Efficient Copolymerization of CO2 and Propylene Oxide via ZnGA/Zn-Co DMC Composite Catalysts: Synergistic Catalysis for High-Performance Polypropylene Carbonate

Shuqin Miao,Xiaojiong Wu,Delong Ding,Chunliang Ge,Weihua Shen,Yi Yang,Yunjin Fang

Polypropylene carbonate (PPC) is a biodegradable material derived from propylene oxide (PO) with the renewable resource CO2. In this study, PPC was prepared by the catalytic polymerization of CO2with PO using a zinc glutarate/zinc cobalt double metal cyanide (ZnGA/DMC) composite catalyst prepared from two heterogeneous catalysts, zinc glutarate (ZnGA) and zinc cobalt double metal cyanide (Zn-Co DMC). High selectivity of PPC was achieved among the polymer and propylene carbonate. The prepared PPC had high molecular weight. The thermal stability of the PPC product was obviously improved by the optimization of the reaction conditions. The catalytic effect of the composite catalyst was superior to that of individual ZnGA and Zn-Co DMC, overcoming the shortcomings of those two catalysts. And the composite catalyst also stimulated some synergistic effects between the two composites, which significantly improved the catalytic effect.

Synthesis of a composite Fe3O4@SiO2/poly(SMA-co-BA-co-BZMA-co-DMC) and evaluation of its oil-water separation performance

Yanjia Zhou,Guihong Lan,Yongqiang Liu,Songsong Xue,Bo Xu,Haiyan Qiu,Keyu Pu

To obtain a demulsification material with convenient recovery, high oil-water separation capacity, and excellent reusability, Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 core-shell particles and hydrophilic DMC were introduced into the acrylic ester-based polymer system to prepare a magnetic amphiphilic composite demulsifier, Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /poly(SMA-co-BA-co-BZMA-co-DMC) (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /PAMCs-P). The molecular structure of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /PAMCs-P was characterized using FT-IR and XPS, while the morphology was observed using SEM. Additionally, the effects of TEOS, Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 core-shell particles, and DMC dosage on the demulsification performance of the composites were discussed in detail. Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /PAMCs-P exhibited excellent demulsification, oil-water separation, and reusability properties for CTAB-toluene emulsions. Under magnetic field conditions, Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /PAMCs-P achieved saturated separation within 2 h with a separation efficiency of 97.9%. After five consecutive separations, the separation efficiency decreased to 39.1%, but it could be restored to 91.5% of the initial separation efficiency after desorption. These results indicate that Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /PAMCs-P has valuable application potential in emulsified wastewater treatment.

Ligand Engineering of UiO-66 for CO2-to-DMC Reaction: Unraveling the Role of Acidity, Defects, and Electronic Effects in Catalytic Performance

Yao Li,Zaixiao Ren,Juan Bai,Keju Sun,Ziwei Song,Shaotong Song

This study systematically investigates how organic ligand modifications—chain length adjusting and functional group incorporation—regulate the catalytic performance of UiO-66 derivatives for CO2-to-dimethyl carbonate (DMC) conversion. Through multi-technique characterization (Py-IR, TGA, FT-IR, XPS, etc.) and catalytic tests, Lewis acid/basic sites (LAS/LBS), bulk defects and electron density effects were identified as the three key factors to govern the catalytic activity. The bulk defects were believed to enhance mass transfer. Notably, MOF-801 (shortest ligand) and UiO-66-Br (electron-withdrawing-Br) achieved the highest TOFs of 0.86 h−1and 1.10 h−1, respectively. While LAS/LBS and electron-rich Zr clusters promote methanol activation, defect-enhanced mass transfer dominated over electronic effects in boosting DMC yield. These insights highlight the tunability of MOFs for CO2utilization via rational ligand design.

Fire safety and ionic conductivity of ternary electrolyte solvents (EC, DEC, and DMC) in lithium-ion batteries: experimental validation and theoretical modeling

Gu Bonwun,Kang Chankyu

In this study, the flash points and ionic conductivity of three ternary electrolyte solvents (ethylene carbonate (EC); diethyl carbonate (DEC); and dimethyl carbonate (DMC)) were investigated in lithium-ion batteries. The flash points of the solvent mixtures were experimentally measured and compared with predictions using Raoult’s law and multiple regression analysis. These results indicate that EC increases flash point temperature and ionic conductivity owing to its high dielectric constant and boiling point. In contrast, DMC has a lower flash point because of its low boiling point and high reactivity. The coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) and mean absolute error (MAE) suggest that Raoult’s law better predicts overall trends in flash points. Simultaneously, multiple regression analysis provided higher accuracy for specific mixture compositions. Additionally, the ionic conductivities of the ternary electrolyte mixtures were analyzed, demonstrating that DMC maintained high conductivity through polar conformers despite its low dielectric constant. The optimal mixture ratio of EC: DEC: DMC at 7:2:1 achieved a balance with a high flash point (55.5 °C) and high ionic conductivity (9.0 mS cm⁻ 1 ), enhancing battery safety and ionic conductivity. This study highlights the critical role of solvent composition in optimizing lithium-ion battery electrolytes for improved safety and ionic conductivity. Graphical

Fabrication and characterization of the ternary composite catalyst system of ZnGA/RET/DMC for the terpolymerization of CO2, propylene oxide and trimellitic anhydride

Ningzhang Liu,Chuanhai Gu,Qinghe Wang,Linhua Zhu,Huiqiong Yan,Qiang Lin

To achieve the poly(propylene carbonate trimellitic anhydride) (PPCTMA) with excellent performance, high molecular weight, enhanced yield and good thermal stability, the ternary composite catalyst system of zinc glutarate/rare earth ternary complex/double metal cyanide (ZnGA/RET/DMC) was proposed to perform the terpolymerization of CO2, propylene oxide and trimellitic anhydride. Since the crystallinity and surface activity point of Zn–Co DMC could significantly influence the catalytic ability, mechanical ball milling was applied to increase the surface area of the Zn–Co DMC catalyst with better surface activity point. Moreover, the ZnGA/RET/DMC composite catalytic system and polycarbonate products were comparatively evaluated by XRD, SEM, FT-IR, TGA, NMR, XPS and TEM. Experimental results showed that the ZnGA/RET/DMC composite catalyst system displayed outstanding synergistic effect on the terpolymerization of CO2, PO and TMA with better selectivity, activity, and higher molecular weight (Mw) tercopolymer than those of the individual catalyst. According to optimum reaction conditions, the Mw of PPCTMA could be up to 8.29 × 104 g mol−1, and the yield could be up to 66 gpolym/gcat. The alternating tercopolymer, PPCTMA, showed wonderful thermal stability and high decomposition temperature (TGA10% = 313 °C). A possible synergistic catalytic mechanism of the ZnGA/RET/DMC ternary composite catalyst system was also conjectured.

Synergistic promoting catalysis for DMC synthesis from CO2 with methanol via effect of ethanol on reconstructed CeO2/beta surface to balance acid-base properties

Yulin Cai,Qiao Han,Baochi Zhou,Lijun Wang,Na Sun,Yujia Wang,Zhanxu Yang

The direct conversion of CO 2 with methanol into dimethyl carbonate (DMC) has received considerable attention as the sustainable development process for conventional routes. The CeO 2 -based catalysts owing to suitable acid-base sites were regarded as the promising catalysts. However, the process has been hindered mainly due to the difficulty in simultaneously regulating the appropriate acid-base properties on CeO 2 -based catalysts, as well as thermodynamic limitations of generating by-product water. In this work, by virtue of enhancing interaction between active components and supports, the highly efficient CeO 2 /Beta catalysts (CeO 2 /Beta-E) were prepared by ethanol as impregnation solvents to DMC synthesis. Meanwhile, the synergistic promoting catalytic systems of DMC synthesis from CO 2 with methanol was proposed. On one hand, the content and electronic properties of oxygen vacancies and Ce 3 + species were regulated to achieve the balance between suitable acid and base sites by ethanol as impregnation solvents. Furthermore, the desired intermediates of bidentate carbonates derived from activated CO 2 on oxygen vacancies and consecutive methoxy species originated from methanol on Ce 3+ species could be markedly promoted by reconstructed surface acid-base properties of CeO 2 /Beta catalysts. Notably, methanol could be rapidly converted to intermediate species over CeO 2 /Beta-E catalysts, which was the crucial step for activation. On the other hand, it was revealed the nature of continuous removal of by-product water into the reaction solution phase to enhance thermodynamic driving forces over CeO 2 /Beta-E catalysts. Consequently, CeO 2 /Beta-E catalysts delivered a DMC yield of 38.4 mmol/g with > 99 % selectivity and excellent cycling stability, providing theoretical insights and practical guidance for designing efficient catalysts for DMC synthesis from CO 2 with methanol.

(Pd–CuCl2)/γ-Al2O3: a high-performance catalyst for carbonylation of methyl nitrite to dimethyl carbonate

Dong-Mei Lv,Zhong-Ning Xu,Si-Yan Peng,Zhi-Qiao Wang,Qing-Song Chen,Yumin Chen,Guo-Cong Guo

(Pd–CuCl2)/γ-Al2O3 catalyst with excellent activity and selectivity has been successfully developed for vapor-phase carbonylation of methyl nitrite to dimethyl carbonate (DMC). It has been demonstrated that Cl− is necessary for the superior selectivity (99.8%) to DMC, and that Cl− and Cu2+ have a synergetic effect. The Lewis acid sites of the γ-Al2O3 support may be suitable for vapor-phase carbonylation of methyl nitrite to DMC. Moreover, the catalytic mechanism of DMC formation on the (Pd–CuCl2)/γ-Al2O3 catalyst has been reasonably proposed based on the results of XPS and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy. The intermediate Cl–Pd(II)–COOCH3 is the key factor for the synthesis of DMC.

Photothermal catalytic synthesis of DMC from CO2 and CH3OH at atmospheric pressure: Synergistic effect of surface hydroxyl groups and oxygen vacancies on spindle-like CeO2-x

Guoqiang Zhang,Xiya Zhao,Xiushuai Guan,Xiaokun Wang,Xiaoyang Wang,Xiaochao Zhang

The light-driven conversion of CO 2 to dimethyl carbonate (DMC) represents a promising green and sustainable pathway for achieving dual-carbon goals. However, the inherent difficulty in activating CO 2 molecules results in low DMC yields when synthesizing DMC from CO 2 and methanol (CH 3 OH) under light-driven conditions. In this study, the activation of CO 2 and CH 3 OH is enhanced by modulating the number of hydroxyl groups and the concentration of oxygen vacancies on the surface of spindle-like CeO 2-x through the introduction of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Photothermal catalytic experiments show that the optimal CTAB-modified CeO 2-x achieves excellent DMC yield of 5.26 mmol·g −1 under mild conditions (0.1 MPa, 120℃). The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and CO 2 temperature-programmed desorption results demonstrate that CTAB modification increases the number of hydroxyl groups and oxygen vacancies on the CeO 2-x surface, which improves the effective activation of CO 2 to form the reactive intermediates such as *HCO 3 – and *CO 2 . Notably, the increased hydroxyl groups promote the dissociation of CH 3 OH into *CH 3 O. Meanwhile, isotopic labeling and in situ infrared characterization confirm the light-driven reaction pathway of CO 2 and CH 3 OH, involving the oxidation of CH 3 OH to *CH 2 OH via photogenerated holes, followed by rapid coupling with *CO 2 to generate the reactive intermediate (CH 3 OCOO*). These findings provide new insights into the rational design and construction of CeO 2 -based catalysts to achieve high yields of DMC under mild conditions.

One-step bulk fabrication of a CaO/carbon heterogeneous catalyst from calcium citrate for rapid synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) by transesterification of ethylene carbonate (EC)

Qiang Wei,Gang Zhang,Jie Yao,Xuejun Chen,Gongying Wang,Xiangui Yang

Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is well known as an extremely industrially valuable substance. The demand for high-efficiency synthesis of DMC has greatly driven the exploration of novel catalysts and their low-cost preparation methods. Herein, a novel method for the rapid batch preparation of CaO/carbon catalysts using calcium citrate (CaCi) was provided, and these catalysts were used to catalyze the transesterification reaction of methanol and ethylene carbonate (EC) to synthesize DMC and ethylene glycol (EG). Accordingly, the structure and properties of the catalysts were characterized using XRD, FTIR, N2 adsorption–desorption, TG, TG-IR, CO2-TPD, XPS, SEM, TEM and ICP-OES techniques. Meanwhile, the effect of various process conditions such as carbonization temperature, reaction temperature, reaction time and catalyst amount has been extensively evaluated. Under the optimal process parameters, the conversion of EC and the selectivity of DMC and EG were 81.2, 99.3 and 99.5%, while the turnover number (TON) and turnover frequency (TOF) were 54.1 and 162 h−1, respectively. Furthermore, kinetic analysis was carried out, and the value of k (reaction rate constant) was ≈0.159 mol L−1 min−1. The reusability was also investigated.

One-pot controllable synthesis of oligo(carbonate-ether) triol using a Zn-Co-DMC catalyst: the special role of trimesic acid as an initiation-transfer agent

Shunjie Liu,Yusheng Qin,Xuesi Chen,Xianhong Wang,Fosong Wang

A one-pot synthesis of oligo(carbonate-ether) triol was realized by the copolymerization of CO2 and propylene oxide (PO) using a zinc-cobalt double metal cyanide (Zn-Co-DMC) catalyst in the presence of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic (trimesic) acid (TMA). The catalytic activity ranged from 0.3 to 1.0 kg g−1 DMC under various copolymerization conditions. The structure of the oligo(carbonate-ether) triol was clearly confirmed, providing sound evidence for the special role played by the TMA, i.e., that it acted as an initiation-transfer agent. In the first stage the TMA initiated PO homo-polymerization to afford oligo-ether triol via a core-first approach in the presence of Zn-Co-DMC. After all of the TMA was consumed, the in situ formed oligo-ether triol acted as new chain transfer agent to participate in the copolymerization, forming carbonate-ether segments and therefore the oligo(carbonate-ether) triol. Since every molecule of TMA participated in initiation and propagation steps, the molecular weight of the triol depended on the amount of TMA used rather than the amount of Zn-Co-DMC. Consequently, the number average molecular weight (Mn) of the oligo(carbonate-ether) triol could be well controlled from 1400 to 3800 g mol−1 with a relatively narrow polydispersity index (PDI) (1.15–1.45), and its carbonate unit content (CU) could be adjusted between 20% and 54%.

Light-activatable dual prodrug polymer nanoparticle for precise synergistic chemotherapy guided by drug-mediated computed tomography imaging

Zigui Wang,Gaizhen Kuang,Zhiqiang Yu,Aimin Li,Dongfang Zhou,Yubin Huang

The synergistic efficacy and clinical application of light-responsive polymeric co-delivery systems are severely restricted by uncontrollable/imprecise drug loading, release, and adverse effects caused by the introduction of additional light-responsive molecules or contrast agents when diagnostic imaging is applied to guide therapy. Here, we report the design of a light-activatable dual prodrug polymer nanoparticle (DPP NP) for precise synergistic chemotherapy guided by drug-mediated computed tomography (DMCT) imaging without the introduction of any additional diagnostic imaging agent. DPP NP enables visible light-triggered prodrug polymer backbone cleavage and bioactive Pt(II) release in cancer cell/tumor site; the light-cleaved polymer fragments are further hydrolyzed to produce demethyl cantharidin (DMC). Notably, the drug loading ratio of Pt(IV) and DMC in DPP NP was fixed at an optimal value to achieve maximum synergistic cancer cell killing, which was kept even after cellular uptake, thereby resulting in enhanced synergistic antitumor efficacy both in vitro and in vivo . Because of the high content of the heavy metal Pt in the polymer chain, the spatial/temporal dynamic biodistribution as well as metabolism of DPP NP in vivo can be monitored by Pt DMCT imaging to guide the light irradiation parameters for optimized light-activatable synergistic chemotherapy. Guided by Pt DMCT imaging, DPP NP was able to achieve an improved light-activatable antitumor efficacy, with 75% tumors fully cured and low toxicity. The light-activatable DDP NP system exhibits tremendous potential as precise theranostic nanomedicine . Investigation of synthesis parameters to fabricate CeO2 with a large surface and high oxygen vacancies for dramatically enhanced performance of direct DMC synthesis from CO2 and methanol

Guanling Yang,Aizhong Jia,Jingde Li,Fang Li,Yanji Wang

Hierarchically porous CeO 2 with excellent catalytic performance for direct dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO 2 and methanol was successfully prepared by a simple hydrothermal method due to the abundant oxygen vacancies (Ovs, ∼17%) and large surface area (137 m 2 ·g −1 ). The effects of template dosage as well as synthesis parameters including hydrothermal time and calcination temperature on the physicochemical properties of as-synthesized CeO 2 were studied, and the reaction conditions were investigated and optimized. The obtained results indicated that the Ovs varied with prolonging hydrothermal time and more Ovs were formed by etching due to longer crystal time. And the fabricated Ovs acting as acid sites and basic sites effectively activated CO 2 and methanol, respectively, which was further confirmed by the simulation results, however, the strong acid sites are detrimental to catalyst stability due to their strong chemical interactions with nicotinamide. And a high DMC yield of 260.12 mmol∙g −1 was obtained under the optimal reaction conditions: reaction time 5 h, initial CO 2 pressure 4.0 MPa, and reaction temperature 140 °C.
