A comprehensive study of As(V) removal by starch-coated magnetite nano-adsorbent based on waste iron sludge

Huiping Zeng,Xiao Sun,Siqi Sun,Weihua Zhao,Ruixia Hao,Jie Zhang,Dong Li

Combining natural polymer starch with magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) can reduce the aggregation of MNPs and enhance their adsorption capacity and stability. Iron sludge from a de‑ironing water plant and starch were employed as basic ingredients in this study. Bare magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) and starch-coated magnetite nanocomposites (ST 2 -MNPs) were synthesized by a “green” co-precipitation method for the removal of low-concentration As(V) solutions. TEM, XPS, FTIR, XRD, VSM, BET, and TGA techniques were used to examine the physicochemical properties of the synthesized ST 2 -MNPs. TEM verified that the magnetite nanoparticles in the composites were evenly distributed. The ST 2 -MNPs (5.26 nm) possessed a smaller average particle size than MNPs (6.24 nm). And VSM confirmed their remarkable magnetic properties. The starch-to‑iron-sludge ratio was optimized and the influence of adsorbent dosage, pH, and co-existing anions on As(V) adsorption were studied. The acquired arsenate adsorption data were found to be consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model, with maximum adsorption capacities of 23.04 mg/g for MNPs and 42.88 mg/g for ST 2 -MNPs. This shows that the active sites on MNPs and ST 2 -MNPs are energetically homogenous, and that the addition of starch coating significantly increases magnetite's adsorption capacity for As(V). The adsorption kinetics follow a Pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating chemisorption between As(V) and ST 2 -MNPs. In addition, the adsorption mechanism of As(V) by ST 2 -MNPs including chemical adsorption and electrostatic attraction was determined through in-depth discussion of characterization methods and adsorption experiments. This study offers references for the removal of As(V) and the resourceful application of backwash iron sludge.

Nitrogen-doped carbon dots/Fe3+-based fluorescent probe for the “off–on” sensing of As(V) in seafood

Zeyi Li,Yunrui Cao,Tingyu Feng,Tingting Wei,Changhu Xue,Zhaojie Li,Jie Xu

To better satisfy the application of rapid detection methods in the detection of As(V) in complex food substrates, we developed an “off–on” fluorescence assay to detect As(V) based on the competition between the electron transfer effect of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N–CDs)/Fe3+ and the complexation reaction of As(V)/Fe3+, using N–CDs/Fe3+ as a fluorescence probe. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) was used to eliminate matrix interference during sample pretreatment. The detection limit was 7.6 ng g−1, with a linear range of 10–100 ng g−1. The method was further used to determine As(V) in different seafood products including snapper, shrimp, clams, and kelp. At the same time, the recovery of the method was validated by high-performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP/MS), indicating that the developed method had good recoveries from 86% to 117% and met the needs for accurate determination of As(V). This approach has shown excellent application potential in the field of As(V) detection in various seafood products.

Selective and efficient removal of As(V) and As(III) from water by resin-based hydrated iron oxide

Yiqun Liu,Zhihao Chen,Xiaoshuang Yin,Yun Chen,Ying Liu,Wenzhong Yang

Arsenic pollution in natural water is a worldwide problem. In this work, a resin-based hydrated iron oxide (D303-HFO) adsorbent was designed to remove arsenate (As(V)) and arsenite (As(III)) in the groundwater. The structure and morphology of the D303-HFO adsorbent were characterized by FTIR, XRD , SEM and TEM tests. The specific surface area, pore volume and pore size increased with the incorporation of HFO nanoparticles in the resin. In addition, the effects of pH and coexisting ions on the arsenic removal efficiency were investigated. Results indicated that the D303-HFO had efficient removal performance for arsenic in the pH range of 3–9 and showed high selectivity for As(V) and As(III) under the influence of competitive ions. The adsorption kinetics study confirmed that the adsorption process was dominated by chemisorption , and the adsorption isotherms of As(V) and As(III) by D303-HFO fitted the Langmuir model. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption reaction was spontaneous and exothermic. Moreover, the regeneration and stability experiment indicated that the D303-HFO adsorbent was super reusable after five consecutive cycles and could be put into service stably and permanently. The fixed-bed column test showed that the water sample containing As(V) and As(III) was treated with a volume of 900BV and 1100BV, respectively. After the treatment, the effluent concentration reached the drinking water standard stipulated by WHO.

Rapid catalytic oxidation of As(III) to As(V) using a Bacillus spore–2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl system

Yuqing Qin,Fei Peng,Yonggang Hu

The oxidation of As(III) to As(V) is a critical process in the treatment of contaminated water. We found that 95% As(III) (10 mg L−1) could be rapidly oxidized to As(V) by a laccase–2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) system in 1 h. Based on this finding, we used Bacillus subtilis spores instead of laccase for As(III) oxidation with the same effect because the former had plenty of CotA–laccase on their surface. The catalytic ability of CotA protein and spores was confirmed by expressing the CotA protein and knocking out the cotA gene from wild-type spores. Both laccase– and spore–TEMPO systems displayed similar oxidation rate constants, Michaelis–Menten constants, and maximal velocities owing to the formation of the oxoammonium cation of TEMPO in the presence of dissolved oxygen. Several other laccase mediators such as 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic-acid) (ABTS), acetosyringone (AS), 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT), 2-hydroxybutyl acrylate (HBA), violuric acid (VLA), 4-oxo-TEMPO, 4-amino-TEMPO, 4-methoxy-TEMPO, 4-hydroxy-TEMPO benzoate, and 4-hydroxy-TEMPO coupled with spores for As(III) oxidation were also investigated in detail. The spore–TEMPO system exhibited the highest oxidation efficiency and tolerated the addition of 10 mg L−1 Al3+, Ti4+, Cu2+, K+, Fe3+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Mg2+, Co2+, and Mn2+. Both laccase and spores recovered via ultrafiltration and centrifugation, respectively, could be reused for at least five cycles. The developed spore-based system has several advantages including eco-friendliness, ease of operation and storage, low cost, recyclability, sustainability, and without the need for enzyme purification. These findings may have promising implications for developing a new eco-friendly and cost-effective technology for the treatment of arsenic-containing water.

Synthesis of Na-X zeolite from low aluminum coal fly ash: Characterization and high efficient As(V) removal

Ting Yang,Caiyun Han,Hang Liu,Liu Yang,Dekun Liu,Jie Tang,Yongming Luo

Na-X zeolite was successfully prepared from low aluminum coal fly ash (LACFA) via fusion-hydrothermal treatment. The influence of various synthesis parameters was investigated, including aluminum additives (AlCl 3 ·6H 2 O, Al(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O, AlF 3 ·3H 2 O and NaAlO 2 ), dosages of NaAlO 2 , weight ratio of LACFA/NaOH, crystallization temperature and time. The results indicated that the addition of Al species played a key role in the synthesis process of purity Na-X zeolite, and the corresponding relative crystallinity of the obtained samples was in the order of Na-X zeolite (Al)  ≫ Na-X zeolite (Cl)  > Na-X zeolite (N)  > Na-X zeolite (F) (Here, “Al”, “Cl”, “N” and “F” represent NaAlO 2 , AlCl 3 ·6H 2 O, Al(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O and AlF 3 ·3H 2 O, respectively). And the optimal operating conditions were: the weight ratio of LACFA/NaOH = 0.83, short crystallization time 360 min, low crystallization temperature 90 °C and 0.038 mol NaAlO 2 . Additionally, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transforms Infrared (FT-IR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were employed to determine the resultant samples. Based on the results of As(V) adsorption experiment, the experimental data was suitable fitted by Freundlich adsorption isotherm model, and the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity was 27.79 mg/g at pH = 2.14. The kinetics studies suggested that “surface reaction” was the rate-determining step of adsorption process, and the thermodynamics studies indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. These results deemed that the LACFA was suitable for preparing Na-X zeolite (Al) , and the obtained Na-X zeolite (Al) was served as a promising adsorbent to remove As(V) from acid wastewater.

Highly effective adsorption of As(III) and As(V) via zirconium-based materials with abundant active groups and capacity

Biao Yuan,Pan Wu,Changjun Liu,Jian He,Wei Jiang

Arsenate As(V) and arsenite As(III), known for their high toxicity and carcinogenic potential, pose significant threats to environmental and soil health, an efficient arsenic removal technology is urgently needed. In this work, a novel class of zirconium-based adsorbent (AHZOs) was synthesized via the Sol-Gel method, exhibiting a unique nanostructured morphology with low crystallinity and a high density of active hydroxyl groups with a specific surface area of 216.4 m 2 /g. The AHZOs demonstrated remarkable adsorption capacities of 240.7 mg/g for As(III) and 230 mg/g for As(V), with removal efficiencies strongly influenced by pH value. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Through comprehensive characterizations and theoretical calculations, the adsorption mechanisms were elucidated, revealing a combination of chemical reactions and hydrogen bonding interactions. This work not only presents a highly efficient adsorbent for arsenic removal but also provides a new design strategy for targeting other environmental pollutants, highlighting its significant potential for practical applications in environmental remediation.

Reduction of As(V)-bearing goethite by dissolved organic matter from arsenic-prone groundwater during the repeated electron shuttling

Xiaojun Feng,Zhengqi Su,Simeng Li,Xiaoxing Ming,Di Zhang,Huaming Guo

The molecular structure of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is crucial for electron shuttling. However, the molecular transformation of DOM during the repeated electron shuttling and its impact on reduction of Fe oxides-adsorbed arsenic (As) remain poorly understood. Here, four groundwater DOM samples obtained from As-prone groundwater from the Hetao basin, China were concentrated to investigate their molecular transformations and electron shuttle ability during the repeated electron shuttling for reduction of As(V)-bearing goethite. We found that higher electron-transferring capacity (ETC) of high-As groundwater DOM resulted from the higher aromaticity and more functional moieties (i.e., total phenols and quinones) than that in low-As groundwater DOM, and irreversible loss of aromaticity and the functional moieties during the repeated electron shuttling lowered the ETC. This decreasing ETC of DOM reflected the decrease in its electron shuttle ability to reduce As(V)-bearing goethite. Concretely, the maximum concentration of Fe(II) produced from goethite reduction via electron shuttling decreased from 145 μM with the reduced DOM of the first round of electron shuttling to 111 μM with the reduced DOM of the third round of electron shuttling. Additionally, the positive correlation between total dissolved As (mainly as As(V)) and total Fe(II) concentration illustrated that electrons shuttled by the DOM preferentially reduced goethite, thus releasing the adsorbed As(V) into water. This study highlighted that the molecular transformation of DOM during the repeated electron shuttling lowered the electron shuttle ability, thereby impairing the reduction of Fe(III) oxide minerals for As mobility.

Smartphone-enabled Fluorescence Sensing Platform for As(V) Detection in Food and Environmental Matrices using CeO2@Curcumin Fluorescent Probe

Zhenxing Guo,Fang Xu,Longfei Su,Qiang Cheng,Liqiang Xu,Guoping Sheng

Fluorescence methods hold great potential for arsenate (As(V)) detection in food safety. However, the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable fluorescence indicators remains at an early stage. Herein, we develop a novel fluorescence sensing platform for As(V) detection. Curcumin (Cur), a plant-derived, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly food additive. Owing to its excellent fluorescent properties, it was used as a green fluorescent indicator in this study. Cerium dioxide nanoparticles (CeO 2 NPs) were synthesized via a green hydrothermal method and then assembled with Cur to form the CeO 2 @Cur fluorescent probe. The detection of As(V) was achieved through an adsorption-desorption mechanism, where As(V) displaces Cur from the CeO 2 surface, thereby restoring its fluorescence. Based on this mechanism, the probe exhibited a linear response (R 2 = 0.991) to As(V) concentrations within the range of 0.10-30.00 μM, with a low detection limit of 25.83 nM. Furthermore, by integrating smartphone-based RGB analysis of fluorescence images, a portable platform was constructed for the on-site detection of As(V). This work thus offers a promising strategy for sustainable and practical solution for As(V) detection in food and environmental samples.

Eco-utilization of steel slag: Preparation of Fe-based calcium silicate hydrate and its application in As(V) removal

Yongkui Li,Suqin Li,Xiaodong Pan,Xin Zhao,Penghui Guo

Arsenic (As), a carcinogenic heavy metal, is a toxic environmental pollutant that threatens human and environmental health. Here, a cost-effective and high-performance Fe-based calcium silicate hydrate (Fe-CSH) was synthesized through a one-step alkaline activation process using steel slag as an in situ Ca and Fe source to treat As(V)-containing solutions. The synthesized Fe-CSH exhibited a flower-like structure with numerous interleaving nanosheets, which provided abundant adsorption sites. More importantly, this compound could remove large quantities of As(V) from wastewater, achieving maximum adsorption capacities of up to 141.5 mg/g at a pH of 5. The adsorption kinetics were consistent with a Langmuir isotherm model and followed pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion kinetics. Thermodynamics analyses indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and feasible. XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, and XPS analyses indicated that the outstanding adsorption performance of the Fe-CSH could be due to the release of Ca 2+ and OH – from this material. The released Ca 2+ reacted with arsenate ions via coprecipitation, whereas OH – promoted the generation of Fe hydroxide from iron ions, which adsorb As(V) by forming stable bidentate surface complexes. Ultimately, a potential process was proposed for the remediation of As-containing wastewater using hierarchically structured Fe-CSH derived from steel slag. The “trash-to-treasure” strategy implemented for the repurposing of steel slag and the remediation of As-contaminated wastewater are both conducive to sustainable development.

Development, characterization and evaluation of iron-coated honeycomb briquette cinders for the removal of As(V) from aqueous solutions

Tiantian Sheng,Shams Ali Baig,Yunjun Hu,Xiaoqin Xue,Xinhua Xu

The adsorptive removal of As(V) from aqueous solutions using iron-coated honeycomb briquette cinder (Fe-HBC) is presented. Low cost mechanical granulation process was integrated with surface amendment technology to prepare iron-oxide modified granular adsorbent for clean water production. Detailed characterizations were performed using FTIR, XRD, EDS and SEM techniques. Operating parameters including initial As(V) concentration, pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, iron leaching and the effects of competing ions on As(V) removal were evaluated. Results demonstrated that high amount of arsenate (961.5   μg   g −1 ) was adsorbed at pH 7.5 in 14   h contact time. Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models were used to analyze the adsorption data, whereas Langmuir model was found to best represent the data with a correlation co-efficient ( R 2   =   0.999). Thus, As(V) sorption on Fe-HBC surface suggested monolayer adsorption and indicated surface homogeneity. Moreover, the dimensionless parameter ( R L ) value calculated to be about 0.118 that reiterated the process is favorable and spontaneous. The influences of competing ions on As(V) removal decreased in the following order: PO 4 3 − > HCO 3 − > F − > Cl − PO43−>HCO3−>F−>Cl− . The profound inhibition effects of PO 4 3 − PO43− revealed a high affinity toward iron(oxy) hydroxide. Life-cycle assessment confirmed that spent HBC is non-hazardous and can be used as a promising sorbent for arsenic removal.

Facile fabrication of core–shell/bead-like ethylenediamine-functionalized Al-pillared montmorillonite/calcium alginate for As(V) ion adsorption

Yongcun Song,Songyan Wang,Li-Ye Yang,Di Yu,Yang-Guang Wang,Xiao-kun Ouyang

In this study, a MT(Al)/calcium alginate [MT(Al)@CA] microsphere structure was prepared using sodium alginate (SA) and MT(Al). In order to achieve [MT(Al)@CA] microspheres with a high stability and chemical resistance, glutaraldehyde was used as the crosslinking agent to graft the microspheres and ethylenediamine (ED) into a new type of ED-functionalized MT(Al)@CA microsphere structure similar to a core–shell-type structure [MT(Al)@CA-ED]. This core–shell/bead-like structure was characterized and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The adsorption performance of the core–shell/bead-like structure for As(V) in solution was studied. The effects of the initial As(V) concentration, reaction time, pH, and different reaction temperatures on the reaction process were studied. The results indicate that at a pH of 4, the removal rate of As(V) by the core–shell/bead-like MT(Al)@CA-ED could reach 94.85% after 150 min. The adsorption process is highly consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model (R 2  = 0.9983) and pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R 2  = 0.9973). The maximum adsorption capacity could reach 61.94 mg/g. Regeneration experiments showed that the adsorption efficiency of As(V) after six cycles was >80%.

Opposite effects of dissolved oxygen on the removal of As(III) and As(V) by carbonate structural Fe(II)

Tian Zeyuan,Feng Yong,Guan Yiyi,Shao Binbin,Zhang Yalei,Wu Deli

Freshly prepared carbonate structural Fe(II) (CSF) was used to immobilize As(III) and As(V) in wastewater under oxic and anoxic conditions. Dissolved oxygen was found to exert opposite effects on these two arsenic species. The sorption density of As(III) was higher under oxic conditions, whereas that of As(V) was higher under anoxic conditions. X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopic analyses indicated that crystalline parasymplesite (Fe(II) 3 (AsO 4 ) 2 ·8H 2 O) was formed when As(V) was removed under anoxic conditions, while an amorphous Fe-As-containing precipitate was formed when As(III) was removed under oxic conditions. The distribution of arsenic and iron between the solution and sediments suggested that the oxidation of structural Fe(II) promoted coprecipitation process and inhibited surface complexation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analyses revealed that more As(III) was oxidized under oxic condition, which contributed to a higher sorption capacity for As(III). The formation of parasymplesite through surface complexation/precipitation was proposed to be more effective for the removal of As(V) by CSF, while As(III) was more efficiently removed through coprecipitation. Together, the results suggest that CSF may be an effective material for sequestering both As(III) and As(V). In addition, attention should be paid to the dissolved oxygen content when remediating different arsenic species.
