Preparation and Study of the Adsorption Performances of (Mg,Ca,Ba)Fe2O4 Magnetic Porous Materials for Removal of Cd(II) Heavy Metal Ion from Water Environment

Chen Yu,Liu Miao

Abstract A modified polyacrylamide gel route with urea used as fuel was used to synthesize the MFe 2 O 4 (M = Mg, Ca, Ba) iron oxides with high adsorption capacity for removal of Cd(II) from water treatment. The phase structure, functional group, porous structure and adsorption performance of MFe 2 O 4 (M = Mg, Ca, Ba) iron oxides were characterized by X-ray-diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherm and 721 spectrophotometer. The result indicates that the phase forming temperature of MFe 2 O 4 , the content of carbonate ion in MFe 2 O 4 increases with the increasing of the radius of M-site metal ion. The E g value, BET surface area and adsorption capacity for removal of Cd(II) from water treatment decreases with the increasing of the radius of M-site metal ion. The experimental isotherm of MFe 2 O 4 (M = Mg, Ca, Ba) iron oxides were described by the Langmuir model. MgFe 2 O 4 iron oxide exhibits a best adsorption performance for removal of Cd(II) from water treatment by the adsorption process, with a maximum adsorption capacity of ca. 221.36 mg/g than that of other iron oxides. The present synthetic route could be possibly extended to synthesize other porous metal oxide materials with special porous structures for various applications.

Phosphate modified magnetite@ferrihydrite as an magnetic adsorbent for Cd(II) removal from water, soil, and sediment

Haoyang Fu,Hongfei He,Runliang Zhu,Lan Ling,Weixian Zhang,Qingze Chen

This work successfully fabricated a novel magnetic adsorbent, i.e., phosphate modified magnetite@ferrihydrite (Mag@Fh-P), and explored its potential application for Cd(II) removal from water, soil, and sediment. To synthesize the adsorbent, ferrihydrite-coated magnetite (Mag@Fh) was firstly developed with partially acid-dissolved natural magnetite particles, followed by in-situ synthesis of ferrihydrite on magnetite surface via alkali addition. Selection of natural magnetite as iron source for ferrihydrite synthesis and as magnetic core is believed to save the cost of adsorbent. Then, phosphate was loaded on Mag@Fh by impregnation-heating treatment to produce Mag@Fh-P. Batch adsorption experiments revealed that the Cd(II) adsorption on Mag@Fh-P could reach equilibrium within 60 min, and the calculated adsorption capacity using Langmuir model was 64.1 mg/g, which was significantly higher than that on magnetite (0.44 mg/g) and Mag@Fh (23.9 mg/g). The results from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and batch adsorption experiments confirmed that both ligand exchange and electrostatic attraction contributed to Cd(II) adsorption. Besides, Mag@Fh-P can also be an efficient amendment for soil and sediment remediation. The spent Mag@Fh-P could be easily recovered via magnetic separation, accompanied by the significant decrease in total Cd(II) concentration in soil/sediment. At an adsorbent dosage of 2 wt%, 0.82 and 0.74 mg/kg of total Cd(II) in soil and sediment was removed, respectively. In all, the synthesized Mag@Fh-P as adsorbent has the merits of cost effectiveness, fast adsorption rate, high adsorption capacity, and easy separation, and thus it has promising application for the removal of heavy metal cations from water, soil, and sediment.

Nearly monodisperse ZnS nanoparticles for portable recognition, enrichment and detection of Cd(II)

Jianrong Guo,Juan Wu,Junhui He,Yan Xue

As cadmium ions (Cd 2+ ) pose a serious threat to environment and human health, it is significant to develop portable, fast-response and sensitive Cd 2+ sensors for both real-time and on-site collection of such critical information. In this study, nearly monodisperse ZnS nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared and used to recognize, enrich and detect Cd 2+ ions. ZnS NPs demonstrated fast adsorption kinetics towards Cd 2+ ions (removing 99.3 % of Cd 2+ in 12 min), surpassing previously reported multiple Cd 2+ adsorption materials. Upon adsorbing Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ ions via substitution reaction, ZnS NPs gain strong peroxidase activity, and demonstrate the ability to selectively detect Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ ions among common metal ions . By further conjugating with our previous HSnS NFs (Hollow SnS nanoflower) nanosensor to eliminate the interference of Cu 2+ , the ZnS NPs nanosensor could selectively detect Cd 2+ ions with recoveries above 80 %. The ZnS NPs nanosensor can cover a wide range of Cd 2+ concentration from 0.5 to 100 μg L −1 with an extremely low detection limit of 0.38 μg L −1 . When coupling to a portable RGB sensor, as low as 0.5 μg L −1 Cd 2+ ions could be reached on-site for river water, giving an outstanding recovery of 99.4 %. The current results provide a new avenue to the on-site detection of Cd 2+ ions, and would doubtlessly contribute to the future construction of portable and intelligent sensor arrays towards complex environmental samples.

Simultaneous removal of Cd(II) and 2-chlorophenol from aqueous solution using activated carbon supported titanate nanotubes

Xianping Deng,Peiwen Wu,Xiaodong Du,Guining Lu,Yanyan Gong,Zhi Dang,Dongye Zhao

Combined heavy metals and chlorinated organic compounds have been widely reported in industrial wastewater. Yet, simultaneous removal of these contaminants remains challenging. In this study, a bi-functional composite (TNTs@AC) was prepared based on commercial titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) and activated carbon (AC) and tested for simultaneous removal of Cd(II) and 2-chlorophenol (2-CP). Under the action of high temperature and pressure, TiO 2 was transformed into titanate nanotubes (TNTs) and bound to AC, and in the meanwhile, nanoscale AC particles were patched on the TNTs. In the mixed TNTs and AC phases, TNTs was responsible for taking up Cd(II), whereas AC for 2-CP. As such, the relative adsorption capacities of the composite for Cd(II) and 2-CP varied with the mass ratio of TiO 2 :AC, with decent uptakes for both chemicals in the mass ratio rage of 1:3 ∼1:1. TNTs@AC (prepared at TiO 2 :AC = 1:1) demonstrated fast sorption kinetics and high sorption capacities for both Cd(II) and 2-CP, with a maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of 109 and 52 mg/g, respectively, in the single solute systems. In the binary systems, the adsorption capacity of Cd(II) was not affected by the presence of 2-CP, whereas the presence of Cd(II) slightly increased the uptake of 2-CP in the low Cd concentration domain (final Cd < 7 mg/L) but mildly inhibited the uptake at Cd > 7 mg/L. The dominant adsorption mechanism of Cd(II) was ion exchange between Cd(II) and Na + /H + of the -ONa/H group of TNTs; while AC served as the primary sink for 2-CP via hydrophobic interaction along with some other possible mechanisms such as surface complexation and hole filling. TNTs@AC also performed well under common environmental conditions (pH, common co-ions, and dissolved organic matter). The formation of mixed TNTs and AC microphases appears promising for simultaneous removal of heavy metals and organic compounds from contaminated water.

Cr(VI), Pb(II), Cd(II) adsorption properties of nanostructured BiOBr microspheres and their application in a continuous filtering removal device for heavy metal ions

Xingqi Wang,Wenxia Liu,Jian Tian,Zhenhuan Zhao,Pin Hao,Xueliang Kang,Yuanhua Sang,Hong Liu

Uniform well-defined nanostructured BiOBr microspheres have been fabricated via a simple hydrothermal method in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and ethylene glycol (EG). The heavy metal ion adsorption on the as-synthesized nanostructured BiOBr microspheres was systematically assessed by measuring the residual concentration during the adsorption process using a colorimetric method for Cr(VI) concentration, and an extraction-colorimetric method for Cd(II) and Pb(II) concentrations. The nanostructured BiOBr microspheres showed good removal capacity for heavy metal ions (Cr, Cd, Pb), and excellent adsorption properties for low concentration heavy metal ions, indicating potential applications in water purification. Based on the quick and efficient heavy metal ion removal ability of nanostructured BiOBr microspheres, a continuous filtering-type water purification device was designed and constructed. In using this continuous filtering type water purification device, 1 g of adsorbent can purify about 4900 g of Pb(II) contaminated water, 5900 g of Cd(II) contaminated water, or 21 500 g of Cr(VI) contaminated water having initial concentrations of 200 μg L−1 to successfully attain the World Health Organization standard for drinking water. The good removal capacity can be attributed to the hierarchical nanostructure, which displays a large specific surface area and strong adsorption of heavy metal ions.

Retracted: Two new Cd(II) complexes: Luminescent properties and treatment activity on infantile bronchial pneumonia by reducing the over releasing of the inflammatory cytokines

Mei-Ling Chen,Wang Wang,Ling Xu,Jin-Feng Zhu

Reactions of polycarboxylate ligand (2,2′-H 2 bpdc or H 3 OABDC), N-donor auxiliary ligand (4-bpmh) with Cd(II) salts under solvothermal conditions resulted in two coordination polymers formulated as [Cd(2,2′-bpdc)(4-bpmh)(H 2 O)] n ·n(H 2 O) ( 1 ) and [Cd 3 (OABDC) 2 (4-bpmh) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ] n ·2n(H 2 O) ( 2 ) (2,2′-H 2 bpdc = diphenic acid, H 3 OABDC = 5-oxyacetate isophthalic acid, and 4-bpmh is N,N-bis-pyridin-4-ylmethylene-hydrazine). Meanwhile, the investigations of luminescent performances and thermal stabilities suggest that the two compounds are candidate materials for the fluorescent emitting material. The assessment of their application values on the infantile bronchial pneumonia was carried out and their specific mechanism was investigated in the meantime.

Cotransport of nano-hydroxyapatite and different Cd(II) forms influenced by fulvic acid and montmorillonite colloids

Mengmeng Wu,Erping Bi,Binghua Li

Soil colloids can affect the cotransport of nanoparticles and pollutants. In this study, the influencing mechanisms of organic fulvic acid (FA) and inorganic montmorillonite colloid (MONT) on the cotransport of nHAP and Cd(II) were investigated. Column experiments combined with Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory, attachment efficiency calculation and two-site kinetic retention model were applied to study the mechanisms. Results showed that the co-existence of FA or MONT made the transport of nHAP improved by 58–75% and 33–59%, respectively. Both of them could improve the stability of nHAP particles and enhance electrostatic repulsion between nHAP particles and sand. Retention of nHAP in the sand was mainly caused by secondary energy minimum and physical straining. The co-existence of FA or MONT changed the amount of adsorbed species of Cd(II) and decreased the retardation effect of nHAP on Cd(II) transport. With increasing FA concentration, soluble FA·Cd and suspended nHAP·FA·Cd complexes in the system increased. Transport of soluble Cd(II) and total Cd(II) were strengthened due to the concentration effect of FA and the improved stability of nHAP particles. With increasing MONT concentration, the amount of soluble Cd(II) decreased, but that of colloidal Cd(II) (nHAP·Cd and MONT·Cd) increased. Due to the stronger effect of colloidal Cd(II) change than that of the soluble Cd(II) change, the transport of total Cd(II) was improved by 34–57%. The findings of this study can help to understand the fate of nanoparticles and Cd(II) in natural water and soil.

Rapid and efficient removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution in a wide range pH by sodalite type sorbents using cellulose superfine fiber as a template agent

Shanshan He,Shengle Kang,Lan Zhang,Xiang Dong,Yan Zhao,Fangfang Li,Qihong Cen

Sodalite is a common zeolite , which is often discarded or ignored due to its small pore size and poor adsorption capacity. In this study, two sodalite type materials , CSF-S and N-CSF-S, were synthesized using cellulose superfine fiber (CSF) as template. Its unique scaly structure not only enhances its adsorption capacity for Cd (II), but also improves its adsorption efficiency. At 298 K and the initial Cd (II) concentration of 100 mg/L, the adsorption equilibrium of CSF-S was achieved within 30 min, which is 98% shorter than that of traditional sodalite. The adsorption of Cd (II) by CSF-S and N-CSF-S is an endothermic process and at 298 K the adsorption capacity could be as high as 260.1 and 284.1 mg/L, respectively, which were 1.9 and 2.0 times of the original sodalite, far higher than the reported similar adsorbents, and competitive to over other types of adsorbents. In addition, with low zero points of charge CSF-S (pH zpc around 1) and N-CSF-S (pH zpc around 3) can effectively remove Cd(II) over a wide pH range, superior to most zeolitic sorbent materials. Therefore, this work proposes a simple and cost-effective synthesis method for the sodalite type sorbents with high Cd(II) adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption rate, and also provides some basis for the study of heavy metal adsorption materials in aqueous systems.

Effects of fulvic acid and montmorillonite colloids at different concentrations on Cd(II) sorption onto nano-hydroxyapatite

Mengmeng Wu,Limei Mo,Erping Bi

Natural colloids can influence the binding mechanisms between nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) and Cd(II). In this study, the effects of organic and inorganic natural colloids on Cd(II) sorption onto nHAP were compared. Different experimental approaches combined with the additivity model and the Extended-Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey–Overbeek model were used to quantify the distribution of Cd(II) in the systems of nHAP and natural colloid, and the interaction energy between particles. The results showed that both fulvic acid (FA) and montmorillonite colloid (MONT) had the promotion and inhibition effects on Cd(II) sorption onto nHAP. Coexistence of FA or MONT could stabilize nHAP particles. FA could adsorb onto nHAP particle surface via carboxylic and phenolic groups, which increased nHAP electronegativity and formed steric resistance effect. Coexistence of MONT mainly increased nHAP electronegativity. These effects prevented the reduction of the specific surface area of nHAP particles and increased the Cd(II) sorption onto nHAP. However, the inhibition effect on Cd(II) sorption was enhanced with increasing concentration of FA or MONT because more soluble FA-Cd or suspended MONT-Cd complexes formed in the system. In nHAP-FA-Cd systems, the Cd(II) sorption onto FA was well predicted but that onto solid phase was underestimated by the additivity model. In nHAP-MONT-Cd systems, Cd(II) sorbed onto mixtures of nHAP and MONT was well described by the additive model. The findings of this study can help to understand the fate of Cd(II) in natural water and soil.

Surface-modified chitin by TEMPO-mediated oxidation and adsorption of Cd(II)

Xubing Sun,Jianfa Zhu,Qiuyue Gu,Yaohui You

To introduce carboxyl groups on the surface of chitin and improve the adsorption performance of Cd(II) from aqueous solution, chitin was modified by 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO) with hypochlorite (NaClO) and sodium bromide (NaBr). Structure characterization demonstrated the carboxyl groups were successfully introduced on the surface of chitin. Batch experiments with various parameters of the content of carboxyl group, pH, contact time, initial concentration of Cd(II) and ionic strength on the adsorption performance were investigated. The surface-modified chitin exhibited enhancement for the Cd(II) adsorption capacity than original chitin. The Cd(II) adsorbed on carboxylated chitin increased rapidly in the first 30 min and reached equilibrium within 120 min. The dynamic data followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model . Both Frendlich and Langmuir isotherm models fitted well to the equilibrium data and the maximum adsorption capacity calculated from Langmuir model was about 207.9 mg/g at 298 K. The adsorption of Cd(II) tended to increase with an increase of pH varying from 2.0 to 5.0, but decrease with an increase of ionic strength. The Cd(II) removal mechanism on carboxylated chitin was mainly through electrostatic interaction to form outer-sphere complexes and ion exchange.

Integration of glutathione disulfide-mediated extraction and capillary electrophoresis for determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in edible oils

Zhanqiu Tang,Xinyi Feng,Hongyuan Tian,Junhua Wang,Weidong Qin

A novel method is introduced for extracting and enriching Cd(II) and Pb(II) from edible oils using glutathione disulfide (GSSG) as both an extractant and a phase-separation agent. The ions in the oils were initially extracted into an aqueous solution containing GSSG. After mixing the solution with acetonitrile at the appropriate volume ratio, a new phase formed, resulting in enrichment of the analytes. The experimental conditions were optimized using response surface methodology with a central composite design. Under optimal conditions, the method offered a combined enrichment factor of >660, with combined extraction efficiencies of 84.31% and 83.35% for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively. Finally, the method was conjugated to capillary electrophoresis to determine Cd(II) and Pb(II) in edible oil samples, with detection limits of 0.45 and 1.24 ppb, respectively. In comparison to traditional approaches, the GSSG-based method demonstrates rapidity, efficiency, and recyclability in extracting heavy metal ions from complex matrices.

Highly efficient detection of Cd(II) ions by a stannum and cerium bimetal-modified laser-induced graphene electrode in water

Yuehua Liu,Qiang Xue,Chunwen Chang,Rong Wang,Qun Wang,Xiaohan Shan

A novel laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrode modified with SnO 2 and CeO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) was created to detect Cd(II) ions via differential pulsed anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and contact angle (CA) analyses were used to characterize the physical and electrochemical properties of the electrode. Both the electrochemical activity and adsorption capacity of the carbon electrode were significantly enhanced. Due to the synergistic effects of SnO 2 and CeO 2 NPs, the modification enhanced the transfer of free electrons on the electrode surface, increasing the electrode sensitivity and accelerating the response speed in the detection process. The use of poly-aminobenzene sulfonic acid (p-ABSA) further increased the conductivity of the electrode. The enhanced adsorption energy and electron transfer properties of the modified electrode were also substantiated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Parameters such as Sn/Ce ratio, deposition time, number of polymerization cycles of p-ABSA and solution pH were optimized to determine the best detection conditions for Cd(II) ions. Under optimal conditions, our sensor showed a broad linear concentration range (0.1 ∼ 160 μg/L) with a low detection limit (0.01 μg/L). This sensor was also successfully applied for detection of Cd(II) ions in groundwater and tap water. Recovery rates ranged from 94 to 111% with a relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 6.06%. This sensor has good anti-interference ability, reproducibility and stability. Our results provide a promising sensor technique for efficient and rapid in situ monitoring of Cd(II) ions in aquatic environments.
