Platinum (Pt) is a nonrenewable mineral with limited reserves and a patchy distribution. Pt demand and consumption are growing year after year. As a result, recovering Pt from the secondary resources is critical. A new strategy for effective Pt recovery employing Fe(III)-oxalate complexes under UV and visible light irradiation is proposed in this paper. This approach can recover 98.9% of Pt in 30 min under the conditions of 365 nm UV irradiation, leaching time = 30 min, C2O42– concentration = 333.33 g/L, and H2O2 addition = 0.60 vol %. More importantly, 95.6% of Pt can also be recovered in 8 h under sunlight. The homogeneous photocatalytic reaction is rapid and efficient, and meanwhile, no strong acid, base, or volatile toxic organic solvent is required. Additionally, the iron utilized in the process may be well-recycled, solving the problem of recovery difficulty of homogeneous photocatalysts and lowering the cost of leaching. Simultaneously, the Pt complex recovered from the waste catalyst is utilized in situ to manufacture 0.1 wt % Pt/ZSM-5 catalyst, which shows the complete conversion of toluene at 200 °C and can remain stable during the long duration reaction of 1200 min. Overall, it can not only provide a new environmentally friendly technique to recycle Pt from spent catalysts but also save manufacturing cost of new catalysts.

Photonic structures constructed from colloidal nanospheres present an attractive prospect for structural coloration in an ecological manner. However, the application of structural color in the field of textile coloration is usually blocked by their uncorrelated scattered light and feeble mechanical properties. Here, a non-iridescent structural color coating with high color saturation and mechanical stability is developed by assembling PS@TA–Fe(III) core–shell nanospheres. The rough surface and low surface charge are favorable for forming amorphous colloid arrays (ACAs) by restricting the crystalline alignment during the assembly process, resulting in non-iridescent structural colors. In addition, the as-prepared structurally colored cotton fabric possesses high color saturation and mechanical stability thanks to the intense light absorption and interface adhesion of the TA–Fe(III) shell. The preparation approach of this structural color coating is facile, low-cost, and environment-friendly, showing promising applications in textile coloration and smart displays.

A facile and efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic system was constructed based on interconnected Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets arrays electrode and Fe(III) containing alkali electrolyte. The partial deposition of Fe(III) onto Ni(OH) 2 with heterostructure obviously enhanced the OER current density and reduced the overpotential, and the Fe(III) cations in electrolyte also furnished positive contribution to the catalytic reaction, the synergy between Ni(OH) 2 electrode and Fe(III) cations in electrolyte therefore substantially improved the OER catalytic efficiency with low overpotential (285 mV at current density of 50 mA cm −2 ) and obviously enhanced current density (391 mA cm −2 at 1.8 V). The current work expands our understanding on the effect of Fe(III) cations in electrolyte to OER efficiency of Ni based catalyst, and opens up a cost-effective and practical avenue to enhance the OER catalytic efficiency by introducing metal cations in alkali electrolyte.

Fe(III) chelate reduction is of great importance in the homogeneous neutral electro-Fenton (EF) process, but its reduction mechanisms with different reductive species remain unclear. In this study, the reduction mechanisms of several typical Fe(III) chelates through electron and atomic H* were investigated using experiments and density functional theory calculations. The results indicated that the electron reduction efficiencies for [Fe(III)-EDTA] − and [Fe(III)-EDDS] − chelates were 16.23 and 8.31 times higher compared to [Fe(H 2 O) 6 ] 3+ , which was featured by low E LUMO - HOMO and concentrated LUMO distribution around Fe atom. In contrast, the atomic H* reduction efficiency for [Fe(III)-HA] 3+ chelate was 10 times higher than that of electron, attributed to high chelation ability of HA and negative energy barrier of [Fe(III)-HA] 3+ reduction in the atomic H*-dominated system. Additionally, phthalocyanine (Pc) had insignificant effect on pollutant degradation efficiency in the neutral EF systems due to the lower chelate ability of Pc with Fe(III) compared to H 2 O.

The efficient removal of arsenite [As(III)] from groundwater remains a great challenge. Nanoscale oxides of Fe(III), Zr(IV), and Al(III) can selectively remove arsenic from groundwater through inner-sphere complexation. However, owing to polysilicate coatings formation on nanoparticles surface, the ubiquitous silicate exerts remarkably adverse effects on As(III) removal. Herein, we propose a new strategy to enhance silicate resistance of nanoscale oxides by embedding them inside the redox polymer host. As a proof-of-concept, the nanocomposite HFO@PS-Cl was employed to remove As(III) from silicate-containing water. The polymer host (PS-Cl) contains active chlorine to oxidize As(III) into arsenate [As(V)], and the embedded Fe(III) oxides enabling specific adsorption toward arsenic. Silicate exerts negligible effects on As(III) removal by HFO@PS-Cl in pH 3-7, but increasing the residual arsenic concentration from 49 µg/L to 166 µg/L for the solutions treated by HFO@PS-N, i.e. , the nanoscale Fe(III) oxides embedded inside the polymer host without active chlorine. During the six cyclic decontamination-regeneration assays, HFO@PS-Cl steadily reduces As(III) below 10 µg/L. As for HFO@PS-N, however, the residual arsenic increases to ~57 µg/L in the sixth run. In column mode, HFO@PS-Cl column generates >3200-bed volume (BV) clean water ([As]<10 µg/L) from the simulated As(III)-contaminated groundwater. In contrast, the values for As(V)-contaminated water and HFO@PS-N column are only ~650 BV and ~608 BV, respectively. The stoichiometric assays, XPS , and in-situ ATR-FTIR analysis demonstrate that silicate polymerization is intensively suppressed by the protons produced during As(III) oxidation, thus rendering HFO@PS-Cl with excellent silicate resistant properties.

Sulfamethazine (SMT), taken as model compound, have been exposed to a photocatalytic system driven by ultraviolet light (UV) irradiation with Fe(III) and three carboxylic acids (citric, tartaric and malic acid). The kinetic experiments, quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), species model theoretical calculation, density functional theory (DFT) and intermediates analyses, were conducted to analyze the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and underlying mechanism of Fe(III)-carboxylate complexes on photocatalytic degradation of SMT. The results indicated the complexes easily induced the degradation under UV irradiation. Enough hydroxyl radicals ( · OH) were produced and the singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) originated from the self-sensitized oxidation. An interaction among ROS, Fe(III)-carboxylate complexes and SMT was firstly proposed. The active sites and groups were characterized through Frontier electron densities (FEDs), Fourier Transform-Infrared (FTIR) and Two-dimensional correlation FTIR spectroscopy (2D-FTIR-CoS) analyses. The transformation pathway mainly included four reactions: hydroxylation, SO 2 extrusion, Smiles-type rearrangement and S-N bond cleavage. The system also had an application potential for removing SMT from practical water.

The generation process for the highly reductive carbon dioxide radical ( CO 2 − ) in the Fe(III)-oxalate system is enhanced under UV irradiation and used in nitrate (NO 3 − ) reduction with improved product selectivity to nitrogen (N 2 ). The combination of Fe(III) and residual oxalate forms Fe(III)-oxalate complexes again for an Fe(II)/Fe(III) species cycle and achieves generation of CO 2 − radical continually. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum demonstrates the existence of CO 2 − radicals in this process. Some of the important control factors, such as initial concentrations of ferric ions (Fe(III)) (0.5, 1, 2, and 3 mM), NO 3 − (14, 21, and 42 mg N/L), oxalate (3, 7, and 10 mM), and pH values (2, 3, 4, 5, and 6), are systematically assessed for NO 3 − reduction efficiency and N-species selectivity. Among all the control factors mentioned, pH is a key parameter with an important role in the NO 3 − reduction process. Excellent NO 3 − reduction efficiency (∼90 %) was achieved at pH 3 in the presence of 1 mM Fe(III) and 10 mM oxalate under UV irradiation for 120 min. High Fe(III) and oxalate concentrations promote NO 3 − removal. In addition, there was an increase in the NO 3 − removal amount with a greater initial NO 3 − concentration. About 60 % of NO 3 − can be selectively reduced to N 2 with low selectivity to NO 2 − (∼3.4 % of total N) and NH 4 + (∼15.7 % of total N). In general, the UV/Fe(III)-oxalate system provided an alternative way to improve NO 3 − removal performance and selectivity to form N 2 in water and wastewater remediation processes.

The heavy metal ion pollution has become one of the most serious environmental problems, which promotes the continuous exploration of new materials and methods to achieve efficient detection of heavy metal ions. Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) featuring the designable and functional structures and tunable luminescence properties exhibit excellent potential for the recognition and detection of heavy metal ions. Herein, a Cd(II)-based luminescence MOF {[Cd2(2F-bpdc)2(tib)]}n (NKM-103) (tib=1,3,5-tris(1-imidazolyl)benzene, 2F-H2bpdc= 3,3'-difluorobiphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid) has been designed and synthesized successfully. Derived from the characteristic of ligand with conjugated units, NKM-103 shows well fluorescence emission performance and potential as a sensor for detecting both Fe(III) cations and Cr(VI) anions (Cr2O72- and CrO42-) through turn-off effect. Moreover, NKM-103 for all three kinds of ions shows low detection limit and high selectivity.

A novel ferric chloride immobilized poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) catalyst was developed via a coordination chemistry-based approach. The pyridine moiety of poly(4-vinylpyridine) spheres functioned as the nitrogen donor to bind iron ions, as well as to decrease the amount of pyridine used in the catalytic reaction system. The monodispersed catalyst was well dispersed in the organic solvent during the catalytic procedure, taking advantage of its nanomorphology and uniform size. The catalytic activity of various monodispersed catalysts based different mass fractions of the divinylbenzene (DVB) was investigated, meanwhile the capacities of supported Fe(III) in the various catalysts were also discussed. The P4VPDVB 10% -Fe(III) catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity in the benzylic oxidation of benzylic methylenes and secondary benzylic alcohols. It was easily separated from the reaction system and reused several times without obvious degradation of catalytic activity. Moreover, leaching tests suggested that the as-synthesized P4VPDVB 10% -Fe(III) catalyst was a true heterogeneous catalyst without significant metal leaching.

β-lactam antibiotics, extensively used worldwide, pose significant risks to human health and ecological safety due to their accumulation in the environment. Recent studies have demonstrated the efficacy of transition metal-activated sulfite systems, like Fe(Ⅲ)/HSO 3 − , in removing PPCPs from water. However, research on their capability to degrade β-lactam antibiotics remains sparse. This paper evaluates the degradation of 14 types of β-lactam antibiotics in Fe(Ⅲ)/HSO 3 − system and establishes a QSAR model correlating molecular descriptors with degradation rates using the MLR method. Using cefazolin as a case study , this research predicts degradation pathways through NPA charge and Fukui function analysis, corroborated by UPLC-MS product analysis. The investigation further explores the influence of variables such as HSO 3 − dosage, substrate concentration , Fe(Ⅲ) dosage, initial pH and the presence of common seen water matrices including humic acid and bicarbonate on the degradation efficiency. Optimal conditions for cefazolin degradation in Fe(Ⅲ)/HSO 3 − system were determined to be 93.3 μM HSO 3 − , 8.12 μM Fe(Ⅲ) and an initial pH of 3.61, under which the interaction of Fe(Ⅲ) dosage with initial pH was found to significantly affect the degradation efficiency. This study not only provides a novel degradation approach for β-lactam antibiotics but also expands the theoretical application horizon of the Fe(Ⅲ)/HSO 3 − system.

Complete degradation of benzene by the Fe(III)-activated sodium percarbonate (SPC) system is demonstrated. Removal of benzene at 1.0 mM was seen within 160 min, depending on the molar ratios of SPC to Fe(III). A mechanism of benzene degradation was elaborated by free-radical probe-compound tests, free-radical scavengers tests, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, and determination of Fe(II) and H 2 O 2 concentrations. The degradation products were also identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method. The hydroxyl radical (HO ) was the leading species in charge of benzene degradation. The formation of HO was strongly dependent on the generation of the organic compound radical (R ) and superoxide anion radical (O 2 − ). Benzene degradation products included hydroxylated derivatives of benzene (phenol, hydroquinone, benzoquinone, and catechol) and aliphatic acids (oxalic and fumaric acids). The proposed degradation pathways are consistent with radical formation and identified products. The investigation of selected matrix constituents showed that the Cl − and HCO 3 − had inhibitory effects on benzene degradation. Natural organic matter (NOM) had accelerating influence in degrading benzene. The developed system was tested with groundwater samples and it was found that the Fe(III)-activated SPC has a great potential in effective remediation of benzene-contaminated groundwater while more further studies should be done for its practical application in the future because of the complex subsurface environment.

An ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) was synthesized by radical copolymerization for use in the removal of trace Fe(III) ions from Cr(III)-containing solutions. During the synthesis process, Fe(III) ions, acrylic acid and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate were employed as the template ions, functional monomer and cross-linker, respectively. The optimal mole ratio of acrylic acid to Fe(III) ions, which significantly affected the adsorption performance, was determined. The maximum static adsorption capacity of the polymer for Fe(III) ions was 114.25 mg g −1 , with a selective factor ( k ) of 492.18 and a relative selective factor ( k′ ) of 50.87 for Fe(III)/Cr(III). The Fe(III) ions removal efficiency could reach 94.43%, leading to a final Fe(III) concentration of 0.053 mg L −1 in the treated solution. After the removal process, the mass ratio of Cr(III) ions to Fe(III) ions was higher than 26, 000:1 in the solution, with an initial mass ratio of Cr(III) to Fe(III) ions of 1500:1.
