Ceramic membranes are increasingly recognized for their effectiveness in processing fermentation broths. However, developing ceramic membranes with superior anti-fouling properties remains a challenge for large-scale applications. Iron oxide nanomaterials have gained significant research interest as a cost-effective and readily available solution for mitigating membrane fouling , thanks to their excellent hydrophilicity. This study introduces ceramic membranes enhanced with iron oxide via a facile sol-gel technique. The membrane's resistance to fouling, hydrophilicity, adhesion force, and surface potential were assessed. Post-modification, a consistent distribution of iron elements on the membrane surface was achieved, with negligible alteration in pore size. Although the pure water permeance (450 ± 45 L m −2 h −1 ·bar −1 ) did not change significantly, the permeance of the modified membrane (225 L m −2 h −1 ·bar −1 ) was nearly 20 % higher than that of the original membrane when separating a 1000 ppm oil-in-water emulsion, with both membranes achieving 99 % oil droplet rejection. Moreover, the flux recovery rate of the modified membrane surpassed that of the original membrane by approximately 30 %, indicating a significant improvement in anti-fouling performance. Upscaling experiments further validated the modified membrane's anti-fouling performance and capability to rapidly process broths with high oil content. Overall, this study presents a novel anti-fouling ceramic membrane for the treatment of oil-containing fermentation systems.

Membrane separation has been widely used in water purification, and mesoporous ceramic membranes show a high potential in the future because of their high stability and resistance to harsh environments. In the current study, a novel polymer-derived ceramic silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) membrane was developed via a preceramic reactive self-sacrificed method and was further applied in a homemade dead-end system for water purification. A cyclosiloxane hybrid polymer was selected as the precursor and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was used as the sacrificial template. Membrane pores were formed because of template removal during the sintering process, creating channels for water transportation. The pore size and porosity could be readily adjusted by changing the amounts and types of PDMS used in the fabrication process. The as-prepared SiOC membrane showed a high water permeability (140 LMH@2.5 bar) and high removal rate of rhodamine B (RhB), demonstrating its potential applications in water treatment. This work would provide an easy and scalable method to prepare ceramic membranes with a controlled pore size, which could be used for different water treatment applications.

To improve the antifouling property of ceramic membrane in oil/water separation, a high flux and antifouling polymer–ceramic composite membrane (PI/CM) was prepared by a modified method. FESEM, EDS and CA were used to characterize the morphology, surface composition, and surface characteristics of the as-prepared PI/CM composites; and the pore size distribution was measured with bubble point porometer technique. The oil/water mixture separation and antifouling effects of the PI/CM modification membrane were evaluated by the filtration tests using edible oil as model foulant. The results showed that the polyimide (PI) with low molecular weight was grafted on the surface of CM via our modified method. The most probable pore size of the PI/CM composite membrane decreased to 542.9 nm, which was less than 849.9 nm of the raw CM. During this microfiltration of oil/water mixture at the constant applied pressure of 0.86 bar, the modified PI/CM showed a high water flux of 2430 LMH, which was comparable to the raw CM. While the edible oil rejection rate was up to 96.5% for the oil/water mixture, far higher than CM; and the PI/CM also showed a good anti-fouling property with a far higher water flux recovery of 88.8% than CM. Moreover, the special structural stability of the modified membrane profited from the strong interaction between polyimide and CM endowed it with better durability in oil/water mixture than CM during repeated filtration.

In this experiment, a novel catalytic ceramic membrane (CCM) with spherical Cu 1.4 Mn 1.6 O 4 material loading was prepared through hydrothermal in situ growth method. The synergistic effects of membrane separation and catalytic ozonation on membrane antipollution and degradation of micro-pollutants were systematically investigated. The results indicated that the degradation efficiency of bisphenol A by CCMs reached 85.7% with a stable normalized flux of 0.90 under the operating conditions of [O 3 ] = 4 g/h, transmembrane pressure = 0.2 bar, and pH = 6. In addition, the results showed that the composite bimetallic oxides have good stability by measuring the leaching concentration of metal ions during the catalytic process. This study provides a promising strategy for in situ growth of catalytically active composite bimetallic oxides on the surfaces of ceramic membrane and for mitigation of membrane fouling complex water treatment.

Efficient separating oil-water emulsion, it is required that ceramic membranes have the suitable membrane pore size, narrow pore size distribution and low membrane fouling. To realize it, thin and defect-free membrane separation layer should be directly prepared on the large pore size support surface, and the membrane under a dynamic filtration mode. In the present work, disc ceramic membrane without any transition layer was fabricated directly on the surface of support with a pore-size of 3.8 µm via a printing and dip-coating method. The mesh aperture and printing times regulate the thickness of printing layer, preventing the small alumina particles from penetrating into the support. Meanwhile, Dip-coating layer effectively eliminate the defects of the printing layer. Compared with common ceramic membranes, the prepared disc ceramic membrane has a low-cost and high permeability of 1946.6 L/m 2 ·h·bar. Furthermore, the disc ceramic membrane can significantly mitigate membrane fouling and improve the oil-water separation efficiency (>99.5%) under a dynamic membrane filtration mode. This study suggests the practicability of printing and dip-coating method to prepare the disc ceramic membrane with high performance.

Insufficient permeability and membrane fouling significantly influence the efficiency of ceramic microfiltration (MF) membranes in oil/water emulsion treatment. In this study, a high-flux whisker layer ceramic MF membrane with super-hydrophilicity was successfully fabricated through gel-spin coating method and a low-temperature oxidation method, which was used to separate oil/water emulsion. The effects of the whisker layer and surface wettability were systematically investigated, and the mechanism of in-situ gelling and pore size distribution was proposed. The super-hydrophilic ceramic MF membrane with an average pore size of 250 nm exhibited a high gas flux of 934 m 3 /(m 2 ·h·bar) and excellent pure water flux of 9754 L/(m 2 h bar). Even after a long-term circulating filtration process, the super-hydrophilic ceramic MF membrane still maintained a high water flux of over 50 L/(m 2 ·h) at a transmembrane pressure of 5 KPa during the treatment of oil-in-water emulsion with a concentration of 1000 mg/L. Overall, the developed ceramic MF membrane demonstrated high permeability and excellent anti-fouling performance, making it a promising candidate for oil/water emulsion wastewater treatment.

Membrane distillation is an emerging separation technology with a high separation factor in water desalination. Ceramic membranes are increasingly used in membrane distillation because of high thermal and chemical stabilities. Coal fly ash is a promising ceramic membrane material with low thermal conductivity. In this study, three hydrophobic coal-fly-ash-based ceramic membranes were prepared for saline water desalination. The performances of different membranes in membrane distillation were compared. The effects of membrane pore size on permeate flux and salt rejection were researched. The coal-fly-ash-based membrane showed both a higher permeate flux and a higher salt rejection than the alumina membrane. As a result, using coal fly ash as the material for membrane fabrication can effectively increase the performance when applied to MD. Increasing the membrane pore size improved the permeate flux, but reduced the salt rejection. When the mean pore size increased from 0.15 μm to 1.57 μm, the water flux rose from 5.15 L·m−2·h−1to 19.72 L·m−2·h−1, but the initial salt rejection was reduced from 99.95% to 99.87%. The hydrophobic coal-fly-ash-based membrane with a mean pore size of 0.18 μm exhibited a water flux of 9.54 L·m−2·h−1and a salt rejection of higher than 98.36% in membrane distillation. Keywords:ceramic membranes;solid-state sintering;hydrophobic modification;coal fly ash;pore size;membrane distillation

Oily wastewater, resulting from oil recovery, petrochemical industries, or accidents, poses a significant threat to the aquatic environment. Membrane separation technology can offer unprecedented opportunities for highly efficient water remediation but at the cost of poor permeability and serious oil fouling. Here, we report a faveolate nanofibrous membrane through the steric growth of bismuth oxybromide-bismuth oxyiodide nanoflakes on the TiO 2 /polypyrrole nanofibers. The spatially faveolate cells create highly covered confined spaces that efficiently capture and coalesce nanosized oil droplets, thus achieving substantial selectivity for micron porous membranes. The faveolate membranes are capable of efficiently separating various oil-in-water emulsions, particularly nanoscale surfactant-stabilized emulsions with a high permeation flux of 6075 L m -2 h −1 and a good separation efficiency of 99.95 %. Moreover, the membranes with multi-heterostructure act as efficient photocatalysts, giving rise to visible light-induced sufficient fouling-tolerant property with nearly zero irreversible oil fouling. This study could provide a novel strategy for developing a new generation of membranes with high performance and long service lifetime for oily sewage remediation.

Algal intracellular organic matter (IOM), released during algae's normal growth phase and water treatment processes, has long been a source of significant membrane fouling , considerably limiting the effective use of ultrafiltration(UF) technology. In this study, a Bi-doped TiO 2 composite with powdered activated carbon (Bi 2 O 3 –TiO 2 /PAC) was loaded on ceramic UF membranes by vacuum filtration, and the prepared photocatalytic modified ceramic membranes (MCMs) were investigated for the removal of IOM and the mitigation of membrane fouling at different loading levels and under three operating conditions: Dark, Dark-UV, and UV. The results showed that the photocatalytic MCMs were able to remove the protein and humic acid fluorescent components of IOM and decompose or mineralize organic matter with molecular weights of 10–50 kDa. Under the Dark, Dark-UV, and UV conditions, the final normalized flux of MCM-2.88 was significantly increased by 22.6 %, 82.1 %, and 108.0 %, respectively. The hydrophilicity of MCMs not only transformed the interactions between IOM and the membrane into repulsive forces, but also the composite material on the membrane surface transforms the membrane fouling mechanism from intermediate blocking model to cake layer formation. Furthermore, the application of photocatalytic oxidation under the Dark-UV and UV conditions yielded a reduction in both reversible and irreversible fouling. This action led to an increased hydrophilicity and elevated free energy of adhesion with IOM during the filtration process. Moreover, the main fouling mechanism changed into complete or intermediate blocking. These outcomes collectively underscore the capability of MCMs to alleviate membrane fouling induced by IOM. This advancement holds substantial promise for the advancement and widespread implementation of photocatalytic ceramic membrane filtration techniques.

High-temperature filtration is an energy-saving and efficient technology for treating high-temperature dusty exhaust, while most of the current studies focus on the design and preparation of high-temperature filtration materials and their application in room-temperature filtration. In this work, SiC ceramic membranes were prepared as typical high-temperature filtration materials to systematically investigate the high-temperature filtration process at 25–400 °C. The experimental results show that the filtration temperature has a significant effect on both initial filtration and cake filtration processes. The increase of temperature results in an increase of gas viscosity, which contributes to the increase of the initial filtration pressure drop (ΔP0). Meanwhile, temperature can affect the forces on dust in the pore of the SiC membrane, and a higher temperature leads to the easy penetration of dust (especially for the ultrafine particles) through the membrane layer into the support body layer at the initial filtration process. Moreover, the higher temperature can reduce the porosity of the dust cake, leading to an increase in the cake pressure drop (ΔPc). All above results were further proved during the experiments on studying the effect of the filtration velocity, dust concentration, and regeneration on the filtration performance of SiC membranes at 25 and 300 °C. Through this work, we expect to shed some light on the design and preparation of high-temperature filtration materials and on the understanding of the high-temperature filtration process.

Superhydrophobic (SHB) ceramic membrane surfaces have proved their superiority in water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion separation. However, the construction of ceramic membranes with SHB pores remains challenging and the interaction between the SHB pores and water droplets is still unclear. Herein, by growing uniform ZnO nanoclusters (NCs) onto the SiC grains of a symmetric SiC ceramic membrane and then grafting with triethoxy(octyl)silane, a series of ZnO NCs@SiC membranes with SHB pores were prepared. Prior to secondary hydrothermal synthesis ZnO NCs, the small-sized ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) were grown onto the SiC grains via a sol–gel process. All the ZnO NCs@SiC membranes with SHB pores showed improved water removal performance from W/O emulsions compared with that of the pristine membrane. The optimal membrane with SHB pores displayed a pore size of 0.19 μm with a water contact angle of 163.96°. The smaller water droplets in W/O emulsions, the membrane pores are easier to be polluted. When separating a 1000 ppm W/O emulsion with a water droplet size of 500 nm at a transmembrane pressure of 0.5 bar, the water rejection reached 98.90 %, and the steady-state oil flux was 92.99 L·m −2 ·h −1 . Based on the separation experiments, the separation mechanism was revealed. This work provides significant perceptions into constructing SHB pores of ceramic membranes, which might be useful for other possible applications.

A dual-layer alumina microfiltration membrane with super permeability and high selectivity was prepared by co-sintering the membrane and the support. Silica sol as sintering aid for the supports can also promote adhesion between supports and membranes. Tape-casting technique was introduced here to form the pre-membranes which were directly transfer-coated on the green support bodies. The optimum co-sintering conditions and the effects of organic agent content and membrane thickness on the membrane performance were comprehensively investigated. The optimized ceramic membrane had an average pore size of 249 nm and a water permeance of 5040 Lm −2 h -1 bar -1 after co-sintering at 1300 °C for 2 h, which also exhibited a rejection rate of 96.2% for the carbon ink with an average particle size of 237 nm. This work provides a new method for efficient and low-cost preparation of high-performance ceramic membranes.
