The discharge of recalcitrant and persistent organic pollutants into the environment and subsequent adverse impacts on the ecosystem has aroused a great concern all over the world. In this study, dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) non-thermal plasma was employed to eliminate bisphenol A (BPA). The influences of several vital experimental parameters, including discharge voltage, initial pH of solution, and rate of water flow on degradation of BPA, were explored in detail. In addition, the real wastewater from pharmaceutical factory was utilized to test the oxidation performance of DBD system. 96.8% chemical oxygen demand removal was achieved using DBD system. Radical quenching experiment as well as electron paramagnetic resonance test demonstrated that • OH was the main reactive oxygen species for the degradation of BPA. Moreover, eight major BPA degradation intermediates were identified by UPLC-MS. Ultimately, based on the UPLC-MS test results, a possible degradation pathway of BPA was proposed.

In the renewable energy-driven “green electricity–green hydrogen–green ammonia” pathway, the development of low-temperature and low-energy-consumption ammonia synthesis technologies is of great significance. In this work, a plasma-catalytic ammonia synthesis system was established using a coaxial dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. The effects of different catalysts, including Ag, Cu, γ-Al2O3, BaTiO3and Co/BaTiO3, Ni/BaTiO3on ammonia synthesis performance were systematically investigated. The reaction process was analyzed using voltage–current waveforms, Lissajous figures, and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The results show that different catalytic systems have a significant influence on ammonia synthesis performance, with the promotional effect ranked as follows: Ni/BaTiO3> Co/BaTiO3> BaTiO3> Ag > γ-Al2O3> Cu. Among them, Ni/BaTiO3exhibited the best performance. Under the conditions of N2:H2= 1:1 and a gas flow rate of 2.5 L/min, the NH3synthesis rate reached 259.48 μmol/min, and the maximum energy efficiency reached 1.40 g-NH3/kWh. Catalyst characterization results indicate that the BaTiO3support maintained a stable crystal structure, while the loaded metal species were highly dispersed and uniformly distributed on the support surface, which is beneficial for the adsorption and conversion of reactive species on the catalyst surface. Discharge characteristic analysis shows that the introduction of BaTiO3enhanced the local electric field and improved the uniformity of micro-discharges, while the further incorporation of metal active components strengthened the micro-discharge behavior. OES results reveal that the intensities of characteristic emission lines, such as NH, N2+, and Hα, were significantly enhanced in the Ni/BaTiO3system, facilitating the formation and conversion of NHxintermediates. The superior performance of Ni/BaTiO3is attributed to the coupling between BaTiO3-induced dielectric enhancement and Ni-promoted surface hydrogenation and NH3desorption. This work provides mechanistic insight into catalyst-dependent DBD plasma-catalytic ammonia synthesis and offers an experimental basis for the further optimization of plasma-based ammonia production.

Nickel oxide and pyrite (NiO/Pyr) composites were prepared by impregnation method and employed in the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) catalytic removal of gaseous styrene. The properties of the NiO/Pyr composites were characterized systematically. The removal efficiencies of styrene and energy yields had been examined as a function of initial concentration of styrene, gas flow rates and input powers. The results showed that the NiO/Pyr composite had excellent catalytic performance in DBD removal of gaseous styrene while mass ratio of NiO and Pyr was 0.2 and calcined temperature was 500 °C. When the initial concentration of styrene was 240 mg m −3 , DBD combined with the NiO/Pyr composite could improve the removal and mineralization efficiency from 89.9% to 69%–98.6% and 78.5%, respectively, as compared with bare DBD system. The possible removal pathways were proposed based on the product identification by FTIR and GC-MS.

Plasma catalysis is gaining increasing interest in environmental and energy applications, such as the destruction of gas pollutants and hydrocarbon conversion. In order to further improve the application of plasma catalysis, it is crucial to understand the fundamental mechanisms, especially the mutual interaction between plasma and catalyst. In this paper, a parallel-plate dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor is developed to investigate the plasma behavior and TiO 2 properties in the plasma/catalytic hybrid system. The introduction of TiO 2 thin film coated on the dielectric improves the discharge intensity, which significantly contributes to the enhancement of reactive species and charges. The energy efficiency of generating ozone in DBD/TiO 2 system has been approximately raised by 38% compared to pure DBD when the applied voltage reaches 13 kV. It is fortunately found that the discharge does not change the crystal structure of the TiO 2 , but the band gap increases from 3.13 to 3.39 eV, which has been proved to enhance the oxidizability of TiO 2 in the degradation of methyl orange experiment under UV light. The FTIR and XPS spectra also demonstrate that N element is doped into the structure of TiO 2 . These results successfully illustrate the plasma behavior and catalyst properties in plasma/catalysis hybrid system and provide reference for the optimization of the plasma catalysis process.

In this study, potential of dielectric-barrier discharge (DBD) plasma treatment (40 kV, 12 kHz at 1, 2, 3 and 4 min) to eliminate soybean agglutinin (SBA) activity was investigated in a SBA model system and soymilk. The plasma treatment decreased the SBA in the model system and hemagglutination activity was decreased by 87.31%. SDS-PAGE analysis confirmed the degradation of the SBA polypeptide chain. The multi-spectroscopic analysis revealed a two-stage structure alteration in the SBA upon exposure to the plasma treatment. Oxidation of NH-/NH 2 - at the peptide bond disrupted the hydrogen bonds and altered the secondary structure of SBA. Further oxidation of aromatic amino acid, cleavage of peptide bonds and the breakage of polypeptide led to the SBA fragmentation and complete unfolding of the protein. The SBA inactivation by the plasma treatment was confirmed in soymilk. Plasma treatment is a promising technology for the elimination of SBA in soybean product.

Conventional treatment methods struggle to effectively eliminate sulfamethoxazole (SMX) from wastewater due to its persistent aromatic structure and sulfonamide moiety, while existing advanced oxidation processes often suffer from high energy consumption and inadequate degradation pathway control. This study demonstrates an advanced approach for SMX degradation in aqueous systems through dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma technology synergistically integrated with COMSOL multiphysics simulation and particle swarm optimization-support vector machine (PSO-SVM) modeling. Computational simulations revealed that the DBD plasma generates a diffuse arc (D-A) mode electric field with Penning ionization effects, where primary reactive species formation predominantly occurs within the sheath layer. Under optimized operational parameters (input power: 50 W, pH 7, conductivity: 3.16 μS/cm, initial concentration: 10 mg/L, the carrier gas: air), the system achieved an exceptional SMX removal efficiency of 99.82 %, corresponding to a constant reaction rate of 0.3087 min −1 . The machine learning-optimized process simultaneously enhanced energy yield by 18.11 mg/kW·h and improved energy utilization efficiency by 15.11%. Notably, the system maintained robust performance (>75% SMX removal) in the presence of competing inorganic anions (NO 3 − , HCO 3 − and Cl − ). Mechanistic investigations combining DFT, EPR and UPLC-MS/MS elucidated that •OH, O 2 •− , 1 O 2 , •NO 2 and ONOOH preferentially attack the electrophilic N(4), N(7), and N(17) sites, initiating sequential diazotization and nitration pathways. Practical validation using hospital wastewater demonstrated significant removal of COD (56.17 %) and TOC (40.16 %), while effectively suppressing antimicrobial resistance genes. This work establishes PSO-SVM optimized DBD plasma as a sustainable and intelligent solution for pharmaceutical wastewater remediation.

Graphical To test the VOCs treatment performance of plasma catalysis at a pilot scale (50 m 3 /h), a novel multi-tube DBD coupled with Ag-MnO x /Al 2 O 3 was built, and the toluene (30 mg/m 3 ) removal efficiency and energy yield achieved by the system were 85.4 % and 5.2 g/kWh at the SED of 39.7 J/L, which were nearly three times as much as the single DBD. A pilot-scale multi-tube dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor coupled with a series of Mn−Ag based catalysts for VOCs abatement was set up and investigated. The DBD with 2 %Ag-MnO x /Al 2 O 3 catalyst exhibited the best performance of removal efficiency (85.4 %) and energy yield (5.2 g/kWh) of toluene at the specific energy density of 39.7 J/L, much higher than the single DBD reactor (34.9 %, 2.1 g/kWh). Moreover, the degradation efficiencies of styrene, dimethyl, ethyl acetate and xylene in the plasma catalysis system were also studied. The catalyst presented high stability during the 50 hours of toluene plasma-catalysis oxidation. Finally, the physicochemical properties of this catalyst were characterized and discussed using an energy dispersive spectrometer, X-ray diffraction patterns, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Cold plasma-induced inactivation of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) in plant-derived foods has been recognized, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. The present study aimed to elucidate the kinetics and mechanisms of PPO inactivation using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma. The PPO solution (2 mL) was treated with DBD plasma at different times. The results showed that PPO activity decreased by 70.2%, 85.7%, and 94.2% after DBD plasma exposure at 19.4, 26.4, and 32.6 W, respectively, for 3 min. The PPO inactivation curves were well fitted by the Weibull and logistic models. DBD plasma exposure resulted in a significant decrease in the intrinsic fluorescence intensity of PPO, suggesting the disruption of its tertiary structure. Circular dichroism analysis indicated that DBD plasma caused the unfolding of PPO, thereby increasing content of β-sheets and decreasing the α-helices. DBD plasma also induced the oxidative degradation and carbonylation of PPO. After DBD plasma exposure at 26.4 W for 3 min, the surface hydrophobicity of PPO decreased by 60.9%, and the sulfhydryl content declined by 31.2% ( p < 0.05). In summary, DBD plasma induced significant changes in the structure and oxidative modification of PPO, which might be responsible for the loss of its enzymatic activity.

Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) cold plasma, as a new nonthermal technology, has attracted increasing attention in pesticide degradation. In this study, DBD plasma was used to degrade carbendazim (MBC) in aqueous solution. Under the optimal conditions (160 kv, 50 Hz), MBC solution (0.5 μg/mL) was degraded by 89.04% after plasma treatment for 10 min. Four MBC degradation products were identified, one of which was a common oxidative degradation product (5-hydroxycarbendazim, m / z 208.07); the others were identified ( m / z 118.06, m / z 132.08 and m / z 104.05) to have formed by the cleavage of the benzimidazole heterocyclic ring. The degradation pathways were obtained by analysis of degradation products at different treatment times. The toxicity of the degradation products was estimated based on the survival rate of yeast, indicating much lower toxicity levels compared to that of MBC. This study provides a theoretical basis for the application of DBD plasma in the degradation of benzimidazole pesticides in foods.

s In this research, dielectric barrier discharge plasma was developed to cooperate with goethite for removing caffeine in aqueous solution. Goethite was characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The effects of input power, initial concentration and catalysts concentration on the removal efficiency of caffeine were evaluated. Furthermore, the degradation pathways of caffeine were also discussed preliminarily. In the case of caffeine concentration at 50 mg L −1 , the degradation efficiency of caffeine was improved from 41% to 94% after 24 min on the conditions of input power of 75 W by combining goethite catalysts (2.5 g L −1 ), while the energy efficiency could be enhanced 1.6–2.3 times compared to the single DBD reactor. The reaction mechanism experiments demonstrated that attack by hydroxyl radical and ozone was the main degradation process of caffeine in aqueous solution. These studies also provided a theoretical and practical basis for the application of DBD-goethite in treatment of caffeine from water.

Climate warming caused by the yearly rise of CO 2 emissions has posed a great challenge to the survival and development of human beings. In this study, the active component Ni was combined with mesoporous silica (SiO 2 ) to construct a highly dispersed Ni composite silicon-based catalyst (Ni x /Si), which was introduced into the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) system for the conversion of CO 2 . The XRD and FTIR analyses confirmed that Ni was successfully introduced into the SiO 2 carrier and the SEM results showed that the Ni elements were uniformly distributed. BET and TGA results revealed large specific surface area, stable mesoporous structure, and high thermal stability of the prepared Nix/Si. Further investigation of DBD-coupled Ni x /Si performance for CO 2 conversion showed significant variations based on different Ni loadings, with optimal CO 2 conversion rate, CO yield, and energy efficiency achieved at 3% Ni loading, which increased by 121.8%, 101.5%, and 102.4% respectively compared to the SiO 2 support. During the process of reducing CO 2 , the combination of Ni x /Si and DBD exhibited synergistic effects, with Ni 0 playing a crucial role in the CO 2 reduction. The introduction of Ni x /Si enhances charge transfer in the discharge region, improves CO 2 adsorption, and reduces the dissociation energy of CO 2 bonds. The DBD-coupled Ni x /Si developed by this study offers several advantages including low energy consumption, simple operation, and high efficiency, making it a promising solution for CO 2 treatment.

In this study, caffeic acid (CA) was degraded by electrical discharge plasma combined with Mn doped CoOOH catalyst. Doping of Mn significantly improve the catalytic activity of CoOOH. CA degradation efficiency was 75.6% with dielectric barrier discharge treatment for 10 min, and it reached 97% using CoOOH as the catalyst at the same treatment time. CA was 100% degraded with only 8 min using Mn/CoOOH as the catalyst. The introduction of Mn into the lattice of CoOOH induced the formation of oxygen vacancy , causing part of coordinate number of Co decreased from 6 to 5, and thus produces unsaturated Co to be the Lewis acid sites. Lewis acid sites (unsaturated Co) could coordinate with O 3 and H 2 O 2 and break their chemical bonds to form O and –OH. Assisting in the conversion of O 3 to ·OH was the main role of H 2 O 2 in the catalytic process. The degradation products and pathway of CA were studied by three-dimensional fluorescence, liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer and density functional theory calculations.
