Highly-interspersed biomass-derived carbon quantum dots onto floral CoAl-LDH for significantly enhanced CO2 photoreduction into CO and CH4

Jia Li,Ge Gao,Yang Liu,Yang Li,Zhi Liu

Stimulating photocatalytic activity of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been being as a research hotspot in photocatalysis . Quantum dots doping is a well acknowledged strategy to utilize their photoelectric superiorities to overcome the intrinsic defects of pristine LDHs. In this work, waste biomass-derived carbon quantum dots (B-CQDs)-interspersed CoAl-LDH photocatalysts (B/CALs) are successfully prepared by means of a simple hydrothermal method from green and renewable points of view. The introduction of B-CQDs significantly broadens the light absorption range and capacity of CoAl-LDH. As the terminal electron acceptor , the highly-dispersed B-CQDs can effectively prolong the lifetime of photogenerated charge carriers and promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. No assistance from any sacrificial agent , the optimal sample of B/CAL-2 exhibits significantly enhanced photoreduction activity of CO 2 -to-CO and CH 4 , 6.4- and 7.5-fold higher than those of the pristine CoAl-LDH, respectively, and also surpassing many reported high-level LDHs counterparts. Such an uncomplicated case guides a green and feasible route to modify semiconductor materials with renewable biomass, which is expected to be applied to others for enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Nanosheet Array-Like Palladium-Catalysts Pdx/rGO@CoAl-LDH via Lattice Atomic-Confined in Situ Reduction for Highly Efficient Heck Coupling Reaction

Yanna Wang,Liguang Dou,Hui Zhang

A series of novel nanosheet array-like catalysts Pdx/rGO@CoAl-LDH (x = 0.0098–1.9, refers to Pd loading in wt % on ICP, rGO: reduced graphene oxide, LDH: layered double hydroxide) were first prepared via a simple and green lattice atomic-confined in situ reduction of oxidative Pd precursors by the evenly atomic-dispersed reductive Co2+ sites on LDH layers of a nanohybrid rGO@CoAl-LDH with hexagonal LDH nanoplates (∼73 × 7 nm) interdigitated vertical to the surfaces of rGO layer in both sides, fabricated through a simple citric acid-assisted aqueous-phase coprecipitation method. The as-obtained Pd catalysts possess clean Pd nanoclusters (NCs) with tunable sizes in 1.3–1.8 nm on varied Pd loadings. All the Pdx/rGO@CoAl-LDH catalysts show excellent activities for the Heck reaction, and the Pd0.0098/rGO@CoAl-LDH with the ultrafine Pd NCs of 1.3 ± 0.2 nm yields a maximum turnover frequency of 160 000 h–1 over a heterogeneous catalyst so far. The excellent activities can be attributed to the ultrasmall Pd NCs with high dispersion and clean Pd surfaces, increased electron transfer capacity and surface area, and remarkable Pd–CoAl-LDH—rGO three-phase synergistic effect of the present unique nanosheet array-like Pd NCs catalysts. Moreover, the catalyst Pd0.33/rGO@CoAl-LDH shows a broad range of substrate applicability and can be reused more than five runs without obvious loss of activity, giving the present catalysts long-term stability. These findings make the rGO@CoAl-LDH hybrid prepared by a facile and scalable synthesis route a universal green platform to support other noble or nonprecious metal NCs via lattice atomic-confined in situ reduction strategy to construct more desired heterogeneous catalysts.

A novel design for CoAl-LDH double hydroxides layers vertically decorating three-dimensional carbon foam for strengthening electromagnetic wave attenuation and flame retardancy

Ze Meng,Min Chen,Nan Wang,Bo Li,Lin Ma,Yanzhen Ji,Shiyu Song,Jiangao Liu,Daheng Liu,Jing Wang,Sensen Geng,Shouyu Ren,Xiaohui Liang,Song Ma

The high-performance electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials usually rely on carbon-based materials to enhance dielectric loss, but its easily burning character at high temperatures severely limits its application in high-temperature and heat accumulation environments. How to simultaneously realize excellent EMW absorption and flame retardant in carbon-based materials remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we proposed a special composite design strategy in-situ decorating the insulating layered double hydroxide (CoAl-LDH) nanosheets with flame retardancy function on carbon foam skeleton via a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The optimal minimum reflection loss of −51.8 dB and an exceptionally broaden effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) 5.2 GHz was achieved under absorber thickness 1.8 mm and 20% filling ratio. Taking current composite as pyramidal structure, the full-band absorption from 2 to 40 GHz not only was achieved, but also the anti-combustion effect in 220°C was retained. With insulated CoAl-LDH nanosheets vertically decorating on carbon skeleton, the restriction of long-range electron in carbon skeleton was demonstrated to enhance a dominant dielectric loss, which support the excellent EMW absorption. Together with interlayer water molecules and carbonate ions, the release of H 2 O and CO 2 from the hydroxides in the CoAl-LDH layers and the isolation heat transfer and oxygen from physical barrier was confirmed to contribute the flame-retardant properties. This work not only provides a novel strategy for designing high-performance EMW absorbers with integrated flame-retardant capabilities under about 220°C, but also open up a new perspective in utilizing localized carriers interaction to complete dielectric and combustion reaction regulation. Photocatalytic PAN Nanofibrous Membrane through Anchoring a Nanoflower-Branched CoAl-LDH@PANI Heterojunction for Organic Hazards Degradation and Oil-Containing Emulsified Wastewater Separation

Fei Zhu,Yingqing Zhan,Ximin Chen,Yiwen Chen,Yajie Lei,Hongshan Jia,Yinlong Li,Xinyue Duan

The synergistic treatment of oily wastewater containing organic hazards and emulsified oils remains a big challenge for membrane separation technology. Herein, the photocatalytic membrane, which combined the physical barrier and catalytic oxidation-driven degradation functionality, was fabricated via anchoring a nanoflower-branched CoAl-LDH@PANI Z-scheme heterojunction onto a porous polyacrylonitrile mat and using tannic acid as an adhesive. The assembly of such a Z-scheme heterojunction offered the superior photocatalytic degradation performance of soluble dyes and tetracycline (up to 94.3%) to the membrane with the improved photocatalytic activity of 2.33 times compared with the CoAl-LDH@pPAN membrane. Quenching experiments suggested that the •O2– was the most reactive oxygen species in the catalytic reaction system of the composite membrane. The greatly enhanced photocatalytic activity was attributed to the effective inhibition of photogenerated hole–electron combination using PANI as a carrier, with charge transferring from LDH to PANI. The possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism was proposed based on VB-XPS, electron spin resonance spectroscopy, and DRS technologies, which was confirmed by density functional theory calculation. Meanwhile, benefiting from the superhydrophilic/oleophobic feature and low oil adhesion, the membrane exhibited high permeability for isooctane emulsion (3990.39 L·m–2·h–1), high structure stability, and satisfactory cycling performance. This work provided a strategy to develop superwetting and photocatalytic composite membranes for treating complex multicomponent pollutants in the chemical industry.
