High performance colored passive daytime radiative cooling device based on a CNC film/cellulose aerogel bilayer structure

Xiaoke Chen,Yuxuan Xue,Rongbing Wan,Tianyu Cai,Zhe Wang,Zhenqian Pang,Tengyao Jiang,Gang Tan

Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) technologies have emerged as a promising solution to reduce energy consumption in air conditioning and facilitate sustainable development. In this work, a colored bilayer cooler (CBC) was fabricated through an energy-efficient and sustainable strategy that integrates unidirectional freeze-drying and hydrogen bond-driven wet adhesion (HBWA). This multifunctional structure provides an innovative and practical approach toward energy-efficient thermal management through the synergy effect of efficient thermal insulation and radiative cooling, along with aesthetically viable property. Such cooler bilayer consists of a colored cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) film as the top layer and a cellulose aerogel as the substrate. The CNC film selectively reflects sunlight through ordered molecular arrangements, endowing the device with structural coloration. The cellulose aerogel contributes an ultralow thermal conductivity of 0.024 W m −1  K −1 , a high solar reflectivity of 90%, and a high mid-infrared emissivity of 94%. Outdoor tests reveal that the CBC can achieve a sub-ambient cooling of 1.9 °C under a solar irradiance of 700 W m −2 , demonstrating exceptional PDRC performance. Leveraging the combined effects of low thermal conductivity and excellent radiative cooling capability, the CBC can reduce cooling energy consumption by over 55% in typical Chinese cities.

Enhancing flame retardancy and heat insulation performances of polyamide 66 composite film by adding CNC/Al2O3 nanohybrids

Xue Ma,Xuefei Chen,Xiaohua Wang,Xiaohua Yang,Zengwen Yao,Houyong Yu,Yunyun Zhang

Polyamide 66 (PA66) has garnered significant attention due to its exceptional properties; unfortunately, its flammability is challenging. Adding flame retardants (FRs) is a primary approach to enhance PA66 flame retardancy. This study developed a highly flame-retardant PA66 composite film by adding corn-like functional nanohybrids (CNC/Al 2 O 3 ). Interestingly, CNC/Al 2 O 3 nanohybrids not only formed hydrogen bond interactions with PA66 but also improved crystallization properties as heterogeneous nucleating agents, resulting in the excellent mechanical properties of PA66 composite film. Remarkably, the incorporation of 3 wt% CNC/Al 2 O 3 nanohybrids into PA66 matrix contributed to increasing the LOI to 28.5 %. The pHRR, THR, and TSR were reduced obviously by 55.7 %, 15.3 %, and 65.2 %, respectively. The excellent flame retardancy of PA66 composite film was attributed to the forming of a compact carbon layer catalyzed by the CNC/Al 2 O 3 nanohybrids. Besides, the homogeneous distribution of CNC/Al 2 O 3 nanohybrids endowed the composite film with excellent heat insulation, and the heat insulation rate was up to 31.9 %. Thus, such PA66 composite films with excellent flame retardancy, heat insulation, and mechanical properties could meet the broader application requirements.

Heteroatom doped cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) with chiral nematic liquid crystal interface for high efficiency removal of ciprofloxacin

Zhihao Zhang,Jing Wang,Huidi Zhang,Yao Deng,Binbin Tan,Jiang Wang,Cuihong Zhang,Hongbo Xiao,Wenlei Wang

The increasing contamination of water systems by ciprofloxacin (CIP) has become a growing concern. The photocatalysis approach offers a promising strategy for the effective removal of CIP. In this study, MS x /CNC (MS x , M = Co, Ni, Cu) binary composites with chiral catalytic interfaces were prepared by chemical precipitation and the composite M 0 -MS y /CNC was prepared by energetic β-particle bombardment. The XPS results confirmed the successful construction of C–O−M bonds. TEM results clearly revealed the generation of sulfur vacancies (Sv) in the composites. The M 0 -MS y /CNC/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) photocatalytic system was also constructed in this study. The results of the application experiments showed that the Co 0 -CoS y /CNC/PMS system had an excellent degradation effect on CIP, which reached 100 % at 1.5 h of open light. The degradation kinetic constants of Co 0 -CoS y /CNC/PMS were 4.26 times higher than those of CoS x /CNC/PMS. In addition, EPR showed that the Co 0 -CoS y /CNC/PMS system generates ‧OH, ‧SO 4 − , ‧O 2 − , and h + radicals to co-remove CIP. This study also elucidated the major intermediates of photocatalytic degradation of CIP at the chiral catalytic interface using LC-MS analysis. This work provides insights into the coupled application of photocatalysis and PMS activation in the remediation of aqueous environments.

Surface-functionalized cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and synergisms with surfactant for enhanced oil recovery in low-permeability reservoirs

Zhe Li,Wan-Li Kang,Meng-Lan Li,Hong-Bin Yang,Tong-Yu Zhu,Ying-Qi He,Hai-Zhuang Jiang,Bo-Bo Zhou,Ji-Ting Hao

Nanocellulose, a natural polymeric nanomaterial, has attracted significant attention in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) applications due to its abundance, nanoscale, high oil–water interfacial adsorption efficiency. In this study, surface-functionalized cellulose nanocrystals (SF-CNCs) were prepared via hydrochloric acid hydrolysis and chemical modification, with adaptable nanosize and considerable dispersion stability in low-permeability reservoirs. The SF-CNCs were structurally characterized by FT-IR, Cryo-TEM, which have a diameter of 5–10 nm and a length of 100–200 nm. The SF-CNC dispersions possessed higher stability and stronger salt-tolerance than those of corresponding CNC dispersions, due to the strong hydrophilicity of the sulfonic acid group. It was synergistically used with a non-ionic surfactant (APG1214) to formulate a combined flooding system (0.1 wt% SF-CNC + 0.2 wt% APG1214). The combined flooding system exhibits strong emulsification stability, low oil–water interfacial tension of 0.03 mN/m, and the ability to alter the wettability for oil-wetting rocks. Furthermore, the combined system was able to provide an optimum EOR efficiency of 20.2% in low-permeability cores with 30.13 × 10 −3  μm 2 . Notably, it can enlarge the sweep volume and increase the displacement efficiency simultaneously. Overall, the newly formulated nanocellulose/surfactant combined system exhibits a remarkable EOR performance in low-permeability reservoirs.

Polydopamine modified cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) for efficient cellulase immobilization towards advanced bamboo fiber flexibility and tissue softness

Tong Qin,Liqin Liu,Haibing Cao,Bin Lu,Shuangxi Nie,Zhengbai Cheng,Xiaohong Zhang,Hongbin Liu,Xingye An

Herein, a green facile approach to improve the flexibility of unbleached bamboo kraft pulp (UBKP) via an immobilized enzyme technology is proposed. Polydopamine (PDA) acts as versatile modification and coating materials of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) for assembling versatile bio-carriers (PDA@CNC). Cellulase biomacromolecules are efficiently immobilized on PDA@CNC to form cellulase@PDA@CNC nanocomposites. The relative enzyme activity , temperature/pH tolerance, and storage stability of cellulase were significantly improved after immobilization. The degree of polymerization treated UBKP decreased by 5.42 % (25 U/g pulp) compared to the control sample. The flexibility of treated fibers was 6.61 × 10 14 /(N·m 2 ), which was 96.93 % higher (25 U/g) compared to the control and 3.88 times higher than that of the blank fibers. Cellulase@PDA@CNC performs excellent accessibility to fiber structure and induces high degree of fibrillation and hydrolysis of UBKP fibers, which contributes high softness of obtained tissue handsheets. The bio-carrier PDA@CNC within paper framework may further enhance tissue tensile strength . This study proposes a practical and environmentally friendly immobilization approach of cellulase@PDA@CNC for improving the hydrolysis efficiency and flexibility of UBKP fibers, which provides the possibility to maintain the strength of tissue paper while improving its softness, thus broadening the high-value application of immobilized enzyme technology in tissue production.

MXene cracked-layer composite sodium alginate/CNC-based hydrogel for robust sensing with high-sensitivity dynamic motion perception

Fengli Huang,Tong Zhang,Zhiheng Yu,Taiyao Pan,Tianyu Zhang,Hao Xue

Conductive hydrogel strain sensors with high stretchability, wide sensing range and high sensitivity have been extensively studied for their potential applications in wearable sensing devices. However, achieving high sensitivity in the low-strain range remains a challenge. In this study, the hydrogel was prepared by blending acrylamide, sodium alginate, and cellulose nanocrystals. The hydrogel substrate was fabricated using the electrohydrodynamic printing method, and hierarchical ultraviolet photopolymerization was employed to achieve effective bonding between the hydrogel substrate and MXene film. Further, the hydrogel composite substrate was pre-stretched to overcome the interfacial stress differences between the MXene film and hydrogel substrate, thereby completing the fabrication of a PAAM-SA 2% -CNCs 3% & MXene (PSC&M) sensor with the designed crack structure. The fabricated strain sensor significantly broadened the detection sensitivity of hydrogel sensors in the low-strain range (Strain: 0–5 %, GF = 23.4) and achieved fast response/recovery times (106 ms / 82 ms), obtaining excellent mechanical properties (0.33 MPa stress, 710 % elongation at break) and electrical conductivity (1.931 mS/cm). Application demonstrations based on the fabricated PSC&M sensors in various human motions, subtle vibration signal monitoring and hand-knuckle rehabilitation training, to show their potential applications in smart devices, e-skin and wearable medical rehabilitation devices.

pH-Responsive Dual-Network PVA Films Integrating CNC-Stabilized Mosla chinensis Essential Oil Emulsions for Active Food Packaging

Huiqiong Wu,Yuxuan Zhu,Huan Liu,Yingying Deng,Zhipeng Wang,Hongning Liu,Zhe Li,Liangshan Ming

This study developed a pH-responsive dual-network polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) active packaging film by integrating cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-stabilizedMosla chinensisessential oil (EO) emulsions with a tannic acid–Fe3+metal–phenolic network (MPN). The CNC-stabilized emulsion improved EO dispersion and retention in the PVA matrix and contributed to network reinforcement through hydrogen-bonding interactions, while the dynamic MPN further strengthened the film structure and acted as a pH-gated domain for regulating EO release. Composite film achieved high UVA and UVB blocking efficiencies of 90.06% and 99.60%, respectively, together with improved mechanical, barrier, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. Compared with neutral conditions (pH = 7), EO release increased by 179.9% and 181.3% at pH = 4 and pH = 9, respectively, confirming the pH-gated release behavior of the film. In yam preservation, composite film effectively delayed browning, weight loss, firmness decline, and spoilage. Metabolomic analysis further indicated that the film treatment regulated phenylpropanoid metabolism and flavonoid biosynthesis, which may contribute to maintaining antioxidant-related metabolic homeostasis. This work offers a pH-responsive controlled-release active packaging strategy for browning-prone fresh produce.

Influence of CNC modification and CO2 curing on the macroscopic, microstructural, and durability properties of foamed concrete grouts

Qun Lu,Aimin Sha,Yujing Chen,Meixuan Li,Zhuangzhuang Liu,Wenxiu Jiao

CNC–CO 2 curing shows a clear synergistic effect. • Optimum at 0.1 wt% CNC and 24 h carbonation. • Strength increases by 44.7% (compressive) and 38.5% (flexural). • Improved durability and CO 2 sequestration capacity. This study aims to improve the inadequate mechanical strength and limited durability of foamed concrete grouting materials. Mixtures with varying cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) dosages and carbonation durations were prepared, and the relationships between macroscopic performance and microstructural evolution were elucidated through multiscale characterization. Durability was further evaluated via wet–dry cycling in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The results indicate that the incorporation of CNC increases the flow time by 2.2%–15.1%, while remaining within acceptable construction limits at dosages below 0.1 wt%. Carbonation reduces the 24 h water absorption by up to 2.78% relative to the control group, while significantly slowing the water release process. Optimal performance was achieved at 0.1 wt% CNC with 24 h carbonation, where the 28 d compressive and flexural strengths increased by 44.7% and 38.5%, respectively. After 120 saline wet–dry cycles, strength retention exceeded 80%, markedly higher than the control group (64.38%). Microstructural analysis revealed that carbonation promoted continuous CaCO 3 precipitation, resulting in a reduction in average pore size and total porosity, and transforming the pore structure from interconnected macropores to a finer and denser configuration. However, excessive CNC dosage or prolonged carbonation reduces compressive strength by approximately 9.6% compared to the optimum and accelerates long-term deterioration. Overall, CNC modification combined with CO 2 curing exhibits a clear synergistic effect, characterized by a distinct threshold behavior. Proper parameter control enabled simultaneous enhancement of mechanical performance, moisture resistance, durability, and CO 2 sequestration potential.

CNC-directed hierarchical porous cellulose/MoS2 shape stabilized PCMs phase change fibers for thermal insulation and infrared stealth

Kang Yang,Chao Duan,Xin Tong,Chuanyin Xiong,Jian Wang,Yonghao Ni

A novel coaxial wet spinning strategy is reported to fabricate shape stabilized phase change aerogel fibers (C f PCF). • The fibers feature hierarchically porous flower-like PUPCM clusters engineered by CNC-directed hydrogen bonding. • The C f PCF exhibits a high phase change enthalpy (115.6 J/g), ultralow thermal conductivity (0.076 W·m −1 ·K −1 ). • The C f PCF fabrics enable outstanding infrared stealth (Infrared detection temperature decreased by 51 °C). The escalating demand for advanced fibrous materials integrating dynamic thermal management and infrared stealth has spurred continuing innovation. Traditional porous phase change fibers (PCFs) suffer from two critical deficiencies: solid-liquid phase change materials (SLPCMs) leakage and gas-solid interface degradation. Herein, we present a novel coaxial wet spinning strategy to fabricate porous shape stabilized phase change fibers (C f PCFs). The aerogel core is prepared via cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)-directed crystallization of polyurethane-based shape stabilized PCMs (PUPCMs) that were synthesized through crosslinking polyethylene glycol with hexamethylene diisocyanate, inherently eliminating liquid leakage. Thanks to strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between CNCs and PUPCMs, in-situ crystallization and assembly of PUPCMs proceed on CNC-directed three-dimensional scaffolds via ice templating, generating flower-like crystal clusters with hierarchical porosity. This unique structure offers dual benefits: 1) Robust anchoring of shape stabilized PUPCM to prevent leakage; 2) Excellent properties of high phase change enthalpy (115.6 J/g) and porosity (69.35%), ultralow thermal conductivity (0.076 W·m −1 ·K −1 ), and superior thermal stability (91.35% enthalpy retention after 600 cycles). The as-woven C f PCF fabric demonstrates exceptional thermal buffering performance, achieving a temperature lag of up to 750 s at 80 °C. This effect stabilizes the temperature through phase-change endothermy and reduces infrared-detected temperatures by 51 °C. This work presents a new pathway for developing next-generation intelligent fibrous materials with integrated functionality.

Preparation and characterization of photothermal-responsive CNC/chitosan composite films loaded with active ingredient nanoparticles from Ziziphus Spinosae Semen

Yangruili Niu,Shiliang Yang,Quan Zhou,Guosheng Liu,Yaning Wang,Jiandong Wang,Yujie Fu

Conventional passive packaging and petroleum-based materials face challenges of insufficient responsiveness and environmental pollution, while existing intelligent packaging lacks sufficient mechanical strength and inherent antibacterial and antioxidant functions. To address these issues and valorize agricultural waste, this study developed a photothermal-responsive composite packaging film. Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (ZSS) active extracts (flavonoids, saponins) were loaded into CaCO 3 -Polydopamine (PDA) Nanoparticles (NPs), and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were prepared from Ziziphi Spinosae pomace via acid hydrolysis. PDA/CNC/chitosan (CS) composite films were fabricated by solvent-casting with CS as the matrix. The optimal 4 % CNC loading enhanced CS film tensile strength by 145 % via hydrogen bonding. CaCO 3 -PDA NPs exhibited superior loading capacity (flavonoids:34.26 %, saponins:26.79 %) and pH-responsive sustained release. The 5 % CaCO 3 -PDA@ZSS-loaded film achieved a 77.0℃ temperature increase within 30 s under near-infrared irradiation, enabling 100 % antibacterial efficiency against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. It also showed strong antioxidant activity (DPPH:72.88 %, ABTS:81.89 %) and improved water vapor barrier properties. Applied to strawberry preservation, the film extended shelf life from 2 to 10 days and exhibited good biodegradability. This work provides a sustainable strategy for multifunctional intelligent fresh food packaging.

Zhangkang Li,Huiyu Bai,Shengwen Zhang,Wei Wang,Piming Ma,Weifu Dong

In this paper, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPPAm), polyacrylic acid (PAA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were used to prepare double-network hydrogels by the photo-crosslinking technology. The results from mechanical and swelling tests indicated that photo-crosslinked PVA/CNC/P(NIPPAm-co-AA) hydrogels exhibited temperature-sensitive, pH-sensitive behaviors and good mechanical strengths. We prepared DN hydrogels, which combined the advantages of PNIPAAm, PAA and photo-crosslinking collectively in the PVA/CNC system, leading to controllable temperature and pH responses and improvement in physical properties. A simple and green method for the preparation of DN hydrogels was demonstrated, offering photo-crosslinked PVA/CNC/P(NIPPAm-co-AA) hydrogels as excellent prospects for applications in the medical field.
