Efficient and low-cost catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation are needed for pollution prevention and environmental remediation. In this work, PMS activation by CoFe layered double hydroxide (CoFe-LDH) was promoted by compositing with biochar (BC). The characterization and catalytic performance of BC, CoFe-LDH, and BC@CoFe-LDH composite (BC-LDH) were investigated. The results indicated that BC could act as a catalyst carrier and electron mediator, which improved the physicochemical properties of CoFe-LDH and promoted the redox cycle of transition metals. The redox-active moieties (RAMs) of BC, especially the reduced functional groups (e.g., phenolic –OH), played an important role in the reduction of Co(III) and Fe(III). Remarkably, benefiting from the synergistic effect between BC and CoFe-LDH, the resulting BC-LDH exhibited excellent catalytic activity and stability for PMS activation. More reactive oxygen species (ROS) were produced in BC-LDH/PMS system. As a result, 100% of dimethyl phthalate (DMP, 10 mg L −1 ) degradation efficiency was achieved within 60 min in BC-LDH/PMS system, while only 62% in CoFe-LDH/PMS system. The intermediates of DMP degradation were identified and the degradation pathways were proposed. Our findings are expected to provide new insights into the rational design and application of BC materials and transition metals/PMS system for environmental remediation.

Coupling the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in seawater is desirable to produce sustainable and green hydrogen due to the reduced energy consumption. However, developing high-performance UOR/HER electrocatalysts in seawater instead of pure water remains a great challenge. Herein, (B,P,Co,Fe)-Ni anchored on Paulownia Wood (PW) is proposed to enhance the overall urea-(sea)water splitting performance. The resulting sample only needs a potential of 1.34 V to deliver a large current density of 100 mA cm−2 for alkaline UOR and features a remarkable durability to maintain 100 mA cm−2 for 100 h. The HER and UOR (HER||UOR) coupled system in alkaline seawater-urea electrolyte for producing H2 demonstrated a more significantly reduced electrolyzer voltage of 1.67 V obtained at 100 mA cm−2 in comparison to that of the HER||OER system (1.98 V). The well-aligned micro-channels and nanopores in wood frameworks not only improve the hydrophilicity and aerophobicity of the whole electrode, which is conducive to the penetration of the electrolyte and release of bubbles, but also shorten the transmission distance of ions and intermediates to accelerate the reaction kinetic process. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Co, Fe, P and B co-doping in Ni effectively adjusts the electronic structure, and the adsorption/desorption behavior of the urea reaction intermediates is regulated by the synergistic effect from multiple components, resulting in an excellent catalytic activity in seawater-urea media. This work promotes a better understanding of the surface electronic structure modulation of nanowood via doping strategy and offers great potential in the design of advanced UOR/HER catalysts for hydrogen production and urea wastewater treatment.

Co-Fe spinel oxides are attractive alternatives to noble metal-based electrocatalysts for water splitting due to their abundant reserves, unique electrochemical redox characteristics and inherent stability. However, their alkaline HER performance under high-current conditions remains limited by inefficient water adsorption/dissociation and suboptimal hydrogen adsorption balance. Herein, a 600-cm 2 amorphous Ce-doped Co 2 FeO 4 cathode with Zn vacancies (Ce, Zn v -Co 2 FeO 4 ) were synthesized by electrodeposition and alkaline etching method. It exhibits exceptional alkaline HER performance with low overpotentials of 47.5 and 247.5 mV at 10 and 1000 mA cm −2 , meanwhile maintaining high stability over 500 h at 1000 mA cm −2 with a potential retention rate of 96.5%. The resulting water electrolyzer with Ce, Zn v -Co 2 FeO 4 as cathode only needs a cell voltage of 1.90 V at 1000 mA cm −2 for overall water splitting. In-situ electrochemical tests and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the synergistic effect of Ce doping and Zn vacancies in Co 2 FeO 4 leads to a 50% reduction in bandgap, thereby enhancing conductivity. It also facilitates spontaneous water adsorption and dissociation, reduces the energy barrier by 46%, and optimizes the balance of hydrogen adsorption/desorption, thereby ultimately enhancing HER activity. This study presents a potential strategy to address the performance limitations of spinel-based HER catalysts.

To address the efficient separation of refractory small-molecule pollutants such as p -nitrophenol (PNP) from industrial wastewater, bimetallic Co-Fe hydroxide nanoparticles were synthesized via a reverse microemulsion method and incorporated into polymer matrices. Initial studies on hybrid membranes with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrices demonstrated enhanced hydrophilicity (contact angle reduction from 77.7° to 64.9°) and antifouling performance (85 % flux recovery rate), but their large pore size (∼70 nm) limited PNP rejection (22.5 %). To overcome this problem, polysulfone (PSF) was selected as an alternative matrix substrate. By systematically adjusting the film-forming time (15–50 min) during phase inversion, tight ultrafiltration membranes with controlled pore structures were fabricated. Prolonged film-forming time (30 min) optimized the solvent-nonsolvent exchange kinetics of the obtained PSF-3 membrane, yielding a dense selective layer with a narrow pore size distribution (3–8 nm) and molecular weight cut-off. This membrane achieved a PNP rejection rate of 71 % compared to 5 % of the PVDF membrane through synergistic "size sieving-hydroxyl adsorption" while maintaining low salt rejection (<15 %) and high flux stability (<15 % flux decline rate over 6 h). Hydrophilicity (49.6° contact angle) and antifouling performance (85 % flux recovery rate after four cycles) were significantly enhanced by uniformly dispersed nanoparticles. This study highlights the critical role of film-forming time in tailoring membrane architecture and performance, providing a novel strategy for efficient small-molecule separation from saline wastewater.

Ammonia (NH 3 ) has been regarded as an attractive energy source for hydrogen production via catalytic decomposition , especially over non-noble metal catalysts . Owing to the decent performance and low cost, nickel (Ni) based catalysts have been widely studied for catalytic decomposition of NH 3 where the decomposition rates, can be further tailored by adding other metals. Herein, we synthesized bimetallic M(M = Co, Fe, Cu)Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts delivering superior catalytic performance at a wide temperature range of 350–750 °C. Co-Ni/Al 2 O 3 demonstrated nearly 100% conversion of NH 3 decomposition to H 2 at 700 °C and the gas hourly space velocity of 30,000 ml g −1 min −1 , which was ~20.85% higher than that of intrinsic Ni/Al 2 O 3 . The structural characterizations indicated that Co could decrease the particle size and enhance the dispersion of active sites. The density functional theory calculations substantiated that the associative decomposition of N to generate N 2 was the rate-determining step of the NH 3 decomposition reactions . NH 3 Temperature Programmed Desorption (TPD) results suggested that the enhanced catalytic performance was predominantly attributed to the Co that decreases the energy barrier for the associative decomposition of N to form N 2 . This study provides new insights in designing diverse catalysts for efficient NH 3 decomposition for controllable H 2 production.

The contamination issue caused by the antibiotics is now a big challenge due to its great potential hazardous to the human beings. Herein, three Co/Fe bimetallic oxides were synthesized for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade norfloxacin. The elemental analysis results confirmed the stoichiometric ratio of Fe/Co was 1.02, 2.03, and 6.65 (CoFe 2 O 4 ·CoO x , CoFe 2 O 4 , Co 0.4 Fe 2.6 O 4 ), respectively. The normalized pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constant ( k app ) of Co 0.4 Fe 2.6 O 4 was 0.18 L/(m 2 ·min), which was over 10 times higher than those of CoFe 2 O 4 ·CoO x (0.010 L/(m 2 ·min)) and CoFe 2 O 4 (0.012 L/(m 2 ·min)). The degradation process would be further accelerated under weak basic condition (pH = 8.5). The enhanced surface hydroxyl groups were found to be the probable reason for the higher efficiency through the XPS analysis. Moreover, the sulfate radical rather than hydroxyl radical dominated the degradation process in the developed Co 0.4 Fe 2.6 O 4 /PMS system. Overall, the magnetic Co/Fe bimetallic oxide catalyst prepared in this study could be served as a high-quality candidate for the catalytic oxidation of refractory organic pollutants.

A nitrogen-doped carbon-confined cobalt–iron bimetallic catalyst (CFNC) was fabricated through high-temperature pyrolysis of a ZIF-67-modified CoFe2O4precursor and employed as a heterogeneous activator for peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-mediated Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation. The physicochemical properties of the as-prepared catalyst were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. These analyses demonstrated that Co–Fe bimetallic species were successfully embedded within the nitrogen-doped carbon framework, forming a confined carbon-supported catalytic structure. Under optimized conditions (CFNC dosage of 20 mg L−1, PMS concentration of 150 mg L−1, and initial pH of 7), the CFNC/PMS system achieved 99.45% RhB removal within 10 min. Moreover, the catalyst retained 78.91% degradation efficiency after five successive cycles, indicating its satisfactory reusability and structural stability. Mechanistic investigations based on radical scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis revealed that PMS activation over CFNC involved the coexistence of radical and non-radical oxidation pathways, in which singlet oxygen (1O2) played a predominant role. The defect-rich nitrogen-doped carbon matrix facilitated PMS adsorption and activation, promoting the selective formation of1O2, while the confined Co–Fe bimetallic sites contributed to efficient electron transfer during the catalytic process. The synergistic coupling between the Co–Fe active centers and conductive carbon framework accounted for the enhanced catalytic performance, suppressed metal leaching, and long-term stability of CFNC. This work presents a promising approach for constructing robust bimetallic carbon-based catalysts and advances the application of PMS-driven advanced oxidation processes for wastewater remediation.

In the realm of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), the escalating cost of cobalt has spurred interest in Co-Fe bimetallic catalysts as substitutes for monometallic Co catalysts. Unfortunately, it is difficult to clarify specific functions and interactions of the two phases, as investigating catalysts in a unified dimension of both metal and support is still a challenge. Herein, we realize precise control over synthesizing nitrogen-doped carbon materials supported bimetallic catalysts containing CoFe alloy and Co + Fe 2 C dual active phases. The catalysts are comprehensively characterized to address the above problem by excluding the influence of metal sizes and support properties. Our findings reveal that compared to metallic Co alone and Co + Fe 2 C dual active phases, the Co-Fe interaction in CoFe alloy with electron transfer from Fe to Co optimizes reactant adsorption behaviors through achieving a larger number of strongly adsorbed CO per active site to increase the density of C* adsorbates and a higher surface CO/H 2 ratio to inhibit the hydrogenation of CH x * intermediates for chain termination, as well as an appropriate ability for CO adsorption/ dissociation. These advantages collectively enhance both CO activation and C-C coupling, and consequently, the CoFe/NC (CoFe alloy) catalyst exhibits the superior catalytic performance in the cobalt space–time yield in C 5+ products (3011.2 g C5+ kg Co −1 h −1 ), which surpasses the Co/NC (monometallic Co) and Co + Fe/NC (Co + Fe 2 C dual active phases) by 2.2 times and 2.4 times, respectively. This study serves as a promising route for the development of efficient and low-cost bimetallic catalysts through the strategic arrangement of multiple active phases for various reactions.

Two kinds of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on Co (II) and Fe (II) as metal ions and trimasic acid (TMA) as organic linker were synthesized. They were used to prepare corresponding MgH 2 -TM MOF (TM = Co, Fe) composites via ball-milling. X-ray diffraction analyses show the formation of Mg 2 Co and α-Fe phases in MgH 2 -TM MOF composites after decomposition. Both of the well dispersed Mg 2 Co and α-Fe nanoparticles exhibit considerable catalytic efficiency in accelerating the sorption kinetics of MgH 2 . The dehydrogenated MgH 2 -Fe MOF composite shows faster hydriding kinetics than the pure MgH 2 and MgH 2 -Co MOF. Meanwhile, the apparent dehydrogenation activation energy ( E d ) of the MgH 2 -Co MOF and MgH 2 -Fe MOF composites are 151.3 ± 9.4 and 142.3 ± 6.5 kJ/mol H 2 , both of which are lower than that of pure MgH 2 (181.4 ± 9.2 kJ/mol H 2 ). The improvement on the sorption kinetics of the MgH 2 -TM MOF powders is mainly attributed to the catalytic effects of nano-sized Mg 2 Co and α-Fe formed on the surface of Mg/MgH 2 particles.

The development of highly efficient electrocatalysts with low cost for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is urgently required for metal-air batteries and fuel cells. In this work, Fe Co/MIL-101(Cr) with various molar ratios of Fe/Co as hybrid catalysts was prepared by a facile and mild impregnation method. MIL-101(Cr) increased the specific surface areas of the hybrid catalysts, thus improving the dispersion of Fe and Co species at their surfaces. The effects of Fe and Co species on ORR activity of the hybrid catalysts were investigated. It is found that the synergistic effects between the well-dispersed Fe and Co species contribute mainly to ORR activity. More specifically, Fe species exert a partial-charge-transfer-activation effect on Co ones, which reduces the charge transfer resistance and thus improves the catalytic activity . As a result, Fe Co/MIL-101(Cr) showed the excellent ORR activity, in which Co 50 Fe 50 /MIL-101(Cr) exhibited the superior ORR activity to the other prepared hybrid catalysts.

The rational design and synthesis of highly efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of critical importance to the large-scale production of hydrogen by water electrolysis. Here, we develop a bimetallic, synergistic, and highly efficient Co–Fe–P electrocatalyst for OER, by selecting a two-dimensional metal–organic framework (MOF) of Co-ZIF-L as the precursor. The Co–Fe–P electrocatalyst features pronounced synergistic effects induced by notable electron transfer from Co to Fe, and a large electrochemical active surface area achieved by organizing the synergistic Co–Fe–P into hierarchical nanosheet arrays with disordered grain boundaries. Such features facilitate the generation of abundant and efficiently exposed Co3+ sites for electrocatalytic OER and thus enable Co–Fe–P to deliver excellent activity (overpotential and Tafel slope as low as 240 mV and 36 mV dec–1, respectively, at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH solution). The Co–Fe–P electrocatalyst also shows great durability by steadily working for up to 24 h. Our work thus provides new insight into the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts based on nanoscale and/or electronic structure engineering.

The development of high-performance anode materials remains a critical challenge in advancing microbial fuel cells (MFCs). In this work, we present a novel strategy employing ternary transition metal Co-Fe-Ni sulfides to overcome the inherent trade-off between catalytic activity and structural stability commonly observed in conventional polymetallic sulfides. Through a facile one-pot solvothermal approach, we synthesized low-crystallinity CoFeNiS x (Co-Fe-Ni) ternary sulfides with precisely tunable Co/Fe/Ni molar ratios. When integrated as an MFC anode, the optimized Co-Fe-Ni sulfide delivered a maximum power density of 3915 mW m −2 using Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) as the biocatalyst, representing an 8.4% enhancement over its binary CoFeS x (Co-Fe) analogue. This performance exceeds that of most previously reported carbon-based anodes. The synthesized transition metal sulfides combine ease of fabrication with outstanding electrocatalytic efficiency. Our findings highlight the underexplored potential of ternary transition metal sulfides in engineering next-generation bioelectrochemical interfaces. Doping Ni into Co-Fe anode forms novel intermetallic linkages, accelerating electrochemical kinetics and reducing charge transfer resistance for maximum MFCs power output.
