Hybrid C2H2/dust/air explosion characteristics of CaC2 in the presence of water drops

Shi-Xiang Song,Yang-Fan Cheng,Xiang-Rui Meng,Hong-Hao Ma,Wen-Tao Wang,Wen-Yuan Wang,Shuai-Qi Sun

The explosion characteristics and influential factors of suspended calcium carbide (CaC 2 ) dust were studied using a 20-L spherical vessel. Acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH) 2 ) are the reaction products of CaC 2 and water. Therefore, C 2 H 2 /Ca(OH) 2 mixture was used as the reference sample in the experiment. Experimental results showed that the water content in the environment (air relative humidity and external water drops) had significant impacts on CaC 2 dust explosion. The explosibility of CaC 2 dust enhanced with the increasing air relative humidity In the experiments, CaC 2 dust and dry water were equally proportioned when the value of stoichiometric ratio R was 1. When the concentration of hybrid CaC 2 /dry water increased, the value of P ex of CaC 2 /dry water explosion rose first and then stabilized at 0.74   MPa, and the value of (d P /dt) ex showed a trend of rising first and then declining after reaching the maximum value of 238.25   MPa   s −1 . P ex and (d P /dt) ex of pure C 2 H 2 explosion and C 2 H 2 /Ca(OH) 2 hybrid explosion increased at the early stage and then decreased for the increasing C 2 H 2 content. P ex and (d P /dt) ex of the three samples increased in the following order: hybrid CaC 2 /dry water   <   hybrid C 2 H 2 /Ca(OH) 2   <   pure C 2 H 2 . Dry CaC 2 dust did not explode, but its explosibility was significantly enhanced for the increasing water content in the environment, and the main reason was the existence of C 2 H 2 .

Thermodynamic and kinetic synergetic separation of CO2/C2H2 in an ultramicroporous metal-organic framework

Chaohui He,Peng Zhang,Yong Wang,Yujuan Zhang,Tuoping Hu,Libo Li,Jinping Li

The selective removal of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) is an important separation process in the petrochemical industry, but is challenging due to the similar physicochemical properties of the two gases. Using CO 2 -selective adsorbents that have preferential affinity for CO 2 over C 2 H 2 in pressure swing adsorption was deemed a promising separation method for the separation of CO 2 /C 2 H 2 mixtures. Herein, we report an ultramicroporous metal-organic framework, Y-bptc, to achieve efficient separation of CO 2 /C 2 H 2 through thermodynamic and kinetic synergetic effects. The unique cage-type structure interconnected by small windows exhibits high adsorption capacity for CO 2 while efficiently impeding adsorption diffusion of C 2 H 2 , which was proved by the single-component equilibrium and kinetic adsorption curves. Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) molecular calculations further show that the µ 3 -OH − of the framework have a stronger adsorption affinity for CO 2 through forming hydrogen bonds. Breakthrough experiments using Y-bptc as a CO 2 -selective adsorbent proved that high-purity C 2 H 2 (>99%) could be directly produced from one-step separation of CO 2 /C 2 H 2 (1/1, v/v) mixtures, which greatly reduced the separation process and energy consumption. In addition, the structure of Y-bptc due to the high charge density of the Y6 cluster has high stability under humid and high-temperature conditions adding to the application possibility in industry.

An anion-pillared ultra-microporous MOF with synergistic binding sites for efficient C2H2/CO2 separation

Xin Li,Jiping Mu,Yibo Fu,Xiaofang Su,Zhenzhen Wang,Zhiyong Li

The separation of acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) from carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and its subsequent storage remain formidable challenges in the petrochemical industry due to their nearly identical kinetic diameters and similar physical properties, which render conventional adsorption methods inefficient. Herein, we report an anion-pillared ultra-microporous metal–organic framework, Ni-TiF 6 -T4PP, engineered with tailored pore geometry and selective binding sites to achieve efficient C 2 H 2 /CO 2 separation. This material exhibits a high C 2 H 2 uptake of 3.99 mmol g −1 at 298 K and 1 bar. The pore environment, enriched with nitrogen and fluorine sites, promotes host–guest interactions with C 2 H 2 , resulting in a substantial differential in the isosteric heats of adsorption (Q st ): 36.04 kJ mol −1 for C 2 H 2 versus 19.35 kJ mol −1 for CO 2 . Combined with its low regeneration energy barrier, the framework can be readily regenerated, contributing to its recyclability. Breakthrough experiments demonstrate achieves separation performance for equimolar C 2 H 2 /CO 2 mixtures. At 353 K, a C 2 H 2 mixture with an initial concentration of 90% can be purified to achieve a final purity of > 99.2%. Based on the combined evidence from in situ infrared spectroscopy and molecular simulation, the underlying gas adsorption mechanism has been conclusively established that the extended π-surfaces of porphyrin and pyridine moieties enable multipoint cooperative binding with C 2 H 2 .

Scalable Copper-Based Coordination Frameworks with Tailored Pore Chemistry for Energy-Efficient C2H2/CO2 Separation

Hao-Ling Lan,Su-Tao Zheng,Li Xu,Guowei Guan,Qing-Yuan Yang

The separation of C2H2/CO2 mixtures for acetylene purification presents both industrial significance and fundamental challenges due to their nearly identical kinetic diameters and similar physical properties. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of ultramicroporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in addressing this challenge through precise pore confinement effects. We report two ultramicroporous porous materials: Cu(cyhdc) (cyhdc2- = trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate) and Cu(bdc) (bdc2- = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) and investigated their performance of capturing C2H2. At ambient conditions, both materials exhibit high C2H2 sorption capacities (1.92mmol g-1 for Cu(cyhdc) and 1.44mmol g-1 for Cu(bdc)). The most promising candidate is Cu(cyhdc), which shows decent C2H2 uptake capacity and a pretty high C2H2/CO2 selectivity (8.45 at 298K and 1 bar). Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations revealed that the enhanced performance originates from multiple van der Waals interactions between C2H2 molecules and the curved cyclohexane-derived pore walls of Cu(cyhdc). Importantly, dynamic breakthrough experiments and scalable synthesis processes validated the practical separation potential of Cu(cyhdc) for C2H2/CO2 mixtures. This work provides both mechanistic insights into gas-framework interactions and a potential solution for energy-efficient acetylene purification.

Decoding the zeolite cage effect in one-step ethylene purification from CO2/C2H2/C2H4 mixtures

Hongwei Chen,Xiangqiong Jiang,Binyu Wang,Yongheng Ren,Bin Zhang,Jiabao Gui,Xili Cui,Linbing Sun,Jiuxing Jiang,Wenfu Yan,Jinping Li,Libo Li

Utilizing physical adsorption for ethylene purification from complex mixtures can significantly reduce the energy cost for production. The purification of multi-component systems through a single adsorption process presents a considerable challenge, largely stemming from the absence of customized strategies and thorough investigations into adsorption behaviours. We aim to understand adsorbents through a unique cage recognition approach and leverage these insights to develop an effective purification adsorbent, with the successful synthesis of SSZ-16 zeolite meeting requirements for multi-component purification. This zeolite, featuring a long aft supercage and a narrow gme cage construct two adsorption cages. The dense π -electron cloud of C 2 H 2 enables a stronger interaction in aft cage, while CO 2 is selectively captured within the environmentally compatible gme cage, demonstrating significantly higher C 2 H 2 and CO 2 adsorption capacity. The separation experiments reveal that SSZ-16 exhibits exceptional performance, with an unprecedented polymer-grade C 2 H 4 productivity of 2099.16 L/kg from the CO 2 /C 2 H 2 /C 2 H 4 mixture.

Reversed CO2/C2H2 separation via combined adsorption kinetics and diffusion differences in MOF-polymer mixed matrix membrane

Bin Yu,Tianhao Lan,Hui Wang,Linxuan Han,Yutao Liu,Jinping Li,Libo Li

The reverse separation of CO 2 /C 2 H 2 offers energy benefits while presents strategical challenges due to the similar molecular sizes of CO 2 /C 2 H 2 and the preferential adsorption/solution of C 2 H 2 by most adsorbents and membranes. However, except for thermodynamic factors, kinetic diffusion can also play a pivotal role, particularly embodied in the membrane-based separation process where permeation is governed by the combined effects of solubility and diffusion. Here, we report a mixed matrix membrane (MMM) incorporating a metal-organic framework (MOF), KAUST-7, that selectively blocks C 2 H 2 while allowing rapid CO 2 diffusion to implement a diffusion dominated, CO 2 -selective reverse separation process. Tetrafluoroborate ions (BF 4 − ) is introduced in situ as a structure-directing agent (SDA) during the synthesis of KAUST-7(BF 4 − ), which offers a regular and nanoscale morphology, and more uniform dispersion and enhanced interfacial compatibility within the polymer matrix. The resulting MMM, incorporating 10 wt% of KAUST-7(BF 4 − ), exhibits a CO 2 /C 2 H 2 selectivity of 11.36 and a CO 2 permeability of 571.74 Barrer, demonstrating for the first time the potential of membrane-based CO 2 /C 2 H 2 separation and probably stimulating intense exploration of CO 2 /C 2 H 2 separation membranes.

Insights into the Ultra-High Volumetric Capacity in a Robust Metal–Organic Framework for Efficient C2H2/CO2 Separation

Yi-Ming Gu,Hai-Feng Qi,Tan-Tan Sun,Xiao-Wei Liu,Salman Qadir,Tian-Jun Sun,De-Fu Li,Sheng-Sheng Zhao,David Fairen-Jimenez,Shu-Dong Wang

The efficient separation of C2H2/CO2 is a challenging problem due to their similar physical properties. This is in addition to the risk of explosion when pressuring C2H2 over 2.07 bar. Besides, understanding the framework–guest and guest–guest interactions is also critical to achieving an optimal separation. Herein, we report the development of a robust and low-cost adsorbent, MIL-160(Al), with an extremely high acetylene volumetric capacity of 227 cm3(STP)/cm3 and high C2H2/CO2 selectivity of 7.1 under ambient conditions. We combine in situ solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and in-depth theoretical calculations to unravel the synergistic interactions, driven by the hydrogen bonding of C2H2-MOF, and the electrostatic interactions between C2H2 molecules in the confined ångström-scale pores. This suitable pore confinement is also reflected in the rotation of the MOF ligands and the resultant evolution in the interacting distances between the metal–organic framework (MOF) backbone and C2H2 molecules. Acetylene is adsorbed as a unique dimer in MIL-160(Al), leading to an extremely efficient packing inside the pores. Breakthrough experiments confirm the efficient performance of MIL-160(Al) in real C2H2/CO2 mixtures, showing a C2H2-volumetric breakthrough performance superior to any previous MOF.

The C2H2-GGAT Regulatory Module Fine-Tunes Glutamate Homeostasis to Improve Fruit Flavour and Enhance Disease Resistance in Peach

Yike Su,Xiaojuan Yang,Chanyuan Wu,Xianyao Jin,Yuanyuan Zhang,Yuyan Zhang,Kunsong Chen,Mingliang Yu,Bo Zhang

Free amino acids (FAAs) play a fundamental role in determining fruit quality and stress adaptation, yet their genetic regulation remains poorly understood. Through an integrated approach combining metabolomic and sensory analyses of 120 peach ( Prunus persica ) hybrids, we identified glutamate as a key metabolite linking FAA content to umami taste perception. By combining genome-wide association studies (GWAS) with expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) mapping, we identified PpGGAT1 (glutamate:glyoxylate aminotransferase) and the zinc finger transcription factor PpC2H2-3 as central regulators of glutamate metabolism. Functional characterisation revealed that overexpression of PpGGAT1 led to reduced glutamate levels and diminished umami intensity, whereas PpC2H2-3 transcriptionally suppresses PpGGAT1 to enhance glutamate accumulation. Notably, elevated glutamate levels enhanced resistance to Monilinia fructicola infection, with both genes showing significant expression changes during the progression of brown rot disease. Comparative analysis further indicated that freestone cultivars exhibit superior glutamate accumulation, a trait confirmed across 100 commercial varieties. Our findings reveal a novel regulatory module, PpC2H2-3-PpGGAT1, that coordinately modulates fruit flavour quality and defence responses against pathogens. This study provides mechanistic insights into FAA regulation in fruit crops and identifies actionable molecular targets for the development of varieties with enhanced sensory attributes and disease resistance.

Catalytic function of Y2O3-based catalyst in chemical looping synthesis of C2H2 from inorganic C and H2O at moderate temperatures

Zhenpan Chen,Huibin Liu,Jie Cai,Gexing Meng,Liqin Zeng,Cen Zhang,Fangfang Zhao,Kuiyi You,He’an Luo

Chemical looping technology offers promising opportunities for converting CO 2 /H 2 O to high value-added products (e.g., CO, H 2 , and C 2 H 2 ) by using well designed metal oxides as oxygen carriers. Herein, the calcium oxide (CaO) was used as oxygen carrier to synthesize acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) from inorganic carbon material (e.g., active carbon (AC)) and H 2 O via chemical looping route, which is constituted by two basic steps: solid-phase synthesis of calcium carbide (CaC 2 ) (redox reaction) and C 2 H 2 production (metathesis reaction). To further enhance the energy utilization efficiency of this chemical looping process, transition metal oxides (ZrO 2 , La 2 O 3 , and Y 2 O 3 )-based catalysts were used to promote the solid-phase redox reaction between CaO and carbon reactants. Compared with blank test, 5 wt% cubic Y 2 O 3 as a catalyst that added into CaO-AC mixture can further increase the CaO conversion by ∼40% under optimal conditions and the onset solid-phase reaction temperature between CaO and AC decreases to ∼1620 °C. This catalytic effect is ascribed to the enhanced chemical reaction at the solid–solid interface of CaO and AC reactants and promoted ionic conductivity (e.g., Ca 2+ , O 2– conduction) of the bulk after adding Y 2 O 3 catalyst, leading to a decreased average apparent activation energy ( E a ) (∼909 kJ mol −1 ) of CaC 2 formation. Our work demonstrates that constructing of catalytic solid-phase reaction system by adding selected transition metal oxides as catalysts can effectively reduce the E a of solid-phase CaC 2 synthesis and enhance the overall efficiency of chemical looping synthesis of C 2 H 2 , which sheds light to synthesize organic compounds from inorganic materials in large scale.
