Due to the modification of anions, an electron redistribution occurs at the metal ions can affect the electronic structure, and induce excellent specific capacity. Herein, we report an effective and low time-consuming method by in-situ wet chemical reduction at room temperature to construct S-modified Cu/Cu 2 O negative electrode material. Moreover, the sulfur can occupy partial O sites in Cu 2 O to play a crucial role in the electronic structure of the material, demonstrated by DFT calculation, XRD, XPS and XAS measurements. The prepared S-Cu/Cu 2 O samples exhibit excellent electrochemical performance with high specific capacity of 669 mAh·g −1 at 1 A·g −1 , even 450 mAh·g −1 at 10 A·g −1 . When the materials are composed as pseudo capacity-type cathode//battery-like anode (MnO 2 //S-Cu/Cu 2 O), and (+) battery-type//battery-type (-) (Ni-Cu hydroxide/Cu(OH) 2 /CF//S-Cu/Cu 2 O) hybrid capacitors, they show the energy density of 47.7 and 147.3 Wh·kg −1 at the power density of 636.2 and 800 kW·kg −1 , respectively. Otherwise, the flexible MnO 2 //S-Cu/Cu 2 O hybrid capacitor is assembled, which also exhibits good performance at different bending conditions. This work can provide a simple method to prepare the electrode materials via in situ anion modification for high-energy density battery-like energy storage systems.

Element doping is an effective strategy to enhance the selectivity of electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction. In this work, a dendritic core-shell In-doped Cu@Cu 2 O catalyst is prepared by co-electrodeposition method on carbon fiber paper for selective electroreduction of CO 2 to CO. Faradaic efficiency of producing CO over this dendritic In-doped Cu@Cu 2 O reaches 87.6 ± 2.2% with total current density of 11.1 ± 0.85 mA cm −2 at −0.8 V vs RHE, which outperforms most of the reported Cu-based electrocatalysts. The excellent performance is mainly derived from charge re-distribution and the enhanced intrinsic activity due to the formation of In-doped Cu 2 O layer. Meanwhile, the Cu + /Cu 0 can be adjusted by tailoring the doped-In content. The relatively high ECSA and small charge transfer resistance are also conducive to improve the selectivity and activity. The oxyphilic In metal incorporated into the copper lattice can well stabilize the intermediate *COOH through enhancing interaction with O-ends of *COOH. This work provides a facile approach and a deep insight on design and synthesis of high efficiency hybrid electrocatalysts.

In this paper, we have developed a fast and low-cost label-free electrochemical immunosensor for detection of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG). The proposed sensor is based on a glassy carbon electrode modified with Cu@Cu 2 O nanoparticles anchored B, N co-doped porous carbon (BNPC) composite. The copper-derived nanoparticles with multiple valence states undergo dramatic changes in surface areas, conductivity, and actives sites due to their combination with BNPC, resulting in enhanced electrochemical performance. In the amperometric immunoassay, the immune complex of antigen and antibody inhibits the transfer of electrons on the electrode interface, causing a change in the current. Thus the quantitative detection of LGG is achieved. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was performed at a LGG concentration of 10 2 to 10 8 colony-forming units CFU mL −1 . The immunosensor showed a good linear relationship between the decrease in peak current and the concentration of LGG ( R 2 = 0.9934), with a short detection time and a detection limit of 12 CFU mL −1 . In short, we have developed a highly sensitive electrochemical immunosensor for the specific detection of LGG using the current-mode, label-free immunoassay method evaluated in this study, providing a reliable mean for quantifying probiotics.

Cu-MOF-derived Cu/Cu 2 O-embedded carbon integrated with MWCNTs-COOH. • Synergistic hetero-interface with Cu⁺ Lewis acid sites and conductive network. • Sensitive L -DOPA detection with 0.007 μM LOD and broad linear range. • Effective anti-interference against uric acid in biological matrices. • Validated applicability in human serum and urine samples (94.8–105.2%). Reliable monitoring of levodopa ( L -DOPA) is clinically crucial for optimizing Parkinson’s disease therapy and minimizing side effects. Herein, a sensitive electrochemical sensor was constructed using a composite of Cu-MOF-derived Cu/Cu 2 O-embedded carbon integrated with carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (C-Cu-MOF/MWCNTs-COOH). The key innovation of this work lies in designing a synergistic hetero-interface where carbonization yields Cu and Cu 2 O species within a carbon framework, while the incorporated MWCNTs-COOH establish a conductive network that facilitates electron transfer. The enhanced electrochemical response arises from the synergistic interaction between the mixed-valence copper species and the carbon framework. Specifically, Cu + serves as Lewis acid sites for L -DOPA enrichment while the carbon scaffold together with Cu 0 promotes interfacial electron transfer. Kinetic analysis reveals an adsorption-controlled process involving two-electron and two-proton transfer. Under optimized conditions, the sensor delivers a broad linear response (0.01–15 μM) with a low detection limit of 0.007 μM, alongside satisfactory repeatability, reproducibility, and long-term stability (94.3% retention after 21 days). Notably, uric acid (UA), a major coexisting interferent in physiological fluids with overlapping oxidation potential, is well resolved from L -DOPA at the modified electrode, causing negligible interference in coexistent measurements. Practical applicability is further validated by recoveries of 94.8–105.2% in human serum and urine samples. These results demonstrate that C-Cu-MOF/MWCNTs-COOH is a highly effective sensing platform for L -DOPA, combining excellent sensitivity, selectivity, and practical utility for clinical monitoring.

The simultaneous detection of acetaminophen (PA) and its toxic metabolite of 4-aminophenol (4-AP) is crucial for ensuring drug safety and controlling environmental risks. Here, a copper-based porous carbon nanocomposite (Cu/Cu 2 O@PC) derived from core-shell metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high conductivity, abundant catalytic sites and a stable porous structure were designed and synthesized through employing a controlled pyrolysis of a precursor with Cu 2 O as the core and CuZn-BTC as the shell, which served as the foundation for constructing a highly sensitive and selective electrochemical sensing platform for simultaneous determination of PA and 4-AP. The resulting sensor exhibited excellent analytical performance under optimized conditions, including wider linear ranges (0.10–300.00 μM for PA and 0.10–400.00 μM for 4-AP), lower detection limits (0.027 μM for PA and 0.015 μM for 4-AP), as well as good reproducibility and stability. And, satisfactory recovery were achieved for real samples analysis. This work not only provides an efficient and reliable analytical method for monitoring phenolic pollutants but also offers a new strategy for designing high-performance electrochemical sensing materials based on MOF-derived architectures.

Electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia (NO 3 RR)
is a sustainable strategy that integrates environmental remediation
with ammonia resource recovery. Current NO 3 RR studies mainly
focus on high nitrate concentrations under idealized electrolyte conditions
to achieve high ammonia yields. Under realistic water conditions,
low NO 3 – concentrations, neutral media,
and competing side reactions often result in sluggish kinetics, low
removal efficiency, and undesirable nitrite accumulation. Herein,
we report a facile strategy for constructing an interface-tunable Cu/Cu 2 O@CoO-P heterojunction
through one-step regulation of the growth of CoO nanoneedles on copper
mesh by tuning the phosphorus concentration. Phosphorus incorporation
effectively modulates the electronic structure of the Co active sites
and tunes the heterojunction interface, thereby optimizing the generation
of adsorbed hydrogen (*H) and suppressing the hydrogen evolution reaction.
This enables a well-matched two-step tandem pathway, where Cu/Cu 2 O facilitates the conversion of NO 3 – to NO 2 – , and the P-modulated CoO sites
rapidly hydrogenate NO 2 – to NH 4 + , thus effectively preventing excessive NO 2 – accumulation. The optimized Cu/Cu 2 O@CoO-P achieves a high Faradaic efficiency
(FE) of 97.11% for NH 4 + - N and an ammonia yield
of 36.09 mg h –1 cm –2 at 10 mA
cm –2 under neutral-pH conditions, along with excellent
stability, retaining 98.45% of its performance after 20 cycles. Notably,
the catalyst demonstrates exceptional practical applicability for
ammonia recovery from real aquaculture tailwater in both batch mode
and continuous-flow mode. This work offers new insights into the design
of tunable heterojunction interfaces to achieve a well-matched and
efficient tandem catalytic process, enabling effective remediation
of low-concentration nitrate contamination and high ammonia recovery
in real wastewater environments.

Achieving high activity, superior selectivity, and durable performance remains challenging for pristine MOFs in heterogeneous hydrogenation catalysis. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon-wrapped Cu@Cu 2 O/NC heterogeneous catalysts enriched with Cu 0 –Cu + interfacial sites were readily derived by calcining Cu-MOF under an air atmosphere. Comprehensive characterization was conducted to examine synthesis-induced variations in bulk crystallinity, surface chemistry, and catalytic activity for Cu-MOF-250, Cu-MOF-350, and Cu-MOF-450. Compared to its counterparts, the Cu-MOF-350 catalyst exhibited optimal performance in the preferential hydrogenation of noxious 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to valued 4-aminophenol (4-AP), maintaining high activity for up to ten consecutive rounds. The enhanced catalytic hydrogenation efficiency of the Cu-MOF-350 catalyst is ascribed to its distinctive nanostructural features, which originate from the synergistic interplay between Cu and Cu 2 O species. In addition, the improved uniform distribution of Cu@Cu 2 O nanoparticles generates higher concentration of interfacial exposed reactive Cu 0 /Cu + sites on the Cu-MOF-350 surface, which are considered crucial for the promoted hydrogenation of 4-NP.

A flexible non-enzymatic glucose electrochemical sensor with high sensitivity and stability was constructed using the electrode by in situ growth of Cu/Cu 2 O nanocomposites on carbon dots (CDs) modified carbon cloth (CC) by electrodeposition reduction method, where the modification of CDs provided a stable anchoring site for the growth of the nanocomposites and enhanced the stability of Cu/Cu 2 O in solution. The electrode had a glucose detection range of 0.2–100 μM and 0.1–1 mM, which offered the advantages of high sensitivity (4510.89 μA mM −1 cm −2 and 2385.94 μA mM −1 cm −2 ) and low detection limit (0.66 μM). The sensor also exhibits excellent selectivity, reproducibility, immunity to interference and long-term stability. In addition, In order to verify the enhancement effect of CDs on their electrochemical properties, Cu/Cu 2 O electrodes were prepared in this paper by the same method on several CCs modified with different CDs (e.g., glycine, cysteine and riboflavin), The results showed that the incorporation of CDs enhanced the electrocatalytic ability compared to the electrode without CDs modification, indicating that CDs can provide more active sites and electron transport channels for Cu/Cu 2 O, and that this CDs-enhanced Cu/Cu 2 O nanocomposite can be used for non-enzymatic glucose electrochemical sensors.

Photocatalysis technologies for degrading organic pollutants have emerged as a promising strategy for environmental remediation. This study aimed to develop efficient photocatalysts by synthesizing TiO 2 -loaded composites derived from CuZnAl layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and assessed their performance in the decomposition of rhodamine B (RhB). CuZnAl-LDH nanosheets were synthesized via coprecipitation and then calcined at high temperatures to obtain CuZnAl layered double oxides (CZA-LDO). By varying the amount of ascorbic acid, the CuO in CZA-LDO was reduced to different extents, thereby varying the ratio of Cu, Cu 2 O and CuO. TiO 2 was then deposited on the surface. The morphology, crystal structure, bonding state, and photocatalytic performance of the composite materials were assessed. When exposed to UV light, the optimized TiO 2 /Cu–Cu 2 O–CuO–0.7 composite material achieved a degradation rate of 96.0% for RhB within 110 min, which was significantly better than TiO 2 /CZA-LDO (46.0%) and other Cu-modified samples (66.2%–77.9%). The enhanced photocatalytic properties of the prepared nanocomposite were ascribed to doping with Cu, Cu 2 O and CuO, which effectively enhanced the electron–hole pair separation efficiency. These findings demonstrate the potential of Cu-Cu 2 O-CuO-LDO-based photocatalysts as effective materials for degrading organic contaminants in environmental remediation. Graphical abstract

A novel Cu-Cu 2 O/MnPtPd composite with enhanced peroxidase-like activity was synthesized and evaluated for colorimetric ampicillin (AMP) detection. The composite was prepared through in situ growth of Cu 2 O on a Mn-based substrate, followed by Pt and Pd nanoparticle incorporation to synergistically modulate its structural and electronic properties. This design markedly improved the catalytic decomposition of H 2 O 2 and the subsequent oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine. The Cu + /Cu 2+ redox cycle dominates the catalytic process, while the synergistic interactions among Cu, Mn, Pt, and Pd promote H 2 O 2 activation to generate •O 2 − , identified as the primary reactive species driving the colorimetric reaction. Steady-state kinetics demonstrated high affinity and catalytic efficiency toward both H 2 O 2 and TMB, surpassing natural horseradish peroxidase. Based on this nanozyme, an enzyme-free colorimetric sensing platform for AMP was established, which exhibits a dual linear response in both low concentration range (0.05–100 μg/mL) and high concentration range (100–300 μg/mL), with a low detection limit of 14.5 ng/mL. The sensor showed excellent selectivity and anti-interference capability. Recoveries for AMP in real water samples ranged from 96.34% to 103.3% with RSD below 4.31%. These results demonstrate that the Cu-Cu 2 O/MnPtPd nanozyme provides a stable, low-cost, and high-performance alternative for non-enzymatic AMP detection in environmental and food monitoring.

The chemical fixation of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into value-added cyclic carbonates is a promising pathway for carbon utilization; however, developing heterogeneous catalysts with high activity and stability remains a challenge. In this study, a Cu–Mg-MOF-74 precursor was synthesized via a solvothermal method and subsequently transformed into a Cu–Cu 2 O–MgO/C nanocomposite catalyst through a one-step pyrolysis process under N 2 atmosphere at 550°C. The pyrolysis process leads to the collapse of the MOF crystal structure and the formation of highly dispersed Cu–Cu 2 O–MgO nanoparticles embedded in a carbon matrix, while the overall morphology inherited from the MOF precursor remains largely preserved. Detailed characterization (XRD, XPS, TEM, BET, and in situ DRIFTS) reveals that the catalyst possesses a high specific surface area (296.7 m 2 ·g −1 ), abundant Lewis acid sites (Cu, Cu 2 O, and MgO), and surface oxygen-containing groups, which synergistically enhance catalytic performance. Under relatively moderate conditions (90°C, 0.7 MPa, CO 2 , 7 h), the Cu–Cu 2 O–MgO/C catalyst achieved a styrene oxide conversion of 94% with 99% selectivity, significantly outperforming its monometallic and physical mixture counterparts. Furthermore, the catalyst demonstrated excellent substrate versatility and robust recyclability over five consecutive runs without structural collapse. This work provides a facile strategy for fabricating robust MOF-derived carbon-based catalysts for sustainable CO 2 conversion.

A novel Z -scheme CuWO 4 /Cu/Cu 2 O ternary heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully synthesized via a solvothermal approach, featuring the low-cost metallic copper (Cu) as an efficient electron mediator. This unique structure was designed to enhance Cu 2 O visible light capture capability and accelerate photogenerated charge separation, thereby efficiently degrading the recalcitrant antibiotic Rifampicin (RFP). Comprehensive characterizations (XRD, XPS, SEM, EDS) confirmed the successful construction of the heterojunction, where CuWO 4 and Cu particles are integrated onto the surface of the Cu 2 O. Compared to individual components and binary composites, the optimized CuWO 4 /Cu/Cu 2 O sample demonstrated significantly superior photocatalytic activity, achieving an impressive 88.0% RFP degradation rate within 80 min under visible light. The enhanced performance is primarily ascribed to the successful formation of a Z -scheme charge transfer pathway, where the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of the metallic Cu mediator promotes carrier migration, thereby improving both carrier separation efficiency and redox capacity. Kinetic analysis confirmed a degradation rate constant ( k ) of 0.02743 min −1 , approximately 2.8 times higher than that of pure Cu 2 O. Furthermore, the composite exhibited excellent stability, maintaining a degradation rate above 80% after five recycling runs and demonstrating robust performance across a broad pH range (3.0–7.0). Based on active species trapping and band structure analysis, a Z -scheme mechanism was proposed, highlighting O 2 − as the dominant active species. This study provides a facile and low-cost strategy for constructing highly efficient LSPR-enhanced Z -scheme photocatalysts for environmental remediation.
