Enhanced complexation and electrostatic attraction through fabrication of amino- or hydroxyl-functionalized Fe/Ni-biochar composite for the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II)

Hai Wang,Qian Chen,Haixin Xia,Renrong Liu,Yaohong Zhang

To enhance Pb(II) and Cd(II) elimination, new composites (FeNi-RSN-(OH)(NH 2 ) and FeNi-RSN-OH) were fabricated by loading biochar with Fe-Ni nanoparticles and functionalizing biochar by amination/hydroxylation in the study. The maximum sorption capacities of both adsorbents toward Pb(II)/Cd(II) were 217.09/209.36 mg/g and 242.15/229.52 mg/g, respectively, which were 4.30–4.79 times higher than those of the raw biochar. The significantly enhanced adsorption capacity could be attributed to the increased O/N-containing groups and Fe-Ni nanoparticles on the adsorbent surface. The introduction of Fe-Ni nanoparticles and O/N-containing groups promoted the complexation and electrostatic interactions and made them playing major roles in the adsorption. Besides, ions exchange and physical adsorption played non-negligible roles in the adsorption process. Additionally, the both adsorbents exhibited favorable anti-interference ability and cycling stability. Taken together, the study revealed that the new biochar composites of FeNi-RSN-(OH)(NH 2 ) and FeNi-RSN-OH could be used as a reusable magnetic adsorbents with promising prospect in current practice for the effective remediation of heavy metals-bearing wastewater. The study not only provided a feasible design, synthesis and optimization strategy of biochar for heavy metals contaminants removal, but also realized the sustainable utilization of waste.

3D-Printed Fe-Ni Porous Framework Structures for Efficient and Recyclable Degradation of Azo Dyes in Wastewater

Li Ma,Wei-Ming Yang,Lin Xue,Jie Zhang,Ke-Xin Lin,Pei-Jian Chen,Xiang Zhang,Hai-Shun Liu

Graphical The co-catalysis of iron-nickel bimetals can not only achieve the complete degradation of organic pollutants but also continue to be recycled. The introduction of Ni enhances the reducibility of the 3D Fe 50 Ni 50 catalyst surface, promotes electron transfer, enriches the surface with Fe (II) during degradation, maintains activity, and provides a self-healing effect. Advanced oxidation processes offer a potent, eco-friendly solution for degrading organic wastewater. Creating high-activity and stability catalysts is crucial to addressing water pollution concerns. Nevertheless, due to constraints in their preparation, prevalent catalysts often lack satisfactory cyclic stability and pose challenges in recovery. This research introduces an innovative catalyst, the 3D printed Fe-Ni porous framework (3D Fe 50 Ni 50 ), characterized by its high activity, robust stability, and straightforward recovery process. The catalytic performance of 3D Fe 50 Ni 50 is attributed to the synergistic effects of its bimetallic constituents and its distinct porous architecture. Under optimal conditions, the kinetic reaction constant reaches 1.56 min −1 . It represents a 26-fold increase over commercially available Fenton's reagent ZVI powder. And the Fe 50 Ni 50 catalyst can be employed cyclically up to 132 times, maintaining a degradation efficiency of over 90% relative to its initial performance. The findings of this article suggest that incorporating Ni augments the catalyst surface's reducibility, facilitating electron transfer. This bestows the catalyst with a nice self-healing ability, ensuring sustained degradation. This investigation paves the way for the design of catalysts with heightened activity and stability and presents promising applications in wastewater treatment.

Fe-Ni bimetallic nanoparticles encapsulated into nanofibrous carbon microspheres as a catalytic nanoreactor for highly selective hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran or 2,5-dihydroxymethyltetrahydrofuran

Taimei Cai,Lihua Yao,Jieping Fan,Hailong Peng

Background The highly efficient conversion of renewable biomass-derived platform compounds to high value-added chemicals is one of the most promising solution to the current rapid consumption of fossil resources. Methods Nanofibrous and porous carbon microspheres (NPCMs) were developed from chitin biomass and used to encapsulate Fe-Ni bimetallic nanoparticles for the formation of a novel catalytic nanoreactor (Fe-Ni/NPCMs), which was then used for the selective hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran (DHMF) or 2,5-dihydroxymethyltetrahydrofuran (DHMTHF). Significant findings The NPCMs consisted of N-doped carbon nanofibers with a high surface area. The Fe-Ni bimetallic nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on the carbon nanofiber surfaces of the Fe-Ni/NPCMs, resulting in abundant catalytic sites and excellent catalytic performance. Importantly, the Fe-Ni/NPCMs showed highly-selective hydrogenation of HMF to DHMF or DHMTHF with high yields of 93.6% or 94.9% through simply modulating the reaction conditions. Increasing the zero valent iron (Fe 0 ) content in the Fe-Ni/NPCMs significantly promoted the DHMTH selectivity from HMF hydrogenation. Moreover, the Fe-Ni/NPCMs presented high stability and recyclability, and thus they are applicable to other biomass conversions . Therefore, Fe-Ni/NPCMs have promising industrial application in the production of high value-added chemicals from biomass-derived feed-stocks.

Prussian blue analogs derived Fe-Ni-P@nitrogen-doped carbon composites as sulfur host for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Cailing Song,Qianwen Jin,Wen Zhang,Chenchen Hu,Zhumabay Bakenov,Yan Zhao

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have drawn a lot of attention owing to the high theoretical capacity of 1675 mAh g −1 , environmental friendliness and relative abundance of sulfur. Nevertheless, the severe dissolution and migration of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and poor conductivity of sulfur greatly hinder the practical application of Li-S batteries. In this work, Fe-Ni-P@nitrogen-doped carbon (named as Fe-Ni-P@NC) derived from Fe-Ni Prussian blue analog (Fe-Ni PBA) was used as highly efficient sulfur host for Li-S batteries. The Fe-Ni-P particles not only enhance the adsorption of LiPSs but also effectively promote the conversion of LiPSs. In addition, the CN – of PBAs can readily generate nitrogen-doped carbon during pyrolysis, which can improve the conductivity of composites. Due to these advantages, Li-S batteries using S@Fe-Ni-P@NC composites cathodes exhibited good electrochemical performance with outstanding rate capability and stable cycling over 500 cycles with a lower capacity fading rate of 0.08% per cycle at 1 C.

Enhancing the corrosion resistance of austenitic steels in molten solar salt at 700 °C using gradient eutectic Fe-Ni-Mo alloy coatings

Sijie Liu,Renda Wang,Ping Yu,Kun Liang,Li Wang,Mengyu Gao,Yang Si,Chuang Zhu,Fangfang Ge,Bingsheng Li

In this study, molybdenum (Mo) coatings were deposited on 304 stainless steel (304SS) plates using magnetron sputtering. Subsequently, the samples were annealed at 800 °C under vacuum for varying durations to enhance adhesion strength and thermal stability. Immersion tests were conducted at 700 °C for up to 800 h. After 200 h of immersion, the weight loss of the annealed Mo-coated 304SS was significantly reduced from approximately 11 mg/cm 2 to about 0.44 mg/cm 2 . The Mo-enriched layer effectively suppressed the outward diffusion of alloy elements and facilitated the formation of Cr 2 O 3 by trapping Cr in the interdiffusion layer. Additionally, the Mo 3 Fe 3 O phase formed on the coating surface via diffusion reaction exhibited certain corrosion-resistant properties. Obvious interfaces emerged within the interdiffusion layer, and their formation mechanisms were analyzed. After four thermal cycles (with a 200-h interval), partial delamination of the Mo-enriched layer in the annealed Mo-coated 304SS was observed. This may have resulted from the substantial growth stress of Cr 2 O 3 and the significant mismatch in thermal expansion coefficient between Mo coating and 304SS.

A sandwich-configuration ratiometric electrochemical immunosensor based on dual signal amplification of NH2-GO/Fe-Ni@Ti0033C2Tx/NH2-GO/Fc@AuNPs and BPNPs/AuPt-MB for the detection of survivin

Zhiren Zhou,Lina Zou,Ping Zhang,Chunmei Li,Ye Zhu,Huanyu Ren,Zheng Li,Huiru Niu,Hao Liao,Xiaojing Zhang,Shanshan An,Fei Ren,Xiuhong Ge,Lang Cheng,Feiyan Yang,Hongzhi Pan,Shengzhong Rong,Dong Chang,Hongkun Ma

Survivin serves as a crucial biomarker for bladder cancer, so exploring the detection method is essential. Therefore, a sensitive ratiometric electrochemical immunosensor was developed. In brief, a double-layered amino graphene oxide (NH 2 -GO) sandwich enhanced by Fe-Ni@Ti 3 C 2 T x (NH 2 -GO/Fe-Ni@Ti 3 C 2 T x /NH 2 -GO) significantly amplified the detection signal. ferrocene@Au nanoparticles (Fc@AuNPs) provided a reference signal, and Ab 1 was anchored via an Au-N bond. Moreover, AuPt-methylene blue (AuPt-MB) served not only as a secondary signal but also anchored Ab 2 through Au-NH 2 and Pt-NH 2 bonds. Black phosphorus nanoplates (BPNPs) improved conductivity and provided additional binding sites for AuPt-MB. The immunosensor exhibited a broad detection range (0.001~1000   ng/mL) and a low detection limit (0.00065   ng/mL), facilitating successful survivin detection in human urine samples with promising clinical analysis applications.

Inducing efficient proton transfer through Fe/Ni@COF to promote amine-based solvent regeneration for achieving low-cost capture of CO2 from industrial flue gas

Yuchen Li,Zhen Chen,Guoxiong Zhan,Bingling Yuan,Lidong Wang,Junhua Li

Catalytic amine-based solvent regeneration with solid acid is a feasible option for reducing energy consumption of CO 2 capture, but facing crucial challenges on designing material structures and understanding reaction mechanisms. Herein, we cover the nanoscale NiFe 2 O 4 cluster with covalent organic frameworks (COFs), to prepare solid acid catalysts. The pristine chemical bonds of Ni(Fe)-O and Ni(Fe)-Ni(Fe) are substituted by Ni(Fe)-N and Ni(Fe)-N-Ni(Fe) by targeting the anchoring of NiFe 2 O 4 cluster over COFs. The created coordination state stimulates the production of Brønsted acid sites. The obtained nanomaterials achieve a considerable improvement in CO 2 desorption of up to 290.1 mmol/(min·g) at 88 °C for spent monoethanolamine (MEA) solvent, representing a substantial increase of 540% relative to traditional thermal desorption. Consequently, the energy consumption of MEA generation is reduced by approximately 58%. Intermediate species (HCO 3− , CO 3 2− , and RNHCOO − ) and reaction pathways are established by combining operando Raman spectroscopy and ex situ 13 C NMR spectrum measurements. Theoretical calculations are performed to clarify the transformation mechanism of the acid sites around Ni/Fe atoms and its intrinsic role in the adsorption equilibrium of solvent regeneration.

Biomineralization of Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria In Situ-Induced Preparation of Nano Fe2O3-Fe(Ni)S/C as High-Efficiency Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalyst

Wanqing Zhang,Jie Ying,Hongwei Liu

Transition metal-based catalysts possess high catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the preparation of high-performance OER electrocatalysts using simple strategies with a low cost still faces a major challenge. Herein, this work presents an innovative, in situ-induced preparation of the Fe 2 O 3 , FeS, and NiS nanoparticles, supported on carbon blacks (CBs) (denoted as Fe 2 O 3 -Fe(Ni)S/C) as a high-efficiency oxygen evolution electrocatalyst by employing biomineralization. Biomineralization, a simple synthesis strategy, demonstrates a huge advantage in controlling the size of the Fe 2 O 3 and Fe(Ni)S nanoparticles, as well as achieving uniform nanoparticle distribution on carbon blacks. It is found that the electrocatalyst Fe 2 O 3 -Fe(Ni)S/C-200 shows a good OER electrocatalytic activity with a small loading capacity, and it has a small overpotential and Tafel slope in 1 m KOH solution with values of 264 mV and 42 mV dec −1 , respectively, at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Additionally, it presents good electrochemical stability for over 24 h. The remarkable and robust electrocatalytic performance of Fe 2 O 3 -Fe(Ni)S/C-200 is attributed to the synergistic effect of Fe 2 O 3 , FeS, and doped-Ni species as well as its distinct 3D spherical structure. This approach indicates the promising applications of biomineralization for the bio-preparation of functional materials and energy conversion.

Modulation effect of support on active metals in the Fe-Ni based catalysts: Insight into the electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) effect in the CO-SCR reaction

Shuhao Li,Feng Wang,Derrick Ng,Simon James,Zongli Xie,Boxiong Shen

Supported catalysts have been extensively investigated and implemented in the industry due to their cost-effectiveness and promising catalytic performance. However, due to the general inert nature of the support itself, its role in the catalyst performance is often neglected and therefore not well understood despite the consideration of the physical properties of the support. This study applies the concept of electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) to explore the impact of various supports on the active metals in Fe-Ni-based catalysts for the CO-selective catalytic reduction reaction. Through density functional theory calculations and several advanced characterizations, it can be confirmed that the EMSI effect can modify the valence states of active metals and foster interaction between different active metals, thereby influencing the reactant adsorption and catalyst performance greatly. These findings highlight the significant impact of the support on the chemical states of active metals, having far-reaching implications for designing and optimizing the supported industrial catalysts.

Promoting effects of Fe-Ni alloy on co-production of H2 and carbon nanotubes during steam reforming of biomass tar over Ni-Fe/α-Al2O3

Limo He,Song Hu,Xiaofei Yin,Jun Xu,Hengda Han,Hanjian Li,Qiangqiang Ren,Sheng Su,Yi Wang,Jun Xiang

Fe-modified Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts with Fe/Ni molar ratios of 0, 0.5, 1 and 2 were prepared to promote the co-production of H 2 and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) during steam reforming of toluene as a tar model compound. After the addition of Fe, toluene conversion increased from 55.1% of Ni/Al 2 O 3 to 73.6% of F1N1A (Fe/Ni ratio of 1), and H 2 yield over F1N1A reached the maximum of more than 2000 mmol/(g-cata). Multi-walled carbon nanotubes with average diameter of 10–30 nm were generated and follow tip-growth mechanism. Compared with Ni/Al 2 O 3 , the addition of Fe remarkably increased the amount and quality of CNTs which had longer length and less tortuosity. These dual promoting effects on H 2 and CNTs after the addition of Fe were attributed to the strong interaction between Ni and Fe in Fe-Ni alloy. Fe-Ni alloy had the high activity for the decomposition performance of toluene and H 2 O to generate more H 2 and intermediates for improving the reforming reaction. Meanwhile, the high catalytic decomposition activity supplied more carbon species and the formation of Fe-Ni alloy enhanced the generation of metal carbide for promoting CNTs growth. Besides, the deposition of amorphous carbon was suppressed and the interaction between Ni particle and catalyst support was weakened after the addition of Fe, which kept the activity of catalyst and promoted the tip-growth of CNTs.

Enhanced EMW absorption properties of SiCN/Fe/Ni ceramics modified with Fe/Ni bimetal

Jie Liu,Chunmiao Liu,Yanchun Tong,Haibin Sun,Hui Peng,Mingwei Zhang,Shigang Wu,Hongying Zhang,Hongyu Gong,Zhiqin Zheng,Xue Guo,Yurun Feng

The SiCN/Fe/Ni ceramics codoped with iron acetylacetonate (FA) and nickle acetylacetonate (NA) was synthesized by polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) method in this study. The microstructure, phase composition and electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption properties of the samples were analyzed. The polarization loss and conduction loss of materials were analyzed by the direct current (DC) multimeter and the contribution rate of polarization loss was more than 94% in the whole frequency band. The results showed that C, SiC, Fe 2 Si, Ni 3 Si, γ- (Fe, Ni) and CNTs were formed after pyrolysis which provided lots of heterogeneous interface and enhanced the interfacial polarization. Meanwhile, Ni could enter the lattice of Fe and formed a unique electronic configuration, which reinforced the conductivity and stability of Fe. In addition, the in-situ generated Fe 2 Si and Ni 3 Si provided magnetic loss and conduction loss. The RL min value of SiCN/Fe/Ni-3 ceramic was −52.06 dB at 1.54 mm and the effective absorption band (EAB, RL ≤ −10 dB) reached 4.21 GHz (13.79–18 GHz, 1.43 mm).

Enhanced hydrothermal liquefaction of shale oil sludge: Exploring catalyst combinations and synergistic effects of Fe, Na2CO3, and Ni/Al2O3

Da Cui,Peng Zhang,Shuang Wu,Hon Man Luk,Yixi Wu,Bin Liu,Shuo Pan,Jingru Bai,Qing Wang,Xuehua Zhang

Oil shale has garnered significant attention as a supplementary energy source to traditional fossil fuels. In this study, we investigated the catalytic hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of shale oil sludge using three catalysts (Fe, Na 2 CO 3 , Ni/Al 2 O 3 ) and three combinations in pairs. The hydrothermal oil (HTO) yield, energy recovery (ER), and conversion rate (CR) of organic matters were comprehensively analyzed under six catalyst conditions. Both Fe + Na 2 CO 3 and Fe + Ni/Al 2 O 3 paired catalyst combinations achieved similar HTO yields of 28.43 % and 28.13 % along with ER values of 56.19 % and 57.94 % respectively. Moreover, these two groups achieved remarkably high CR values of 81.88 % and 81.02 %, respectively. The HTO from the Fe + Ni/Al 2 O 3 combination has the highest H/C ratio and the lowest O/C ratio at 1.682 and 0.032, respectively. Elemental composition, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses of HTO were conducted in this study. The HTO produced by using Fe + Ni/Al 2 O 3 exhibited the most ideal distillation distribution, with fractions below diesel accounting for up to 96.94 %. Based on the catalytic functions of Fe, Ni, and Al 2 O 3 , six potential synergistic mechanisms of Fe + Ni/Al 2 O 3 were summarized. These mechanisms highlighted Fe + Ni/Al 2 O 3 's roles in promoting compound conversion pathways in HTO, ultimately revealing the synergistic catalytic mechanism.
