieves 89.6% capacity retention over 100 cycles at 1.0 C (214 mA g−1). Furthermore, the NCM95||LSN pouch cell with a low N/P ratio (≈1.7) and lean electrolyte (≈1.37 g Ah−1) delivers a high energy density of ≈440.8 Wh kg−1 and maintains 91.1% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 0.2 C.

Carbon dioxide reduction reaction on the fuel electrode is critical for CO 2 conversion in solid oxide electrolysis cell, which is a promising technology to utilize CO 2 and store electricity from intermittent renewable resources. This work presents a highly active electrocatalyst , strontium doped lanthanum ferrite (LSF), for direct CO 2 reduction reaction, which is conducted in single cells with La 0.9 Sr 0.1 Ga 0.8 Mg 0.2 O 3 as the electrolyte and La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ as the air electrode. A current density of 0.76 A cm −2 is achieved at 800 °C and 1.5 V when pure CO 2 is electrolyzed. By adding samaria-doped ceria to form composite fuel electrodes, the performance can be effectively improved. The current density increases from 0.76 to 1.06 A cm −2 while the total interfacial polarization resistance decreases from 0.26 to 0.12 Ω cm 2 . Furthermore, LSF exhibits high rate constant for CO 2 reduction reaction, 1.04 × 10 −4 cm s −1 at 700 °C. CO 2 is favorable to form carbonate species on LSF surface, and the existence of carbonate species on LSF surface revealed by Raman spectra technique is further proved by DFT calculations. A proposed CO 2 reduction mechanism is obtained, providing new insights into CO 2 adsorption and dissociation on LSF surface.

Background Ideal bone defect repair scaffolds should be biodegradable, biocompatible, bioactive, porous, and provide adequate mechanical support. However, it is challenging to fabricate such an ideal bone repair scaffold. Previously, we showed that 5 wt.% strontium-doped hydroxyapatite (Sr-HA) scaffolds prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) technology exhibited good biocompatibility. Moreover, unlike pure hydroxyapatite (HA) scaffolds, HA scaffolds containing strontium (Sr) exhibited superior bioactivity, higher proliferation rate of BMSCs and MG-63 osteoblast cells, as well as enhanced BMSCs differentiation. Methods In this study, we prepared pure HA scaffolds and 5 wt.% strontium containing Sr-HA scaffolds by SPS technology without adhesive, ammonium bicarbonate as pore former. Subsequently, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the properties of Sr-HA and HA scaffolds. The ability of the scaffolds to repair bone defects was evaluated using a critical-sized rabbit tibia-bone defect rabbit model. Thirty 3-month-old New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into three groups (blank control group, Sr-HA scaffolds implanted group and HA scaffolds implanted group) with 10 rabbits in each group. These rabbits are sacrificed after 8 weeks and 16 weeks of surgery, and the repair effects of each scaffold were evaluated with X-ray, micro-CT, and HE staining. The three-point bending test was employed to assess the mechanical property of repaired bones. Results XRD pattern indicated that Sr-HA and HA scaffolds possess a similar crystal structure after sintering, and that incorporation of strontium did not form impure phase. SEM showed that the porosity of Sr-HA and HA scaffolds was about 40 %. Universal Testing Machine tests showed that Sr-HA scaffolds had better compressive strength than HA scaffolds. Bone defect was obvious, and the fibrous tissue was formed in the bone defects of rabbits in the blank control group after 8 weeks of surgery. Sr-HA and HA scaffolds enhanced osteointegration of the host bone, and extensive woven bone was formed on the surface of the Sr-HA scaffolds. After 16 weeks, the bone strump became blunt and a small amount of callus was formed in the blank control group. Comparatively, the scaffolds were substantially degraded in the Sr-HA scaffolds implanted group while scaffolds shadows still were observed in the HA implanted group. Bone remodeling and cavity recanalization were completely developed in the Sr-HA scaffolds group. The compressive strength of repaired bone in the Sr-HA scaffolds implantation group was higher than that of HA scaffolds implantation group after 8 weeks and 16 weeks of surgery. Conclusions Our results show that the Sr-HA composite scaffolds can effectively repair bone defects and have good biodegradable properties.

Acellular porcine aorta (APA) is an excellent candidate for an implanted scaffold but needs to be modified with appropriate cross-linking agent to increase its mechanical property and storage time in vitro as well as to give itself some bioactivities and eliminate its antigenicity for acting as a novel esophageal prosthesis. In this paper, a polysaccharide crosslinker (oxidized chitosan, OCS) was prepared by oxidizing chitosan using NaIO 4 and further used to fix APA to prepare a novel esophageal prosthesis (scaffold). And then the surface modification with dopamine (DOPA) and strontium-doped calcium polyphosphate (SCPP) were performed one after another to prepare DOPA/OCS-APA and SCPP-DOPA/OCS-APA to improve the biocompatibility and inhibit inflammation of the scaffolds. The results showed that the OCS with a feeding ratio of 1.5:1.0 and a reaction time of 24 h had a suitable molecular weight and oxidation degree, almost no cytotoxicity and good cross-linking effect. Compared with glutaraldehyde (GA) and genipin (GP), OCS-fixed APA could provide a more suitable microenvironment for cell proliferation. The vital cross-linking characteristics and cytocompatibility of SCPP-DOPA/OCS-APA were evaluated. Results suggested that SCPP-DOPA/OCS-APA exhibited suitable mechanical properties, excellent resistance to enzymatic degradation/acid degradation, suitable hydrophilicity, and the ability to promote the proliferation of Human normal esophageal epithelial cells (HEECs) and inhibit inflammation in vitro. In vivo tests also confirmed that SCPP-DOPA/OCS-APA could diminish the immunological response to samples and had a positive impact on bioactivity and anti-inflammatory. In conclusion, SCPP-DOPA/OCS-APA could act as an effective, bioactive artificial esophageal scaffold and be expected to be used for clinical in the future.

Removing long-chain ligands on the surface of perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) is a promising strategy to facilitate charge transport towards a high-performance perovskite light-emitting diode (PeLED). However, perovskite NCs , especially CsPbI 3 NCs, tend to decompose in the ligand removal procedure due to their poor stability of perovskite NCs and high polarity of solvents. Here, we report Sr 2+ -doped CsPbI 3 NCs that were synthesized by a modified hot injection method. These NCs show enhanced stability and near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY, 99.8%). More importantly, the CsPbI 3 :Sr 2+ NCs still maintain a high PLQY (97.5%) after removing surface ligands by a polar solvent (ethyl acetate, EA). Furthermore, a mixture of EA and octane was used to prepare smooth and dense CsPbI 3 :Sr 2+ NC films with an exceedingly high PLQY of 73.2% and a high stability under ambient conditions. Finally, the red-emitting CsPbI 3 :1.8% Sr 2+ PeLEDs demonstrate a world-record peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 17.1%.

Strontium-doped mesoporous bioactive glass microspheres (Sr-MBGMs) were prepared by sol–gel method for delivering loxoprofen sodium (LX) drug. The loading capacity of the prepared Sr-MBGMs for LX drug was affected by the initial concentration of the drug solution and adsorption time. The LX-loaded Sr-MBGMs obtained under optimum conditions were coated with polydopamine (LX/Sr-MBGMs@PDA) and incorporated into the aminated modified poly-l-lactic acid nanofibrous matrix to develop a functional composite scaffold for bone tissue engineering applications. The in vitro studies revealed that the incorporation of the LX/Sr-MBGMs@PDA could promote cell proliferation and biomineralization, indicating that the as-developed composite scaffolds possessed an improved cell viability and osteogenic ability.

Nanostructured calcium phosphate porous microspheres are of great potential in drug delivery and bone regeneration due to their large specific surface area, biocompatibility, and similarity to inorganic component of osseous tissue. In this work, strontium (Sr)-doped amorphous calcium phosphate porous microspheres (SrAPMs) were synthesized through a microwave-hydrothermal method using fructose 1,6-bisphosphate trisodium salt as the source of phosphate ions. The SrAPMs showed a mesoporous structure and a relatively high specific area. Compared with the hydroxyapatite nanorods prepared by using Na2HPO4·12H2O as the phosphorus source, the SrAPMs with a higher specific surface area were more effective in drug loading using vancomycin as the antiobiotics of choice and consequently having a higher antibacterial efficiency both on agar plates and in broths. Furthermore, to assess the potential application of SrAPMs in bone defect repair, a novel biomimetic bone tissue-engineering scaffold consisting of collagen (Coll) and SrAPMs was constructed using a freeze-drying fabrication process. Incorporation of the SrAPMs not only improved the mechanical properties, but also enhanced the osteogenesis of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. The in vivo experiments demonstrated that the SrAPMs/Coll scaffolds remarkably enhanced new bone formation compared with the Coll and APMs/Coll scaffolds in a rat critical-sized calvarial defect model at 8 weeks postimplantation. In summary, SrAPMs developed in this work are promising as antibiotic carriers and may encourage bone formation when combined with collagen.

An depth understanding of the fundamental interactions between surface termination and catalytic activity is crucial to prompt the properties of functional perovskite materials. The elastic energy due to size mismatch and electrostatic attraction of the charged Sr dopant by positively charged oxygen vacancies induced inert A-site surface enrichment rearrangement for perovskites. Lower temperatures could reduce A-site enrichment, but it is difficult to form perovskite crystals. La 0.8 Sr 0.2 CoO 3-δ (LSCO) as a model perovskite oxide was modified with additive urea to reduce the crystallization temperature , and suppress Sr segregation. The LSCO catalysts with 600 °C annealing temperature (LSCO-600) exhibited a 19.4-fold reaction reactivity of toluene oxidation than that with 800 °C annealing temperature (LSCO-800). Combined surface-sensitive and depth-resolved techniques for surface and sub-surface analysis, surface Sr enrichment was effectively suppressed due to decreased oxygen vacancy concentration and smaller electrostatic driving force. DFT calculations and in-situ DRIFTs spectra well revealed that tuning the surface composition/termination affected the intrinsic reactivity. The catalyst surface with lower Sr enrichment could easily adsorb toluene, cleave, and decompose benzene rings , thus contributing to toluene degradation to CO 2 . This work demonstrates a green and efficient way to control surface composition and termination at the atomic scale for higher catalytic activity.

Membranes play pivotal role in guided bone regeneration (GBR) technique for reconstruction alveolar bone. GBR membrane that is able to stimulate both osteogenic and angiogenic differentiation of cells may be more effective in clinic practice. Herein, we fabricated the Sr-doped calcium phosphate/polycaprolactone/chitosan (Sr-CaP/PCL/CS) nanohybrid fibrous membrane by incorporating 20 wt% bioactive Sr-CaP nanoparticles into PCL/CS matrix via one-step electrospinning method, in order to endow the membrane with stimulation of osteogenesis and angiogenesis. The physicochemical properties, mechanical properties, Sr2+ release behavior, and the membrane stimulate bone mesenchymal stem cell (BMSCs) differentiation were evaluated in comparison with PCL/CS and CaP/PCL/CS membranes. The SEM images revealed that the nanocomposite membrane mimicked the extracellular matrix structure. The release curve presented a 28-day long continuous release of Sr2+ and concentration which was certified in an optimal range for positive biological effects at each timepoint. The in vitro cell culture experiments certified that the Sr-CaP/PCL/CS membrane enjoyed excellent biocompatibility and remarkably promoted rat bone mesenchymal stem cell (BMSCs) adhesion and proliferation. In terms of osteogenic differentiation, BMSCs seeded on the Sr-CaP/PCL/CS membrane showed a higher ALP activity level and a better matrix mineralization. What’s more, the synergism of the Sr2+ and CaP from the Sr-CaP/PCL/CS membrane enhanced BMSCs angiogenic differentiation, herein resulting in the largest VEGF secretion amount. Consequently, the Sr-CaP/PCL/CS nanohybrid electrospun membrane has promising applications in GBR.

Structural parameters of the implants such as shape, size, and porosity of the pores have been extensively investigated to promote bone tissue repair, however, it is unknown how the pore interconnectivity affects the bone growth behaviors in the scaffolds. Herein we systematically evaluated the effect of biodegradable bioceramics as a secondary phase filler in the macroporous networks on the mechanical and osteogenic behaviors in sparingly dissolvable bioceramic scaffolds. The pure hardystonite (HT) scaffolds with ∼550 & 800 μm in pore sizes were prepared by digital light processing, and then the Sr-doped calcium silicate (SrCSi) bioceramic slurry without and with 30 % organic porogens were intruded into the HT scaffolds with 800 μm pore size and sintered at 1150 °C. It indicated that the organic porogens could endow spherical micropores in the SrCSi filler, and the invasion of the SrCSi component could not only significantly enhance the compressive strength and modulus of the HT-based scaffolds, but also induce osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). The pure HT scaffolds showed extremely slow bio-dissolution in Tris buffer after immersion for 8 weeks (∼1 % mass decay); in contrast, the SrCSi filler would readily dissolve into the aqueous medium and produced a steady mass decay (>6 % mass loss). In vivo experiments in rabbit femoral bone defect models showed that the pure HT scaffolds showed bone tissue ingrowth but the bone growth was impeded in the SrCSi-intruded scaffolds within 4 weeks; however, the group with higher porosity of SrCSi filler showed appreciable osteogenesis after 8 weeks of implantation and the whole scaffold was uniformly covered by new bone tissues after 16 weeks. These findings provide some new insights that the pore interconnectivity is not inevitable to impede bone ingrowth with the prolongation of implantation time, and such a highly biodegradable and bioactive filler intrusion strategy may be beneficial for optimizing the performances of scaffolds in bone regenerative medicine applications.

The development of bioactive materials with good mechanical properties and promotion of stem cell osteogenic differentiation has important application prospects in bone tissue engineering. In this paper, we designed a novel organic‒inorganic composite hydrogel (FPIGP@BGN-Sr) utilizing diacrylated F127 (DA-PF127), β-glycerophosphate-modified polyitaconate (PIGP) and strontium-doped bioactive glass nanoparticles (BGN-Sr) through free radical polymerization and coordination interactions and then evaluated its promoting effect on the osteogenic differentiation of mouse embryonic mesenchymal stem cells in detail. The results showed that the FPIGP@BGN-Sr hydrogel exhibited a controlled storage modulus by changing the amount of BGN-Sr. Notably, the FPIGP@BGN-Sr hydrogel possessed excellent elastic ability with a compressive strain of up to 98.6% and negligible change in mechanical properties after 10 cycles of compression. In addition, the FPIGP@BGN-Sr hydrogel had good cytocompatibility, maintained the activity and proliferation of mouse embryonic mesenchymal stem cells (C3H10T1/2), and effectively enhanced the activity of alkaline phosphatase, osteogenic gene expression and biomineralization ability of the cells. In conclusion, the excellent mechanical properties and osteogenic biological activity of the FPIGP@BGN-Sr hydrogel make it a promising organic‒inorganic composite bioactive material for stem cell-based bone regeneration.
