Z-scheme heterojunction can effectively separate photo-generated carriers and enhance photocatalytic activity of CO 2 reduction. In this work, we report indirect Z-scheme heterojunction of UiO-66-NH 2 /Cu 2 O/Cu, which achieves highly CO 2 photocatalytic conversion to CO. Among these, UiO-66-NH 2 /Cu 2 O/Cu-0.39 (U/C/Cu-0.39) displays the best activity with a CO yield of 4.54 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is 37.8 times higher than that for UiO-66-NH 2 and 50.4 times higher than that for Cu 2 O. Cu not only acts as the electron conductor of the indirect Z-scheme heterojunction to promote the charge carrier transmission, but also acts as the active site of CO 2 reduction. The increase of active sites and the CO 2 adsorption capacity results in the superior photocatalytic performances.

The electrochemical conversion of CO2 into fuels and chemicals attracts worldwide attention for tackling global warming and energy crises. However, the efficiencies and selectivities for targeted products such as formate are still far from satisfactory. Herein, core–shell structured Cu2O/Cu@C immobilized on nitrogen-doped graphene sheets (Cu2O/Cu@C/NG) is prepared and used for CO2 reduction. Cu2O/Cu@C/NG yields higher activity towards formate in terms of a lower onset potential (−0.38 V versus RHE) and higher faradaic efficiency (82.1 ± 1.2%), as well as stable performance over 30 h. The enhancements in selectivity and activity are attributed to the synergistic effects between Cu sites and N doping, simultaneously improving CO2 adsorption and the interfacial charge transfer process. Additionally, N doping restrains hydrogen evolution on the copper sites, leaving more available sites for CO2 reduction. This study provides an efficient strategy to increase the activities of electrocatalysts for CO2-to-formate electroreduction.

The electrochemical evolution of heterointerfaces in conversion-type anodes has long been poorly understood. Whether engineered interfaces survive cycling, and if not, how separated phases maintain function, remains unclear. Using two model systems Fe 3 C/Fe 3 O 4 /C (inert conductive phase) and Cu 2 O/Cu/C (oxidizable conductive phase), we uncover two diametrically opposite evolution pathways that are dictated solely by the oxidation behavior of the conductive phase. In the inert Fe 3 C system, the initial core-shell interface completely dissociates. Yet the porous carbon network alone maintains electronic connectivity, creating a remote synergy mode in which the carbon network sustains battery operation by compensating for lost heterointerface contact, without requiring direct interfacial contact between the active phases. In the oxidizable Cu system, we directly visualize a phenomenon. Cu 2 O undergoes an electrochemically driven facet reconstruction from the (111) to the (200) orientation, which progressively lowers the overpotential for the Cu → Cu 2 O reaction and makes the electrode self-optimizing with cycling. Post-mortem electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy provide direct visual evidence for both pathways. Kinetic analysis shows mixed diffusion capacitive control, with the CCC system reaching a 46.5% capacitive contribution at 1.0 mV s −1 . Full cells with K-PBA cathodes achieve 75.0% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 , demonstrating practical viability. This work challenges the long-held assumption that interfacial retention is necessary for electrochemistry. Instead, it establishes a universal design principle for durable conversion-type anodes. Ensuring electron-transport pathway integrity, whether through direct contact or indirect network connectivity, is the key. The discovery of electrochemically driven facet reconstruction also opens new avenues for controlling surface crystallography under operating conditions.

Cu 2 O/Cu@SiO 2 core–shell nanoparticles were fabricated by a DC arc plasma process. • Differential interfacial interactions among molten droplets drive core–shell formation. • Interfacial tension is identified as the key factor controlling structural evolution. Cu@SiO 2 core-shell heterogenous nano particles (Cu@SiO 2 CSHNPs) demonstrate significant application advantages in catalysis and functional material modification. Direct current arc plasma technology holds considerable promise for the synthesis and industrialization of related materials due to its inherent advantages. However, issues such as the complex and unclear synthesis mechanism of the Metal@SiO 2 system via direct current arc plasma methods constrain its potential for structural and performance regulation. In this study, Cu 2 O/Cu@SiO 2 core-shell particles were in situ synthesized for the first time via DC arc process. Building upon this, morphological and compositional analysis of the products led to the innovative proposal of a formation mechanism for core-shell heterostructures based on differential interfacial interactions between micro-nano molten droplets. The experimental results reveal that differences in interfacial tension among micro/nanoscale molten droplets play a decisive role in governing the phase distribution and structural evolution of the products. This work provides a new perspective for understanding the formation of Metal@SiO 2 core–shell nanostructures under arc plasma conditions and offers theoretical guidance for the controllable synthesis of related heterogeneous nanomaterials.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based heterojunctions, as one of porous materials, offer abundant unsaturated coordination sites, making them suitable for photocatalytic N 2 reduction. However, complicated reaction methods, mismatched interfaces and ineffective photo-induced carrier separation restricted their applications. In this study, a kind of Cu 2 O/Cu-MOF heterojunction was synthesized via a fast in situ method in acidic medium (CCM-a). It showed a typical core-shell structure with Cu-MOF coating surrounding the Cu 2 O. The photocatalytic NH 3 yield of CCM-a reached 83.25 μmol/g/h, which was 9.03 and 19.64 higher than that of pure Cu 2 O and CCM-b, respectively. The reaction pathway of N 2 reduction was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and in-situ FT-IR spectra, revealing a preference for the alternating association pathway. The photocatalytic mechanisms were analyzed through the built-in electric field (IEF) theory, supporting its S-scheme charge-transfer route of CCM-a. The novel material achieved from in situ strategy not only ensured a good interface matching ability but also facilitated sufficient separation of photo-generated carriers via a S-scheme route for efficient photocatalytic N 2 fixation.

In photocatalyst design, the rapid recombination of photo-generated electron–hole pairs in the bulk or on the surface of semiconductors is a major limiting factor in achieving high photocatalytic efficiency, which is a key scientific issue. Surface modification is used to change the surface properties of photocatalyst related to dark adsorption and photocatalytic efficiency. In this work, micro-sized CuO powder was surface modified by in situ-growing heterojunctions CuO/Cu 2 O and CuO/Cu 2 O/Cu when simply calcinating a mixture of CuO and urea, in which urea acted as a reducing agent. The phases, microstructure, composition, photogenerated carrier lifetime, dark adsorption rate, photodegradation rate, and surface charges of the as-modified powder were investigated. The surface modification was found to change the negative surface charge of micro-sized CuO to a positive one, resulting in enhanced dark adsorption (nearly twice that of pristine CuO). Furthermore, the surface modification prolonged the photogenerated carrier lifetime, which in turn enhanced the photocatalytic efficiency. Overall, this work implies that the electric properties of surface charges and carrier lifetime can be altered by constructing an appropriate heterojunction on the surface of the photocatalyst.
