Yb 2 SiO 5 ceramics, serving as a new-generation material for environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) on the hot-end components of aero-engines, encounter challenges of high-temperature infiltration and corrosion from CaO-MgO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (CMAS) melts during operation. In this study, femtosecond laser micro-nano processing technology was used to construct periodic bulk structures and conical structures on the surface of Yb 2 SiO 5 . The design of both structures can significantly increase the surface roughness. Among them, after the conical structure was modified by femtosecond laser technology, the proportion of non-polar C C bonds on the surface increased from 69% to 75%. Benefiting from the combined effect of the microstructure and special chemical groups, the surface of the periodic conical structure achieves hydrophobicity, with a static contact angle of 135.2°. At high temperatures, the initial contact angle of the CMAS melt on the conical structure is 83°, which is close to the Cassie-Baxter state, and the stable contact angle is 28°, which is 2.3 times that of the original surface (12°). In addition, after 6 h of CMAS corrosion at 1250 °C, the conical structure still showed clear contours and skeletons, which also proves that the preparation of periodic microstructures by femtosecond laser technology can improve the CMAS resistance to wetting and corrosion performance. The results of this study provide valuable insights and a basis for the research on the resistance of Yb 2 SiO 5 coatings to high-temperature adhesion and corrosion of CMAS melts.

Gd 2-x Zr 2+x O 7+x/2 ceramics were used to determine how nonstoichiometry in ceramic phases governs CMAS corrosion. All compositions retained a fluorite average structure, but Raman spectroscopy, sintering behaviour and grain growth revealed composition-dependent non-stoichiometry-driven disorder before CMAS contact. During heating, characteristic CMAS spreading temperatures depended only slightly on nonstoichiometric composition, whereas spreading rate and final spreading extent vary markedly with nonstoichiometry. After exposure at 1300 °C, all samples developed a dense inner layer and a fully reacted layer, following approximately linear and square-root time dependences of layer thicknesses, respectively. All nonstoichiometric ceramic compositions outperformed the stoichiometric composition, but the mechanistic origins of these effects were distinctly different depending on the type of nonstoichiometry, defined by different reaction products and layer-specific chemical partitioning. CMAS resistance is therefore strongly influenced by how nonstoichiometry directs competition between corrosion layers.

The thermochemical reaction behaviors between Y 2 O 3 and calcium-magnesium-aluminosilicate (CMAS) at 1250 °C∼1400 °C were investigated. A continuous-dense reaction layer mainly composed of Y-apatite phase quickly forms within 15 min, and its slow increasing thickness depends on the molten CMAS infiltration along the Y-apatite grain boundaries, the dissolution of the Y-apatite phase into the melt, the inhibiting effect on the CMAS penetration, and the reaction time and temperature. The CMAS crystallization occurs due to the change of chemical composition and the formation of other reaction products. The dense reaction layer shows good resistance to the molten CMAS infiltration.

Xenotime-type high-entropy rare-earth phosphates (HE-REPO 4 ) are promising ceramics for environmental barrier coatings (EBCs), owing to their remarkable tunability of thermophysical properties and corrosion resistance. In this study, three HE-REPO 4 (Dy 0.2 Ho 0.2 Er 0.2 Tm 0.2 Yb 0.2 )PO 4 (HE-REPO 4 -1), (Dy 0.2 Ho 0.2 Er 0.2 Yb 0.2 Lu 0.2 )PO 4 (HE-REPO 4 -2), and (Dy 0.2 Er 0.2 Tm 0.2 Yb 0.2 Lu 0.2 )PO 4 (HE-REPO 4 -3) are synthesized via coprecipitation followed by fast hot-pressing sintering. All samples have a xenotime-type structure and uniform elemental distribution. With lattice contraction and increased bond strength of the samples, the elastic modulus progressively increases, the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) decreases, and the thermal stability enhances. Among the three samples, HE-REPO 4 -3 displays the best thermal stability, the highest elastic modulus (171 GPa), and the lowest TEC (7.01 × 10 −6 K −1 from 25 to 1200°C). It also exhibits low thermal conductivity and favorable oxygen barrier property. Furthermore, HE-REPO 4 -3 forms a reaction layer primarily composed of Ca 8 MgRE(PO 4 ) 7 , which effectively suppresses Si diffusion during calcium–magnesium–aluminosilicate corrosion at 1300°C. This research provides a new insight into property of xenotime-type HE-REPO 4 for EBC applications.

The CMAS corrosion of high-entropy rare-earth zirconates involves complex reaction mechanisms that are sensitive to B-site chemistry, while the associated reaction pathways are not yet fully understood. This study investigates the CMAS corrosion behavior of (La 0.2 Nd 0.2 Gd 0.2 Ho 0.2 Y 0.2 ) 2 (Zr 1-x Ce x ) 2 O 7 ceramics with varying Ce doping levels (x = 0, 0.125, 0.25, i.e. 5RZ, 5RZC1, 5RZC2). The results indicate that rapid early-stage CMAS penetration in 5RZ is associated with insufficient reaction-layer continuity, whereas Ce-doped samples suppress early penetration by promoting a more continuous reaction layer; at longer durations, 5RZC1 enters a high-viscosity, low-mobility state leading to restricted reaction-layer growth with spinel formation, while 5RZC2 maintains partial melt fluidity and evolves toward coexisting spinel and anorthite. After 20 h of CMAS corrosion at 1300 °C, the reaction-layer thicknesses are approximately 140 μm (5RZ), 104 μm (5RZC1), and 131 μm (5RZC2), indicating the significant role of Ce incorporation in governing corrosion kinetics and final corrosion behavior. These observations indicate that Ce incorporation controls the CMAS–ceramic reaction and the structural and viscosity evolution of the residual melt, determining the corrosion end states and reaction-layer growth.

During high-temperature service of aero-engines, molten Calcium–magnesium–alumina–silicate (CMAS) deposits can infiltrate thermal barrier coatings, posing a severe threat to their long-term stability. This study investigates the CMAS corrosion behavior of two high-entropy rare-earth zirconate ceramics, (La 0.2 Nd 0.2 Sm 0.2 Gd 0.2 Ho 0.2 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 (LNSGH) and (Nd 0.2 Sm 0.2 Gd 0.2 Ho 0.2 Er 0.2 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 (NSGHE). CMAS corrosion tests were conducted at 1300 °C for 5, 10, and 20 h to evaluate their structural stability and corrosion product evolution. The results show that NSGHE exhibits superior resistance to CMAS attack compared to LNSGH. This improvement is attributed to its smaller average RE 3+ ionic radius and reduced optical basicity difference with CMAS, which lowers the chemical driving force for interfacial reactions and thus reduces the tendency for apatite formation. These findings offer theoretical insight into RE 3+ -dependent corrosion mechanisms and suggest a viable high-entropy design strategy for developing structural ceramics with improved chemical stability in high-temperature aerospace environments.

CaO-MgO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (CMAS) will be melted and penetrated into the high-temperature protective coating exceeding 1200 °C, severely compromising its service life. Apatite-phase rare earth silicate, which often emerges as CMAS corrosion product, boasts exceptional thermophysical properties and shows significant promise for high-temperature thermal protection field. In this paper, two novel apatite materials Ca 2+x Gd 8-x (SiO 4 ) 6-x (PO 4 ) x O 2 (x = 1, 2) were synthesized via chemical co-precipitation and conducted CMAS corrosion tests at 1250 °C and 1350 °C, respectively. Results show that Ca 4 Gd 6 (SiO 4 ) 4 (PO 4 ) 2 O 2 readily reacts with CMAS, generating abundant Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 that bonds together, forming a protective barrier layer between the molten CMAS and the underlying ceramic material. The barrier layer is thickened by increasing corrosion time and remains stable over extended periods at 1250 °C. However, when the temperature rises to 1350 °C, the material severely degrades, and the corrosion products fail to form a Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 barrier layer. The Ca 4 Gd 6 (SiO 4 ) 4 (PO 4 ) 2 O 2 shows promise as a new thermal/environmental barrier coating ceramic material, offering resistance to CMAS corrosion at temperatures up to 1250 °C.

This study examines the thermomechanical degradation mechanisms of a high-entropy (Yb 0.25 Er 0.25 Ho 0.25 Y 0.25 ) 2 SiO 5 (4REMS) environmental barrier coating under CMAS melt infiltration. The investigation considers both isothermal and thermal cycling conditions. Under isothermal exposure, the 4REMS coating exhibited excellent corrosion resistance due to the formation of a continuous apatite reaction layer that effectively inhibited melt infiltration. The synergistic dissolution of Yb 3+ , Er 3+ , Ho 3+ and Y 3+ cations in the CMAS melt promoted the formation of this dense layer. However, during cyclic corrosion testing, the emergence of microcracks compromised the structural integrity of the reaction layer, leading to an accelerated penetration rate of corrosive species. Furthermore, periodic temperature fluctuations induced dynamic instabilities in the dissolution-precipitation equilibrium, resulting in pronounced morphological alterations of apatite grains, including enhanced nucleation and coarsening.

The high-temperature interaction of nanostructured Lu 2 Si 2 O 7 environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) with calcium–magnesium–aluminosilicate (CMAS) was investigated at 1400°C for 1, 10, 25, and 50 h to evaluate the coating’s resistance to CMAS corrosion. The results indicate a phase transformation over time, transitioning from Ca 2 Lu 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 apatite and Lu 2 Si 2 O 7 to solely Lu 2 Si 2 O 7 . The interaction of the Lu 2 Si 2 O 7 coating with the CMAS melts was divided into three stages based on the corrosion reaction behavior. The delamination cracks were distributed throughout the interface between the Si bond layer and Lu 2 Si 2 O 7 layer after corroded at 1400°C for 50 h, signifying coating failure. In addition, the influence of monosilicates, disilicates, and corrosion duration on the recession layer thickness was analyzed by comparing previous reports on RE 2 SiO 5 /RE 2 Si 2 O 7 coatings (RE = Gd, Yb, Lu, Er). Furthermore, the variation in the thermally grown oxide layer thickness in CMAS-corroded Lu 2 Si 2 O 7 coatings was systematically investigated.

To address the pressing demands of next-generation aero-engines for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) with low thermal conductivity, high thermal expansion compatibility, and CMAS corrosion resistance, a high-entropy engineered rare earth niobate ceramic, (Gd 0.2 Ho 0.2 Er 0.2 Tm 0.2 Yb 0.2 ) 3 NbO 7 (GHETY), was designed and synthesized. The material exhibits a stable single-phase defective fluorite structure with ultralow thermal conductivity (1.169 W·m −1 ·K −1 at 25 °C) due to enhanced phonon scattering from configurational entropy and lattice disorder. It also shows a high thermal expansion coefficient (10.879 × 10 −6 K −1 at 1200 °C), ensuring good thermal compatibility for TBC applications. Corrosion tests at 1300 °C show that GHETY reacts with molten CMAS to form apatite and RENbO 4 phases. The formation of RENbO 4 depends on both corrosion duration and CMAS supply, with a reaction layer reaching 190.37 μm at 20 h under 50 mg/cm 2 loading. The detailed corrosion behavior observed in this study provides valuable insights into the CMAS corrosion mechanisms of high-entropy rare-earth niobates. These findings highlight the potential of entropy-engineered niobates as candidates for chemically stable and thermally compliant TBCs, offering a promising pathway for next-generation thermal protection systems.

Due to the restriction of CMAS corrosion, the YSZ TBCs are facing great challenges, which accelerates the development of the novel potential thermal barrier materials. This work has investigated the CMAS corrosion resistance of the novel thermal barrier material GdTaO 4 and YbTaO 4 to assess their potential in replacing the traditional YSZ . The results indicate that GdTaO 4 and YbTaO 4 possess excellent phase stability, and there is no phase transition after 150 h sintering at 1350 °C. The crystallization phenomenon has occurred in the residual CMAS when the reaction time is 0.5 h, and the main crystallization product is CaMgSi 2 O 6 . In comparison, when the reaction time increase to 10 h, the crystallization phenomenon has disappeared completely. The maximum reaction layer thickness of GdTaO 4 and YbTaO 4 are ∼10 μm and ∼6 μm after 10 h CMAS corrosion, respectively. The XRD patterns indicate that the main product after 10 h reaction is Ca 2 Ta 2 O 7 . Compared with the CaMgSi 2 O 6 , the Ca 2 Ta 2 O 7 possesses lower formation enthalpy and cohesion energy. With the reaction time rising, the formation of Ca 2 Ta 2 O 7 consumes lots of Ca elements and restrain the formation of CaMgSi 2 O 6 . Besides, the difference of GdTaO 4 and YbTaO 4 in CAMS corrosion resistance is also attributed to cohesion energy. These results indicate that GdTaO 4 and YbTaO 4 exhibit enormous potential to manufacture the novel TBCs in CMAS corrosion resistance compared with the YSZ.

The continual increase in the operating temperature of turbine engines necessitates the development of environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) materials with superior thermophysical properties and enhanced resistance to Cao-MgO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (CMAS) corrosion. Four environmental barrier coatings candidates Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 , (Yb 0.5 Sc 0.5 ) 2 Si 2 O 7 , (Yb 0.25 Sc 0.25 Tm 0.25 Ho 0.25 ) 2 Si 2 O 7 , and (Yb 0.25 Sc 0.25 Tm 0.25 Gd 0.25 ) 2 Si 2 O 7 were prepared. Subsequently, their thermophysical and CMAS resistance properties were tested. Results show that compared to pure Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 , (Yb 0.25 Sc 0.25 Tm 0.25 Gd 0.25 ) 2 Si 2 O 7 reveals superior high-temperature thermophysical properties, which are attributed to its higher CTE (5.16 ×10 −6 K −1 , 1200 °C) and lower thermal conductivity (1.46 W·m −1 ·K −1 , 1200 ℃). Furthermore, (Yb 0.25 Sc 0.25 Tm 0.25 Gd 0.25 ) 2 Si 2 O 7 exhibits a higher CMAS corrosion resistance than pure Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 due to the reaction layer formed by the accumulation of strip and irregular-like apatite. Therefore, (Yb 0.25 Sc 0.25 Tm 0.25 Gd 0.25 ) 2 Si 2 O 7 material emerges as a promising candidate for EBCs, demonstrating exceptional properties at elevated temperatures.
