Corrosion-resistant coatings with self-healing capabilities are still a great challenge for metal protection. In this study, a corrosion-resistant coating with intrinsic self-healing capabilities was developed by compounding hydroxy-terminated silicone oil (HTSO) with 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidone (UPy) derivatives. The smooth surface of the coating was shown by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and good smoothness was also exhibited in the cross-section, which indicated that the coating is very homogeneous from the top to the bottom. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) was employed to illustrate the temperature-resistant characteristics of the coating, revealing its significant chemical stability up to 360 °C. The corrosion resistance of the coating is assessed through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the typical impedance at 0.01 Hz is 1.70 × 109 and 2.44 × 108 Ω·cm2 before and after exposure to a 3.5 wt % NaCl solution for 70 days. There was no significant change in the water contact angle of the coatings before and after immersion; however, the adhesion strength was reduced. Notably, the coating demonstrates immediate and multiple self-healing properties. The tensile stress of the associated healing sample experiences an augmentation within the temperature range of 30–120 °C, with the critical fracture strain of the healed sample reaching 235% at 120 °C. The self-healing mechanism of the coating is systematically investigated using in situ Raman spectroscopy.

Protic ionic liquids (PILs) have emerged as innovative solvents with significant potential for CO 2 capture and transformation, presenting a sustainable alternative to conventional methods which often involve energy-intensive processes or environmentally detrimental chemicals. Herein, a novel strategy for CO 2 capture and conversion at mild conditions using non-stoichiometric protic ionic liquids (NPILs) was demonstrated for the first time. These NPILs, employed as sorbents, solvents, and catalysts, were composed of imidazole (Im) and 1,8-diazabicyclo [5.4.0] undec-7-ene (DBU) in various ratios. Correlations between the mole ratio of DBU/Im and physicochemical properties such as viscosity, conductivity, thermal stability, and the distribution of neutral and ionic species were systematically investigated. Effects of the absorption temperature and CO 2 partial pressure on the absorption capacity were also studied. Different absorption mechanisms, including carbonate and carbamate pathways, were analyzed using FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. Moreover, the fixed CO 2 could be catalytically converted to quinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-diones under exceptionally mild reaction conditions (1 atm, 50 °C, metal-free process). A plausible reaction mechanism involving simultaneous CO 2 activation and substrate activation for the transformation of CO 2 into quinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-diones was verified through NMR spectra. It is believed that the new insights into the CO 2 mechanism will facilitate the rational design of functional ionic liquids for CO 2 capture, utilization, and storage in the future.

Developing a silicone elastomer with high strength, exceptional toughness, good crack tolerance, healability, and recyclability, poses significant challenges due to the inherent trade-offs between these properties. Herein, the design of silicone-based elastomers with a nanoscopic microphase separation structure and comprehensive mechanical properties is achieved by combining bi-incompatible soft segments and multi-scale hydrogen bonds. The formation of multi-scale hydrogen bonds involving urethane, urea, and 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPy) facilitates efficient reversible crosslinking of the synthesized polymer containing thermodynamically incompatible poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and poly(propylene glycol) (PPG). The dynamic dissociation and recombination of hydrogen bonds, coupled with the forced compatibility and spontaneous separation of bi-incompatible soft segments, can effectively dissipate energy, particularly in the crack region during the stretching process. The obtained silicone-based elastomer exhibits a high break strength of 8.0 MPa, good elongation at break of 1910%, ultrahigh toughness of 67.8 MJ m −3 , and unprecedented fracture energy of 31.8 kJ m −2 while maintaining their thermal stability, hydrophobicity, healability, and recyclability. This resilient and long-lasting silicone-based elastomer exhibits significant potential for use in flexible electronic devices.

Biodegradable and biocompatible elastomers (bioelastomers) could resemble the mechanical properties of extracellular matrix and soft tissues and, thus, are very useful for many biomedical applications. Despite significant advances, tunable bioelastomers with easy processing, facile biofunctionalization, and the ability to withstand a mechanically dynamic environment have remained elusive. Here, we reported new dynamic hydrogen-bond cross-linked PSeD-U bioelastomers possessing the aforementioned features by grafting 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinones (UPy) units with strong self-complementary quadruple hydrogen bonds to poly(sebacoyl diglyceride) (PSeD), a refined version of a widely used bioelastomer poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS). PSeD-U polymers exhibited stronger mechanical strength than their counterparts of chemically cross-linked PSeD and tunable elasticity by simply varying the content of UPy units. In addition to the good biocompatibility and biodegradability as seen in PSeD, PSeD-U showed fast self-healing (within 30 min) at mild conditions (60 °C) and could be readily processed at moderate temperature (90–100 °C) or with use of solvent casting at room temperature. Furthermore, the free hydroxyl groups of PSeD-U enabled facile functionalization, which was demonstrated by the modification of PSeD-U film with FITC as a model functional molecule.
