A major challenge in the field of photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction is to design catalyst systems featuring high selectivity for CO production, long-term stability and a composition of Earth-abundant elements. Here, we present a metal–organic framework (MOF) based catalyst to mitigate the technical problems associated with the above-mentioned features. We report a carbon-coated CuNi alloy nanocatalyst obtained by high temperature vacuum treatment of a MOF material (CuNiBTC). The resulting carbon encapsulated CuNi (denoted as CuNi/C) nanoparticles possess a well-designed core–shell composite structure with graphene shells. Meanwhile, we investigated the reaction mechanism of CO2 on the surface of the CuNi/C photocatalyst in an aqueous solution containing triethanolamine. The experimental results show that the activity and catalytic yield of CuNi/C are much higher than those of Cu/C and Ni/C alone. At the same time, the catalytic activity of CuNi/C is also affected by changing the reaction temperature in the preparation process. As a result, the CuNi/C samples can achieve nearly 90% selectivity for NIR-light-driven CO2 reduction to CO. Our approach demonstrates the potential of non-semiconductor materials as catalysts for efficient and selective reduction of CO2 to CO.

Electrochemical synthesis of ammonia (NH₃) through cathodic nitrate reduction presents an effective alternative to the Haber-Bosch process, enabling efficient ammonia production without significant environmental pollution. Electrocatalytic degradation strategy is an efficient and environmentally friendly tool for the treatment of oily wastewater containing partially hydrolized polyacrylamide (HPAM). Thus, coupling cathodic nitrate reduction with anodic HPAM oxidation can further enhance ammonia synthesis efficiency and HPAM degradation efficiency. Here, we reported an N-doped carbon nanotube loaded with CuNi-x (X = 0.5, 1, 2) as an electrocatalyst for cathodic nitrate reduction coupled with anodic HPAM oxidative degradation. Notably, the CuNi-1 variant achieved the highest ammonia yield of 4962.76 ± 40.22 μg h-1 mgcat-1 and a Faradaic efficiency of 85.91 ± 0.42%. Furthermore, the oxidative degradation rate of HPAM reached a maximum of 81.91 ± 0.36% within 2 h. Anodic HPAM oxidation not only promotes cathodic nitrate reduction but also enables the acquisition of valuable anodic products. Using in-situ ATR-SEIRAS, in-situ DEMS, and DFT calculations, we thoroughly analyzed reaction intermediates and the critical role of the CuNi bimetallic system in electrocatalytic nitrate reduction. The coupled reaction system was established to achieve both efficient ammonia synthesis and HPAM degradation.

Engineering structural and electronic properties of electrocatalysts is a direct method to boost water splitting. Herein, distinctive branch-leaf-shaped CuNi@NiFeCu nanodendrites are successfully synthesized by a novel bionic design strategy. Importantly, this unique catalyst can display superior performance for overall water splitting, which only requires 42 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 285 mV at 50 mA cm −2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Further mechanism studies disclosed that Cu atoms in nanosheet edges not only act as key active sites for HER, but also draw electron in e g orbital of Fe active sites, which weakens the adsorption strength of oxygen-intermediate and accordingly enhances OER activity. Moreover, the optimized structure can prevent the agglomeration of nanosheets, provide numerous crystalline-amorphous interfaces and oxygen vacancies, which is beneficial to the enhancement of reaction kinetics. This work paved an original strategy to improve the activity of 2D materials.

Greenhouse effect raised by the carbon dioxide emissions has become a pivotal resolved issue at present. The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO 2 and methanol is one of infusive green pathways. In this study, a novel CuNi alloy nanoparticles encapsulated in a thermal stable triphenylphosphine porous organic polymers (POP-PPh 3 ), Cu x Ni y @POP-PPh 3 catalysts, is synthesized and then explored in the direct DMC synthesis reactions. The Cu x Ni y @POP-PPh 3 catalysts are fully characterized by a series of techniques, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and hydrogen temperature programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR). TEM images show the CuNi particles are around 7 nm, and XPS analyses demonstrate the alloy particles comprise of a metallic (CuNi) 0 core and a thin Ni 2 O 3 surface. The Cu x Ni y @POP-PPh 3 catalysts, fixed into a honeycomb ceramic to give a monolithic catalyst, show an excellent catalytic performance (a 10.5% methanol conversion with an 80% DMC selectivity) during the direct DMC synthesis reactions in a fixed bed reactor. The high catalytic performance over Cu x Ni y @POP-PPh 3 catalysts is mainly attributed to the pore structure of POP-PPh 3 , uniform distribution of alloy nanoparticles, and the unique performance of the monolithic catalyst ( e.g ., removing by-product of water in time).

Compared to monometallic counterparts, core–shell structured nanowires may possess additional performances or even new properties because of synergistic effects between two components. Particularly, the alloying shell may bring the advantage that we can adjust its components and sizes to achieve the desired performance. Here, we mainly study Ni-dependent electric stability and opto-electrical performances of Cu@CuNi NW electrodes. And we find that the increase of nickel content has little effect on optical performance, but effectively improves the stability of Cu@CuNi NW electrodes. We can also achieve ideal performance through regulating the nickel content and outstanding performance may come from the particular structure. Hence we studied Ni-dependent microstructure variations of Cu@CuNi NWs with the corresponding properties. The high stability NWs with a high nickel content have smooth CuNi alloying shells which effectively protect the NWs from oxidation. At the same time, the large length diameter ratio and high degree of crystallinity of Cu@CuNi NWs are the reasons for good transparent conductive properties. These demonstrations of controlling the composition of alloying shells for oxidation resistance of the NWs could bring forth great opportunities for transparent, flexible, stretchable, and wearable electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction in aqueous media represents a crucial route for solar-to-fuel conversion using water as the proton source. However, selectively driving multi-electron CO 2 reduction over the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains challenging due to the complex proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions. Here, a hydrothermal approach is designed with in situ alkalization to anchor robust CuNi dual-atom sites on antioxidative hydroxyl-rich Ti 3 C 2 (OH) x MXene. The resulting Cu 1 Ni 1 /Ti 3 C 2 (OH) x catalyst achieves a high CO yield of 635.8 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 with 99.7 % selectivity and superior cycling stability, outperforming most reported MXene-based and diatomic-site catalysts. In situ spectroscopy and theoretical calculations reveal that Cu sites promote *COOH/*H formation and CO desorption, while Ni sites favor *COOH-to-*CO conversion and enhance water adsorption. This dual-atom synergy precisely regulates PCET at adjacent Cu and Ni sites, enabling HER suppression and enhanced CO generation. This work establishes a new paradigm for engineering stable MXene anchored dual-atom catalysts with site-specific functionalities for highly selective CO 2 photoreduction.

The strong electrostatic associations are responsible for self-assembly. • Successful construction of Ti₃C₂Tx/CuNi heterojunctions. • Enhanced sensing performance of Ti₃C₂Tx/CuNi is obtained in DA detection. • Ti₃C₂Tx/CuNi heterojunctions-based sensor is employed in real-time DA detection. The detection of dopamine (DA) with high efficiency and sensitivity is crucial to understand its involvement in various biological and pathological functions. This study presents the synthesis of a novel composite material by hybridizing layered Ti 3 C 2 T x and CuNi nanoparticles via electrostatic interactions and its application in electrochemical DA detection. The Ti 3 C 2 T x /CuNi nanocomposites were favorably synthesized through hydrothermal approach and well-characterized using different characterization techniques. The performance of this material in electrochemical sensing was subsequently investigated. The key to its efficiency lies in the synergistic interaction between the materials, Ti 3 C 2 T x facilitates rapid electron transfer, while CuNi provides numerous catalytic centers, collectively boosting electrocatalytic aptitude. The sensor demonstrates excellent performance under optimized conditions, featuring a linear concentration range of 2–250 μM, enhanced stability, sensitivity, and a low detection limit of 290 nM (S/N = 3). This research suggests that the developed sensor holds significant promise in the electrochemical detection of DA as a biomarker in real-time detection of DA in blood serum samples. Cu-based nanocatalysts hold promise for the reverse water–gas shift (RWGS) reaction. However, irreversible sintering of the Cu catalyst for deactivation remains a persistent challenge under thermal or photothermal processes. In this study, we develop an anti-sintering catalyst using CuNiMgAl layered-double-hydroxide (LDH)-derived hydroxyl engineering to anchor ultrafine CuNi nanoparticles, achieving stable photothermal RWGS conversion. For Cu 3 Ni-MA, the oxyphilic Ni dopants facilitate the formation of hydroxyl-coordinated Cu 2+ –Ni 2+ species during the calcination of LDH-derived materials; meanwhile, the Ni incorporation enhances the plasmonic effect of CuNi nanocatalysts to drive H 2 spillover for hydroxyl replenishment under light irradiation, which is diverged from conventional Cu 3 Ni alloy-based catalysts. This Cu 3 Ni-MA achieves a CO production rate of 339.8 mmol g −1 h −1 with 98% selectivity, outperforming thermal catalysis by 3.5-fold in RWGS conversion. Notably, the catalyst exhibits robust photothermal CO 2 hydrogenation stability, preserving >99% of its original activity and CO selectivity during 30 d of intermittent start–stop cycles and 280-h continuous testing. This study offers alternative perspectives for designing anti-sintering catalysts for photothermal catalytic systems by coupling dynamic hydroxyl regulation with plasmonic activation mechanisms.

Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) poses a serious threat to the structural integrity of Cu Ni alloys under marine service conditions. This study proposed a novel antibacterial peptide (Tcs) combined with Alkyl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride (ADBAC) to inhibit MIC in 90/10 Cu Ni alloy induced by Desulfovibrio ferrophilus IS5. Bacterial counts, environmental parameters analysis, surface morphological analyses, weight loss measurements, and electrochemical tests were conducted, through which the antibacterial and corrosion inhibition effects were demonstrated. The results showed that 180 ppb Peptide Tcs (180 Tcs) alone exerted almost no inhibitory effect on D. ferrophilus IS5, whereas a significant concentration-dependent enhancement was observed when Peptide Tcs was combined with 20 ppm ADBAC (20 ADBAC). Specifically, the 20 ppm ADBAC +180 ppb Peptide Tcs (20 ADBAC-180 Tcs) combination further reduced sessile bacterial counts by one order of magnitude compared to 20 ADBAC alone, while the weight loss rate and maximum pitting depth decreased by approximately 86 % and 61 %, respectively. These findings provide new insights into optimizing traditional biocide systems with small antimicrobial peptides and developing green, efficient strategies for controlling marine MIC.

The hydrolysis of ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 , AB) is an efficient strategy for high-purify hydrogen evolution . However, it is indispensable to develop a suitable catalyst because this reaction is kinetically infeasible at room temperature . In this work, we prepared a series of nano hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) supported CuNi bimetallic catalysts through a facile adsorption-chemical reduction procedure. The effects of various molar ratios of Cu to Ni and CuNi loadings on AB hydrolysis were investigated in details. Benefitting from the proper porous structure , the interesting alloy effect of Cu and Ni, as well as the synergistic effect between h-BN and CuNi, 20 wt% Cu 0.5 Ni 0.5 /h-BN displays the highest catalytic activity among the as-prepared catalysts. Apart from satisfactory durability, the corresponding hydrogen generation rate, turnover frequency at 303 K in base solution and apparent activation energy are 2437.0 mL g −1 min −1 , 6.33 min −1 and 23.02 kJ mol −1 , respectively, which are very outstanding compared with many previous results. Our work not only provides a proper non-precious metal catalyst for hydrogen generation from the hydrolysis of chemical hydrogen storage materials but also offers a facile strategy for synthesizing metallic functional materials .

The electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate, a common contaminant in surface and ground water, to the harmless nitrogen gas is a promising technology that can be potentially energy efficient and environmentally friendly. The bottleneck hindering its large-scale implementation is mainly attributed to the unsatisfactory selectivity toward the final product N 2 . To solve this challenge, a two-step strategy was applied here, in which the NO 3 − was first reduced to NH 4 + at the cathode, followed with a rapid non-electrochemical oxidation to N 2 by the ClO − generated from anodic breakpoint chlorination. Note that the formation of ClO − may be easily controlled and enhanced by the dosage of Cl − ions, the overall nitrate removal efficiency for the above process was determined by its NO 3 − to NH 4 + activity. The high-performance copper-nickel alloys embedded mesoporous carbon electrocatalysts were therefore rationally designed, which exhibited a complete conversion of NO 3 − in the absence of Cl − , and furthermore, a 100% N 2 selectivity with the addition of Cl − . Using density functional theory calculations, it was verified that the incorporation of Ni atoms into Cu interface significantly enhanced the adsorption of *NHOH and *NH 2 OH intermediates, lowering the barrier of *NOH hydrogenation to *NH 3 (NH 4 + ). Besides, the nitrogen-containing ordered mesoporous carbon support not only facilitated the synthesis of uniformly distributed CuNi nanoparticles (ca. 20 nm), but also ensured the sufficient mass and charge transfer, as well as the high durability.

Developing efficient catalysts is crucial for the chemical utilization of CO2, which would be conducive to solving both environmental issues and the resource crisis. In this work, a basalt fiber (BF)-supported CuNi catalyst was constructed for the conversion of CO2 and methanol to dimethyl carbonate (DMC). In order to optimize the surface properties of BF, the pristine BF (BF-U) was modified by HCl (BF-H) and NaOH (BF-N) solutions. The influence of the BF surface properties on the physicochemical state of CuNi and the catalytic performance of the supported CuNi/BF catalysts was systematically investigated. The results showed that the CuNi/BF-N monolithic catalyst had the best activity, and the yield of DMC reached 12.9%. SEM, XRD, and XPS characterizations exhibited that the CuNi nanoalloy particles were uniformly distributed on BF-N and possessed high Cu0/1+ and Ni0 contents. This contributed to the abundant CO2 adsorption sites, as evidenced by CO2-TPD, especially for the medium-strength CO2 adsorption sites, which was responsible for the superior catalytic activity. This study provides an efficient catalyst for the synthesis of DMC from CO2 and methanol and can serve as a reference for industrial catalyst design.
