Hypophosphite (P(I)) is ubiquitous in some waste streams. It may contribute to the eutrophication of water bodies, yet conventional methods are ineffective in treating P(I)-laden wastewater. Here, we propose a novel CaO2/ultraviolet (UV) system that can simultaneously remove P(I) and recover Ca-phosphate. This system lies in the simultaneous release of OH–, Ca2+, and H2O2, with the last being activated and producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) under UV irradiation. Subsequently, the generated ROS converts P(I) to phosphite and phosphate, forming Ca-phosphate with the released Ca2+ at pH 11.0. Beyond activating H2O2, UV light also promotes the dissolution of CaO2 powders. The system removes 97.0% of 1.0 mM P(I) in 6 h with dosing 2.0 mM CaO2. The presence of 5.0 mM HCO3– drops P(I) removal from 97.0 to 14.1% by competing with P(V) toward Ca2+. Nitrate and humic acid show similar effects by adsorbing UV light or quenching ROS. However, we may overcome the adverse effects with an enhanced CaO2 dose. For example, with 10 mM CaO2, the CaO2/UV system removed more than 78% of non-ortho P from actual electroless rinse water. These results confirmed that CaO2/UV is an exciting all-in-one system for treating P(I)-laden wastewater and recovering valuable P products.

Developing intelligent antibacterial platforms that dynamically modulate therapeutic activities in response to microenvironmental cues is essential to overcome the self-limiting nature and collateral oxidative damage of conventional chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Herein, a multifunctional and self-adaptive nanozyme platform, denoted as CuPDA@CaO 2 @Qu, is developed. It rationally integrates a copper-based metal-organic gel (CuPDA) for pH-dependent enzyme-mimetic switching, calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ) for endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) self-supply, and the natural flavonoid quercetin (Qu) to reinforce anti-inflammatory and antioxidant functions, collectively enabling synergistic and stage-programmed therapy of infected wounds. Specifically, in acidic infected microenvironments, the peroxidase-mimic CuPDA catalyzes CaO 2 -derived H 2 O 2 into highly toxic hydroxyl radical (·OH), effectively disrupting biofilms and eradicating multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, with enhanced efficacy through glutathione depletion. After bacterial clearance, CuPDA self-switches to antioxidant mode, exhibiting superoxide dismutase-glutathione peroxidase mimetic activities that synergize with Qu to scavenge excess reactive oxygen species (ROS), resolve inflammation, and promote M2 macrophage polarization. Moreover, the nanocomposite is capable of promoting cellular migration, collagen deposition, and neovascularization, significantly accelerating tissue healing. This self-adaptive platform demonstrates potent efficacy in MDR bacterial-infected wounds and offers a promising strategy for intelligent nanomedicine design.

Petroleum-containing waste sludge (PWS) accumulation and internal carbon scarcity are major hurdles in oily wastewater treatment. This study develops a cleaner production strategy using microbubble ozonation (MB-O 3 ) coupled with calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ) activation to simultaneously valorize PWS and remediate hydrocarbons. The MB-O 3 /CaO 2 treatment (initial pH 7.0, CaO 2 dosage of 0.25 g/gTS) released 7620 mg/L of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and 1163 mg/L of volatile fatty acids (dominated by acetic and propionic acid), improving sludge biodegradability by 6.8-fold. Concurrently, 70.3% total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) removal was achieved following pseudo-first-order kinetics, demonstrating broad-spectrum degradation across C 10 -C 40 hydrocarbons. Mechanistic insights reveal that the synergistic effect hinges on the microbubble-enhanced ozone mass transfer and the dual-functional role of CaO 2 in sustained H 2 O 2 liberation and self-driven pH modulation. The transition from •O 2 − dominated alkaline micro-zones to a persistent •OH oxidation regime ensures the synchronous mobilization of entrapped organic carbon and the oxidative cracking of hydrocarbons. Correlation analysis confirms that carbon liberation and TPH removal are mutually reinforcing processes. This strategy facilitates simultaneous waste remediation and carbon liberation, aligning with circular economy principles.

This study investigated the synergetic effect of the combined calcium peroxide (CaO2) and microwave (MW) treatment on waste active sludge dewatering properties and organic contaminants’ removal. The optimal sludge dewaterability was obtained at CaO2 (20 mg/gVSS)/MW (70°C), and the capillary suction time decreased by 52% compared with raw sludge. Further investigation indicated that total extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), tightly bound EPS, total protein, and protein present in tightly bound EPS were closely correlated with sludge dewaterability. Tryptophan, aromatic protein–like substances and humic acid–like substances were the key compounds that affect sludge dewaterability. The charge neutralization and bridge effect of cation ions were strengthened when combined with MW irradiation. In addition, it was revealed that MW facilitated CaO2 to produce more hydroxyl and superoxide anion radicals. This study confirmed CaO2/MW to be an effective way to improve sludge dewatering and remove organic pollutants from sludge.

The simultaneous presence of antibiotics and phosphate (P) in wastewater will threaten human health and ecological security. The purpose of this study is to study the simultaneous removal of oxytetracycline (OTC) and P in water by O 3 /CaO 2 advanced oxidation process. With enhancing CaO 2 dosage, the degradation efficiency of OTC first improved and then declined, whereas the removal efficiency of P kept increasing. Increasing the amount of O 3 increased the removal efficiency of OTC, but had little effect on the removal efficiency of P. With 0.80 g/L CaO 2 and 0.50 g/h O 3 , the removal efficiency of OTC and P reached 98.0 % and 90.5 % respectively. The lower OTC concentration was beneficial to OTC degradation and P precipitation. The P concentration has no effect on OTC degradation, but it would affect itself precipitation. Alkaline environment was conducive to OTC degradation and P removal. ·OH, ·O 2 − , 1 O 2 made major contribution to the degradation of OTC, which was verified by ESR technique and free radical capture experiment. During the degradation of OTC and P removal, TOC and COD values decreased, while pH and conductivity showed a downward trend. Based on UV–Vis spectrum, 3D EEMF spectrum and LC-MS analysis, two main degradation pathways of OTC were proposed. Toxicity analysis of intermediates showed that their toxicity was significantly lower than that of OTC. The O 3 /CaO 2 system can be considered as an efficient and prospective method for the simultaneous removal of OTC and P in water.

During the wound tissue healing process, the relatively weak driving forces of tissue barriers and concentration gradients lead to a slow and inefficient penetration of bioactive substances into the wound area, consequently showing an impact on the effectiveness of deep wound healing. To overcome these challenges, we constructed biocompatible CaO2–Cu2O “micromotors”. These micromotors reacted with the fluids at the wound site, releasing oxygen bubbles and propelling particles deep into the wound tissue. In vitro experimental results revealed that these micromotors not only exhibited antibacterial and hemostatic functions but also facilitated the migration of dermal fibroblasts and vascular endothelial cells, while modulating the inflammatory microenvironment. A methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infected full-thickness-wound model was created in rats, in which CaO2–Cu2O micromotors markedly expedited the wound healing process. Specifically, CaO2–Cu2O provided a sterile microenvironment for wounds and increased the amounts of M1-type macrophages during infection and inflammation. During the proliferation and remodeling stages, the amount of M1 macrophages gradually decreased, while the amount of M2 macrophages increased, and CaO2–Cu2O did not prolong the inflammatory period. Furthermore, the introduction of a regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) film on the wound surface successfully enhanced the therapeutic effects of CaO2–Cu2O against the infected wound. The combined application of oxygen-producing CaO2–Cu2O micromotors and a RSF film demonstrates significant therapeutic potential and emerges as a promising candidate for the treatment of infected wounds.

Recently, the enhancing role of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), a self-decay product of ferrate (Fe(VI)), on Fe(VI) reactivity has received increasing attention. In this study, we found that calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ) as a slow-releasing reagent of H 2 O 2 could also enhance the Fe(VI) performance for removing sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Compared with sole Fe(VI), sole CaO 2 and Fe(VI)-H 2 O 2 systems, the Fe(VI)-CaO 2 system showed higher reactivity to remove SMX. The radical scavenger and chemical probe test results indicated that the better oxidation performance of Fe(VI)-CaO 2 system than Fe(VI) alone was ascribed to the generation of Fe(Ⅳ) and Fe(Ⅴ) rather than • OH. In addition, the performance of Fe(VI)-CaO 2 system for degradation of contaminants was also superior to Fe(VI)-Na 2 SO 3 , Fe(VI)-NaHSO 3 and Fe(VI)-Na 2 S 2 O 3 systems under the same experimental conditions. Moreover, the effects of critical operating parameters, inorganic anions, inorganic cations, and humic acid on the degradation of SMX by Fe(VI)-CaO 2 system were revealed. The Fe(VI)-CaO 2 system exhibited good applicability in authentic water. Finally, the underlying degradation intermediates of SMX by Fe(VI)-CaO 2 system and their toxicity were confirmed. In conclusion, this study provides a new strategy for enhancing the oxidation capacity of Fe(VI) and comprehensively reveals the oxidation mechanism.

The low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in groundwater is one of the key challenges limiting the efficiency of aerobic microbial remediation, leading to the development of slow-release oxygen agents such as CaO 2 . Our previous studies have demonstrated that the oxygen content in biochars plays a role in the oxygen release reaction of CaO 2 . This study aims to further investigate the relationship between the oxygen-containing functional groups on biochar surface and oxygen release performance of CaO 2 . Surface oxidation and reduction modifications were employed to regulate the oxygen-containing functional groups on bamboo biochars while minimizing alterations to its physical structure. Results showed that the oxidized and reduced biochars were similar in oxygen content (∼20–22 %) and pore structure (with specific surface area of 8–16 m 2 ·g −1 and average pore size of 10–13 nm). On the contrary, the difference in contents between C-O and O C-O functional groups reached ∼10 %, indicating the successful regulation of the oxygen-containing functional groups. The loading capacity of CaO 2 increases with the increase in C-OH groups in biochars, while the O C-O group is identified as the oxygen-containing functional group that contributes most significantly to accelerating the oxygen release of CaO 2 . The dissolution product hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) potentially interacted with biochars to activate free radical synthesis. The yield of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) shows a positive correlation with the oxygen content in biochars, while the production of superoxide radicals (•O - 2 ) is most significantly influenced by the presence of O C-O groups. As a result, the yield of •O - 2 was 216–317 times higher than that of •OH.

Polydopamine (PDA) has shown charming co-catalytic activity in the classical Fenton and Fenton-like reactions. However, the improvement is merely attributed to the Fe 2+ regeneration ability of PDA. The co-catalytic role and cycling stability of PDA in the CaO 2 based Fenton-like reaction have been rarely explored despite CaO 2 is considered safer than the liquid H 2 O 2 . In this study, floatable co-catalysts were fabricated by coating PDA on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sponges. It is proven that in the composite can accelerate not only the Fe 3+ reduction but also the reaction between Fe 2+ and H 2 O 2 released by CaO 2 . Therefore, lower concentrations of Fe 2+ and H 2 O 2 in the CaO 2 /Fe 3+ Fenton-like system were detected respectively, along with higher efficiency in Rhodamine B (RhB) removal. In addition, in the reusing test, the RhB degradation still maintained at 81.2% after the fifth cycle. The reasons for the decreased activity were carefully investigated. First, the RhB adsorption is largely disturbed by the Ca 2+ and Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ ions adsorbed during the reaction. Secondly, both declined Fe 2+ regeneration and H 2 O 2 consumption were observed, due to the reduced content of phenolic hydroxyl groups on the PDA surface.

Prolonged and incurable bacterial infections in soft tissue and bone are currently causing large challenges in the clinic. Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been designed to address these issues, but materials with satisfying therapeutic effects are still needed. Herein, CaO2-loaded 2D titanium carbide nanosheets (CaO2-TiOx@Ti3C2, C-T@Ti3C2) were developed. Surprisingly, this nanosheet exhibited sonodynamic ability, in which CaO2 caused the in situ oxidation of Ti3C2 MXene to produce acoustic sensitiser TiO2 on its surface. In addition, this nanosheet displayed chemodynamic features, which promoted a Fenton reaction triggered by self-supplied H2O2. We detected that C-T@Ti3C2 nanosheets increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in response to sonodynamic therapy, which displayed an ideal antibacterial effect. Furthermore, these nanoreactors facilitated the deposition of Ca2+, which promoted osteogenic transformation and enhanced bone quality in osteomyelitis models. Herein, a wound healing model and prosthetic joint infection (PJI) model were established, and the C-T@Ti3C2 nanosheets played a protective role in these models. Taken together, the results indicated that the C-T@Ti3C2 nanosheets function as a multifunctional instrument with sonodynamic features, which might reveal information regarding the treatment of bacterial infections during wound healing.Graphical Abstract

Carbonaceous materials (CMs) have been applied extensively for enhancing the catalytic performance of environmental catalysts, however, the self-catalytic mechanism of CMs for groundwater remediation is rarely investigated. Herein, we unveiled the catalytic ability of various CMs via Fe(III) reduction through polyvinyl alcohol-coated calcium peroxide nanoparticles (PVA@nCP) for trichloroethylene (TCE) removal. Among selected CMs (graphite (G), biochar (BC) and activated carbon (AC)), BC and AC showed enhancement of TCE removal of 89% and 98% via both adsorption and catalytic degradation. BET and SEM analyses showed a higher adsorption capacity of AC (27.8%) than others. The generation of solution-Fe(II) and surface-Fe(II) revealed the reduction of Fe(III) on CMs-surface. The role of O-containing groups was investigated by the FTIR technique and XPS quantified the 52% and 57% surface-Fe(II) in BC and AC systems, respectively. EPR and quenching tests confirmed that both solution and surface-bound species (HO•, O 2 − • and 1 O 2 ) contributed to TCE degradation. Acidic pH condition encouraged TCE removal and the presence of HCO 3 − negatively affected TCE removal than other inorganic ions. Both schemes (PVA@nCP/Fe(III)/BC and PVA@nCP/Fe(III)/AC) exhibited promising results in the actual groundwater, surfactant-amended solution, and removal of other chlorinated-pollutants, opening a new direction towards green environmental remediation for prolonged benefits.

Water scarcity is one of the most pressing global challenges and limits economic and social development. Multiple processes of current technologies for water purification are needed to meet water quality objectives due to their contaminant-specific removal capability. Here, we developed Fe 0 @SiO 2 @CaO 2 nanocomposite with three layers of core–shell structure that could achieve an array of water contaminants removal by oxidation, reduction, and flocculation. >99 % of 50 mg/L tetracycline, 20 mg/L pentachlorophenol, 450 mg/L Cd(Ⅱ), 20 mg/L Cr(Ⅵ), or 80 mg/L P (in form of PO 4 3− ) was removed by 2 g/L Fe 0 @SiO 2 @CaO 2 in 24 h. Moreover, Fe 0 @SiO 2 @CaO 2 (2 g/L) showed an excellent performance in turbidity removal (239 mg/L kaolinite suspension, removal rate > 99 %) and water decolorization (50 mg/L humic acid, removal rate > 93 %). Cd(II) and Cr(VI) could be reduced to Cd(0) and Cr(III), respectively, through electronic reduction reactions using Fe 0 and •H, which is formed during the reaction Fe 0 + 2H + →2•H + Fe 2+ ; Cd(Ⅱ) and the formed Cr(III) could coprecipitate with the formed orthosilicic acid and OH − . The removal of P was mainly resulted from the coordination with released Ca 2+ and iron compounds. Charge neutralization by nanocomposite and coagulation with the products from nanocomposite transformation were responsible for the kaolinite removal. Reduction by •H and Fe 0 , oxidation by •OH derived from the Fenton reaction, and/or coagulation accounted for the organic contaminant removal. This work provides a novel material that can be used to simultaneously remove a range of contaminants in wastewater treatment.
