Electrocatalytic conversion of biomass-derived platform molecules is regarded as an emerging approach to obtain high-value fuels and chemicals. Herein, a heterostructured design strategy involving dispersed Ag nanoparticles immobilized on one-dimensional TiO2 nanotubes (Ag-TiO2 NTs) for the electroreduction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran (DHMF) was reported. The optimal electrode exhibited an 82.2% FE, 89.8% selectivity, and DHMF productivity value of 0.1 mmol cm−2 h−1. Electrochemical measurements combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations manifested that the superior performance was derived from the heterojunction-induced metal–semiconductor interactions at the interface, by which the TiO2 NTs and Ag bring complementary advantages inhibiting the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and facilitating charge transfer. Moreover, the catalytic activity of the Ag sites on Ag-TiO2 NTs was considered separately. The mass activity of Ag on Ag-TiO2 NTs reached 5.8 mol L−1 g−1, which was far more than that of Ag mesh (0.038 mol L−1 g−1), indicating the significantly enhanced activity of Ag with high utilization. This could be attributed to the controllable nucleation of Ag through the confinement effect of TiO2 NTs, acquiring dispersed Ag nanoparticles. The design scheme for the heterostructured Ag-TiO2 NTs electrocatalyst displays prospective applications for developing highly efficient electrocatalysts for the electrochemical reduction of HMF.

The effective treatment for periodontitis is to completely and sustainedly eradicate the bacterial pathogens from the complex periodontal pockets. Local sustained-release antibiotics as a complementary treatment after scaling and root planning can sustainedly combat bacterial pathogens in the periodontal pockets to help treat the disease, but the increasing concern of bacterial resistance limits its future use. Here, we reported a local antibacterial system based on microsized multifunctional Ag–TiO2–x encapsulated in alginate (ATA) microspheres. We confirmed that ATA displayed strong photothermally enhanced dual enzyme-mimicking (peroxidase-like and catalase-like) activities and weak photocatalytic activity under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, which could boost the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and O2 in the presence of low-level H2O2. As a result, the ATA/H2O2/NIR system exhibited efficient antibacterial activity against Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus gordonii in both planktonic and biofilm forms. With the help of ROS, ATA could release Ag+ in concentrations sufficient to inhibit periodontal pathogens as well. Moreover, the in situ-generated oxygen was supposed to alleviate the local hypoxic environment and would help downregulate the lipopolysaccharide-mediated inflammatory response of periodontal stem cells. The in vivo rat periodontitis treatment results demonstrated that the ATA/H2O2/NIR system reduced the bacterial load, relieved inflammation, and improved tissue healing. Our work developed a new local prolonged bactericidal and oxygenation system for enhanced periodontitis. Avoiding the usage of antibiotics and nanomaterials, this strategy showed great promise in adjunctive periodontitis treatment and also in other biomedical applications.

We developed a novel green approach for the in situ fabrication of Ag NPs in mesoporous TiO2films via the bamboo self-sacrificing reduction of Ag(NH3)2+ions, which can inhibit fungal growth on the bamboo surface. Mesoporous anatase TiO2(MT) films were first synthesized on bamboo via a hydrothermal method. Then, Ag NPs with a 5.3 nm mean diameter were incorporated into the pore channels of optimal MT/bamboo (MTB) samples at room temperature without the addition of reducing agents, such that the Ag NPs were almost entirely embedded into the MT films. Our analysis indicated that the solubilized lignin from bamboo, which is rich in oxygen-containing functional groups, serves as a green reductant for reducing the Ag(NH3)2+ions to Ag NPs. Antifungal experiments withTrichoderma virideunder dark conditions highlighted that the antifungal activity of the Ag/MT/bamboo samples were greater than those of naked bamboo, MTB, and Ag/bamboo, suggesting that these hybrid nanomaterials produce a synergistic antifungal effect that is unrelated to photoactivity. The inhibition ofPenicillium citrinumeffectively followed a similar trend. This newly developed bamboo protection method may provide a sustainable, eco-friendly, and efficient method for enhancing the antifungal characteristics of traditional bamboo, having the potential to prolong the service life of bamboo materials, particularly under dark conditions.Keywords:bamboo;Ag/TiO2nanocomposites;self-sacrificing reduction;antifungal activity

Metal/semiconductor heterostructures have been widely used to drive photochemical reactions. However, understanding of the synergies between them is still limited. In this study, we discovered that under ultraviolet (UV) light, rather than visible (Vis) excitation, the redox active sites oxidize adsorbed water and reduce oxygen molecules more efficiently. In this paper, the comprehensive mechanism of Ag@TiO 2 photocatalysis of H 2 O 2 has been elucidated and confirmed their synergies in photocatalytic reactions, through in situ characterization and theoretical calculation. Our findings provide insights into the key factors that influence the difference of photoactivity in UV and Vis light, thus having important implications for the design of solar energy conversion materials as well as environmental purification materials.

High throughput of polyacylonitile (PAN)-based Ag/TiO 2 composite nanofibers were prepared by using needleless electrospinning method. The morphology and crystallinity characterization revealed uniform and smooth nanofibers with an average diameter ranged from 160 to 260 nm. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of PAN/Ag/TiO 2 compared with PAN/TiO 2 nanofibers under visible light irradiation was linked with high interfacial charge transfer and low bandgap due to Ag entity. High photodegradation efficiency for methyl orange, rhodamine B and methylene blue were achieved as 99.5%, 92% and 99% respectively during the 4 h experiment. Effect of key parameters (i.e. pH, oxygen and Ag/TiO 2 loading dosage) on photodegradation efficiency of dyes were also investigated. Active species trapping experiments demonstrated that O 2 − and OH were dominant active species in the photocatalytic degradation of dyes. These composite nanofibers have also exhibited excellent antibacterial activity, e.g. 95% of E. coli and 99% of S. aureus were killed in 2 h. Bifunctional nanofibers can be easily recovered from the aqueous solution as compared with the TiO 2 nanoparticles. Moreover, the daily production rate of nanofibers has reached over 1.4 kg in the laboratory test, which is 60 times higher than that using the single needle electrospinning method. This production rate may be further optimized in the pilot scale studies. High productivity and strong catalytic properties of nanofibers propose their potential applications in environmental remediation for economically and eco-friendly wastewater and air treatment materials.

Flexible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates have garnered more and more attention due to their noninvasive sample collection ability. However, the improvement of SERS performance gradually reaches a bottleneck with numerous studies on exploration of active materials. In this study, we constructed an Ag@TiO2@cotton SERS substrate with randomly distributed TiO2 nanocavities, which can generate a strong coupling cavity mode, thus dramatically enhancing SERS activities. The prepared SERS substrates demonstrate high detection sensitivity, with a limit of 10–10 M for MB solution, an impressive enhancement factor (EF) of 2.7 × 108, excellent signal reproducibility, and remarkable stability. Furthermore, the proposed material allows the sensitive detection of MG with a limit of 1.0 × 10–10 M through a wiping fish collection method. These flexible Ag@TiO2@cotton substrates expand the range of available SERS substrates, and their easy fabrication method and long-term sensitivity hold promise for the trace analysis of harmful substances.

Ag/TiO 2 nanocomposites were prepared through combination of a sol–gel process of a titanium precursor in inverse miniemulsions and in situ reduction of silver ions in the “nanoreactors”. The morphological investigation shows that Ag nanoparticles are mainly located on the surface of TiO 2 nano-supports because of the fast reduction rate of Ag ions by hydrazine. Ag/TiO 2 nanocomposites with amorphous or anatase TiO 2 phase displayed high visible-light catalytic activity for degradation of Rhodamine B. The photoactivity of Ag/anatase TiO 2 nanocomposites could be influenced by the Ag content that could be conveniently tuned by the loading of silver salts. The influence of the loading of silver salts on the particle properties of the Ag/TiO 2 nanocomposites was investigated systematically.

Ag-based catalysts are shown to be efficient for formaldehyde (HCHO) oxidation at low temperature, while the role of active Ag species in this reaction remains a controversial issue. In this work, we prepared Ag/TiO 2 catalysts with TiO 2 of different crystal structures (anatase or rutile) as supports and tested their performances in HCHO oxidation. We observed that the crystal structure of the TiO 2 support had a significant influence on the activity of the Ag/TiO 2 catalysts, and Ag/A (anatase) exhibited dramatically superior activity compared with Ag/R (rutile). More interestingly, we observed a clear inflection point in the HCHO conversion curve for the Ag/R catalyst. Combining the results of BET, XRD, TEM, XAFS, H 2 -TPR characterization and DFT calculations, we show that HCHO oxidation on Ag/TiO 2 catalysts is a co-function process of multiple active sites including surface oxygen, Ag 2 O, and metallic Ag species. The low-temperature non-renewable surface oxygen and Ag 2 O species mainly contribute to HCHO oxidation in the low-temperature range, while metallic Ag species are primarily responsible for the reaction at high temperature since metallic Ag is capable of activation of oxygen at high temperature. The relative contents of surface oxygen, Ag 2 O and metallic Ag species are different on the Ag/A and Ag/R catalysts. The dispersion degree of metallic Ag species also differs on the Ag/A and Ag/R, therefore their capacities for oxygen activation are quite dissimilar. The above factors combine to result in distinct catalytic behaviors for Ag/A and Ag/R in HCHO oxidation, as well as the appearance of an inflection point.

Plasmonics are applied to concentrate light at the nanoscale and are integrated into photothermal technologies to improve solar energy absorption. Here, we report a one-step synthetic route of super broadband Ag@TiO 2 core–shell nanoparticles under well-defined conditions using silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) and titanium butoxide (TBT) in N , N -dimethylformamide as raw materials and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC) as both an inducer and a protective agent. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the prepared nanoparticles have well-defined core–shell structures. The intermediates and final product were further characterized by UV–vis absorption, which showed that the synthesized Ag@TiO 2 core–shell nanoparticles exhibit super broadband absorbance in the visible light range, and the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak can be systematically tuned between 414 and 499 nm. In addition, X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive spectroscopy confirmed the compositions of the nanoparticles. The nanoparticles prepared under well-defined conditions, i.e., a TBT:AgNO 3 molar ratio of 3:1, CTAC concentration of 0.6 mM, temperature of 80 °C, and reaction time of 70 min, show an SPR peak at 474 nm, which is close to the maximum solar irradiation intensity and has great potential for promoting solar energy conversion.

Aiming at the insufficient broad-spectrum absorption and high carrier complexation rate in the photocatalytic antimicrobial application of TiO2, Ag/TiO2composite materials were prepared by co-precipitation method in this study. The material characterization showed that Ag was uniformly dispersed on the TiO2surface in the form of nanoparticles, and the specific surface area of Ag/TiO2composite materials was enhanced by 59.6% compared with that of pure TiO2, and the mesoporous structure was significantly optimized. Visible photocatalytic tests showed that the degradation rate of Ag/TiO2composite materials for Rh B and M O was more than two times higher than that of pure TiO2. Under dark conditions, the material showed a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 62.5 μg/mL against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, with an antimicrobial rate of 99.8% for 8 h, confirming its non-light-dependent antimicrobial activity. Mechanistic studies revealed that photogenerated electrons were efficiently captured by Ag nanoparticles, which inhibited e-h+complexation; meanwhile, the photothermal effect (ΔT > 15 °C) promoted the sustained release of Ag+, which realized the triple synergistic antimicrobial activity by disrupting the bacterial membrane and interfering with metabolism. This study provides a new strategy for the development of efficient solar-powered water treatment materials.

Photothermal catalytic sterilization is a popular and effective approach to recycle urban sewage. In this work, a novel efficient photothermal catalytic sterilization system by using in-situ prepared highly dispersed Ag/TiO 2 catalyst was proposed. The preparation of Ag/TiO 2 catalyst and the sterilization process were conducted in one pot, which presents a great advantage for the practical application. The Ag/TiO 2 catalyst showed good metal dispersion and superior photothermal effect. And the sterilization efficiency can be reached 99.1 % in the sterilization test of Escherichia coli . The sterilization condition was also optimized, by regulating the catalyst dosage and lighting time. Moreover, Staphylococcus aureus and urban domestic sewage were also tested for sterilization performance, with the sterilization efficiency as high as 93.2 % and 99.6 %.

Silver/titanium dioxide (Ag/TiO 2 ) nanoparticles, renowned as effective inorganic antibacterial agents with a wide spectrum of activity and minimal resistance induction, encounter challenges when incorporated into organic substrates. This integration often leads to particle aggregation, resulting in a substantial reduction in antibacterial efficacy. This study devised a novel approach involving loading Ag/TiO 2 nanoparticles onto polyurea microcapsules (PUMC), forming hybrid-shelled microcapsules (Ag/TiO 2 -PUMC) using silane coupling agents. The preparation of polyurea microcapsules offers the advantages of rapid synthesis and mild reaction conditions, facilitating industrial-scale production. Additionally, loading Ag/TiO 2 nanoparticles onto polyurea microcapsules helps alleviate the aggregation issue, and the organic nature of polyurea microcapsules enhances compatibility with organic substrates. Characterization techniques, including SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, UV–visible absorption spectroscopy, EPR and thermogravimetric analysis, were employed to confirm the successful grafting of Ag/TiO 2 nanoparticles onto the PUMC. A comparative analysis between the two silane coupling agents, KH550 and KH792, revealed that the dual amino-functional silane coupling agent, KH792, played a pivotal role in chain extension during the microcapsule self-polymerization process. The antibacterial activity of the Ag/TiO 2 -PUMC was evaluated against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . Remarkably, the hybrid-shelled microcapsules exhibited outstanding antibacterial efficacy, achieving a 99.99% antibacterial rate within just 0.5 hours. This performance surpassed unmodified Ag/TiO 2 nanoparticles, highlighting the enhanced antibacterial efficacy of the hybrid-shelled microcapsule structure. This study presents a successful synthesis strategy for inorganic/organic hybrid-shelled antibacterial microcapsules and provides valuable insights for refining inorganic antibacterial agents. The demonstrated approach holds substantial promise for advancing the field of organic antibacterial materials.
