High-performance sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) require not only non-aqueous electrolytes with high ion conductivity but also high interfacial compatibility with both electrodes. Ether-based electrolytes are considered one of the most promising electrolyte systems for SIBs due to the advantages of high reduction stability and weakly desolvating power. However, conventional ether-based electrolytes are easy to decompose and deteriorate on the cathode/electrolyte interface under high voltage, which greatly restricts their practical application in SIBs. Herein, a novel and effective interfacial stabilization strategy is proposed and systemically investigated. A homogeneous and compact cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) film rich in fluorides and borides can be successfully constructed on the cathode surface by pre-cycling of NVP@C cathode in the NaODFB-DEGDME electrolyte. The ODFB anion-derived CEI film can effectively inhibit the continuous oxidation decomposition of NaPF 6 -DEGDME electrolytes. As a result, the Na||NVP@C half-cell can stably cycle for 1500 cycles with high average Coulombic efficiency (CE, >99.7 %) at 5C. This work illustrates the significance of the composition and structure of CEI film for improving the interfacial stability of high-voltage SIBs with ether-based electrolytes.

Graphical Electrolyte cosolvent : We employed methyl (2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) carbonate (FEMC) as a co-solvent for the [LiTFSI] 3 [Pyr 14 FSI] 4 (ILE) to enhance the cycling stability cathode materials. Experimental results indicate that the introduction of FEMC can effectively form a LiF-rich cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) layer, which effectively suppress the cracking of secondary particles and contribute to enhance the performance of the high-mass loading of Li||LiFePO 4 (LFP) cells. Ionic liquids (ILs) are promising electrolyte candidates for high-safety and stability lithium metal batteries. However, their practical application is hindered by high viscosity resulting in a poor wettability of separator and sluggish Li + transport at room temperature. Herein, a weakly-solvating solvent of methyl (2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) carbonate (FEMC) is employed as a co-solvent in non-flammable ionic-liquid electrolyte (ILE) which composed with N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis (fluorsulfonyl) imide (Pyr 14 FSI) and bis (trifluoromethanesulfonyl) sulfonimide lithium salt (LiTFSI), effectively ameliorates the shortcomings of ILs mentioned above without sacrificing its safety character. Compared with pure ILE, the addition of FEMC can distinctly decrease the polarization voltage and electrode-electrolyte interface resistance. With the assistance of FEMC solvent, the discharge specific capacity of Li||LiFePO 4 (LFP) and Li||LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 (NCM622) cells are significantly improved. The origin of this great improvement is contributed to the exceptionally stable and LiF-rich cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer formed in this electrolyte. Additionally, Li||LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) cells exhibit a remarkable rate capability (105 mAh g −1 at 2 C rate), achieve an initial specific capacity of 202.8 mAh g −1 and outstanding capacity retention of 88.2 % over 100 cycles.

In recent years, there has been notable advancement in the development of high-performance materials for sodium-ion batteries, particularly in layered oxide cathodes. However, research on enhancing the interface between electrolytes and cathodes remains nascent. One promising approach involves the addition of electrolyte additives, recognized for their cost-effectiveness and efficiency in bolstering the electrode/electrolyte interface to enhance material stability during high-voltage cycling. In this work, we investigate the use of glutaric anhydride (GA) as an electrolyte additive to improve the cycling stability of NaNi 1/3 F 1/3 M 1/3 O 2 /Na (NFM/Na) high-voltage sodium-metal batteries. Batteries using GA-containing electrolytes demonstrate impressive capacity retention: 80.51 % after 200 cycles at 4.0 V and 76.01 % after 150 cycles at 4.1 V. The research delves into the mechanistic insights behind GA’s effectiveness in enhancing cyclic stability. Theoretical calculations reveal that GA plays a crucial role in modifying the structure of the first solvation shells, promoting the formation of an elastic cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI) film enriched with O C O groups. This uniform and stable CEI film effectively preserves the material’s crystal structure and mitigates the dissolution of transition metals, thereby prolonging battery lifespan under demanding extremely cycling conditions.

Ternary high-nickel oxide exhibits a relatively high working voltage compared with traditional lithium battery cathodes (LiFePO4, etc.). Consequently, it has been widely studied in recent years and is at the forefront of research on positive electrodes for power batteries. To achieve higher reversible capacity, it is often necessary to increase the battery operating voltage. However, there are many drawbacks to this method, such as surface cracking of the working electrode and serious side reactions with the electrolyte. The novel dual-additive combination in this work has the potential to significantly address the aforementioned issues. A composite polymer cathode–electrolyte interface (CEI) film is formed on the surface of the cathode due to two aromatic compound additives preoxidation. The stable CEI film not only improves the stability of the electrode but also suppresses solvent and hydrofluoric acid (HF) to effectively inhibit the side reaction on the cathode surface. Furthermore, these two additives can be readily reduced at the anode to form a solid electrolyte interface (SEI) membrane containing rich LiN&LiF, which effectively suppresses the formation of lithium dendrites. The battery capacity retention could be up to nearly 83% on the dual-additive electrolyte compared to the baseline electrolyte after 300 cycles. This work may provide more possibilities for future research on high-voltage lithium batteries.

Nickel-rich layered cathodes (for example, NCM811) hold great promise for practical applications in high-energy density lithium-ion battery technology. However, a nickel-rich cathode has poor cyclic stability because of the structure degradation induced by repeated cycles and excessive formation of thick cathode–electrolyte interface (CEI) layers. Poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) is a typical binder used to form a positive electrode, which nevertheless lacks the functionality to suppress structure degradation and control CEI layer formation. A new concept is proposed in this work to use a multi-functional block copolymer of poly(ether imide)-block-poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PEI-b-PDMS; abbreviated as PEMS) as the binder for the nickel-rich cathode. Unlike the conventional PVDF binder, the PEMS binder is capable of inhibiting crack formation within the NCM811 particles to retard structure degradation over cycles because of its elastomeric feature. The PEMS binder also enables tuning the composition of the CEI layer and inhibits the formation of overly thick CEI layers because the carbonate solvent molecules are excluded from the solvation sheath by the PEMS binder. Enhanced electrolyte affinity is exhibited by the electrode with the PEMS binder as evidenced by the contact angle measurement. Improved carbon black dispersion within the electrode is achieved by the PEMS binder because the PEI aromatic chain has strong affinity toward the carbon black particles. Both the cycling and rate performance of the NCM811 cathode is improved with the PEMS binder compared to the PVDF binder. In detail, the capacity retention is increased from 63.9 to 80.6% after 200 cycles at 0.5 C (1 C = 205 mAh g–1) when the PVDF binder is replaced by the PEMS binder. The rate performance at current densities of 2 and 5 C is increased significantly due to enhanced electrochemical kinetics.

Ni-rich layered oxides are attractive cathode materials for advanced lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high energy density. However, their large-scale application is seriously hindered by their interfacial instability, especially at a high cut-off potential. Here, we demonstrate that trimethoxyboroxine (TMOBX) is an effective film-forming additive to address the interfacial instability of LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) material at a high cut-off voltage of 4.5 V. We find that TMOBX decomposes before carbonate solvent and forms a thin cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer on the surface of the NCM811 material. This TMOBX-formed CEI significantly suppresses electrolyte decomposition at a high potential and inhibits the dissolution of transition metals from NCM811 during cycling. In addition, electron-deficient borate compounds coordinate with anions ( P F 6 − , F − , etc.) and H 2 O in the battery, further improving the battery's stability. As a result, adding 1.0 wt% of TMOBX boosts the capacity retention of a Li||NCM811 cell from 68.72% to 86.60% after 200 cycles at 0.5C in the range of 2.8–4.5 V.

Polyethylene oxide (PEO) organic solid electrolyte is regarded as one of the important research directions of next-generation battery technology due to its good electrode interface compatibility, mechanical flexibility, and economic processability. However, the low ionic conductivity, limited electrochemical stability, and flammability of PEO have restricted its large-scale application. This work reports the synthesis of multifunctional flame-retardant microspheres (HCCP-THEIC, HT) using hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and 1,3,5-tris(2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate (THEIC), and subsequently incorporation into PEO. It has been demonstrated that the crystallinity of PEO is reduced under the synergistic effect of physical hindrance from HT and the weak intermolecular hydrogen-bond interactions between HT and PEO. This promotes the dissociation of lithium salts, leading to an increase in the mobility and concentration of free Li + , thereby expanding the electrochemical window to 4.7 V. More importantly, HT stabilizes the electrode-electrolyte interface, promotes the formation of stabilized constituents in both the SEI (solid electrolyte interphase) and CEI (cathode electrolyte interphase) layers, and effectively suppresses lithium dendrites growth. The LiNi₀.₈Mn₀.₁Co₀.₁O₂ (NCM811)//Li cell retains 77.4 % of its capacity after 100 cycles at 4.3 V and 0.5C. Additionally, HT enhances fire safety through free radical scavenging and condensed-phase carbonization, reducing the heat release of pouch batteries by approximately 10 %. This simple and scalable HT synthesis offers a promising approach for producing safe, high-performance, and stable all-solid-state lithium metal batteries.

Bis(neopentyl glycolato)diboron (BNGDB) is used as a electrolyte additive to improve the stability of commercialized lithium ion batteries operating at a high charging-cutoff voltage. Adding of BNGDB lowers the oxidation potential of the electrolyte, which will lead to the formation of a uniform, stable, and low resistance cathode solid electrolyte interphase (CEI) on the cathode surface. This CEI film can suppress the loss of electrolyte by preventing further reaction between electrolyte and cathode material (LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2), which improves cyclic stability and discharge capability of LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2/graphite pouch cells. With 0.5 wt% BNGDB addition, the pouch cell demonstrate a discharge capacity retention of 83.2% after 200 cycles in base electrolyte. This work brings new insight into the role of additives in electrolytes and can guide the design of more versatile electrolytes for commercialized lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) based on LiNi x Co y Mn 1-x-y O 2 (NCM) cathode materials have been widely commercialized, because of their high energy density, favorable rate performance, and relatively low cost. However, with increased Ni content to further increase their energy density, their cycling stability deteriorates dramatically and thus fails to meet the commercial application requirements. The artificial cathode-electrolyte-interphase (CEI) is a promising approach to solve this problem. Here, a robust CEI is fabricated through in situ polymerization of ethylene carbonate induced by aluminum isopropoxide (AIP). By adding 1 wt.% AIP in a commercial electrolyte, the capacity retention of LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 ||Li cell at 1 C rate has been significantly increased from 80.8% to 97.8% with a highly reversible capacity of 176 mA h g −1 after 200 cycles. AIP can be also used as an additive during the slurry-making process, enabling a reversible capacity of 170 mA h g −1 for LiCoO 2 after 200 cycles even at a high charge cut-off voltage of 4.6 V. It is confirmed that the in situ formed CEI layer can prevent the cathodes from cracking and reduce the irreversible phase transformation.

Na-ion batteries are considered as promising battery systems for large-scale energy storage. Although Na-ion batteries exhibit enhanced low-temperature cycling performance compared with lithium-ion batteries, there is still a great challenge to overcome for practical low-temperature applications. In this work, we propose a low-performance Na-ion battery composed of FeNi co-doped Mn-based Prussian cathode (FeNi-MnHCF) and a low-concentration electrolyte (0.5 mol L −1 ) containing a small amount of 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl acetate (ETFA, 1 wt%). The introduction of ETFA could decrease the viscosity , increase ionic conductivity and change the solvation structure of the electrolyte at low temperature. ETFA could also participate in constructing a uniform, stable, and Na-ion conductive CEI layer, enabling rapid Na-ion transport and effective protection of FeNi-MnHCF. The cells with the ETFA-contained electrolyte and FeNi-MnHCF cathode exhibit excellent rate capability and long cycle life at low temperature. When being cycled at −20 °C, the cell with ETFA could retain 92.1 % of the capacity after 1120 cycles at 1 C. The cell could also show stable cycling after overcharge to 4.8 V or overdischarge to 1.2 V at −20 °C. This work sheds light on the design of long-life and robust Na-ion batteries for sustainable energy storage at low temperature.

High-energy-density Li-rich layered oxide-based Li-metal batteries depend critically on the unique anionic redox. However, severe electrolyte decomposition and interfacial structural degradation hinder the longevity and stability of Li-rich||Li-metal batteries. Here, we show that a rational hybrid electrolyte design strategy can regulate interfacial chemistry through precise manipulation of cathode surface-exposed nucleophilic species. As a proof of concept, ethyl methyl sulfone is employed as the primary solvent due to its oxidative stability and resistance to nucleophilic attack, simultaneously strategically fabricating a fluorinated ether as a cosolvent that directs nucleophilic reaction toward its targeted functionality. Furthermore, this hybrid electrolyte design simultaneously facilitates the formation of a LiF-rich cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and reorganizes the solid electrolyte interphase on the Li metal from the preferential decomposition of cosolvents and anions. As a result, ultrahigh Coulombic efficiency (CE) (>99.4%) for Li-rich cathodes and enhanced Li-metal plating/stripping reversibility are achieved. Consequently, the optimized electrolyte demonstrates exceptional cycling stability, retaining 92% capacity over 100 cycles with ultrahigh average CE (>99.3%) under demanding conditions (limited Li supply, N/P = 2). Remarkably, this hybrid electrolyte enabled superior operation with anode-free cell architectures and enabled extreme temperatures (−30 to 55 °C) cycling. By effectively transforming detrimental nucleophilic attack into interfacial enhancement, this work establishes a new paradigm for electrolyte design in utilizing anionic redox chemistry.

PEO-based all-solid-state electrolytes are extensively utilized and researched owing to their exceptional safety, low-mass-density, and cost-effectiveness. However, the low oxidation potential of PEO makes the interface problem with the high-voltage cathode extremely severe. In this work, the impedance of PEO-based all-solid-state batteries with high-voltage cathode (NCM811) was studied at different potentials. The Nyquist plots displayed a gyrate arc at low-frequencies for NCM811/PEO interface. Based on the kinetic modeling, it was deduced that there is a decomposition reaction of PEO-matrix in addition to de-embedded reaction of NCM811, and the PEO intermediate product (dehydra-PEO) adsorbed on the electrode surface leading to low-frequency inductive arcs. Furthermore, the distribution of relaxation time shows the dehydra-PEO results in the kinetic tardiness of the charge transfer process in the temporal dimension. Hence, an artificial interface layer (CEI x ) was modified on the surface of NCM811 to regulate the potential of cathode/electrolyte interface to prevent the high-voltage deterioration of PEO. NCM/CEI x /PEO batteries exhibit capacity retentions of 96.0%, 84.6%, and 76.8% after undergoing 100 cycles at cut-off voltages of 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3 V, respectively. Therefore, here the failure mechanism of high-voltage PEO electrolyte is investigated by EIS and a proposed solving strategy is presented.
