Regioselective Construction of Chemically Transformed Phosphide–Metal Nanoheterostructures for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Catalysis

Xing-Zhou Lu,Chao Gu,Qi Zhang,Lei Shi,Shi-Kui Han,Guan-Ping Jin

Engineering nanoheterostructures (NHs) plays a key role in exploring novel or enhanced physicochemical properties of nanocrystals. Despite previously reported synthetic methodologies, selective synthesis of NHs to achieve the anticipated composition and interface is still challenging. Herein, we presented a colloidal strategy for the regioselective construction of typical Ag–Co2P NHs with precisely controlled location of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) on unique chemically transformed Co2P nanorods (NRs) by simply changing the ratio of different surfactants. As a proof-of-concept study, the constructed heterointerface-dependent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysis was demonstrated. The multiple Ag NP-tipped Co2P NRs exhibited the best HER performance, due to their more exposed active sites and the synergistic effect at the interfaces. Our results open up new avenues in rational design and fabrication of NHs with delicate control over the spatial distribution and interfaces between different components.

Ru nanocluster-regulated Co/Co2P heterointerfaces for accelerating alkaline hydrogen evolution

Siyu Peng,Hongliang Wu,Xiao Xu,Chenyan Hou,Shaojia Qi,Changhao Wu,Xiaobo Lai,Kun Peng,Xiaohua Li,Jizhao Zou

A Ru nanocluster-coupled Co/Co 2 P heterostructure was rationally designed. • Ru nanoclusters regulate interfacial electrons and catalytic active centers. • Electronic modulation optimizes H* adsorption and accelerates water dissociation. • Hierarchical porous carbon improves mass transport and active-site accessibility. • The catalyst delivers excellent HER activity and overall water splitting. Achieving sustainable hydrogen production via water electrolysis relies heavily on the availability of efficient, stable, and economically viable electrocatalytic systems. Herein, we report a Ru nanocluster-regulated Co/Co 2 P heterostructure catalyst confined within a nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon framework via an ion-exchange-assisted chemical vapor deposition strategy. The synergistic interaction among Ru nanoclusters and Co/Co 2 P heterointerfaces induces interfacial charge redistribution and modulates the electronic structure of the catalytic active sites, thereby facilitating the HER process. Combined experimental analyses and density functional theory calculations reveal that Ru nanoclusters effectively regulate hydrogen adsorption behavior, accelerate water dissociation kinetics, and reduce the Gibbs free Gibbs free-energy change of alkaline HER. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of heterointerface engineering, nanocluster regulation, and hierarchical porous architecture, the resultant optimized catalyst delivers a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at an ultralow overpotential as low as 40 mV, coupled with remarkable long-term cycling stability. Moreover, the Co-Co 2 P@Ru@NC||RuO 2 electrolyzer delivers a low cell voltage of 1.52 V at 10 mA cm −2 , demonstrating its potential for efficient overall water splitting. This work provides a rational strategy for constructing advanced electrocatalysts through synergistic electronic modulation and interface engineering toward sustainable hydrogen production.

Electrochemical pseudocapacitance of Co/Co2P/CoP as electrode material for supercapacitor application

Shao-Bo Guo,Wei-Bin Zhang,Ze-Qin Yang,Shan-Shan Chai,Xian-Li Zhang,Xia Zhou,Xiong-Wei Han,Jianping Long

It has become a consensus to study transition metal phosphides with abundant earth reserves and good electrochemical properties as electrode materials for supercapacitors . Among them, cobalt phosphide is particularly attractive because of its good electrical conductivity and theoretical specific capacity. Therefore, cobalt phosphide composites were prepared by hydrothermal reaction and phosphating reaction in this paper. Due to the synergistic effect of different components and the interfacial effect between the components, the ion transport and charge transfer kinetics of the prepared Co/Co 2 P/CoP electrode are both improved, which exhibits excellent electrochemical performance. At the current density of 1 A g −1 , the prepared Co/Co 2 P/CoP electrode material has a specific capacitance of 193.3 mA h g −1 , after 6000 cycles of charge and discharge at the current density of 2 A g −1 , the specific capacitance maintains at 80 %. An asymmetric supercapacitor was assembled with the prepared material as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode, which can provide an energy density of 37.87 W h kg −1 at a power density of 799.6 W kg −1 . At the current density of 1 A g −1 , the assembled supercapacitor can maintain 80 % of the initial specific capacitance after 5000 cycles. This provides ideas for future research on this type of energy storage materials .

Dual electrocatalytic heterostructures for efficient immobilization and conversion of polysulfides in Li–S batteries

Menghua Yang,Xuewei Wang,Jinfeng Wu,Yue Tian,Xingyu Huang,Ping Liu,Xianyang Li,Xinru Li,Xiaoyan Liu,Hexing Li

Lithium sulfur (Li–S) batteries have been investigated as ideal candidates for future high-density energy storage systems with the advantages of abundant reserves, high energy density and competitive cost. The key issues are the severe shuttling of polysulfides and sluggish redox kinetics. Herein, we report a novel metal–organic framework-derived Co2P–ZnS/ZnS–C nanocomposite constructed from inner Co2P–ZnS and outer ZnS–C heterostructures. Both the experimental results and theoretical calculations demonstrated that these dual electrocatalytic heterostructures enabled strong affinity with polysulfides and facilitated the reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the hollow carbon polyhedron provided fast electron/ion transfer channels and effectively buffered volume expansion during cycling. As anticipated, a high initial capacity of 1503 mA h g−1 was achieved at 0.2C with Co–Zn/Zn–C/S as a cathode, together with excellent stability after 500 cycles at 1C. Even a high reversible capacity of 540 mA h g−1 was achieved at 1C after 200 cycles under an elevated sulfur loading of 3.65 mg cm−2. This work presents a new strategy for designing dual electrocatalytic hosts for immobilization and conversion of polysulfides, which may offer more opportunities as cathodes in stable Li–S batteries with high energy density.

Co2P-NiMoN/NF Heterostructure Nanorod Arrays as Efficient Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Urea Electrolysis

Zixuan Zhang,Dongxing Tan,Jing Wang,Dan Zhang,Qingkun Kong,Weiqing Kong,Xianfang Yin,Yuan-Yuan Feng

Electrolysis of water represents an effective method for the generation of high-purity hydrogen. Nevertheless, the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) exhibits slow kinetics, which leads to a high electrolytic potential and induces excessive energy consumption. In this work, nickel foam-supported 3D phosphide/bimetal nitride (Co2P-NiMoN/NF) nanorod array catalyst is prepared by calcination of NiMoO4, followed by phosphatization of Co(OH)2. The heterostructure catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity for cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER: η100 = 98 mV, η1000 = 297 mV) and anodic OER (η100 = 277 mV, η1000 = 382 mV) of water electrolysis in alkaline electrolyte, indicating its feasibility as a bifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting (OWS). Additionally, at a current density of 100 mA cm–2, the associated oxidation potential is decreased by roughly 160 mV when the anodic OER is replaced with the urea oxidation process (UOR), which has a far lower thermodynamic equilibrium potential. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the heterointerface between Co2P and NiMoN enriches the density of electronic states near the Fermi level, thereby enhancing electron transfer and promoting charge redistribution. This modulation precisely tunes the adsorption strengths of reactants during the reaction process, ultimately boosting the electrocatalytic performance. A current density of 100 mA cm–2 can be attained at a cell voltage of 1.51 V when Co2P-NiMoN/NF is used as the anode and cathode in the urea electrolysis cell. Notably, this cell potential is significantly lower compared to that of the water electrolysis cell (1.65 V), as well as the previously published values. The findings demonstrate that the Co2P-NiMoN/NF heterostructure can be used as a bifunctional catalyst for water and urea electrolysis and demonstrate an efficient strategy for the energy-efficient production of hydrogen through substituting UOR for OER at the anode of water electrolysis.

Morphological engineering of monodispersed Co2P nanocrystals for efficient alkaline water and seawater splitting

Xiuwen Wang,Tingting Su,Zhaohui Lu,Lan Yu,Ning Sha,Chunmei Lv,Ying Xie,Ke Ye

Developing feasible synthetic strategies for preparing advanced nanomaterials with narrow size distributions and well-defined structures represents a cutting-edge field in alkaline water and seawater electrolysis. Herein, the monodispersed Co 2 P nanocrystals with tunable morphologies, namely one-dimensional nanorods (Co 2 P-R), nanoparticles (Co 2 P-P), and nanospheres (Co 2 P-S), were controllably synthesized by using a Schlenk system through optimizing the reactivity of cobalt- and phosphorus-based sources. The resulting Co 2 P-R exhibited superior electrocatalytic activity for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH, simulated seawater, and natural seawater. Impressively, the reconstructed active species effectively avoid the chlorine evolution on Co 2 P-R surface and facilitate OER process. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that Co 2 P-R exhibited an optimal d-band center (ε d ) and a lower energy barrier for the rate-determining steps in both HER and OER processes in comparison with Co 2 P-P and Co 2 P-S. Additionally, the Co 2 P-R showed a more favorable water adsorption energy (E H2O ) over Cl − adsorption energy (E Cl− ), which contributes to its enhanced seawater electrolysis performance. The Co 2 P-R||Co 2 P-R electrolyzer achieves a low voltage of 1.70, 1.76, and 1.76 V at 100 mA cm −2 in alkaline freshwater, simulated seawater, and natural seawater, respectively, and demonstrates stable operation for 200 h at 100 mA cm −2 .

Efficient pH-universal degradation of antibiotic tetracycline via Co2P decorated Neosinocalamus affinis biochar

Zhuang He,Yingnan He,Fengqin Chang,Zaixing Li,Jianrui Niu,Meng Li,Shusheng Zhang,Xiaohua Li,Rongguang Shi,Guangzhi Hu

Considering the complexity of traditional cobalt phosphide (Co 2 P) loaded biochar synthesis research on a simple and efficient synthesis method has practical significance. In this study, after phosphoric acid activation, Neosinocalamus affinis biochar (NAB) and nanoplate Co 3 O 4 quickly formed a Co 2 P-NAB composite material with high Co 2 P crystallinity and was uniformly dispersed on the surface of NAB in a microwave reactor. Co 2 P-NAB has an excellent catalytic degradation effect in the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade tetracycline (TC). The optimal TC degradation efficiency was achieved with the addition of 50 mg L −1 TC concentration, 0.2 g L −1 catalysts, 0.406 mM PMS and pH = 6.02. In addition, according to the pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant calculation, the composite of Co 2 P-NAB and PMS the synergy efficiency is 81.55 %. Compared with Co 2 P-NAB (10.83 %) and PMS (7.62 %) alone, the Co 2 P-NAB/PMS system has a significant promotion effect on the degradation of TC molecules. Additionally, the Co 2 P-NAB/PMS system had a TC mineralization rate of 68 % in 30 min. Furthermore, after a series of characterization, detection and analysis, and influencing factor experiments, we proposed a potential mechanism for the Co 2 P–NAB/PMS reaction system to degrade TC and found that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) plays an essential role in the non-radical degradation process. Finally, according to the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) detection of TC degradation intermediates, a possible degradation route was proposed. Therefore, this work uses microwave technology to present a novel and simple synthesis method for transition metal phosphides, which provides potential application value for the treatment of actual wastewater with heterogeneous catalysts.

A rationally designed bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst based on Co2P nanoparticles for Zn–air batteries

Qing Shi,Yapeng Zheng,Weijun Li,Bin Tang,Lin Qin,Weiyou Yang,Qiao Liu

Developing highly cost-effective bifunctional oxygen electrode catalysts for metal–air batteries is urgent but remains challenging. In this paper, we report a highly-efficient Co2P-based bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst that comprises Co2P and N,P co-doped carbon nanoparticles anchored within three-dimensional carbon nanofiber networks (denoted as Co2P-NPC/CF) through a toxic-free, one-pot synthesis involving in situ growth of Co3(PO4)2–polydopamine/bacterial cellulose (BC) that can be transformed into Co2P-NPC/CF by a subsequent pyrolysis process. This catalyst exhibits a positive half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.85 V for the oxygen reduction reaction, and a low operating potential of 1.60 V at 10 mA cm−2 (Ej10) for the oxygen evolution reaction, superior to the benchmark Pt/C (0.82 V) and RuO2 (1.62 V) catalysts, respectively. The reversible oxygen electrode index (ΔE = Ej10 − E1/2) is just 0.75 V for Co2P-NPC/CF, surpassing those for the state-of-the-art noble-metal catalysts (ΔE = 0.80 V for Pt/C–RuO2) and most Co-based bifunctional catalysts ever reported. Furthermore, Co2P-NPC/CF-based primary Zn–air batteries can discharge at 10 mA cm−2 for 110 h with a small voltage loss of 55 mV, and the maximum power density reaches 160 mW cm−2; Co2P-NPC/CF-based rechargeable Zn–air batteries show a negligible voltage gap change after 160 charge–discharge cycles, much better than Pt/C-based batteries. The enhanced bicatalytic performance of this Co2P-based catalyst can be ascribed to the structural integration of Co2P NPs with CF networks and N,P co-doped carbon in a synergistic manner, where porous CF networks with a large specific surface area allow for uniform distribution and full exposure of dual active sites, and the simultaneous doping of P and N atoms in carbon could induce an enhanced coupling of Co2P NPs with N,P-codoped carbon. This work not only provides an easy and safe way to prepare excellent Co2P-based bifunctional catalysts for Zn–air batteries, but also demonstrates a viable structural integration strategy to offer reference for the design of multifunctional catalysts.

Mn-Doped Cactus-Shaped Co2P Was Used as an Efficient Overall Water Decomposition Electrocatalyst

Jing Peng,Yin Huang,Haoran Lei,Xiuhua Wang

We successfully engineered a cactus-like Co 2 P nanocatalyst for overall water splitting by incorporating manganese to modulate its electronic structure. Incorporating Mn into Co 2 P enhances both HER and OER through optimized surface adsorption, leading to faster kinetics and improved catalytic efficiency. The Mn-Co 2 P catalyst delivers outstanding alkaline HER performance, requiring just 51 mV to drive 10 mA cm −2 while showing no degradation during a 48-h stability test. Notably, the OER overpotential is just 283 mV at 50 mA cm −2 with remarkable durability. Remarkably, when utilized as dual-function electrodes in a complete water electrolysis system, the Mn-Co 2 P-based system delivers 10 mA cm −2 at a low cell voltage of 1.523 V, along with brilliant long-term stability.

CoP/Co2P@NC/MWCNTs as oxygen catalysts in alkaline seawater-based zinc-air batteries

Xin Cui,Xueying Li,Mengjiang Hu,Wenxiu Teng,Lin Zong,Yuanyuan Dan,Lizhuang Chen

Due to the serious problems of energy shortage and environmental pollution, seawater-based zinc-air (S-ZABs) batteries with low cost and reduced freshwater competition are considered to be a highly promising application for energy storage and energy conversion devices. However, the oxygen catalysts used in S-ZABs often suffer from Cl − poisoning and serious side reactions (ClER). Therefore, we synthesized multi-walled carbon nanotubes-supported nitrogen-doped carbon-coated CoP/Co 2 P nanoparticles (CoP/Co 2 P@NC/MWCNTs). The contents of P can be modulated by the ratio of Co(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O and NaH 2 PO 2 . The optimized CoP/Co 2 P-6@NC/MWCNTs with 1.4 % P, 20.88 % Pyridine-N exhibited excellent ORR activity (E 1/2  = 0.88 V, E onset  = 0.98 V, and J L  = 5.04 mA cm −2 ) in O 2 -saturated 0.1 mol L −1 KOH + 0.5 mol L −1 NaCl. CoP/Co 2 P-6@NC/MWCNTs exhibited excellent OER activity (E overpotential  = 299 mV at 10 mA cm −2 with the Tafel slope of 80.99 mV dec −1 ). The specific capacity of the Zn || CoP/Co 2 P-6@NC/MWCNTs seawater-based cell was as high as 805.26 mAh g −1 at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . In addition, the Zn || CoP/Co 2 P-6@NC/MWCNTs seawater-based cell had an ultra-long cycling stability of more than 500 h, which demonstrated that CoP/Co 2 P-6@NC/MWCNTs has great potential to be as a seawater-based zinc-air cathode. This study opens a new way to design and synthesize non-precious metal OER/ORR bifunctional electrocatalysts in seawater electrolytes.

Controllable synthesis of Co2P nanorods as high-efficiency bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

Meijing Song,Yu He,Mengmeng Zhang,Xuerong Zheng,Yang Wang,Jinfeng Zhang,Xiaopeng Han,Cheng Zhong,Wenbin Hu,Yida Deng

One-dimensional transition metal phosphides with large specific surface areas and efficient conductivity have the great potential in both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER and OER) as bifunctional catalysts , which are at the heart of water splitting. Herein, we firstly report the controllable synthesis of Co 2 P nanorods through a substrate- and template-free facile phosphating reaction. Electrochemical test results reveal that the synthesized Co 2 P nanorods exhibit superior bifunctional activity with overpotentials of 87 mV for HER and 310 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 , respectively, relative to Co 2 P/CoP branched nanostructure , CoP nanoparticles and commercial Co 2 P in alkaline media . In addition, the bifunctional Co 2 P nanorods catalysts enable overall water splitting with a cell voltage of 1.65 V to achieve 10 mA cm −2 and stabilized potentials at different current densities testing over 24 h. Further analysis demonstrate that the remarkably bifunctional activity is contributed to high charge transfer efficiency, large contact area with electrolyte and a large number of exposed active sites provided by the rod-like nanostructure. This work should shed light on an industrialized pathway for the future design of phosphide catalysts to apply to overall water splitting even other emerging energy devices.

Co2P/CoP hybrid as a reversible electrocatalyst for hydrogen oxidation/evolution reactions in alkaline medium

Guoju Huang,Wanli Liang,Yinlong Wu,Jiawang Li,Yan Qi Jin,Hongbin Zeng,Hao Zhang,Fangyan Xie,Jian Chen,Nan Wang,Yanshuo Jin,Hui Meng

Due to the rapid development of alkaline polymer electrolyte fuel cells and water splitting, it is becoming increasingly urgent to develop non-precious metal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline medium. Herein, Co 2 P/CoP hybrid is synthesized from cobalt carbonate hydroxide (CoCH) precursor, and further evaluated for the electrocatalytic HOR and HER in alkaline electrolytes. Specifically, benefiting from the reasonable hybrid structure that integrate suitable hydrogen adsorption energy of CoP and excellent conductivity of Co 2 P, Co 2 P/CoP hybrid exhibits excellent catalytic activities. The Co 2 P/CoP@NF hybrid has impressive HER activity, with a current density of −10 mA cm −2 at the overpotentials of −61 mV and the Tafel slope of 55.1 mV dec −1 , which can compete with recently reported transition metal phosphides and cobalt-based catalysts. In addition, the exchange current density of Co 2 P/CoP@NF hybrid is ~ 0.82 mA cm −2 for HOR, which is close to commercial Pt/C catalyst (~1.14 mA cm −2 ).
