Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), a highly toxic and carcinogenic environmental pollutant, poses severe threats to ecological balance and human health. Traditional colorimetric detection methods relying on peroxidase-like nanozymes often suffer from interference caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and coexisting redox-active substances, compromising their accuracy in complex water matrices. Herein, we report a novel H 2 O 2 -free colorimetric strategy for the ultrasensitive detection of Cr(VI) using atomically dispersed CuCo-NC catalysts. Unlike conventional mechanisms, the synergistic interplay between Cu and Co atoms modulates the electronic structure (d-band center), enabling Cr(VI) to act as a direct electron acceptor. This unique pathway facilitates the oxidation of TMB without generating ROS intermediates, thereby conferring exceptional resistance to common interferents such as Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ . The sensor exhibits a wide linear range (50–1000 nM) and an ultralow detection limit of 1.12 nM, surpassing many existing methods. Furthermore, the practical applicability of this probe is validated through the successful monitoring of Cr(VI) in real water samples (e.g., Guilin Lijiang River), demonstrating its robustness for on-site environmental surveillance. This work not only provides a reliable tool for early-warning monitoring of chromium pollution but also offers mechanistic insights into H 2 O 2 -free catalytic pathways. Graphical abstract Schematic illustration of the H 2 O 2 -free colorimetric sensing strategy using atomically dispersed CuCo-NC nanozymes. The synergistic Cu/Co dual sites enable Cr(VI) to act as a direct electron acceptor, bypassing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and thus eliminating interference from coexisting redox-active substances. This mechanism allows for the ultrasensitive and selective visual detection of Cr(VI) in real water environments

A binder-free, self-supporting electrode was prepared via two-step electrodeposition. • Electrosorption capacity of PPy/Cu-Co-MHM@GF electrode reached 711.2 mg/g at pH 2. • PPy coating provides amino/imino groups and protects active sites from corrosion. • The synergistic effect among multiple active sites ensures excellent uranium removal. Electrochemical technology has attracted much attention for the removal of uranium(VI). However, it still faces the contradiction of balancing electrode stability and removal capacity under acidic conditions. In this work, a conductive polymer protection strategy was proposed to construct a novel in-situ polypyrrole (PPy) encapsulated Cu 0 /CuO-Co x O y multiphase hybrid material (MHM) on graphite felt (GF). The binder-free, self-supporting composite electrode denoted as PPy/Cu-Co-MHM@GF was fabricated via a facile electrodeposition method. This electrode achieved highly efficient uranium removal under acidic conditions. At pH = 2.0, as high as 98.2% of uranium could be effectively removed by PPy/Cu-Co-MHM@GF, and the electrosorption capacity could reach 711.2 mg/g. Moreover, the PPy/Cu-Co-MHM@GF electrode had excellent selective removal ability for uranium, and the K d value reached 43,173.01 mL/g. The experimental and characterization results indicated that the outstanding electrosorption capacity of PPy/Cu-Co-MHM@GF was not only due to the formation of electrical double layer, but also originated from the synergistic effect of various types of active sites (Co(OH) 2 , CoO, CuO and PPy). PPy acted as a physical barrier to reduce H + corrosion and provided abundant amino/imino groups to enhance UO 2 2+ coordination, ultimately realizing the synergistic removal of uranium. This study has opened up new horizons for the treatment of acidic radioactive wastewater. Download: Download high-res image (216KB) Download: Download full-size image

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) have excellent electrochemical properties. However, they are commonly associated with short cycle lives, agglomeration, and lower electrical conductivity. To ameliorate these drawbacks, porous rod-shaped CuO@Co3O4 has been synthesized through calcination with optimized oxidation temperature by using CuCo-MOF-74 as a template. Due to the porous structure, the CuO@Co3O4 electrode significantly increases the contact area with the electrolyte and greatly improves the reaction kinetics. As a result, the CuO@Co3O4 electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with a specific capacitance of 545.5 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1. The capacitance retention at 10 A g−1 was 88.7% after 10 000 cycles. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor (SC) has been assembled with CuO@Co3O4 as the positive electrode and commercial reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as the negative electrode, and the device has exhibited an energy density of 38.2 W h kg−1 at a power density of 1268.3 W kg−1. Impressively, the capacitance retention remained 83.2% even after 10 000 cycles at a high current density of 10 A g−1. This performance has demonstrated the potential of CuO@Co3O4 as an anode material for SCs.

Nitroarenes are important chemicals but display toxity to environment and organisms. In the present work, non-precious bicomponent CuCo-based nanocomposites (CuCo 2 O 4 /CuO) prepared with the aid of gamma(γ)-ray-irradiation were utilized for hydrogen production from ammonia borane (AB) hydrolysis and tandem hydrogenation of nitroarenes. The γ-ray-irradiation remarkably boosted the catalytic performance for the AB dehydrogenation and the hydrogenation of nitroarenes. Hydrogen generation rate (HGR) for the CuCo 2 O 4 /CuO catalyst reached 856.3 mL min −1 ·g cat −1 , which was approximately two-fold than that of the catalyst prepared by conventional method (only 397.1 mL min −1 ·g cat −1 ). Meanwhile, this irradiation-induced catalyst also showed excellent performance for the hydrogenation of screened nitroarenes with 100% yield of the corresponding amines. The CuCo 2 O 4 /CuO catalyst exhibited high reusability with ∼90% remained activity of the initial one after six runs. The bicomponent CuCo 2 O 4 /CuO exhibited positive hydrogen spillover and synergistic effects contributing to the considerable activity improvement, which is beneficial to the detoxication, conversion and utilization of poison nitroarenes.

The direct dehydrogenation of lactic acid (LA) to pyruvic acid (PyA) presents a sustainable and atom-economical route for biomass valorization, yet it demands high-performance catalysts to achieve satisfactory activity and selectivity. While bimetallic catalysts often show enhanced performance, a deep understanding of the interfacial synergy remains a challenge. Herein, we report a series of CuCo bimetallic oxide catalysts that exhibit remarkable performance in the direct dehydrogenation of LA to PyA, significantly outperforming their monometallic counterparts. A combination of detailed catalyst characterization and kinetic analyses unravels the critical role of the CuCo oxide interface. It is demonstrated that the Co sites at the interface are primarily responsible for the activation and cleavage of the α-C-H and α-O-H bond in lactate, while the adjacent Cu species facilitate the stabilization of the reaction intermediate and the recombination and desorption of hydrogen. This synergistic cooperation at the interface not only promotes the reaction rate but also effectively suppresses undesired side reactions, such as decarbonylation and dehydration, thereby ensuring high selectivity to PyA. The optimized catalyst with a Cu/Co molar ratio of 3:2 demonstrated enhanced performance, delivering 73.4% LA conversion and 78.1% PyA selectivity at 300 °C, which surpasses the results obtained over the CuO 1-x /SiO₂-H400 benchmark under identical conditions. This work provides fundamental insights into the bifunctional mechanism of bimetallic oxides in direct dehydrogenation reactions, offering a strategic guideline for the rational design of efficient and selective catalytic systems for sustainable chemistry.

The electrochemical reduction of nitrate (NO3–, NO3RR) and nitrite (NO2–, NO2RR) enables sustainable, carbon-neutral, and decentralized routes to produce ammonia (NH3). Copper-based materials are promising electrocatalysts for NO3– conversion; however, their performance in selective conversion to NH3 is still poor. Herein, we present a Cu–Co tandem catalyst inspired by the conversion of NO3–-to-NH3 in nature, which can easily remove NO2– via the collaboration of two active centers. A mechanistic study has elucidated the tandem catalytic process, where direct electron transfer coupled with H+ bonding plays a dominant role in the NO3–-to-NO2– conversion at the Cu site, followed by the further reduction of NO2– to NH3 at the Co site. The Cu3Co1-NC electrode delivers a NO3– removal efficiency of 80% at −0.58 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode, with a NH3 yield rate of 490 μg·h–1·cm–2 and an FE of 77%. More importantly, the as-prepared Cu3Co1-NC electrode maintains comparable activity and stability for complex NO3RR systems with coexisting substrates, which is promising for sustainable ammonia synthesis and its application.

GOx@ZIF-90@CuCo-MOF composite was synthesized via synergistic self-assembly. • Bimetallic sites and ZIF-90 shell significantly enhanced nanozyme activity. • The GOx@ZIF-90@CuCo-MOF paper-based nanozyme sensor was fabricated for rapid and noninvasive glucose detection in saliva. • The sensor achieved a 13.5 μM detection limit within a 20-min reaction. Glucose biosensors are pivotal to diabetes management; however, traditional fingerstick blood collection methods are often challenging due to their invasiveness, pain, high cost, and inability to provide continuous monitoring. Here, we constructed a paper-based colorimetric sensing platform using a multifunctional metal–organic framework (MOF) composite system to enable rapid, noninvasive detection of glucose in saliva. This platform utilized a CuCo-MOF framework, loaded with glucose oxidase (GOx) and ZIF-90 via a synergistic self-assembly mechanism, to catalyze the colorimetric reaction of H 2 O 2 and tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The synergistic effect of the composite significantly enhanced the overall catalytic efficiency, enabling a sensitive response to glucose levels in saliva. Using ImageJ, color images captured with a smartphone were analyzed using RGB color channels to quantitatively determine glucose levels in saliva. The detection time was 20 min, with a detection limit (LOD) of 13.5 μM and a linear range of 50–2000 μM. This platform offered advantages with the absence of blood sample collection, ease of operation, and visual response. It provided new material strategies and design ideas for developing portable, non-invasive blood glucose monitoring technology. In this work, we present a dual-mode assay system consisting of a nanozyme and a luminogen with the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature. In the assay system, the chosen nanozyme named CuCo-0 catalyzes the substrate to produce colorimetric signals, while the aggregates of H 4 ETTC (4,4′,4″,4‴-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl) tetrakis ([1,1′-biphenyl]-4-carboxylic acid), a typical AIE luminogen, generate fluorescent signals. The peroxidase-like activity of the CuCo-0 nanozyme can be remarkably suppressed with sequential additions of antioxidants , leading to a dual-signal response characterized by enhanced fluorescence emission and reduced UV-vis absorbance. On this basis, a dual-mode assay capable of producing both colorimetric and fluorescent signals for the assessment of antioxidant capacity using gallic acid as a representative antioxidant was exploited. Good linearity can be obtained in the 0–60 μM range for both colorimetric analysis and fluorescent analysis, with detection limits of 1.3 μM and 0.35 μM, respectively. Furthermore, this dual-mode assay was successfully applied to real gallnut samples, yielding satisfactory results.

The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) has emerged as a promising strategy for ammonia (NH3) synthesis under ambient conditions. However, the sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) not only significantly restricts the overall efficiency of the NO3RR process, but also inevitably wastes electrical energy. In this study, we synthesized a series of CuCo layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets by adjusting the Cu/Co ratio, which demonstrate enhanced electrocatalytic activity for the NO3RR at the cathode and organic pollution degradation at the anode. Specifically, Cu2Co1-LDH nanosheets exhibit an exceptional NH3 yield of 0.32 mmol h–1 cm–2 and a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 82.24% at −1.0 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Meanwhile, the optimized Cu4Co1-LDH nanosheets achieve highly efficient 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) oxidation reaction (DOR) at 1.9 V vs RHE, which is 1.5 times higher than that of the Cu1Co1-LDH. Ultimately, the Cu2Co1-LDH cathode and Cu4Co1-LDH anode were coupled to form an asymmetric NO3RR||DOR bifunctional system that maintains a high NH3 yield and 2,4-DCP degradation at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 under a cell voltage of 1.89 V, 230 mV lower than that of the NO3RR||OER arrangement. A series of electrochemical tests reveal that the excellent electrocatalytic performance of the CuCo-LDH nanosheets stems from the bimetallic synergy and layered nanostructure, which effectively inhibit the competing reactions and enhance the charge-transfer efficiency. This study demonstrates an effective design for bifunctional nanocatalysts to address the kinetic sluggishness in the NO3RR and a strategy for asymmetric coupling with the degradation of organic pollutants.

The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia (eNO 3 RR) offers a sustainable route to simultaneously decarbonize ammonia production and remediate nitrate wastewater. However, its efficiency is challenged by a complex multi-step reaction pathway; to address this, we designed a tandem copper‑cobalt catalyst supported on a carbon/nitrogen/oxygen substrate (CuCo-CNO). The carbon substrate not only provides stable anchoring sites for active metals but also facilitates strong electronic coupling between the tandem Cu and Co sites, thereby significantly enhancing catalytic activity and selectively promoting the critical eNO 3 RR steps. The CuCo-CNO catalyst achieves a high Faradaic efficiency of 96.5% and an ammonia selectivity of 95% at −0.8 V vs. RHE, significantly outperforming its single-metal counterparts (Cu-CNO and Co-CNO). In situ electrochemical-Raman spectroscopy reveals that the initially metallic Cu Co sites undergo electrochemically driven reconstruction into Cu 2 O and CoOOH. Compared with the single-metal analogs, theoretical calculations further indicate that CuCo-CNO exhibits a higher energy barrier for H 2 evolution and a lower eNO 3 RR energy barrier, confirming the synergistic catalytic mechanism. A Zn-NO 3 − battery assembled with CuCo-CNO as the cathode delivers a maximum power density of approximately 3.35 mW cm −2 . This work offers a valuable strategy for designing tandem catalysts on carbon supports for efficient electrocatalytic nitrate-to-ammonia conversion. g-C 3 N 4 supports from different methods load CuCo catalysts for AB hydrolysis. • K + -intercalated g-C 3 N 4 lowest work function promotes electron transfer to metals. • The LSPR effect of CuCo enriches electrons at Co active sites. • The catalyst shows AB hydrolysis performance with a TOF of 36 min −1 at 298 K and 58 min −1 at 313 K. Hydrogen generation from ammonia borane (AB) hydrolysis over supported non-noble metal catalysts holds great promise. However, the low electron density at non-noble metal active sites and the difficulty in enhancing metal-support interactions remain critical challenges. In this work, K-intercalated crystalline g-C 3 N 4 (CNNK) was synthesized as a support for deposited CuCo bimetallic nanoparticles. The incorporated K + ions function as electron transfer channels. Compared to bulk g-C 3 N 4 (CNB), the CNNK exhibits a reduced work function from 4.2 eV to 3.4 eV. Moreover, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of CuCo induces electron redistribution and enriches electron density on Co surfaces. Under visible-light irradiation, Cu 0.5 Co 0.5 /CNNK-3 shows much higher H 2 generation rate than Cu 0.5 Co 0.5 /CNB with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 36 min −1 at 298 K and 58 min −1 at 313 K.
