Multi-color electrochromism from coordination nanosheets based on a terpyridine-Fe(II) complex

Yu Kuai,Weijun Li,Yujie Dong,Wai-Yeung Wong,Shuanma Yan,Yuyu Dai,Cheng Zhang

A metal complex nanosheet was synthesized by the liquid–liquid interface self-assembly method from a star-shaped ligand of tris[4-(4′-2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridyl)-phenyl]amine in organic solvents and metal ion Fe(II) in water solution. The as-prepared nanosheet possessed excessively smooth morphology with a thickness of hundreds of nanometers. Adhering to an ITO glass, the nanosheet showed noticeable electrochromism from purplish red at 0 V to orange-yellow at 1.4 V and green at 1.6 V. Besides, the nanosheet exhibited outstanding stability with the optical contrast maintained at almost 100% of its original electrochemical activity over 500 cycles. The liquid–liquid interface self-assembly method was proven to be promising to prepare a polymeric metal complex for potential electrochromic applications.

Trichloroethene degradation by nanoscale CaO2 activated with Fe(II)/FeS: The role of FeS and the synergistic activation mechanism of Fe(II)/FeS

Yong Sun,Muhammad Danish,Meesam Ali,Ali Shan,Ming Li,Yanchen Lyu,Zhaofu Qiu,Qian Sui,Xueke Zang,Shuguang Lyu

The performance of trichloroethene (TCE) degradation was significantly improved with the addition of FeS in nanoscale calcium peroxide (nCP) environment and the enhancement of HO generation in nCP/Fe(II)/FeS system was confirmed by comparison with nCP/Fe(II) and nCP/FeS systems. The role of FeS in nCP/Fe(II)/FeS system demonstrated that the majority of reactive oxygen radicals (ROSs) was generated on the catalyst surface due to the heterogeneous reaction through FeS activated nCP in one hand, and the reductive FeS could promote TCE degradation by regenerating Fe(II) from Fe(III) in the other hand. The probe as well as scavenger test results suggested that the major ROSs was HO rather than O 2 − . Over 91.5% TCE could be degraded at the molar ratio of 2/2/4/1 of nCP/Fe(II)/FeS/TCE, in which more than 95.5% TCE was dechlorinated. The effect of surfactants on TCE degradation was evaluated. In contrast, further investigation found that BTEX removal was inhibited with the addition of FeS. In conclusion, this study revealed the well function and fundamental synergistic mechanism of FeS. Moreover, the degradation of TCE in actual groundwater confirmed that nCP/Fe(II)/FeS technique has a great advantage and potential in TCE contaminated groundwater remediation in ISCO practice.

Advantages of aeration in arsenic removal and arsenite oxidation by structural Fe(II) hydroxides in aqueous solution

Binbin Shao,Yiyi Guan,Zeyuan Tian,Xiaohong Guan,Deli Wu

Structural Fe(II) Hydroxide (SFH) was used to remove As(III) and As(V) from aerated synthetic wastewater with initially 30   mg/L As at neutral pH values. Batch experiments were performed to investigate the influence of O 2 , pH and coexisting HPO 4 2⿿ on As removal by 0.5   g (Fe)/L SFH. The results suggested that removal efficiency for As(III) and As(V) were ⿼60% and ⿼50% under anoxic conditions at initial pH 7.0 and 9.0, respectively. However, the efficiency increased to over 90% for both As(III) and As(V) under oxic conditions. The in situ mineral transformation of SFH to newly formed Fe(II/III) and FeOOH was responsible for the robust removal. As(III) removal was nearly unaffected by HPO 4 2⿿ (1.0   mM), while obviously inhibition was observed in the case of As(V). The microstructure of fresh and reacted SFH was characterized by FTIR and XPS and these results indicate that As was removed via inner-sphere complexation and precipitation. XPS studies showed that As(III) was converted to As(V) after 2   h of reaction in the pH range of 7.0⿿9.0, which is attributable to enhanced formation of Fe(IV) by the Fenton reaction during mineral transformation. In practice, results of this study suggest that aeration is advantageous to significantly enhancement of As(III) oxidation and removal with highly reactive SFH.

Fe (II)-activated persulfate oxidation effectively degrades iodoform in water: Influential factors and kinetics analysis

Zijun Dong,Feng Wang,Xiulan Song,Miao Zhang,Chengchun Jiang,Feiyun Sun,Mu Li

Iodoform (CHI 3 ) is one of the disinfection by-products (DBPs) that is formed in the pre-oxidation and disinfection processes of drinking water treatment. In this study, Fe(II)-activated persulfate oxidation (Fe 2+ /PS) was employed to degrade iodoform, the effects of initial reactants concentration, reaction parameters, kinetics model were investigated, and the underlying mechanisms of CHI 3 degradation in Fe 2+ /PS oxidation process was unveiled. The results showed that the mole ratio Fe 2+ /PS of 1:5, initial PS concentration of 15 μmmol/L, and pH of 3.0 were identified as the optimum operating parameters. In addition, a relatively higher temperature could enhance CHI 3 removal and deiodination. The kinetic model has two different reaction steps: a fast one during the first ten minutes of reaction; then followed by a much slower one. Suppression of the reaction by TBA and MeOH showed that the combined effects of SO 4 − · and ·OH contributed to the degradation of CHI 3 , but ·OH played a dominant role. The degradation pathways and the products of total liberated iodine species demonstrate that the applicability of the Fe 2+ /PS oxidation process for CHI 3 degradation. These results indicated that the Fe 2+ /PS oxidation process is an effective advanced oxidation process for CHI 3 removal in water treatment.

Pre-oxidized zerovalent iron creates reactive Fe(II) species for continuous self-driven depassivation: Implications for contaminant removal

Zimo Lou,Ludi Song,Xuanlong Zhang,Xiaofei Wen,Dong Cheng,Jianming Yu,Xinhua Xu

Exogenous ferrous ion dosing allows depassivation of aged zerovalent iron (ZVI) for industrial wastewater treatment, while sustaining the persistent existence of Fe(II) species for continuous depassivation throughout decontamination remains challenging. To tackle this dilemma, pre-oxidized microscale ZVI (poZVI bm ) is proposed via ball milling with peroxydisulfate (PDS) solids, for tailoring an “continuous self-driven depassivation” scenario with Fe 0 /Fe(II) symbiosis. The poZVI bm exhibits a 4.4 ∼ 19.0 times higher equilibrated adsorption capacity for hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) than the referenced ball milled ZVI (ZVI bm ) and other benchmarked mZVI composites (e.g. oxalated ZVI bm , sulfidized ZVI bm , and nanoscale ZVI), following a chemisorption-reduction process. It also demonstrates a 4.5 ∼ 18.7 folds faster surface area-normalized removal rate for nitrobenzene (NB) than all these counterparts, mediated by reductive transformation. Cr(VI) removal and NB reduction depend on the dissolved and surface-sorbed Fe(II), respectively, which can be optimized by regulating pre-oxidation degree of poZVI bm . The “continuous self-driven depassivation” of poZVI bm starts with the local microenvironment acidification due to the adsorption of abundant dissolvable Fe(II) over surface-located Fe(III), which drives continuous dissolution of Fe 0 core to create more reactive Fe(II), and therefore repeats the above procedure. Owing to wide pH adaptability (pH 3 ∼ 9) and impressive corrosion behavior of poZVI bm , these findings inspire the intimate integration of Fe 0 /Fe(II) component for high-efficient remediation of multicomponent industrial wastewater.

Influence of Seawater Characteristics on Antibiotic Pollutant Removal via Fe(II)-Peroxymonosulfate-Modified Clay

Yuxin Jiang,Xihua Cao,Fang Li,Xiuxian Song

Antibiotics have been identified as emerging pollutants, and they increasingly threaten the safety of mariculture; thus, effective treatment methods are urgently needed. In this study, Fe(II)-peroxymonosulfate-modified clay (Fe-PMS-MC), an effective mineral complex for harmful algal bloom control, was tested for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal from seawater. The results showed that SMX removal efficiency increased gradually from 42.3% to 100% in seawater in 6 h as the Fe-PMS-MC dose increased from 0.1 g/L to 1.0 g/L; this removal was more efficient than that in freshwater. Both an increase in temperature and the addition of inorganic anions such as Cl−, HCO3−, and SO42−improved the SMX removal efficiency; in contrast, there was no noticeable influence of a pH change from 3.0 to 9.0 or ofHeterosigma akashiwobiomass addition from 103cells/mL to 105cells/mL. Oxidation was the main mechanism for the removal of SMX by Fe-PMS-MC treatment, and the mechanisms included radical oxidation and non-radical oxidation. PMS was the key component in Fe-PMS-MC for the production of radicals, which increased with temperature. Similarly, both radical oxidation and non-radical oxidation increased when PMS was attacked by Cl−, HCO3−, and SO42−in seawater.

Opposite effects of dissolved oxygen on the removal of As(III) and As(V) by carbonate structural Fe(II)

Tian Zeyuan,Feng Yong,Guan Yiyi,Shao Binbin,Zhang Yalei,Wu Deli

Freshly prepared carbonate structural Fe(II) (CSF) was used to immobilize As(III) and As(V) in wastewater under oxic and anoxic conditions. Dissolved oxygen was found to exert opposite effects on these two arsenic species. The sorption density of As(III) was higher under oxic conditions, whereas that of As(V) was higher under anoxic conditions. X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopic analyses indicated that crystalline parasymplesite (Fe(II) 3 (AsO 4 ) 2 ·8H 2 O) was formed when As(V) was removed under anoxic conditions, while an amorphous Fe-As-containing precipitate was formed when As(III) was removed under oxic conditions. The distribution of arsenic and iron between the solution and sediments suggested that the oxidation of structural Fe(II) promoted coprecipitation process and inhibited surface complexation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analyses revealed that more As(III) was oxidized under oxic condition, which contributed to a higher sorption capacity for As(III). The formation of parasymplesite through surface complexation/precipitation was proposed to be more effective for the removal of As(V) by CSF, while As(III) was more efficiently removed through coprecipitation. Together, the results suggest that CSF may be an effective material for sequestering both As(III) and As(V). In addition, attention should be paid to the dissolved oxygen content when remediating different arsenic species.

Structural Fe(II)-induced generation of reactive oxygen species on magnetite surface for aqueous As(III) oxidation during oxygen activation

Fangyuan Meng,Hui Tong,Chunhua Feng,Ziyuan Huang,Pan Wu,Jimei Zhou,Jian Hua,Fei Wu,Chengshuai Liu

Magnetite is a reductive Fe(II)-bearing mineral, and its reduction property is considered important for degradation of contaminants in groundwater and anaerobic subsurface environments. However, the redox condition of subsurface environments frequently changes from anaerobic to aerobic owing to natural and anthropogenic disturbances, generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the interaction between Fe(II)-bearing minerals and O 2 . Despite this, the mechanism of ROS generation induced by magnetite under aerobic conditions is poorly understood, which may play a crucial role in As(III) oxidation. Herein, we found that magnetite could activate O 2 and induce the oxidative transformation of As(III) under aerobic conditions. As(III) oxidation was attributed to the ROS generated via structural Fe(II) within the magnetite octahedra oxygenation. The electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching tests confirmed that O 2 •− , H 2 O 2 , and •OH were produced by magnetite. Moreover, density function theory calculations combined with experiments demonstrated that O 2 •− was initially formed via single electron transfer from the structural Fe(II) to the adsorbed O 2 ; O 2 •− was then converted to •OH and H 2 O 2 via a series of free radical reactions. Among them, O 2 •− and H 2 O 2 were the primary ROS responsible for As(III) oxidation, accounting for approximately 52 % and 19 % of As(III) oxidation. Notably, As(III) oxidation mainly occurred on the magnetite surface, and As was immobilized further within the magnetite structure. This study provides solid evidence regarding the role of magnetite in determining the fate and transformation of As in redox-fluctuating subsurface environments.

An efficient photocatalysis-self-Fenton system based on Fe(II)-MOF/g-C3N4 for direct hydroxylation of benzene to phenol

Xu Jia,Xuetong Xu,Cong Liu,Fuying Wang,Liuxue Zhang,Shuyan Jiao,Genxing Zhu,Guomin Yu,Xiulian Wang

In order to avoid the issues causing weaknesses in the cumene method, a heterojunction catalyst based on Fe(II)-MOF/g-C3N4 was synthesized via in situ synthesis. The combination of Fe(II)-MOF and g-C3N4 was stable. With the synergistic effect of photocatalysis and the Fenton effect, the catalyst could achieve efficient direct hydroxylation of benzene to phenol. The yield and selectivity were 16.4% and 98.8% under the optimum conditions, respectively. And the catalytic activity of the heterojunction still sustained well after 5 reaction cycles. Hence, the explored photocatalysis-self-Fenton system could be applied in the field of direct hydroxylation of benzene to phenol.

Impact of Fe(II) oxidation in the presence of iron-reducing bacteria on subsequent Fe(III) bio-reduction

Rong Chen,Hui Liu,Man Tong,Lei Zhao,Peng Zhang,Deng Liu,Songhu Yuan

The interplay of Fe(II) oxidation and Fe(III) bio-reduction occurs widely in both natural and engineered redox-dynamic systems. This study aimed to unravel the impact of Fe(II) oxidation by O 2 in the presence of iron-reducing bacteria on subsequent Fe(III) bio-reduction. Mixed solutions of Fe 2+ (0.1–0.5 mM) and Shewanella oneidensis strain MR-1 (MR-1, 2.0 × 10 7  CFU/mL) at neutral pH were first exposed to laboratory air for Fe(II) oxidation and bacterial inactivation, and then the resultant Fe(III) suspensions were switched to anoxic conditions for bio-reduction by the surviving bacteria. In the oxidation step, the coexisting MR-1 was inactivated by 0.8–1.71 orders of magnitude within 60 min. In the subsequent bio-reduction step, the resultant Fe(III) was bio-reduced by the surviving MR-1. Bio-reduction of the resultant Fe(III) by the surviving MR-1 was 1.8–2.5 times faster than that of the Fe(III) that was produced from Fe 2+ oxidation without MR-1 by fresh MR-1 cells at 2.0 × 10 7  CFU/mL. Although MR-1 inactivation during Fe(II) oxidation may inhibit Fe(III) bio-reduction, the increase in bio-availability of the resultant Fe(III) and the residual reactivity of dead cells led to net enhancement of bio-reduction under the tested conditions. Lepidocrocite was the sole Fe(III) mineral that was produced from Fe 2+ oxidation without MR-1, while 19% ferrihydrite was produced from Fe 2+ oxidation in the presence of MR-1. The formation of low-crystallinity ferrihydrite accounts for the increase in bio-availability of the Fe(III) minerals. The findings of this study highlight an important but overlooked impact underlying the interplay of Fe(II) oxidation and Fe(III) bio-reduction.

Degradation of dimethyl phthalate through Fe(II)/peroxymonosulphate heightened by fulvic acid: efficiency and possible mechanism

Yi Ding,Min Zhang,Sijie Zhou,Linbei Xie,Ao Li,Ping Wang

Ferrous iron (Fe(II)) reacts with peroxymonosulphate (PMS) to form active oxidants that can degrade refractory organic pollutants. However, the conversion rate of Fe(III) to Fe(II) is slow, which limits its actual application. In the study, the effect of fulvic acid (FA) on the degradation of dimethyl phthalate (DMP) by Fe(II)/PMS was investigated. Moreover, the degradation process of DMP was predicted by the preliminary identification of active free radicals and intermediates. As expected, FA gave rise to a higher concentration of Fe(II) than that in Fe(II)/PMS to enhance the removal of DMP in Fe(II)/PMS system. The precipitate, involved in FA and iron, was an important composite to promote the degradation of DMP in the system. Also, the response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to model and optimize the degradation conditions of DMP. The highest removal efficiency (85.70%) was obtained at pH = 3.86, [PMS] = 0.96 mM, [FA] = 11.44 mg/L and [DMP] = 5 µM. The results of free radical quenching experiments and EPR showed that •OH and SO4•− were the main active radicals in this system. The degradation intermediates of DMP were monomethyl phthalate (MMP), phthalic acid and benzoic acid. Discoveries of this study had raised the current understanding of the application of FA keeping the cycles of Fe(II)/Fe(III) for peroxymonosulphate activation, which could afford valuable information for the degradation of organic pollutants by FA/Fe(II)/PMS.

In-situ formation of green rust during Fe(II) coagulation: Dual reductive and adsorptive pathways for dyeing wastewater treatment

Xian Zhao,Jia-Yi Wang,Yu-Qian Wang,Chen-Hao Cui,Xin Yan,Wei Dai,An-Ran Zhang,Zhen-Ying Zhang,Ding-Ding Tang,Yan Zhou,Qiong Qin,Ji-Wei Pang,Lu-Yan Zhang,Nan-Qi Ren,Jie Ding,Shan-Shan Yang

s Green rust (GR), a reductive iron-based mineral pivotal in soil and groundwater remediation, remains unexplored for wastewater treatment. This study reveals that high-pH-Fe(II) coagulation enables in-situ generation of stabilized GR, thereby enhancing the coagulation efficiency (> 90 % removal for diverse dyes). The formation mechanism includes three sequential stages: Initially, alkaline conditions facilitate abundant Fe(OH) 2 ; Subsequently, partial oxidation of Fe(II) by oxidants produces anoxic zones, where Fe(II)/Fe(III) co-precipitation initiates GR crystallization; Simultaneously, multivalent anions intercalate into GR interlayers, further enhancing GR stability through strong electrostatic interactions. GR-enhanced-Fe(II) coagulation demonstrates dual dyes removal mechanisms: direct reductive degradation of electrophilic moieties (e.g., azo bond) and adsorption-coprecipitation of macromolecules. Based on the mechanism insights, it is found that GR-enhanced-Fe(II) coagulation achieves unparalleled removal of both anionic and cationic dyes (nearly 100 % decolorization for 50 mg/L dye solutions) under anoxic conditions. HPLC-MS and DFT confirm GR-driven reductive cleavage of Reactive Red 2 into low-molecular-weight byproducts. Pilot and full-scale trials at a dyeing wastewater treatment plant concluded that GR-enhanced-Fe(II) coagulation achieves 53.5 % COD removal, outperforming conventional Fe(II) processes (46.5 %) under actual hydraulic and pollutant load fluctuations. This work expands coagulation theory and offers a cost-effective strategy for wastewater treatment, adaptable to diverse effluents while retaining operational simplicity.
