Enhancing the oxidation and ablation resistance of Cf/HfB2-SiC composite via active cooling

Xinhui Geng,Ping Hu,Fei Wang,Wuju Wang,Liancai Xun,Chengfan Yuan,Xinghong Zhang

The increasing flight velocities of hypersonic vehicles require breakthroughs in active cooling technology to ensure the oxidation and ablation resistance of key thermal structures such as nose cones and windward surfaces. To achieve such a goal, we pioneered the active cooling approach by introducing arranged active cooling channels in the C f /HfB 2 -SiC composite, through which the temperature of the C f /HfB 2 -SiC composite could be significantly reduced under high heat flux tests. Intriguingly, with the increase of heat flux, the amplitude of temperature reduction exhibited a significant increasing trend. Specifically, under the heat flux of 4 MW/m 2 , the surface temperature of the C f /HfB 2 -SiC composite was reduced from exceeding 2000 to 1500 °C, achieving a temperature reduction of over 500°C. The composite sample also maintained excellent structural integrity under 2–4 MW/m 2 heat flux over a test time of 300 s. These results not only highlighted the substantial advantages of the aligned channel active cooling strategy but also provided a new avenue for developing ceramic matrix composites and structures in extreme environmental applications.

Yumin An,Mingyao Song,Kun Wan,Yongna Jia,Yi Yang,Yehong Cheng

The anisotropic friction properties of biomimetic C f /ZrB 2 -SiC ceramic composites with fibers disposed along Bouligand structures are analyzed. First, the friction properties parallel to and vertical to the hot-pressing surfaces are analyzed for the C f /ZrB 2 -SiC ceramic composites with different carbon fiber contents. The anisotropy of friction properties of the biomimetic C f /ZrB 2 -SiC ceramic composites with Bouligand structures is analyzed based on the microstructures of wear surfaces. Second, the anisotropic friction properties of biomimetic C f /ZrB 2 -SiC ceramic composites with Bouligand structures under high speed and wet conditions are also explored. Under various working environments, the wear mechanisms including abrasive wear , adhesive wear , oxidation wear, and fatigue wear are analyzed in detail based on the microstructures of the wear surfaces. This paper provides a good reference for analyzing the anisotropic friction properties of ceramic composites with Bouligand structures.

Electricity generation coupled with hydrogen production at room temperature by lignin-derived aldehyde flow fuel cell based on Ag-CuxO/CF electrocatalyst

Zixin Xie,Xihong Zu,Qianwei Lai,Yicheng Cao,Xueqing Qiu

Hydrogen production by biomass electrolysis offers a promising and sustainable route for producing green hydrogen and high-value utilization of biomass. However, this process consumes electricity and suffers from low anode Faraday efficiency of the organic electro-oxidation reaction. Herein, we develop a novel strategy that integrates a room-temperature, high-power lignin-derived aldehyde flow fuel cell (FFC) with hydrogen production, which converts the power-consuming electrocatalytic hydrogen production step into an electricity-generating process. The highly active Ag-Cu x O/CF (copper foam) electrocatalyst exhibits dual functionality of efficient electricity generation and simultaneous hydrogen production by catalyzing low-potential aldehyde group oxidation at the anode, which concurrently releases electrons and generates hydrogen. The Ag-Cu x O/CF electrocatalyst can significantly improve the electron transfer rate and catalytic conversion efficiency of the anode, attributable to its mixed Cu 0 /Cu + valence states, enlarged double-layer capacitance (C dl ), reduced interfacial resistance, and optimized adsorption capacity. The Ag-Cu x O/CF catalyst achieves ∼95 % benzaldehyde conversion and ∼98.4 % Faradaic efficiency for hydrogen production at 0.35 V RHE . Furthermore, the FFC based on Ag-Cu x O/CF electrocatalyst demonstrated excellent dual-functionality at room temperature, achieving both a power density of 173.5 mW cm −2 and a hydrogen production rate of 1.96 mmol cm −2 h −1 . The constructed FFC achieved a room-temperature power density threefold greater than the reported lignin-based power generation technology, while maintaining comparable hydrogen production rate to biomass electrolysis processes. This study provides a novel approach to reduce the cost of green hydrogen production and mitigate the global energy crisis.

Direct electrochemical grafting of crystalline PAEK macromolecule on carbon fiber to enhance the interfacial properties of PEEK/CF composites

Shengdao Wang,Shuwen Zhang,Yanchao Yang,Zhongxin Dong,Guibin Wang

Electrochemical grafting of diazonium salts have been applied to improve interfacial properties of carbon fiber and matrix resin . However, these graft modifications are still limited to general-purpose carbon fiber reinforced resin matrix composites such as epoxy. In this research, the direct grafting of Poly (aryl ether ketone) (PAEK) macromolecule on carbon fiber was achieved with mild condition. Firstly, aniline was introduced into Poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) as pendent group to improve solubility and amino terminated group was introduced as precursor of diazonium salt. Then the graft was conduct through diazonium salt reduction. After modification, the aniline side group could be hydrolyzed off to recover crystallinity . To further analyze the graft, single molecular-force spectroscopy was introduced to investigate the surface of carbon fiber. Impressively, the extension curve suggested the PAEK macromolecule had been attached to surface through strong interaction. Combined this with XPS data, it was believed that the graft was a success. As a result, the grafted polymer along with the polymer that physically absorbed on carbon fiber in electrolyte can cooperate to strengthen the interface. The interfacial shear strength of the grafted carbon fiber and PEEK increased from 42.27 MPa to 97.33 MPa by 130.26%. The improvement mainly originated from the covalent bonding that connected the carbon fiber and the graft coating layer as well as the great compatibility between the graft coating layer and the matrix resin. These results also demonstrated the possibility to graft high performance polymers on carbon fiber through one-step modifications.

Synergistic magnetic/dielectric loss and layered structural design of Ni@carbon fiber/Ag@graphene fiber/polydimethylsiloxane composite for high-absorption EMI shielding

Lu Xu,Ranran Si,Qi Ni,Jiaan Chen,Jiale Zhang,Qing-Qing Ni

Simultaneously achieving excellent shielding effectiveness (SE) and high absorption rate of flexible electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials has become a growing demand for the new generation of highly integrated electronic devices. This study constructed a double-layer polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) EMI shielding composite film, with the upper layer using Ni-plated carbon fiber (Ni@CF) as the high absorption loss part and the lower layer using Ag-plated graphene fiber (Ag@GF) as the reflection attenuation part. Due to the synergistic magnetic/dielectric loss effect in the upper layer, high electrical conductivity in the lower layer, and the shielding mechanism of “absorption-reflection-reabsorption” induced by the double-layer structure, this composite film achieves efficient EMI shielding performance and high absorption characteristics in the X-band. The EMI SE values of the 2 mm thick film containing 0.03 wt% Ni@CF and 1.2 wt% Ag@GF reach 33.7 dB, while shielding effectiveness of reflection ( SE R ) and absorption ( SE A ) is 0.8 dB and 32.9 dB, respectively. This result means that the composite film only reflects 17.2 % of the microwaves while shielding 99.9 % and absorbs nearly 82.7 %, exhibiting a significant absorption-dominated shielding mechanism. This flexible and efficient shielding film with a high absorption rate suits portable and wearable intelligent electronic products to reduce secondary electromagnetic pollution.

An enzyme-mimicking reactive oxygen species scavenger targeting oxidative stress-inflammation cycle ameliorates IR-AKI by inhibiting pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4

Wenfang He,Chenguang Ding,Ting Lin,Binqi Wang,Wenjing Wang,Zhichao Deng,Taian Jin,Yiwei Shang,Danna Zheng,Ting Bai,Mingzhen Zhang,Runqing Li,Juan Jin,Qiang He

Rationale : Ischemia-reperfusion-induced acute kidney injury (IR-AKI), characterized by the abrupt decline in renal function, is distinguished by the intricate interplay between oxidative stress and inflammation. In this study, a reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger-CF@PDA was developed to effectively target antioxidant and anti-inflammatory pathways to disrupt the oxidative stress-inflammation cycle in IR-AKI. Methods : UV-vis absorption spectra, FTIR spectra, and TEM were employed to determine the successful construction of CF@P. ABTS, TMB, and NBT analyses were performed to detect the antioxidant ability and enzyme-mimicking ability of CF@P. In vitro and in vitro , the antioxidant/anti-inflammatory effect of CF@P was detected by MTT, qPCR, fluorescence, and flow cytometry. Multi-omics revealed the mechanism of CF@P in IR-AKI therapy, and molecular docking was further used to determine the mechanism. MRI and photoacoustic imaging were employed to explore the dual-mode imaging capacity of CF@P in IR-AKI management. Results : CF@P could disrupt the oxidative stress-inflammatory cascade by scavenging ROS, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines, and modulation of macrophage polarization. Subsequent multi-omics indicated that the renal protective effects may be attributed to the inhibition of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4 (PDK4). Metabolomics demonstrated that CF@P could improve the production of antioxidant compounds and reduce nephrotoxicity. Additionally, CF@P exhibited promising capabilities in T1-MRI and photoacoustic imaging for AKI management. Conclusions : Collectively, CF@P, possessing antioxidant/anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting PDK4, as well as imaging capabilities and superior biocompatibility, holds promise as a therapeutic strategy for IR-AKI.

NiCoP/NiOOH nanoflowers loaded on ultrahigh porosity Co foam for hydrogen evolution reaction under large current density

Yuantao Pei,Liang Huang,Lei Han,Haijun Zhang,Longhao Dong,Quanli Jia,Shaowei Zhang

Developing user-friendly electrodes for efficiently producing hydrogen from water to substitute non-renewable fossil fuels is one of the challenges in the hydrogen energy field. For the first time, we have prepared self-supporting ultrahigh porosity cobalt foam loaded with NiCoP/NiOOH nanoflowers (NiCoP/CF) via freeze-drying and phosphorization. The as-prepared hierarchical NiCoP/CF electrodes showed superior catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. The one resulted from phosphorization at 350 °C (NiCoP/CF-350) only required overpotential of −47, and −126 mV to deliver geometrical current density of −10 mA cm −2 and −100 mA cm −2 , respectively, demonstrating improved catalytic activity than the electrodes prepared using a commercial nickel foam as a support. Moreover, it could retain its superior stability at a current density higher than −500 mA cm −2 for 16 h. Such an outstanding performance can be attributed to the ultrahigh porosity of Co foam support, optimal adsorption energies of HER intermediates (H∗), facile water dissociation on the NiCoP/NiOOH hetero-interfaces, and the assistance of NiOOH facilitating the electrons transfer from the Co foam inside to the NiCoP outside. The work would provide a new strategy for future design of advanced HER electrocatalysts.

Effect of OA-POSS Nano-Modification on the Microstructure of Ultrahigh Modulus CF and the Corresponding Failure Mechanism of CF/EP Composites

Jing Wang,Xin Qian,Keyu Shi,Yao Wu,Yonggang Zhang,YuSen Liu,Tao Yu

CFRP composites face limited application due to weak interfacial bonding, especially for ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers (CFs) with a tensile modulus exceeding 500 GPa. In this study, a novel approach involving the grafting of octaaminopropyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OA-POSS) nanoparticles onto ultrahigh modulus CFs was developed to optimize the interfacial bonding with ultrahigh modulus CF and epoxy resin (EP). Comprehensive characterization demonstrated that OA-POSS modification significantly altered the physicochemical structure of the fiber surface; for example, surface roughness increased from 10.3 to 18.1 nm, and the O/C ratio increased significantly from 0.060 to 0.232, confirming the successful introduction of abundant polar functional groups by OA-POSS. The CF-POSS/EP composites exhibited a peak compressive strength of 282.60 MPa (at 3 wt% POSS) and an interlaminar shear strength of 63.05 MPa (at 2 wt% POSS), corresponding to improvements of 31.50% and 20.70%, respectively, over the untreated samples. The performance improvement stems from OA-POSS nanoparticles forming covalent bonds via reactive amino groups, enhancing mechanical interlocking through increased surface roughness, and acting as a stress-relief interphase to promote crack deflection and energy dissipation. This altered the failure mechanism from interfacial separation to matrix internal cracking, enabling more efficient stress transfer across the interface.

Stable and recyclable Fe3C@CN catalyst supported on carbon felt for efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate

Chuanyi Guo,Chaofa Chen,Jiaying Lu,Du Fu,Cheng-Zong Yuan,Xi-Lin Wu,Kwun Nam Hui,Jianrong Chen

Stable and recyclable catalysts are crucial to the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) based advanced oxidation process (AOPs) for wastewater treatment . Herein, nitrogen-rich carbon wrapped Fe 3 C (Fe 3 C@CN) on carbon felt (CF) substrate was synthesized by using Prussian blue (PB) loaded CF as the precursors. The obtained Fe 3 C@CN/CF catalyst was applied for degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) via the heterogeneous catalytic activation of PMS. Results showed that ~91.7%, 95.2%, 98.1% and 99.1% of BPA (20 mg/L) were eliminated in the Fe 3 C@CN/CF + PMS system within 4, 10, 20 and 30 min, respectively. The fast degradation kinetics is attributed to the production of abundant reactive species ( OH, SO 4 − and 1 O 2 ) in the Fe 3 C@CN/CF + PMS system, as demonstrated by the electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and quench experiments. The Fe 3 C@CN/CF catalyst was stable and can be easily recycled by using an external magnet. The results indicated that the nanoconfined Fe 3 C endowed Fe 3 C@CN/CF with high stability and magnetic property and enabled the efficient electron transfer for PMS activation. This study provides a cost-effective approach for the fabrication of stable and recyclable Fe 3 C@CN/CF catalyst, and shed a new light on the rational design of multifunctional catalyst for advanced water remediation.

Electro-reduction induced fast metal redox cycle on Co3O4-CuO@CNTs/Copper foam cathode for enhanced Fenton-like reaction

Lu Cui,Di Wu,Xiaomei Liu,Yang Li,Xiaobin Fan,Fengbao Zhang,Guoliang Zhang,Wenchao Peng

In this study, free-standing Co 3 O 4 -CuO/CF electrodes are synthesized via an electrodeposition-annealing process and then protected by dip-coated carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The obtained Co 3 O 4 -CuO@CNTs/CF is employed as cathode to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of Bisphenol A (BPA) in an electrochemical system. The electrochemical assistant (EA) plays a critical role to accelerate metal redox by donating electrons sustainably, and the fast regeneration of Co 2+ /Cu + could be achieved to promote chemical-catalysis for PMS activation, which is proved via the pre-electroreduction treatment. The rate constant of Co 3 O 4 -CuO@CNTs/CF/PMS system with EA is ∼ 4.4 times compared to the system without EA. It also exhibits an excellent stability, which could still remove over 90% of BPA after eight cycles in 45 min. In addition, the coating of CNTs could decrease leaching of metals effectively. According to quenching tests and electron spin-resonance spectroscopy (ESR), the presence of EA could enhance the radical route by producing more SO 4 •− and •OH greatly, which is also proved by much faster degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) and atrazine (ATZ) than that without EA. This work reveals activation mechanism of PMS in the electrochemical system, and provides an effective strategy to achieve the fast metal redox cycle for effective and long-term pollutant degradation.

Ultrafast Pressure Sintering of Cf/SiC Composites Within 60 s

Houcai Kan,Jianjun Chen,Hao Chen,Qingfeng Zeng

The widespread industrial adoption of carbon fiber-reinforced silicon carbide (C f /SiC) composites is currently hindered by the long processing cycles and high energy consumption of traditional fabrication methods. This study presents a novel ultrafast pressure sintering method for fabricating C f /SiC composites. Densified C f /SiC ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) were achieved in 60 s by using borosilicate as a liquid-phase sintering aid. Under optimal processing conditions, the resulting composites exhibited a bulk density of 2.06 g/cm 3 , open porosity of 2.64%, flexural strength of 188.1 ± 15.5 MPa, and fracture toughness of 5.96 ± 0.11 MPa·m 1/2 . This work presents a facile and ultrafast technique that significantly reduces the manufacturing time of C f /SiC composites, paving the way for their broader industrial applications.
