Degradation of sulfamerazine by a novel CuxO@C composite derived from Cu-MOFs under air aeration

Yong Chen,Junfeng Zhao,Lu Hu,Jing Tian,Yong Liu

Most metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are synthesized from carboxylate and metal precursors by hydrothermal process, which will consume a large amount of solvent and carboxylate. To address this issue, a new strategy for Cu-based MOFs was developed, in which the Cu-based MOFs was obtained by using abundant natural polymer (tannic acid) as one of the precursors and using high-energy ball milling to achieve a self-assembly of tannic acid and copper sulfate. Based on this strategy, a novel Cu-based MOFs derivative (Cu x O@C composite) was synthesized by high-temperature sintering of Cu-based MOFs and used for sulfamerazine (SMR) removal via O 2 activation. The BET specific surface area and average pore size of Cu x O@C composite were 110.34 m 2  g −1 and 21.06 nm, respectively, which made Cu x O@C composite had the maximum adsorption capacity ( Q max ) for SMR of 104.65 mg g −1 and favored the subsequent degradation of SMR. The results from XRD and XPS indicated that Cu x O@C composite contained a lot of Cu 0 and Cu 2 O with the sizes of 76.6 nm and 9.8 nm, respectively, which led to its high performance of O 2 activation. The removal efficiency of SMR and 90.2% TOC achieved 100% and 90.2%, respectively in the Cu x O@C/air system at initial pH of 4.0, air flow rate of 100 mL min −1 , Cu x O@C dosage of 1 g L −1 and reaction time of 30 min. Reactive species, including H 2 O 2 , OH and O 2 - radicals were detected in the Cu x O@C/air system, and OH and O 2 - were mainly responsible for the degradation of SMR.

Sulfur-bridged iron-polyphthalocyanine on CuxO/copper foam: efficient and durable electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

Xinran Chen,Yang Li,Lu Chen,Lili Cui,Zhiyu Dou,Xingquan He,Meihong Fan,Tewodros Asefa

Overall water splitting is a promising route to produce green hydrogen in a sustainable manner. However, its practical large-scale use critically requires efficient, sustainable and easy-to-operate catalysts that can drive both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the same electrolyte. In this report, we present a facile synthesis of one such electrocatalyst that is composed of amorphous sulfur-bridged iron polyphthalocyanine (FeSPPc) grown in situ on CuxO-coated Cu foam. The material is denoted as FeSPPc/CuxO/CF, where x indicates the non-stoichiometric hybrid valence states of Cu, including its +1 and +2 oxidation states. The as-generated material has unique catalytic sites, large electrochemically active surface area, and high electrical conductivity. It electrocatalyzes the HER in N2-saturated KOH electrolyte (1 M) with a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of only 38 mV. It also electrocatalyzes the OER in O2-saturated KOH solution (1 M) with 10 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of 350 mV. The material is stable while catalyzing both reactions as well. Importantly, a water electrolyzer assembled using FeSPPc/CuxO/CF as both cathode and anode electrodes in the same alkaline electrolyte requires only 1.48 V to drive the reaction with 10 mA cm−2 while remaining stable.

Efficient photocatalytic degradation of sulfamethazine by Cu-CuxO/TiO2 composites: Performance, photocatalytic mechanism and degradation pathways

Shuang Shu,Hongjun Wang,Xinyan Guo,Yan Wang,Xiaolan Zeng

In this study, a novel Cu-Cu x O/TiO 2 composite photocatalyst was synthesized using combined sol–gel and impregnation methods. Several technologies were employed to characterize the morphology, crystalline structure, optical properties, and surface composition of the as-synthesized photocatalysts . The successful preparation of the Cu-Cu x O/TiO 2 composite was confirmed with superior properties compared to pure TiO 2 and Cu-Cu x O composite. The results for the degradation experiment employing sulfamethazine (SMZ) as the target pollutant indicated that the CT9 (the theoretical molar ratio of Cu(CH 3 COO) 2 to TiO 2 was 9:1) composite exhibits the best photocatalytic performance, and the degradation rate of SMZ reaches 98.2% after 60 min of irradiation. The good repeatability of CT9 was proved by five-cycle experiments. Radicals trapping experiments indicated that superoxide radicals and holes were primary oxidative species in photocatalytic degradation of SMZ. Eleven intermediates for SMZ degradation were identified employing LC-MS technology and the possible degradation pathways were proposed. ECOSAR models were used to predict the biotoxicity of the degradation intermediates. The present research exhibits a new opportunity for the construction of Cu-Cu x O-based photocatalysts to remove contaminants from antibiotic wastewater.

CuxO-regulated multivalent Zn single-atom catalysts for selective α-C–C bond cleavage of fatty acids

Kehui Qi,Peng Lu,Xuehui Zhang,Yuxiang Liu,Yue Liu,Lu Li

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are highly regarded for their high atomic efficiency and outstanding catalytic performance. However, the stable anchoring of single atoms and the precise regulation of their multiple valence states are still challenges. To address this challenge, a structurally stable and valence-tunable multivalent zinc single-atom catalyst was successfully synthesized according to a thermodynamically-driven lattice substitution strategy. Experimental and theoretical analyses indicate that zinc single atoms precisely occupy a pair of adjacent Cu + vacancies in the Cu 2 O lattice with a spacing of approximately 2.9 Å, forming Zn-O-Cu units. This structure establishes an electron transport channel mediated by oxygen bridges, facilitating strong electron coupling between the 3d orbitals of Zn and Cu. This strong coupling results in the formation of a stable multivalent Zn δ+ (0<δ < 2) state, which is identified as the primary origin of the catalyst’s high activity. Benefiting from the unique electronic synergistic effect of the Zn-O-Cu units and the resulting promotion of oxygen vacancy formation, this catalyst enables carboxylic acid molecules to be adsorbed and activated in a bridging mode. Through this adsorption configuration, the α-C–C bond becomes polarized and significantly weakened, setting the stage for its selective cleavage. The Zn δ+ -O-Cu catalyst showed remarkable catalytic performance in the selective cleavage of the α-C–C bond in fatty acids for alkane production, achieving up to 96.89% n-C n-1 alkane selectivity. Furthermore, the Zn δ+ -O-Cu catalyst demonstrated excellent versatility across fatty acids with varying carbon chain lengths. These results demonstrate the significant promise of this strategy not only for advancing the practical utilization of biomass feedstock with high fatty acid (FA) content, but also for establishing an efficient and novel pathway toward long-chain alkane production.

Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 on Ag,S-CuxO/Cu catalyst: synergistic roles of sliver and sulfur heteroatoms

Gujie Yao,Xilai Wang,Yanyan Feng,Xiaoqing Wang,Da Jin,Xue you Wen,Zhixiang Fu,Tianxiang Guo

A promising dual-coping Ag,S-Cu x O/Cu foam electrocatalyst was synthesized for CO 2 RR. • The synergistic effect of Ag and S for CO 2 RR toward HCOOH and CH 3 OH was elucidated. • The Ag-S synergistic mechanism governing HCOOH and CH 3 OH formation was revealed. The electrochemical reduction of CO 2 into value-added fuels such as formic acid and methanol presents a promising approach to mitigating climate change, yet it is constrained by the rational design of efficient electrocatalysts and the understanding of structure-efficiency relationships. Here, a highly efficient Ag,S-Cu x O/Cu catalyst was developed via a facile in situ dual-doping strategy, incorporating Ag and S onto pre-oxidized copper foam. Comprehensive multimodal characterization (SEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, AES) and electrochemical measurements (LSV, EIS, GC, 1 H NMR) were conducted to elucidate the catalyst’s structural properties and CO 2 reduction performance. Results indicate that Ag/S dual doping synergistically enhances catalytic activity by reducing solution mass transfer resistance through improved catalyst nanostructures and expanding the electrochemical active surface area (ECSA). Ag incorporation effectively suppresses the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), while S incorporation lowers charge transfer resistance ( R ct ). Compared with the Cu x O/Cu foam catalyst, the Ag,S-Cu x O/Cu foam catalyst exhibits increased partial current densities for formic acid (HCOOH) and methanol (CH 3 OH) by 17.09 and 5.70 mA·cm −2 , respectively. Furthermore, the reaction pathways for the electrochemical conversion of CO 2 to HCOOH and CH 3 OH are systematically elucidated. This study proposes a dual-doping strategy to achieve sustainable CO 2 electroreduction and delivers fundamental insights into the external parameters that govern the selective formation of high-value products. In-situ synthesis of monodispersed CuxO heterostructure on porous carbon monolith for exceptional removal of gaseous Hg0

Liyuan Zhang,Shu Yang,Yuekun Lai,Hui Liu,Yiang Fan,Cao Liu,Haiying Wang,Liyuan Chai

Gaseous Hg 0 is one of the most deadly and hard-to-dispose pollutants. The oxidation of Hg 0 is a promising route, but the rational design and synthesis of highly efficient catalysts still remain grand challenges. Herein, CuO@Cu 2 O (or Cu x O) heterostructured nanoparticles uniformly monodispersing on porous carbon monolith were designed and successfully synthesized using oligo( m -phenylenediamine)-Cu 2+ complex as raw material. The Cu x O-carbon catalyst contains ∼28 wt% of Cu. Based on density functional theory calculation, the CuO@Cu 2 O junction interfaces can accelerate the Hg 0 oxidation by significantly reducing the energy barriers of reaction. Only 1 mg of the catalyst can catalyze the oxidation of more than 90 % of Hg 0 with [HCl] = 0.5 ppm, [O 2 ] = 6 vol%, T = 150 °C. The poisoning effect of either SO 2 or H 2 O on the catalysts is weak. Moreover, a long-term test confirmed that the Hg 0 oxidation rate can maintain more than 90 % even in the co-presence of SO 2 (5000 ppm) and H 2 O (10 vol%).

Selective Oxygen Activation to Reactive Oxygen Species on a Carbon Layer-Encapsulated CuxO Electrocatalyst for Water Purification

Jun Zhang,Gong Zhang,Huachun Lan,Huijuan Liu,Jiuhui Qu

In situ synthesis of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on demand via oxygen activation (OA) is significant in biological, chemical, and environmental fields. Thus, the design of OA catalysts with adequate reactivity, durability, and selectivity is critical but challenging. Here, we report a CuxO@C core@shell photoelectrode prepared by encapsulating Cu/Cu2O/CuO into a carbon layer through anodic electropolymerization (electrophoresis-coupled self-assembly of carbon quantum dots). Theoretical prediction and experiments indicate that the carbon layer can effectively facilitate optical trapping and charge transfer, thus promoting photoelectric conversion and anti-photocorrosion performance of CuxO@C. The inner CuxO core acts as an electron reservoir and continuously injects electrons into the outer carbon layer shell, and the carbon atoms adjacent to oxygen-enriched functional groups (C–O–C and −COOH) in the electron-rich carbon layer work as the reactive sites to adsorb O2 and donate electrons to the antibonding orbital [lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (π*)] of dioxygen. Optimized adsorption and hydrogenation of the critical intermediates (*O2, *OOH, and *H2O2) and thermodynamically tunable O–O bond cleavage enable O2 being selectively reduced to the superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical via the mixed multielectron processes consisting of one- and three-electron pathways. Sulfamethoxazole, an emerging refractory organic contaminant widely present in the environment, can be effectively degraded (∼100% removal) in such an electrochemical platform, benefiting from the abundant ROS generated in situ. Our findings demonstrate an innovative strategy to develop highly efficient and selective OA catalysts for practical water purification.

Song Jie,Wan Yating,Yang Chen,Deng Qiuju,Cui Yingde,Yan Zhihong,Liu Yi

In this paper, a novel composite is constructed as a non-enzymatic hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) sensor by liquid-phase exfoliation method, which is composed of copper oxide, cuprous oxide and silver nanoparticles doped few-layer-graphene (Cu x O/Ag@FLG). Its surface morphology and composition were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photo spectroscopy (XPS), and its H 2 O 2 sensing performances include catalytic reduction and quantitative detection were studied with electrochemical methods. Our sensor had a high sensitivity of 174.5 μA mM −1  cm −2 (R 2  = 0.9978) in an extremely wide range of concentrations from 10 μM to 100 mM, a fast response (about 5 s) and a low limit of detection (S/N = 3) of 2.13 μM. The sensor exhibits outstanding selectivity in the presence of various biological interference, such as dopamine, ascorbic acid, uric acid, citric acid, etc. In addition, the constructed sensor continued 95% current responsiveness after 1 month of storage further points to its long-term stability. Last but not least, it has a good recovery rate (90.12–102.00%) in milk sold on the open market, indicating that it has broad application possibilities in the food industry and biological medicine.

Interface-Engineered CuxO@Bi2MoO6 Heterojunctions to Inhibit Piezoelectric Screening Effect and Promote Double-Nanozyme Catalysis for Antibacterial Treatment

Guiyuan Zhang,Sumei He,Junwu Wei,Pan Ran,Huan Zheng,Long He,Xiaohong Li

Sonodynamic therapy is confronted with the low acoustic efficiency of sonosensitizers, and nanozymes are accompanied by intrinsic low catalytic activity. Herein, to increase the piezopotential of N-type piezoelectric semiconductors, the P-N heterojunction is designed to inhibit the piezoelectric screening effect (PSE) and increase electron utilization efficiency to enhance nanozyme activity. P-type Cu x O nanoparticles are in situ grown on N-type piezoelectric Bi 2 MoO 6 (BMO) nanoflakes (NFs) to construct heterostructured Cu x O@BMO by interface engineering. Cu x O deposition leads to lattice distortion of BMO NFs to improve piezoelectric response, and the strong interface electric field (IEF) suppresses PSE and increases piezopotential. The nonlocal piezopotential, local IEF, and glutathione (GSH) inoculation enhances electron−hole separation and increases peroxidase (POD)-like activity of BMO and GSH oxidase (GSHOx)-like activity of Cu x O with high selectivity. The heterojunction formation causes the transfer and rearrangement of interface electrons, and the increased piezopotential accelerates electron transfer at interfaces with bacteria, thus increasing the production of reactive oxidative species and interfering with adenosine triphosphate synthesis. The heterostructured nanozymes produce abundant intracellular ·OH and achieve 4log magnitude reductions in viable bacteria and effective biofilm dispersion. This study elucidates integral mechanisms of nanozyme and acoustic catalysis and opens up a new way to synergize high piezopotential and nanozyme-catalyzed therapy.

Dual-redox cycling driven charge transfer in CuxO/CeO2 heterojunction for photocatalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate toward tetracycline degradation

Huijie Wang,Jiaxin Li,Zixiang Jiao,Xiaodan Zheng,Wei Ma,Kesheng Cao,Lingwei Xue,Fu Xu,Yang Wan,Yangyang Yang,Binrong Li,Pengwei Huo

The efficient removal of antibiotic residues such as tetracycline (TC) from water remains challenging. Research has demonstrated that heterogeneous systems utilizing photocatalysis to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) exhibit exceptional performance. However, preparing materials with strong charge transfer capabilities and stability still poses certain challenges. This study developed a Cu x O/CeO 2 heterojunction composite with abundant oxygen vacancies (O V ) for visible-light-driven activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The hierarchical flower-sphere structure of CeO 2 provides ample adsorption sites and mass transfer channels, while the synergy between the heterojunction interface and the dual redox cycles of Cu + /Cu 2+ and Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ significantly enhances visible-light absorption and accelerates the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. Femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy further confirms that the formation of the heterojunction effectively regulates the direction of carrier transfer and prolongs the charge lifetime. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that O V markedly promote the adsorption and activation of PMS. Under visible light irradiation, the system achieves a TC degradation efficiency of 99.2% within 60 min, primarily driven by sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH), with the intermediates exhibiting generally low toxicity. In addition, in-situ infrared spectroscopy (in-situ FT-IR) further confirmed the outstanding TC adsorption capacity and degradation activity of the Cu x O/CeO 2 heterojunction composite. This work provides insightful perspectives for designing efficient and stable heterojunction catalysts through defect and interface engineering for water purification.

MOFs-Derived Oxygen-Vacancy-Rich Cu-CuxO/TiO2 with Dynamic Redox Cycling for Steering Hole-Driven PMS Activation

Fukang Feng,Xiaoyu Zhang,Xinrui Han,Guangyu Wu,Weinan Xing

The efficiency of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in photocatalytic processes critically depends on the regulation of electron transfer from generation to utilization. Herein, a holistic electron transfer pathway is constructed within a metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived Cu-Cu x O/TiO 2 composite to achieve superior PMS activation. The incorporated Cu species serve as dynamic redox mediators, enabling an efficient non-photoinduced electron transfer pathway via Cu 0 &Cu n+ cycling. Simultaneously, the Cu-induced bandgap narrowing and abundant oxygen vacancies significantly enhance visible-light absorption and facilitate the rapid trapping of photogenerated electrons. This synergy establishes a continuous and highly efficient electron transfer from photoexcitation to catalytic reaction. The optimized catalyst Cu-Cu x O/TiO 2 -2 delivers an exceptional tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) degradation rate constant of 38.26 × 10 −3 min −1 , representing a 2.04-fold enhancement over pristine TiO 2 (18.74 × 10 −3 min −1 ). Mechanistic studies confirm that the radical ( • OH/ • SO 4 − ) and non-radical (h⁺) pathways function synergistically in the Cu-Cu x O/TiO 2 -2/PMS system, collectively enabling highly efficient TC degradation. Three plausible degradation routes are proposed based on intermediates identification and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, economic analysis is conducted to transition from mechanistic insight to practical value, assessing the commercial potential of the Cu-Cu x O/TiO 2 -2/PMS photodegradation system. This work provides valuable insights into the design of efficient composite catalysts through regulated electron transfer via dynamic redox cycling coupled with oxygen vacancy engineering.
