Graphical This study reports a simple hydrothermal method for synthesizing copper oxides (CuO x ) with varied Cu + /Cu 2+ ratio. It turns out that the surface Cu + species are highly active sites for glucose electro-oxidation. The glucose electrochemical sensor using as-synthesized CuO x -FA as catalyst exhibits wide detection range with low detection limit and quick response. Detecting glucose levels in food & beverages and body fluids is crucial for health management and disease diagnosis. Developing a highly efficient and durable catalyst is essential for glucose electrochemical sensor. Herein, we reported copper oxides with tuned structure as catalyst for glucose electro-oxidation by simple hydrothermal method. Formaldehyde, trisodium citrate, and ascorbic acid were adopted as reductant for the synthesis of copper oxides. The surface structure and glucose electro-oxidation activity of as-synthesized copper oxides were carefully studied. The surface valence of copper was greatly influenced by the reductant, and the enhanced Cu + content in the surface was believed to account for the improved activity toward glucose electro-oxidation. When using formaldehyde as reductant, the resulted CuO x -FA exhibited the best activity toward glucose electro-oxidation with the detection limit as low as 0.1 µM and showed a wide linear detection range of 0.1 µM ∼ 1 mM. The CuO x -FA also showed fast response, good anti-interference ability, and excellent durability, which makes it a promising catalyst for glucose electrochemical sensor.

Among clean energy transformation devices, fuel cells have gained special attention over the past years; however, advancing appropriate non-valuable metal impetuses to halfway supplant the customary Pt/C impetus is still in progress. In this paper, we propose a specific electrocatalyst in the formula of highly-active Cu species, associated with coated carbon (Cu@C-800), for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) through post-treatment of a self-assembled precursor. The optimized catalyst Cu@C-800 showed excellent ORR performance (i.e., the onset potential was 1.00 V vs. RHE, and half-wave potential of 0.81 V vs. RHE), high stability, resistance to methanol, and high four-electron selectivity. The enhancement is attributed to the synergy between the carbon matrix and a high explicit surface region and rich Cu nano-species.

Furfuryl alcohol (FOL) is commercially available by selective hydrogenation of furfural (FAL). A variety of catalysts have been developed for such purpose, among which Cu-based catalysts show superior catalytic performance. However, copper nanoparticles with complex valence states are easy to agglomerate during hydrogenation reaction, which might have a negative influence on the catalytic performance. The carbon coating is an efficient strategy to prevent the sintering of Cu-based catalysts. Herein, a strategy based on the thermal decomposition of Cu-EDTA complex was designed to prepare carbon encapsulated Cu-based catalysts. The prepared catalysts were applied in the selective hydrogenation of FAL to FOL in the batch reactor. The results showed that a nearly quantitative conversion of FAL with a selectivity of 98.7 % towards FOL was achieved using CuO x @NC-150 (molar ratio of Cu: Na 4 EDTA·4H 2 O=2:1; obtained by oxidative activation at 150 °C) under 140 °C, 3 MPa in 4 h. The performance was comparable to that of the commercial CuCr 2 O 4 catalyst under the identical conditions. In addition, the developed carbon encapsulated Cu-based catalysts exhibited a slightly better stability than CuCr 2 O 4 catalyst in terms of FOL yield in five consecutive cycles. XPS and XAES characterizations implied that the presence of a suitable surface ratio of Cu + /(Cu + +Cu 0 ) of the prepared catalyst may contribute to the selective hydrogenation of FAL to FOL.

Diffusion is one of the most critical factors which affect the performance of porous catalysts in heterogeneous reactions. Hollow spheres with a hierarchical structure could significantly improve the mass transfer in the spherical catalyst. Therefore, preparation of such kind of microspheres is an important work in the field of inorganic synthesis. Herein, we combine microfluidic technology and electroless deposition to prepare hollow Cu and CuOx microspheres with a hierarchically porous structure. These microspheres have a controllable diameter (100–500 μm) and shell thickness (10–60 μm). Numerical simulation and experimental results indicate that the hollow structure is beneficial for the diffusion and utilization of the catalyst in heterogeneous reactions. The Cu and CuOx microspheres were used to catalyze the hydrogenation and Fenton-like reactions in a flow reactor, respectively. The conversion of all reactants can reach more than 95%, and catalysts can maintain their reactivity in long reaction times. Thus, the strategy in the present research should apply in the construction of other porous catalysts with high performance.

Developing earth-abundant catalysts for low-temperature carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation is important for next-generation emission control, particularly in industrial scenarios where precious-metal catalysts face cost and stability constraints. Here, we report an “inverse” catalyst architecture in which LaMn0.6Cu0.4O3 (LMCO) perovskite is integrated with CuOx-derived phases to form 80Cu-LMCO. The catalyst reaches a T90 of 60 °C for CO oxidation, outperforming conventional perovskite and copper oxide catalysts under comparable conditions. Unlike previously reported CuOx or perovskite catalysts, this system uses an inverse CuOx/perovskite architecture to spatially separate O2 activation from CO adsorption while coupling these processes through interfacial active-oxygen transport. In situ spectroscopy, 18O2 isotopic-exchange experiments, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further support this pathway by showing that LMCO activates oxygen and provides labile oxygen species, whereas reduced Cu-containing phases provide CO adsorption sites and mediate oxygen transfer toward interfacial Cu+ species. This active-oxygen transport pathway provides a mechanistic basis for designing robust, low-cost catalysts for low-temperature oxidation reactions.

Selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia (NH 3 -SCO) is considered an efficient and environmentally friendly technology to remove trace ammonia pollutants. The Cu-based and Ag-based catalysts have been taken as among the most promising choices for NH 3 -SCO. However, the insufficient NH 3 catalytic activity of Cu-based catalysts and poor N 2 selectivity of Ag-based catalysts restrict their commercial applications. Herein, we report a facile stepwise induced loading method to obtain anatase titania-supported Cu-Ag composite catalysts with well Cu-Ag nanoparticles dispersion and interaction. The enhanced dispersion of Cu-Ag nanoparticles promotes their interaction with TiO 2 support, improves the stability and reducibility of active sites, and finally leads to appropriate chemical states and synergy of the Cu-Ag complex active sites for improving NH 3 conversion and N 2 selectivity. The as-designed CuO x /AgO y /TiO 2 shows outstanding NH 3 -SCO low-temperature catalytic performance with a (>)99 % NH 3 conversion and 83 % N 2 selectivity under 12000 mL g -1 h −1 at 175 °C as well as satisfied long-term stability.

Supported-Au catalysts show excellent activity in CO oxidation , where the nature of the support has a significant impact on catalytic activity. In this work, a hexagonal boron nitride (BN) support with a high surface area and adequately exposed edges was obtained by the ball-milling technique. Thereafter, impregnation of the BN support with Cu(NO 3 ) 2 followed by calcination under air at 400 °C yielded a CuO-modified support. After Au loading, the obtained Au-CuO x /BN catalyst exhibited high CO oxidation activity at low temperatures with a 50% CO conversion temperature ( T 50% ) of 25 °C and a complete CO conversion temperature ( T 100% ) of 80 °C, well within the operational temperature range of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. However, the CO oxidation activity of Au/BN, prepared without CuO x for comparison, was found to be relatively low. Our study reveals that BN alone disperses both Cu and Au nanoparticles well. However, Au nanoparticles on the surface of BN in the absence of CuO species tend to aggregate upon CO oxidation reactions. Conversely, Au nanoparticles supported on the surface of CuO-modified BN remain small with an average size of ∼2.0 nm before and after CO oxidation. Moreover, electron transfer between Au and Cu species possibly favors the stabilization of highly dispersed Au nanoparticles on the BN surface and also enhances CO adsorption. Thus, our results demonstrate that thermally stable and conductive CuO-modified BN is an excellent support for the preparation of highly dispersed and stable Au catalysts.

A synergy between FeO X and CuO X was confirmed in FeCuO X /TiO 2 -hBN composites for selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH 3 . Accordingly, the reducibility of composites was modified to promote the NO to NO 2 oxidation but suppress the NH 3 to NO over oxidation, which is of benefit to the NO reduction. Also the optimal operation temperature could be controlled by tuning the Fe:Cu atomic ratio, and Fe 10 Ti 85 BN 5 , Fe 7.5 Cu 2.5 Ti 85 BN 5 and Fe 2.5 Cu 7.5 Ti 85 BN 5 achieved the best NO removal above 90% at 375 °C, 300 °C and 250 °C, respectively. From the NO 2 and NH 3 adsorption behaviors over FeCuO X /TiO 2 -hBN, the reaction followed Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism below 275 °C, but followed Eley–Rideal mechanism above 350 °C. The influence of SO 2 on NO removal was found to be temperature dependent, at temperature below 325 °C, slight deactivation was observed, while a promotion was achieved above 350 °C.

MOF derivative (Zr (0.9)/CuO x (400)) had excellent denitrification activity, N 2 selectivity and stability. • Systematically revealed the regulation mechanism of Zr doping on the Cu 2+ /Cu + ratio and acid balance. • Proved that Zr doping could act as sacrificial sites to greatly improve the H 2 O and SO 2 resistance of the catalyst. Zr/CuO x composite were synthesized by hot-solvent and calcination method using metal-organic framework (MOF) as the precursor, and were applied for selective catalytic reduction of NO x with NH 3 (NH 3 -SCR). The effects of Zr/Cu molar ratio, calcination temperature and time on catalyst activity and the physicochemical properties of the composites were systematically investigated. The results showed that Zr/CuO x composite revealed a favorable denitrification activity, stability and resistance to sulfur and water while Zr/Cu molar ratio was 0.9 and calcination temperature was 400 °C. When the NO concentration of 500 ppm and gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 35,000 h -1 , NO conversion efficiency was achieved 100% and over 94% N 2 selectivity at 275–375 °C. In the presence of 100 ppm SO 2 and 10 vol% H 2 O, the NO conversion of Zr (0.9)/CuO x (400) approached 92%. The enhanced activity was attributed to a synergistic Zr/Cu interaction that optimized the surface Cu 2+ /Cu + redox couple, enriched Cu + sites, and thereby accelerated the low-temperature “fast” SCR pathway. Moreover, doping Zr generated a larger number of well-dispersed acid sites and maintained strong reducibility across a broad temperature range, collectively providing favorable conditions for the NH 3 -SCR. The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NitrRR) to ammonia offers a sustainable approach for wastewater treatment and value-added chemical synthesis. However, its practical application is hindered by sluggish kinetics and low selectivity, stemming from complex proton–electron transfer processes. Herein, we report an in situ electrochemical reconstruction strategy to construct a CuOx–BTA heterojunction catalyst, where CuOx species are controllably derived from a Cu-based metal–organic framework (Cu–BTA) precursor. The engineered interface induces strong interfacial charge transfer from CuOx to BTA, promoting electron localization on Cu active sites and optimizing the adsorption energy of key intermediates. These structural and electronic features establish a dual-functional synergy: Cu0 sites catalyze the critical conversion of NO3− to NO2−, while Cu+ sites facilitate the subsequent reduction of NO2− to NH3. Meanwhile, the BTA ligand enhances NO3− activation and water dissociation, providing abundant *H intermediates for NH3 formation. Benefiting from this cooperative mechanism, the catalyst achieves a remarkable NH3 faradaic efficiency of 99.2% at −0.68 V vs. RHE and maintains stable performance for over 100 hours, significantly outperforming individual components (Cu–BTA, CuNPs and Cu2O). This study demonstrates the potential of electrochemical reconstruction-driven interface engineering for the rational design of high-performance cascade NitrRR catalysts.

Flexible zinc-air batteries (FZABs) hold great promise for powering next-generation wearable electronics, yet their advancement is hindered by sluggish oxygen electrocatalysis and poor cycling stability. Here, we employ a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma-assisted approach to modify CuO x /activated carbon (CuO x /AC) composite catalysts, offering a facile and scalable route to simultaneously tailor surface chemistry and nanostructure. The plasma treatment generates abundant oxygen vacancies and stabilizes mixed Cu + /Cu 2+ valence states, thereby accelerating both oxygen reduction and evolution reaction (ORR/OER) kinetics. It also produces a three-dimensional porous architecture of vertically aligned nanosheets with uniformly dispersed CuO x nanoparticles, enabling rapid electron/mass transport. When applied in FZABs, the CuO x /AC-DBD catalyst achieves a high peak power density (226 mW cm −2 ), an open-circuit voltage of 1.37 V, and remarkable cycling stability with 95% capacity retention. Compared with untreated catalysts, it exhibits a much lower charge-transfer resistance (12 Ω cm 2 ) and superior durability. This study demonstrates that DBD plasma engineering is an effective and low-cost strategy for designing high-performance bifunctional catalysts, paving the way for flexible and wearable energy storage devices.

Antibiotic contamination has already been one of hazards to aquatic environment due to the abuse of antibiotics. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are known as a kind of promising porous material for solving the environmental deterioration. In this article, the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of a series of porous copper oxide carbon materials (CuOx-C) synthesized by carbonizing Cu-BTC were compared. Due to the suitable carbonization temperature, CuOx-C-550 N, whose geometric structure was similar to Cu-BTC, possessed a multiscale pore structure containing many mesopores and partial macropores in accordance with the pore size distribution curves. More copper/copper oxides were introduced toimproving the electrochemical ability, evidence by XRD , XPS, CV and EIS characterization. Moreover, the degradation of ceftazidime (CAZ) through anodic oxidation was discussed. In AO/CuOx-C-550 N system, the effects of current, solution pH, initial CAZ concentration and Na 2 SO 4 concentration were analyzed. CAZ removal rate reached 100% within 20 min under the optimal condition and a good electrocatalytic ability with 90% CAZ removal after 20 runs indicated a good electrochemical stability of CuOx-C-550 N. Furthermore, the degradation mechanism and pathway of CAZ were proposed. The Cu(II)/Cu(I) oxidation-reduction couples on the anodic surface contribute to the efficiently selective degradation of cephalosporins for CuOx-C-550 N. Overall, this study shows a good method to design and prepare a new MOF derivative for the remediation of aquatic contamination.
