The treatment of acidic wastewaters from chemical industries is a difficult task for biodegradation methods to deal with due to the high toxicity and acidity of the waters. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are common methods used for treating refractory wastewaters, but traditional Fenton and ozonation processes are inefficient at pH values below 2. The combination of H 2 O 2 -with ozone, termed peroxone reaction, is one potential method to solve this problem because of its high efficiency and ease operation. In this study, a composite comprised of N-doped graphene-CeO 2 (NG-Ce) was synthesized as a heterogeneous catalyst in peroxone reaction for the removal of organic pollutants in acidic solutions. X-ray diffraction analysis and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the existence of CeO 2 and graphene in the NG-Ce catalyst. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was performed to analyze the chemical compositions and the valence states of the elements on the surface of the catalysts. Experimental results showed that NG-Ce greatly improved the oxidative efficiency of peroxone reaction and broadened its working pH range. Although the efficiency of NG-Ce/H 2 O 2 /O 3 is decreased as the acidity of solution increases, the degradation of pollutants remained efficient at a pH as low as 0.25. Rich Ce (III) sites on the surface of NG-Ce were suggested to be responsible for the high catalytic activity of NG-Ce in peroxone reaction.

A series of non-enzymatic graphene functionalized biosensors was developed via deposition precipitation method for lactic acid (LA) detection, which were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR). The electrochemical performances of the non-enzymatic biosensors were measured by means of the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) method. The comprehensive analysis of structures shows that Pt, CeO 2 , and GO components interact with each other. During the storing and releasing oxygen, the valence ratio of Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ and the number of oxygen vacancies in CeO 2 change accordingly, which can be conducive to increasing electronic transmission capacity and finally leads to the improvement of electrocatalytic performance. Among them, the Pt/CeO 2 /GO biosensor containing 0.47 at% platinum exhibits an excellent electrochemical detection performance with high sensitivity of 12.3 µA·L/ (mmol·cm 2 ) and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 5.12 μmol/L in a wide linear range from 10 to 900 μmol/L. In addition, the proposed biosensor possesses a promising anti-interference capability, as well as high stability and good reproducibility, which was assessed by testing the cyclic voltammogram in 0.1 mol/L lactic acid one year later. The underlying mechanism was proposed for electrochemical oxidation of LA to carbon dioxide and acetic acid with the synergistic effect among Pt, CeO 2 , and GO. Furthermore, the results of the standard addition method in real samples (human serum and urine samples) reveal that the lactic acid detection of the non-enzymatic Pt/CeO 2 /GO biosensor is accompanied by high reliability. Thus, it will be a valuable biosensor for in vitro detection of lactic acid level in clinical samples.

This study reports a novel adsorbent prepared via a Pickering emulsion-template method for the efficient adsorption of Ce(III) from aqueous solutions. Water-in-oil Pickering emulsions were first stabilized by commercial nano-SiO2, using an aqueous sodium alginate solution as the dispersed phase and kerosene-diluted di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (P204) as the continuous phase. The emulsion droplets were then gelled in a Ca 2 + solution to form stable Pickering emulsion hydrogel beads (PEHG), thereby encapsulating the P204-containing organic phase within a calcium alginate matrix. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the successful encapsulation and the structural integrity of the PEHG. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrated that the adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model, indicative of chemisorption, while the equilibrium data were best described by the Redlich-Peterson isotherm, suggesting a complex adsorption mechanism involving both monolayer and multilayer interactions. Remarkably, the PEHG retained a Ce(III) removal efficiency above 99% over five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, with no observable structural degradation or leakage of the encapsulated phase. This strategy of encapsulating the functional organic phase (P204) within a hydrogel matrix not only enhances its utilization efficiency but also effectively prevents its leakage into the aqueous environment, offering a promising and sustainable approach for rare earth element recovery.

The electrode reactions of the Ce 3+ /Ce couple in molten LiCl–KCl eutectic in the temperature range 723–823 K on solid Mo electrodes were investigated by electrochemical techniques . The mechanism of deposition of metallic cerium has been established. It was found that the cathode reaction is irreversible and proceeds in one stage. The apparent standard Gibbs energy of CeCl 3 formation from the elements was calculated. The values of enthalpy and entropy were equal: ΔH* = − 1000.2 kJ/mol, ΔS* = 166.0 J/mol·K. The conditions of high-purity cerium production have been studied. The chemical structure of cathode deposits as well as the surfaces of the crucible were investigated by XRD , ICP and SEM-EDS methods. It was established that the best results for purification of the cathode product from impurities were achieved in the range 40–60 mA/cm 2 using a two-stage electrolysis. The amounts of the main impurities in the final product were 0.005 wt% Al, 0.0021 wt% Fe, and 0.003 wt% Si. The total purity of metallic cerium after cleaning was increased up to 99.971 wt% if a vitreous carbon crucible was used.

Cerium(III) oxygenated domain has been successfully decorated on the surface of PtCo particles. • The control of *CHO adsorption at Pt–O–Ce(III) interface achieves a non-CO pathway for MOR. • The *HCOOH deprotonation kinetics governed by the coverage of cerium(III) oxidation domain affects the overpotential of MOR. • The Ce-PtCo/C catalyst achieves a mass activity that is 4.8 times as high as that of Pt/C. The poisoning of *CO remains a longstanding challenge for Pt-based catalysts in methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). This study demonstrates that the non-CO pathway is governed by the moderate adsorption of *CHO species and the ability to rapidly oxidize intermediate, both of which can be fulfilled by the Pt-O-Ce(III) interface rather than Pt-O-Ce(IV). In contrast to traditional CeO 2 -supported Pt-based catalyst, this surface-modified Pt-based catalyst has been constructed with abundant Pt-O-Ce(III) interface, providing stable and sufficient active sites to simultaneously optimize the above two factors to catalyze MOR with non-CO pathway. Furthermore, we first reveal that the coverage of this Pt-O-Ce(III) interface is crucial. By rationally regulating the coverage of cerium(III) oxygenated domains, we modulate the thermodynamic adsorption properties of key intermediate species without affecting the subsequent deprotonation kinetics of *HCOOH, thereby achieving the maximum leverage. This novel catalyst steering the non-CO pathway shows promising application potential in actual DMFCs. Download: Download high-res image (137KB) Download: Download full-size image

The introduction of poly(tannic acid) (PTA) and cerium ion [Ce(III)] on the surface of α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) endowed the α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III)/waterborne epoxy composite coating with enhanced corrosion protection and wear resistance performances. The successful preparation of α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) was confirmed through X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. PTA improved the compatibility between α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) and the waterborne epoxy resin due to the presence of organic groups from tannic acid. The wear resistance test indicated that the incorporation of α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) effectively reduced the coefficient of friction and the wear rate. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to analyze the corrosion protection performance of unbroken coatings and the self-healing ability of scratched coatings. The incorporation of α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) improved the protection performace distinctly. In addition, α-ZrP@PTA-Ce(III) endowed the composite coating with dual corrosion inhibition effects, originating from the PTA film, to prevent the penetration of corrosive media and a dense film that came from the Ce(III) cation. The waterborne epoxy system with enhanced corrosion and wear resistance in this paper broadens the application of α-ZrP.

The reduction of NO x emission during the cold start period of diesel vehicles requires special attention in accordance with the emission regulations. In this work, the direct incorporation of cerium and copper in SAPO-18 catalyst with AEI type framework structure (CuCe-SAPO-18) resulting in a substantial enhancement of the performance in the low-temperature NH 3 -SCR reaction (<200 ℃). A small amount of cerium (0.13–0.31 wt%) broadened the reaction temperature range of use and increased the hydrothermal stability of the catalyst considerably. The cerium species was introduced in the ion-exchange sites of Cu-SAPO-18 in the form of Ce 3+ ions even with high loading (3.15 wt%). The Ce 3+ ions were found to affect the distribution of silicon and aluminum atom coordination ( 29 Si NMR, 27 Al MAS NMR) in the AEI-type skeleton structure leading to an increase of both the amount of active Cu 2+ species and the acidity of the CuCe-SAPO-18 catalysts that are beneficial for the NH 3 -SCR reaction.

Graphical Redox flow battery : A Zn−Ce redox flow battery based on choline chloride ethylene glycol deep eutectic solvent was studied. The open-circuit voltage of the battery reaches 2.2 V, and the coulombic efficiency of the battery is stable at about 84 %, which may provide theoretical support for the development of large-scale energy storage system. Compared with conventional aqueous and ionic liquid electrolytes, deep eutectic solvent (DES) are considered as electrolyte for redox flow batteries because they have a wider electrochemical window and relatively low price. In this study, Ce IV /Ce III and Zn II /Zn redox couples are used as the positive and negative active materials, respectively, in an electrolyte consisting of choline chloride ethylene glycol (ethaline). The structure of Ce III in the positive electrolyte is inferred through spectrum detection. Ce IV /Ce III and Zn II /Zn redox couples show a stable potential difference of 2.2 V (vs. Ag) through cyclic voltammetry. The charge and discharge performance of battery was tested at different current densities. In addition, battery performance was evaluated at different temperatures and concentrations of cerium in the electrolyte. Consequently, at a current density of 0.5 mA cm −2 at room temperature and using 1.0 m Ce III , the battery performance reaches the best coulombic efficiency of 84 %.

Excessive fluoride (F − ) in water environment seriously endangers ecological security. This study constructed a series of dual-metal loaded biochar adsorbents (CeFe@BC) by modifying cerium-based materials through Fe doping and coupling with straw-derived biochar substrates. Ce 9 Fe 1 @BC 11 exhibited a remarkable F − adsorption capacity of 110.32 mg/g and had broad operational pH range (q e(pH=2 – 12) ≥ 82.61 mg/g). It showed exceptional selectivity and affinity toward F − even in multicomponent systems. The adsorption process was successfully characterized by pseudo-second-order kinetic (R 2 ≥ 0.999) and Temkin isotherm model (R 2 ≥ 0.952), indicating a chemisorption-dominated mechanism. Mechanistic studies revealed that Fe(II) doping maintained the quantity of Ce(III) active adsorption sites through the Fe(II)/Ce(IV) redox reactions, enabling the inverse transformation from Ce(IV) to Ce(III), rather than participating directly in adsorption. This regeneration mechanism increased the number of adsorption active sites of the material by re-reducing Ce(IV) back to Ce(III) during fluoride adsorption or desorption, thereby significantly enhancing adsorption performance. Unlike other anions that adsorb solely via substitution of terminal hydroxyl groups (T-OH) on metal oxides, fluoride onto CeFe@BC exhibited a dual-site adsorption behavior, involving both T-OH substitution and occupancy of bridging hydroxyl (B-OH) sites. Consequently, the T-OH and B-OH groups coordinated with Ce(III) constitute the primary active adsorption sites. The hierarchical porous structure of the straw biochar exposed abundant adsorption sites and also enhanced electron transfer during redox cycles due to its superior conductivity, enabling regeneration of Ce(III) active sites. This work provided a novel strategy for the synergistic structural-functional modulation of high-performance fluoride adsorbents, advancing the rational design of materials for environmental remediation.

The biodegradable biomass adsorbent (cellulose- g -PSS) was synthesized in LiCl/ N, N -dimethyl acetamide by the free-radical grafting polymerization reaction between sodium styrene sulfonate (SSS) and cellulose. Systematic optimization was conducted on many reaction parameters, including reaction time, monomer dosage, and reaction temperature. The grafting yield of cellulose- g -PSS was 50.16%. The chemical structures, physical, and chemical characteristics of cellulose- g -PSS were characterized by FTIR, SEM, PZC, 1 H NMR, XRD, TGA and XPS. An assessment was conducted to determine the sorption of Ce (III) on cellulose- g -PSS by changing the contact time, adsorbent dosage, pH, initial Ce (III) concentration, and NaCl concentration. The process of adsorption rapidly reached a state of equilibrium within a time frame of 25 min and was well explained using pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity for Ce (III) obtained from the Langmuir isotherm model was 84.80 mg·g −1 . The impact of NaCl concentration on the sorption of Ce (III) and XPS analysis showed that Ce (III) ions were adsorbed onto cellulose- g -PSS through ion-exchange mechanism. As a whole, cellulose- g -PSS exhibited great potential in rare earth wastewater treatment.
