Promoting oxygen reduction reaction kinetics through manipulating electron redistribution in CoP/Cu3P@NC for aqueous/flexible Zn–air batteries

Lixia Wang,Jiasui Huang,Jia Huang,Bowen Yao,Aling Zhou,Zhiyang Huang,Tayirjan Taylor Isimjan,Bao Wang,Xiulin Yang

Zinc–air batteries (ZABs) are considered a promising energy storage technology due to their high energy density and environmental friendliness. However, the development of efficient and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts remains a challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis of a highly efficient CoP/Cu3P@NC catalyst using a Zn-MOF template, which was transformed into N- and C-doped bimetallic phosphides via high-temperature phosphating. The CoP/Cu3P@NC-based ZAB exhibits remarkable performance with an open-circuit voltage of 1.50 V, a peak power density of 215 mW cm−2, and a specific capacity of 691 mA h gzn−1, outperforming conventional Pt/C-based ZABs. The catalyst maintained 93.5% of its initial activity after 300 h of cycling, demonstrating its excellent long-term stability. Furthermore, CoP/Cu3P@NC was applied in flexible ZABs, achieving a power density of 74 mW cm−2 and showing stable performance under various bending conditions. The superior performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of Co and Cu, optimized structural properties, and high porosity, enhancing mass transfer and oxygen activation. These results suggest that CoP/Cu3P@NC is a highly promising ORR catalyst for next-generation ZABs, offering both high efficiency and durability in flexible and conventional energy storage applications.

Half-Cell and Full-Cell Applications of Highly Stable and Binder-Free Sodium Ion Batteries Based on Cu3P Nanowire Anodes

Mouping Fan,Yu Chen,Yihao Xie,Tingzhou Yang,Xiaowei Shen,Na Xu,Haiying Yu,Chenglin Yan

Sodium-ion battery (SIB) is especially attractive in cost-effective energy storage device as an alternative to lithium-ion battery. Particularly, metal phosphides as potential anodes for SIBs have recently been demonstrated owing to their higher specific capacities compared with those of carbonaceous materials. Unfortunately, most reported metal phosphides consist of irregular particles ranged from several hundreds nanometers to tens of micrometers, thus delivering limited cyclic stability. This paper reports the sodium storage properties of additive-free Cu 3 P nanowire (CPNW) anode directly grown on copper current collector via an in situ growth followed by phosphidation method. Therefore, as a result of its structure features, CPNW anode demonstrates highly stable cycling ability with an ≈70% retention in capacity at the 260th cycle, whereas most reported metal phosphides have limited cycle numbers ranged between 30 and 150. Besides, the reaction mechanism between Cu 3 P and Na is investigated by examining the intermediate products at different charge/discharge stages using ex situ X-ray diffraction measurements. Furthermore, to explore the practical application of CPNW anode, a pouch-type Na + full cell consisting of CPNW anode and Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode is assembled and characterized. As a demonstration, a 10 cm × 10 cm light-emmiting diode (LED) screen is successfully powered by the Na + full cell.

Three-dimension structural Co-Fe-P/Cu3P derived from the Prussian blue analogue (PBA) grown on nanorods for oxygen evolution reaction

Qian Zhao,Lei Liu,Ying Du,Sisi Jiang,Tingshun Jiang

Rational design of non-noble metal electrocatalyst with high stability and activity for OER is desirable for the production of renewable energy to solve the environmental crisis. Starting from Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) with special advantages, the trimetallic hollow structural Co-Fe-P/Cu 3 P/CF covered with extended nanosheets grown on nanorods was synthesized via ion exchange and calcination approaches in this study. The overpotential of the prepared electrode was only 205 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm − 2 , and it can maintain the stable catalytic activity for at least 60 h. The prominent electric performance is mainly attributed to the construction of the unique morphology, in which the rod-shaped structure can promote the transportation of the reactants, and the hollow structure as well as the nanosheets outside can expand the specific surface area. The electronic interaction between multiple metals can also improve the conductivity of the catalyst. The characterization analysis of the post electrode after long-term oxygen evolution reaction imply that the surface of the catalytic electrode was partially oxidized to the corresponding oxide, which can generate the new active sites to maintain the high catalytic activity together with the residual phosphide. Our research might provide a new reference for the deep exploration of PBA-based materials applied in electrochemical energy conversion and storage.

Facile Synthesis of Support-Free Copper-Based Catalyst for PH3 Catalytic Oxidation in Micro-Oxygen

Li Yuan,Fan Jun,Huang Bingyao,Li Hongyan,Zhao Jie,Li Kai,Wang Fei

Removal of PH 3 from industrial gases have attracted extensive attention due to its high toxicity and catalyst poisoning characteristics. In this study, a series of copper-based support-free catalysts were synthesized by a facile method using different nitrogen and carbon sources. The 100% removal of PH 3 could reach 540 min in micro-oxygen environment by using the obtained catalyst. The X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results exhibited that the formation of Cu 3 P was contributed to the deactivation of the catalysts, which was considered as active component for the decomposition of PH 3 . The PH 3 decomposition performance could achieve 99% under 450 ℃ with 90% yield of H 2 using the exhausted catalysts. This strategy is beneficial for the development of dephosphorization catalyst and provides a new route for the secondary use of exhausted catalysts. Graphical A facile strategy was employed for synthesize support-free catalysts for PH3 oxidation by using Cu(NO3)2 and different nitrogen resources or carbon resource. The performance were thoroughly compared. The exhausted catalyst was conducted in the PH3 catalytic dissociation reaction, where the conversion rate of PH3 could reach 99% with 90% hydrogen production under 450 ℃.

Boosting pH-universal hydrogen evolution of the In/Cu3P Mott-Schottky heterojunction electrocatalyst by constructing the ohmic contact and promoting water activation

Pengfei Du,Fang Li,Huiqin Yu,Jing Cao,Yuan Ma,Haili Lin

Developing high-activity electrocatalysts compatible with pH-universal electrolytes is critical for efficient hydrogen production via water splitting. Herein, an In/Cu 3 P Mott-Schottky heterojunction electrocatalyst was fabricated through a facile electrodeposition method. The as-synthesized In/Cu 3 P exhibits exceptional hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance across acidic, neutral, and alkaline media, achieving low overpotentials of 36 mV, 68 mV, and 51 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. It also maintains robust stability for 400 h at 50 and 100 mA cm −2 in acidic electrolyte, outperforming most reported electrocatalysts. Interface electronic analysis and energy band structure characterization confirm the formation of strong ohmic contact between In and Cu 3 P, which effectively reduces interfacial charge transfer resistance. Interfacial electron transfer from In to Cu 3 P fine-tunes the d-band center and optimizes the hydrogen binding energy at the heterojunction interface. Additionally, the In/Cu 3 P Mott-Schottky structure promotes H 2 O activation and lowers the energy barrier in alkaline and neutral solutions. The intimate interface also inhibits copper dissociation from the Cu 3 P lattice, ensuring long-term stability in harsh electrolytes. This work establishes a theoretical foundation for designing pH-universal HER electrocatalysts via metal–semiconductor interfaces and provides a promising strategy for developing high-efficiency electrochemical catalysts.

Self-Supported Cedarlike Semimetallic Cu3P Nanoarrays as a 3D High-Performance Janus Electrode for Both Oxygen and Hydrogen Evolution under Basic Conditions

Chun-Chao Hou,Qian-Qian Chen,Chuan-Jun Wang,Fei Liang,Zheshuai Lin,Wen-Fu Fu,Yong Chen

There has been strong and growing interest in the development of cost-effective and highly active oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts for alternative fuels utilization and conversion devices. We report herein that semimetallic Cu3P nanoarrays directly grown on 3D copper foam (CF) substrate can function as effective electrocatalysts for water oxidation. Specifically, the surface oxidation-activated Cu3P only required a relatively low overpotential of 412 mV to achieve a current density of 50 mA cm–2 and displayed a small Tafel slope of 63 mV dec–1 in 0.1 M KOH solution, on account of the collaborative effect of large roughness factor (RF) and semimetallic character. Following that, investigations into the mechanism revealed the formation of a unique active phase during the water oxidation process in which conductive Cu3P was the core covered with a thin copper oxide/hydroxide layer. Moreover, this Cu3P 3D electrode was also applied to the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and showed good catalytic performance and stability under the same basic conditions.

Study on hydrolase mechanism of copper compound nanoparticles and its application in the evaluation of gut bacteria in aquatic environment

Zhixuan Yu,Jinxing Chen,Daiyong Chao,Xiaoxuan Sun,Ling Liu,Shaojun Dong

Conversing proteinaceous enzyme behavior into nanomaterials is intriguing academically, but the threshold from mimicry to accessing sophisticated biological entities has not yet been crossed. Herein, we disclosed the pan-glycoside hydrolases-like (p-GHs-like) activities of Cu 3 P and Cu 2 O nanoparticles and decently confirmed their consistent catalytic mechanism as natural glycoside hydrolase, that is, the precise bond breaking, anomeric carbon configuration and catalytic attack mode. We then introduced p-GHs-like NPs into Escherichia coli to establish a feedback regulatory model for the β- D -glucuronidase (expressed by uidA) that was initially expressed in trace amounts. An upregulation of uidA from 72 to 1000 counts was induced by the p-GHs-like activities via pre-released β-glucuronides derivatives, further contributing to 1–2 orders enhancement of the enzyme production. We unearthed the specific catalytic mechanism to unlock a black box of enzyme-like inorganic feedback on the natural enzyme synthesis process, pushing mimicry leaped to physiological behavior.

Phosphorous and cations boost the electrocatalytic performances of Cu-based compounds for hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions and overall water-splitting

Qihao Wang,Yingxue Du,Yuecheng Gong,Weiping Xiao,Hongdong Li,Yunmei Du,Guangrui Xu,Zexing Wu,Lei Wang

Developing durable, effective and inexpensive electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are crucial for the advancement of water splitting as a solution to the energy shortage. In this study, nanospheres stacked into nanochains are successfully prepared by oxidative corrosive engineering, solvothermal, and following calcination process (Co-Cu 3 P/CF). The unique nanochain structure facilitates growing the specific surface area, thereby exposing plenitude active sites. The introduced phosphorus (P) and Co ions can alter the electronic characteristics of metal phosphides, not only can accelerate the electron transport of the catalysts, but speed up the reaction kinetics. Thus, the prepared Co-Cu 3 P/CF exhibits low overpotentials, with 240/84 mV, in alkaline media for OER/HER to attain 10 mA cm −2 . In alkaline freshwater/seawater, the self-assembled electrolyzer needs only 1.51/1.58 V to achieve 10 mA cm −2 . This work provides an approach for the preparation of high-performing and economical electrocatalysts.

Self-Etching Synthesis of Superhydrophilic Iron-Rich Defect Heterostructure-Integrated Catalyst with Fast Oxygen Evolution Kinetics for Large-Current Water Splitting

Tingting Tang,Yanfang Teng,Kuoteng Sun,Fengli Wei,Luyan Shi,Yongle Chen,Sheraz Muhammad,Tayirjan Taylor Isimjan,Jianniao Tian,Xiulin Yang

Graphical A flower-like Ni 2 P-FeP 4 -Cu 3 P/NF heterostructure catalyst, synthesized via pH-controlled etching and gas-phase phosphating, exhibits excellent OER activity (156/210 mV at 10/100 mA cm −2 ) and overall water splitting performance (1.47 V at 10 mA cm −2 ), due to synergistic effects from abundant grain boundaries, strong hydrophilicity, and rich Fe defects. Developing catalysts with rich metal defects, strong hydrophilicity, and extensive grain boundaries is crucial for enhancing the kinetics of electrocatalytic water oxidation and facilitating large-current water splitting. In this study, we utilized pH-controlled etching and gas-phase phosphating to synthesize a flower-like Ni 2 P-FeP 4 -Cu 3 P modified nickel foam heterostructure catalyst. This catalyst features pronounced hydrophilicity and a high concentration of Fe defects. It exhibits low overpotentials of 156 mV and 210 mV at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 respectively, and maintains stability for up to 200 h at 100 mA cm −2 with only 7.3 % degradation, showcasing outstanding electrocatalytic water oxidation performance. Furthermore, when integrated into a Ni 2 P-FeP 4 -Cu 3 P/NF||Pt−C/NF electrolyzer, it achieves excellent overall water splitting performance, reaching current densities of 10 and 400 mA cm −2 at just 1.47 V and 1.73 V, respectively, and operates stably for 60 h at 500 mA cm −2 with minimal degradation. Analysis indicates that high-valence oxyhydroxides/phosphides of Ni, Fe, and Cu act as the primary active species. The presence of abundant Fe defects enhances electron transfer, strong hydrophilicity improves electrolyte contact, and numerous grain boundaries synergistically modulate the activation energy between active sites and oxygen-containing intermediates, significantly improving the kinetics of water oxidation.

NIR-Driven Water Splitting H2 Production Nanoplatform for H2-Mediated Cascade-Amplifying Synergetic Cancer Therapy

Qi Wang,Yishun Ji,Jinsheng Shi,Lili Wang

As a newly emerging treatment strategy for many diseases, hydrogen therapy has attracted a lot of attention because of its excellent biosafety. However, the high diffusivity and low solubility of hydrogen make it difficult to accumulate in local lesions. Herein, we develop a H2 self-generation nanoplatform by in situ water splitting driven by near-infrared (NIR) laser. In this work, core–shell nanoparticles (CSNPs) of NaGdF4:Yb,Tm/g-C3N4/Cu3P (UCC) nanocomposites as core encapsulated with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) modified with folic acid as shell are designed and synthesized. Due to the acid-responsive ZIF-8 shell, enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect, and folate receptor-mediated endocytosis, CSNPs are selectively captured by tumor cells. Upon 980 nm laser irradiation, CSNPs exhibit a high production capacity of H2 and active oxygen species (ROS), as well as an appropriate photothermal conversion temperature. Furthermore, rising temperature increases the Fenton reaction rate of Cu(I) with H2O2 and strengthens the curative effect of chemodynamic therapy (CDT). The excess glutathione (GSH) in tumor microenvironment (TME) can deplete positive holes produced in the valence band of g-C3N4 in the g-C3N4/Cu3P Z-scheme heterojunction. GSH also can reduce Cu(II) to Cu(I), ensuring a continuous Fenton reaction. Thus, a NIR-driven H2 production nanoplatform is constructed for H2-mediated cascade-amplifying multimodal synergetic therapy.
