Microscopic mechanisms for the effects of ionic strength and DOM on the adsorption and transport of cadmium in red soil

Chuanghe Miao,Yizhong Lv,Hu Zhou,Chao He,Ruigang Wang,Nan Zhao

DOM C fraction and KCl influence Cd adsorption by altering electrostatic interaction. • K⁺ competes with Cd²⁺/CdCl + for mineral sites, but not for organic functional group. • HA C has more lignin-like, condensed aromatics but less tannin-like compounds than FA C . • HA C has more electron-rich groups than FA C , boosting Cd adsorption stronger. • DOM C exhibits inadequate performance for Cd immobilization in saline red soils. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) can affect the fate of cadmium (Cd) in soils, yet the mechanisms governing its impact on the adsorption and transport of Cd under varying ionic strength remain unclear. Here, compost-derived DOM (DOM C ) was extracted and fractionated into humic acid (HA C ) and fulvic acid (FA C ) to examine their effects on the mobility of Cd in red soil at varying potassium chloride (KCl) concentrations. DOM C fractions enhanced Cd adsorption, with HA C showing a stronger effect than FA C , due to the higher abundance of lignin-like compounds and condensed aromatics in HA C . The Cd mobility in red soil in the presence of HA C exceeded that of FA C at 1 mmol/L KCl due to the stronger ability of HA C to interact with Cd. DOM C exhibited a weakening inhibitory effect on Cd mobility at elevated KCl concentrations, and the difference in inhibitory effects between HA C and FA C diminished. The effects of increasing KCl concentration on Cd mobility contrast sharply with those of DOM C and underscore the dominance of electrostatic interactions in controlling Cd mobility in the presence of DOM C . Density functional theory calculations suggested that the interacting ability of HA C with Cd was higher than that of FA C , because the number of aromatic rings, carboxyls, and hydroxyls in HA C are higher than those in FA C . K + is more likely to compete with Cd 2+ for adsorption sites on kaolinite and hematite rather than for DOM functional groups. Our findings demonstrate the combined effects of DOM C and KCl on Cd mobility and highlight that DOM C may exhibit limited effectiveness in immobilizing Cd in saline red soils. The photoactivity of complexation of DOM and Fe(Ⅱ)/Mn(Ⅱ) in aquatic system: Implication on the photodegradation of MCLR

Haishuo Wang,Xinke Tian,Zhichun Li,Jie Zhang,Shiyin Li,Heyong Huang

Lake eutrophication leads to the excessive proliferation of cyanobacteria in aquatic environments, resulting in microcystin-LR (MCLR) concentrations exceeding regulatory limits. The associated environmental risks and health concerns attract widespread attention. As one of the most active chemical substances in aquatic environments, dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a critical role in the phototransformation of MCLR. In environments where Fe(II) and Mn(II) coexist, the phototransformation process of MCLR may be influenced. Among fulvic acid (FA), humic acid (HA), cyanobacteria-derived DOM (CDOM), and reed leaf-derived DOM (RDOM), FA has the highest apparent reaction rate constant for MCLR at 0.03567   h -1 . Using isopropanol, furfuryl alcohol, and sorbic acid as quenchers, the contributions of different photochemically produced reactive intermediates(PPRIs) to MCLR photodegradation follow the order: 3 DOM⁎ > ·OH > 1 O 2 . As pH increases, changes in the conformation and charge distribution of DOM and MCLR suppress MCLR photodegradation. The addition of Fe(II) or Mn(II) enhances the photodegradation of MCLR by DOM. Electron paramagnetic resonance tests and radical quenching experiments indicate that the introduction of Fe(II)/Mn(II) increases ·OH production. The enhanced ·OH promotes MCLR photodegradation more effectively than the suppression caused by Fe(II)/Mn(II) quenching of ³DOM⁎. Product analysis reveals that demethylation, hydroxylation, decarbonylation, decarboxylation, denitration, and bond cleavage are the main pathways of MCLR photodegradation. These findings provide valuable insights into the migration and transformation of MCLR in complex environments, contributing to a deeper understanding of the fate of pollutants in natural water systems, particularly in the presence of metal ions.

The new fate of MCLR revealed by dialysis equilibrium and theoretical calculations: Influence from DOM and Fe(II)/Mn(II)

Haishuo Wang,Jie Zhang,Zhichun Li,Bin Shi,Shiyin Li,Heyong Huang

Microcystin-LR (MCLR) is a highly toxic pollutant widely distributed in eutrophic waters. The interplay between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and metal ions has been extensively reported; however, the impact of DOM-metal complexes on MCLR remains to be thoroughly studied. In this research, equilibrium dialysis was employed to study the kinetics and isotherms of MCLR adsorption by DOM, meanwhile the Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided insights into the theoretical mechanisms of Fe(II)/Mn(II) involvement in the adsorption process. The adsorption kinetics revealed that the process is physicochemical, with chemisorption being the critical factor controlling the adsorption rate. The adsorption isotherms confirmed that Fe(II) alters the spatial arrangement of adsorption sites on the superficies of DOM, with the complexes of Fe(II) and DOM from the macrophyte-dominated regions of Lake Taihu (MDR-Fe(II)) showing the uppermost adsorption capacity of 6193.965 µg/g among all combinations. The influence of different cations (K + , Ca 2+ , Na + , Mg 2+ ) on the adsorption of MCLR to DOM is divergent, with metals either reducing MCLR adsorption through competition for adsorption sites or increasing it by forming ternary complexes. The pH decrease reduced the affinity of DOM to metal ions while simultaneously enhancing MCLR adsorption through changes in its ionization state. DFT calculations demonstrated that Fe(II)/Mn(II) reduces the resistance to interaction between functional groups on DOM and MCLR, with carboxyl-Fe(II)-carboxyl interactions showing the highest binding energy (ΔG = −7.253 eV). Overall, Fe(II)/Mn(II) enhances the adsorption of MCLR via altering the structure and surface electrostatic potential distribution of DOM. This research indicates that the ultimate fate of MCLR in aquatic ecosystems is affected by DOM and metal ions.

Electron donating capacities of DOM model compounds and their relationships with chlorine demand, byproduct formation, and other properties in chlorination

Rumeng Wang,Min Ji,Hongyan Zhai,Yinxiu Liang

Electron donating capacity (EDC) is a promising parameter to characterize the antioxidant properties and oxidant consumption of dissolved organic matter (DOM). To assess the potential of EDC in rapidly predicting the chlorine demand during chlorination, the EDC values were measured for ten DOM model compounds, including phenol, quinol, resorcinol, vanillin, tannic acid, l -phenylalanine, l -tryptophan, l -tyrosine, l -cysteine, and reduced glutathione . The EDC values varied according to the functional moieties present in the model compounds and the pH. At pH 7.0, the order of EDC values of the ten model compounds was (mol e − /mol C): 0.843 (cysteine) > 0.538 (tyrosine) > 0.522 (tannic acid) > 0.516 (resorcinol) > 0.452 (phenol) ≈ 0.450 (tryptophan) > 0.257 (vanillin) > 0.226 (reduced glutathione) > 0.160 (quinol) > 0.00035 (phenylalanine). The EDC values correlated well (R 2  = 0.93) with the 24 h Cl 2 demand of the model compounds (except for phenol and tannic acid). By contrast, there was poor correlation between the EDC values and the 24 h formation potentials of chlorination byproducts (trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids and haloacetonitriles). The levels and variation of the EDC values were not significantly correlated with the total organic carbon , specific UV absorbance at 254 nm, or assimilable organic carbon of the model compounds.

Accumulation of Ag(0) Single Atoms at Water/Mineral Interfaces during Sunlight-Induced Reduction of Ionic Ag by Phenolic DOM

Haibin Li,Dan Qiao,Menghui Chu,Lirong Guo,Zhaoli Sun,Yafei Fan,Shou-Qing Ni,Chen-Ho Tung,Yifeng Wang

Silver (Ag) undergoes a complex and dynamic Ag+/Ag0 cycle under environmental conditions. The Ag+ → Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) transformation due to the combined actions of sunlight, O2, and dissolved organic matter has been a well-known environmental phenomenon. In this study, we indicate that this process may be accompanied by a pronounced accumulation of Ag(0) single atoms (Ag-SAs) on the minerals’ surfaces. According to spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and high-energy-resolution X-ray adsorption fine structure analyses, humic acid (HA) and phenol (PhOH) can induce Ag-SAs accumulation, whereas oxalic acid causes only AgNPs deposition. Ag-SAs account for more than 20 wt % of total Ag(0) on the γ-Al2O3 surfaces during HA- and PhOH-mediated photolysis processes. HA also causes Ag-SAs to accumulate on two other prevalent soil minerals, SiO2 and Fe2O3, and the fractions of Ag-SAs are about 15 wt %. Our mechanism studies suggest that a phenolic molecule acts as a reducing agent of Ag+ and a stabilizer of Ag-SAs, protecting Ag-SAs against autocatalytic nucleation.

Mechanistic insight into the role of typical microplastics in chlorination disinfection: Precursors and adsorbents of both MP-DOM and DBPs

Zhihao Yan,Hanyang Qian,Juanjuan Yao,Meng Guo,Xiong Zhao,Naiyun Gao,Zhi Zhang

Microplastics (MPs) in drinking water are predominantly < 10 µm. The leaching of MPs derived dissolved organic matters (MP-DOM) from 5 µm polypropylene MPs (PP-MPs) and polystyrene MPs (PS-MPs) and the formation of MP-DOM derived disinfection byproducts during chlorination disinfection were first investigated. Comparably, PS-MPs are more vulnerable to chlorination and the primary attacks are on para C in aromatic side-chains via electrophilic Cl-substitution and oxidation by two-electron transfer. The O/C and Cl/C ratio of polystyrene MPs was linear and exponential versus initial available Cl 2 concentrations, respectively. The significant PS-DOM leaching was observed with initial available Cl 2 of 4.0 mg/L (USEPA recommended upper dose). As the initial available Cl 2 concentration increased to 8.0 mg/L, the adsorption of chloro-phenolic-components of 200 Daltons in PS-DOM by 5 µm PS-MPs was observed for the first time. Trichloromethane (TCM) was identified as the dominant disinfection byproduct with a formation potential of 60.3 ± 7.8 and 73.7 ± 9.8 μg/mg for PS-DOM and PP-DOM, respectively. The derived TCM could adsorb onto PS-MPs followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. Extreme chlorination could reduce the maximal adsorption capacity of TCM on 5 µm PS-MPs from 196.68 ± 48.66 to 146.02 ± 32.98 μg/g. Thus, PS-MPs act as precursors and carriers of TCM in chlorination.

Efficient removal of polystyrene microplastics using a novel clay-biochar composite: An insight into effect of pH, DOM and interfering ions

Tauseef Ahmad,Sumaira Gul,Tariq Mehmood,Philippe Zinck,Fei Liu,Eric D. van Hullebusch,Yating Luo,Hui Lu,Licheng Peng

The widespread accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments highlights the urgent need for effective remediation strategies. Biochar-based adsorption has emerged as a sustainable and cost-efficient approach. In this study, a novel montmorillonite-biochar composite (MBC) was synthesized from bamboo biomass to enhance polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) removal efficiency. The synthesized adsorbents were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). These characterization techniques confirmed the successful loading of montmorillonite onto the biochar surface. The results showed that MBC exhibited a markedly higher removal efficiency (90 %) compared to pristine biochar (BC), which achieved 78 % under the same experimental conditions. SEM analysis revealed three key immobilization mechanisms—’Stuck,’ ‘Trapped,’ and ‘Entangled’—affecting PS-MPs retention on the adsorbent surface. Dissolved organic matter (humic acid), pH, and Ca 2+ concentration significantly impacted the adsorption capacity, with optimal adsorption occurring at pH 6. The maximum adsorption capacities of BC and MBC were 45.78 and 55.66 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption mechanisms of BC were mainly governed by van der Waals forces and hydrophobic interactions, whereas MBC additionally benefited from electrostatic and π–π interactions. The adsorption kinetics fitted well with pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models (R 2  > 0.94), and isotherm fitting revealed compatibility with Langmuir and Freundlich models (R 2  > 0.93). These results demonstrate that MBC is a promising material for efficient MPs removal and support the development of low-cost, environmentally friendly water treatment technologies suitable for mitigating plastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems.

Deciphering Mn(II)/peroxymonosulfate system with nitrilotriacetic acid to degrade antibiotics: Roles of Mn species and interference of protein-like DOM

Tianming Zheng,Peifang Wang,Bin Hu,Chongchong Liu,Ruoxi Zhen

Aquaculture activities discharge large amounts of antibiotics, with protein-like dissolved organic matter (DOM) coexisting in wastewater, whose impact on FF degradation remains unclear. An efficient advanced oxidation process (AOP) was established by Mn(II), nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degrading the typical aquaculture antibiotic florfenicol (FF), achieving removal efficiency of (97.38±1.02)% within 20 min primarily via Mn(V)= O , in which •OH, •SO 4 - , and 1 O 2 made minor contributions. The inhibitory effects of fishery amino acids on FF degradation followed the order: poly lysine > tryptophan > methionine > lysine. Based on electrochemical measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, tryptophan and methionine competed for PMS binding sites, with methionine being preferentially oxidized by Mn(V)= O , thereby delaying FF degradation. Primary degradation pathways involved defluorination, dechlorination, and aromatic ring hydroxylation, exhibiting a reduced toxicity. Overall, this study developed a sustainable strategy to remove typical fishery antibiotics, highlighting the critical role of Mn(V)= O and the interference mechanism of protein-like DOM.

Synergistic catalytic filtration using Co-C/PVDF blending membrane activated by peroxymonosulfate: Fouling control and DOM transformation in real textile wastewater

Di Liu,Yan Wang,Xue He,Shasha Liu,Wei Kong,Hui Zhang,Qiyao Chen,Zhenxia Song,Hai Tang

Ultrafiltration is widely employed for the advanced treatment of real textile wastewater; however, it encounters significant challenges of low separation efficiency and severe membrane fouling caused by residual organic matter (DOM) present in the conventionally treated biodegradable effluent. This study developed a blending membrane by incorporating cobalt-carbon (Co-C) nanocomposites, derived from ZIF-67, with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for synergistic filtration and peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-activated radical oxidation of real textile wastewater. The results indicate that an efficient removal of 62.9 % of total organic carbon-based DOM was achieved through online filtration-oxidation at a PMS concentration of 0.5 g/L, which is 3.7 times greater than the performance of pristine PVDF filtration. Furthermore, the system exhibited exceptional antifouling properties, evidenced by a flux recovery rate (FRR) of 71.2 % and a reduction in irreversible fouling ratio (R ir =22.7 %), attributed to the in-situ oxidative degradation of foulants. Molecular-level analysis using three-dimensional fluorescence excitation-emission matrix and fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry revealed that SO 4 •− /•OH radicals preferentially degraded aromatic DOM components. The membrane’s surface roughness reduction and loose foulant layer formation further alleviated fouling. This work provides a preliminary data for textile wastewater remediation and deepens the mechanistic understanding of catalytic membrane processes.

Comparing molecular signatures of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in four large freshwater lakes differing in hydrological connectivity to the Changjiang River

Shujun Yin,Yafang Liu,Chenhui Wei,Dongqiang Zhu

Freshwater lakes serve as active conduits for processing terrestrial dissolved organic matter (DOM), playing a crucial role in global carbon cycle . Little attention has been paid to how hydrological connectivity to a large river would affect the molecular signatures of DOM in lakes. Here, we systematically characterized and compared the molecular signatures of DOM in surface waters of four large freshwater lakes in the middle and lower Changjiang River basin that are directly connected to the river (Lake Dongting and Lake Poyang, referred to as Lake connected ) or indirectly connected to the river (Lake Chao and Lake Tai, referred to as Lake nonconnected ). The DOM in Lake connected was found to have similar total organic carbon (TOC)-normalized contents and characteristics of lignin phenols to the DOM in surface waters from the upstream Changjiang river, indicating allochthonous/terrestrial sources from riverine inputs. As indicated by the UV–vis and fluorescence analyses, the DOM in Lake connected overall had higher aromaticity and larger average molecular weight as well as stronger allochthonous feature compared to the DOM in Lake nonconnected . Consistently, the FT-ICR MS analysis revealed that the DOM in Lake connected had higher molecular diversity, higher unsaturation degree, and larger proportions of highly aromatic compounds. In contrast, the DOM in Lake nonconnected had larger proportions of lipids and peptide-like structures, but lower proportions of aromatic compounds, which could be ascribed to the enhanced autochthonous production and photodegradation due to pollution and eutrophication as well as longer water residence time. The results highlight the strong impacts of the hydrological connectivity to a large river on the molecular signatures of lake DOM. Capsule The hydrological connectivity of the lakes to the Changjiang River has strong impacts on the molecular signatures of lake DOM.

Performance of ultrafiltration-ozonation for municipal wastewater reclamation under rainstorm conditions: Impacts of DOM surge on micropollutant removal and associated risks

Wentao Li,Yue Hu,Yangang Li,Wenzhen Zhang,Mengkai Li,Jun Hu,Weiwei Ben,Zhimin Qiang

This study investigated the impacts of rainstorms on the performance of a combined ultrafiltration (UF)-ozonation (O 3 ) process for micropollutant removal and risk mitigation during municipal wastewater reclamation. Results reveal that the rainstorm triggered a substantial surge in dissolved organic matter (DOM) in secondary effluent, primarily composed of protein-like substances and terrestrial humus. Meanwhile, 12 commonly detected pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) were found at concentrations slightly lower than in normal weather, ranging from 5.0 to 545.0 ng L −1 . Following the rainstorm, the overall removals of PPCPs spanned a wide range of 14.8 %–77.7 %, where a significantly lower retention of high molecular-weight pollutants (e.g., ≥ 400 Da) was observed for UF. For the ozonation unit, the removals remained comparable, while the relative contribution of radical oxidation increased. This shift was related to the enhanced generation of HO • and/or other reactive species, driven by the enrichment of unsaturated proteins (originating from upstream sludge loss) as precursors. Higher concentrations of disinfection by-products (DBPs), reaching up to 1372.5 μg L −1 , were observed in chlorinated effluents after the rainstorm, ascribing to the elevated content of terrestrial humus persisting through the treatments. While the risks associated with PPCPs were negligible, the formed DBPs posed considerable risks to human health (with cancer risk at 10 −5 ) and aquatic ecosystem (with risk quotient up to 13.6), particularly post ozonation. These findings highlight the role of rainstorm-fueled DOM in reclaimed water quality and provide insights into ensuring reclaimed water safety under different weather conditions.

Comparison of the effect of PANI/TiO2, Dow resins and activated carbon in removing model dissolved organic matter (DOM) and phosphorus

Heyun Yang,Xing Zheng,Dou Zhang,Gang Tang,Xiaoliang Li,Hua Wu,Wei Yan,Hegang Zhi

Seven typical adsorbents were adopted to remove phosphorus and dissolved organic matter (DOM), including humic acid (HA), protein and polysaccharides from simulated wastewater (SW) and secondary effluent (SE). The corresponding adsorption behavior and mechanism were explored in this work. Results showed that the ideal optimal dosage and reaction time of seven adsorbents were 2 g/L and 300 min respectively. Three adsorbents (PANI/TiO 2 , IRA4200Cl, and IRA900Cl) were selected for the subsequent wastewater treatment because of their excellent adsorption and regeneration performance. After 10 cycles of adsorption-desorption process, the removal rates of TP and DOM could reach more than 80% for both SW and SE. The adsorption behavior on synthetic wastewater was well described by the pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich model, which meant that the adsorption of pollutants by these three adsorbents was ascribed to chemical and homogeneous adsorption. Moreover, it was found that the three selected adsorbents could selectively adsorb pollutants from wastewater through chemical adsorption , π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding and ion selectivity . All these findings revealed that the potential application of PANI/TiO 2 , IRA4200Cl, and IRA900Cl in the removal of phosphorus and DOM from SE due to their excellent thermal stability, excellent adsorption performance, and regeneration capability, among which PANI/TiO 2 exhibited the most outstanding performance among them, especially in terms of regeneration capacity.
