Bionic Fe-N-C catalyst with abundant exposed Fe-Nx sites and enhanced mass transfer properties for efficient oxygen reduction

Guolong Lu,Xin Men,Ruoqi Tang,Zhida Wang,Hao Cui,Tongxi Zheng,Mi Wang,Haoqi Yang,Zhenning Liu

Transition metal and nitrogen co-doped carbon electrocatalysts are promising candidates to replace the precious metal platinum (Pt) in oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). Unfortunately, the electrochemical performance of existing electrocatalysts is restricted due to limited accessibility of active sites. Inspired by jellyfish tentacles, we design an efficient ORR micro-reactor called Fe-N x /HC@NWs. It features abundant exposed Fe-N x active sites dispersed on nitrogen-doped cubic carbon cages, which have a hierarchically porous and hairy structure. The accessible, atomically dispersed Fe-N x sites and the elaborate substrate architecture synergize to provide the catalyst withremarkable ORR catalytic activity, extraordinary long-term stability, and favorable methanol tolerance in an alkaline electrolyte ; overall, its performance is comparable to that of commercial carbon-supported Pt. Our synthesis is facile and controllable, paving a new avenue toward advanced non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts for energy storage and conversion .

Hierarchically Porous Fe–N–C Electrocatalysts with Accessible Fe-Nx Sites for High-Performance Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Zn-Air Batteries

Yankun Wei,Dan Wang,Jinxiang Chou,Ruopeng Li,Wenchang Wang,Naotoshi Mitsuzaki,Zhidong Chen

Abstract Developing Fe–N–C electrocatalysts with high active site utilization remains a key challenge for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), primarily because of the limited accessibility of Fe-Nx sites. Herein, a hierarchically porous Fe–N–C (HP-Fe–N–C) catalyst is constructed via a ZnO-templated strategy combined with urea-assisted secondary pyrolysis, enabling the simultaneous regulation of the pore structure and Fe-Nx site density. The ZnO template governs the formation of mesoporous architectures, and concurrently, the pyrolysis of urea releases gaseous species that facilitate the enlargement and interconnection of mesoporous channels. Notably, the balanced micromesoporous structure derived from the ZnO template facilitates efficient mass transport and enhances site accessibility, while urea regulates the nitrogen species to promote the formation of dense Fe-Nx moieties. As a result, the HP-Fe–N–C catalyst delivers a high half-wave potential of 0.90 V, along with near four-electron selectivity and excellent durability. The Zn-air battery assembled with the HP-Fe–N–C cathode achieves an open-circuit voltage of 1.52 V, a specific capacity of 745.6 mAh g–1, and favorable charge–discharge stability exceeding 800 h. This work reveals the balance between hierarchical porosity and active site density in the Fe–N–C catalyst for the high-performance ORR.

Harnessing atomically precise Fe-Nx motifs within hierarchical porous carbon-MOF matrices for next-generation ultrastable high-energy lithium–oxygen batteries

Mingyang Liu,Yinkun Gao,Shuyun Guan,Yongqing Wan,Yiman Ma,Xiaojie Xu,Peng Gao,Yongming Zhu,Xudong Li

Lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs), with ultrahigh energy density (>3500 Wh kg −1 ), are limited by synergistic degradation (Lithium peroxide (Li 2 O 2 ) passivation, kinetic polarization, mass transport issues) in conventional electrodes. This work proposes a multi-hierarchy electrode architecture combining three-dimensional ordered hierarchically porous carbon matrices (3DOH) and Fe single atoms. The 3DOH carbon, synthesized via templated ZnFe-ZIF pyrolysis, features interconnected macropores (≥200 nm) for rapid ion/oxygen transport and mesopores (2–50 nm) with atomically dispersed Fe-N x sites for bifunctional catalysis. Metal-organic framework (MOF) scaffolds enhance mechanical stability while maintaining conductivity. The design achieves 17334 mAh g −1 capacity at 200 mA g −1 (69.5% enhancement over conventional electrodes) and 132-cycle stability with minimal overpotential degradation (ΔV < 0.93 V). By synergizing macroscopic kinetics and Ångstrom-level reactivity, this architecture offers a scalable paradigm for high-energy, long-life LOBs systems. Future directions include atomic-level mechanistic studies and industrial-scale synthesis.

Pd modified by Fe-Nx confined in N-doped carbon with hierarchical mesoporous structure for the highly efficient semi-hydrogenation of phenylacetylene

Yingna Wang,Zilong Liu,Yuanpei Lan,Chaoyi Chen,Wei Zhang

The removal of small amounts of phenylacetylene from styrene is a crucial step in the production of high-quality styrene feedstocks. In the presence of a large amount of styrene and a small amount of phenylacetylene, achieving and maintaining high selectivity of styrene remains a significant challenge. In this work, a catalyst denoted as Pd 1.25 -Fe-N-C/VC was designed and synthesized with remarkably low Pd loading (the actual Pd content was 0.96 wt%). The catalyst exhibited a satisfactory selectivity for styrene (>95 %) and maintained high selectivity levels (>90 %) in the semi-hydrogenation of phenylacetylene even with prolonged reaction time. Pd nanoparticles (NPs) were well distributed and securely anchored onto the Fe-N-C/VC support with a hierarchical mesoporous structure, which obtained from the pyrolysis of a hexagonal star-like Fe-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework with vitamin C surfactant (Fe-doped ZIF/VC). The remarkable catalytic properties may be partly ascribed to the effective synergy effect of the uniformly well-dispersed Fe-N x (x represents the coordination number) with Pd active centers, which could modulate the adsorption kinetics of the reactant alkynes and alkenes and thus enhancing the selectivity towards styrene. Meanwhile, the hierarchical mesoporous structure is beneficial for the mass transfer, which can effectively promote the interactions between the reactants and active centers. Possible mechanism for the selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene catalyzed by Pd 1.25 -Fe-N-C/VC was also illustrated. Moreover, the Pd 1.25 -Fe-N-C/VC catalyst exhibited sustained catalytic activity and selectivity even after four continuous cycle tests, showing notable reusability and stability. This work may offer a promising approach for creating highly efficient Pd-based catalysts with remarkably low Pd loading for phenylacetylene semi-hydrogenation.

Synergistically enhanced atomically dispersed Fe-Nx sites on carbon nanotubes by heteroatom S to boost electrochemical oxygen reduction for microbial fuel cell

Wenyi Wang,Han Ren,Junhan Guo,Sidi Wang,Jia Wang,Yuanyuan Wang,Wencong Sun,Long Tang,Xueqin Wang

Fuel cells require efficient and durable electrocatalysts to improve oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) to mitigate the current energy crisis. However, unsatisfactory catalytic activity and stability caused by slow kinetics and mass transport characteristics restrict the further development of fuel cells. Here, a preparation strategy is proposed for manufacturing iron single-atom catalyst modified by sulfur doping dispersed over nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs@Fe-NSC). Both experimental theoretical results prove that legitimately engineered substitution doping of coordination structure can effectively regulate charge balance of centers to optimize the adsorption and desorption energy of oxygen-containing intermediates and improve the activation energy barrier of elementary reaction. The NCNTs@Fe-NSC achieves astonishing ORR capacity and satisfactory electrocatalytic stability with a loss of activity about 2.4 % after 60 h, including poison resistance, in neutral electrolyte. This study provides a perspicacious thought for rational design of single atom catalysts using element doping engineering to achieve high efficiency electrocatalysis.

Ammonia Defective Etching and Nitrogen-Doping of Porous Carbon toward High Exposure of Heme-Derived Fe–Nx Site for Efficient Oxygen Reduction

Jiaoxing Xu,Chuxin Wu,Qiangmin Yu,Yi Zhao,Xun Li,Lunhui Guan

The utilization of metal and nitrogen doped carbon as a Pt-free oxygen reduction electrocatalyst depends largely on the homogeneous composition of the metal–nitrogen sites with limited content. Herein a simple and feasible ammonia defective activation strategy is explored on ordered mesoporous carbon (APC) to confine hematin precursor and suppress the formation of inorganic Fe-based derivatives during pyrolysis. Thus, a hierarchically nanoporous Fe/N/APC catalyst with high numbers of exposed iron–nitrogen sites exhibits an impressive performance for oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline media, with large diffusion-limited current density and positive half-wave potential with respect to commercial Pt/C catalyst. The enhanced ORR properties can be majorly ascribed to synergistic contributions of high numbers of exposed catalytic sites completion from high contents of Fe–N and pyridinic N along with the fast mass-transport properties arising from the etched high permeable porous structure. When applied as cathodic catalyst in Zn-air battery, it demonstrates a power density of 200 mW cm–2 and a specific capacity of 605 mA h g–1Zn higher than those of Pt/C catalyst.

Peroxydisulfate activation by atomically-dispersed Fe-Nx on N-doped carbon: Mechanism of singlet oxygen evolution for nonradical degradation of aqueous contaminants

Ningjie Du,Ying Liu,Qiuju Li,Wei Miao,Dandan Wang,Shun Mao

Single-atom catalysts have drawn increasing attention in advanced oxidation due to their unique structure and significant promise in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, single-atom iron anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon (SAFe-N-C) was synthesized with iron phthalocyanine (FePc) and metal-organic framework (ZIF-8). With thermal treatment and acid leaching, atomically-dispersed Fe-N x sites were successfully formed on the surface of N-C support derived from ZIF-8. The prepared catalyst was demonstrated to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for chloramphenicol (CAP) degradation. Compared with N-C, the SAFe-N-C shows 6 times enhanced removal efficiency (from 15.3% to 93.1%) for CAP. Moreover, the catalyst shows high catalytic activity in a wide pH range of 5 to 9 and good resistance to inorganic anions, in which a singlet oxygen-dominated process is found. This study reveals the role of single-atom site in singlet oxygen evolution and offers a new catalytic approach for selective removal of organic pollutants in complex water matrix.

Dual optimization strategy to construct hierarchical reticulated porous framework with enriched Fe-NX active species for the highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction

Qijia Zhu,Jie Lian,Xu Chen,Jinyu Zhao,Yu Gao,Xiaomin Wang

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are severely restricted by slow cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics and expensive noble metal platinum catalysts . In particular, the ORR serves as a key process in electrochemical conversion, which significantly impacts the overall performance of the related devices. Accordingly, we proposed a facile and novel dual-optimization strategy to construct abundant Fe-N X active site embedded hierarchical reticulated porous structure catalysts. Initially, an extensive encapsulated Fe and Fe–N complexes is created in Fe modified zeolitic-imidazolate-frameworks-8/graphene oxide (Fe-ZIF-8/GO) precursor, subsequently, the thermal melting and restructuring process fosters the structural transformation of the precursor to robust and open nano-porous frameworks. In the meanwhile, the encapsulated Fe in the pores of the precursors and the pre-existing Fe–N coordination structures are converted into new Fe-N X active sites. This approach realizes the dual optimization of Fe-N X active site density enhancement and utilization, making the optimal catalyst Fe and N-doped porous carbon/graphene nanosheets-1 (Fe-NPC/GNs-1) exhibits a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.771V under acidic medium, and E 1/2 of 0.917 V toward the ORR in alkaline conditions. The activity and stability under alkaline conditions exceed even that of commercial Pt/C (with negligible potential decay after 10,000 cycles under alkaline conditions), and also showed its capacity to substitute platinum-based catalysts and the potential application in Zn−air batteries.

Engineering Fe-Nx Sites and Fe2O3 Nanoparticles in N-Doped Porous Carbon as a Durable ORR Catalyst for High-Performance Zinc-Air Batteries

Yuxuan Qiao,Yan Lv,Nannan Zhao,Xueyan Wu,Rui Xue,Jixi Guo

The development of efficient and durable non-precious metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical to advancing electrochemical energy devices. Herein, we report a porous, carbazole-based N-doped carbon framework catalyst embedded with Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles and Fe-N x sites. The catalyst was synthesized via pyrolysis of N-rich hypercrosslinked polymers (NHCP), which were derived from the Friedel-Crafts reaction, followed by incorporation of hemin (Fe 2 O 3 /NHCP-2). The introduction of hemin not only preserved the pristine porous architecture but also facilitated the formation of Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles and Fe-N x sites, and their synergistic effect enhanced the ORR kinetics in alkaline media. The optimized Fe 2 O 3 /NHCP-2 catalyst exhibited a high half-wave potential of 0.87 V and demonstrated robust long-term durability in a 0.1 M KOH solution. When employed as the cathode material in zinc-air batteries (ZABs), it delivered a peak power density of 186.84 mW cm −2 and a specific capacity of 731.37 mAh g Zn −1 . This study presents a promising non-precious metal ORR electrocatalyst for future renewable energy applications. Graphical A porous carbazole-based N-doped carbon framework embedded with Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles and Fe-N x sites was synthesized by pyrolyzing N-rich hypercrosslinked polymers from a Friedel-Crafts reaction, then hemin incorporation. As a Zn-air battery cathode, Fe 2 O 3 /NHCP-2 delivers a power density of 186.84 mW cm −2 , high specific capacity (731.37 mAh g Zn −1 ) and OCV (1.52 V). The porous structure ensures rapid O 2 transport. Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles and dispersed Fe-N x sites synergistically enhance ORR. This work demonstrates N-rich hypercrosslinked polymers as effective carbon precursors for high-performance ORR catalysts.

FeS2/NC composite with Fe−Nx and Fe−Cx reactive sites to efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate for the degradation of carbamazepine under visible light

Shan Huang,Jiangxue Luo,Tianren Zhan,Yubo Wu,Jiankun Li,Yanjuan Zhang,Zuqiang Huang,Huayu Hu,Tao Gan

Iron-based catalysts have been widely used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the treatment of carbamazepine (CBZ) wastewater. However, the development of efficient and stable pyrite (FeS 2 )-based catalysts to mitigate the consumption of Fe 3 + /Fe 2+ and S 2 2– is still challenging. Herein, FeS 2 /nitrogen-doped carbon (FeS 2 /NC) composite was synthesized using hydrothermal combined with pyrolytic strategy, wherein FeS 2 and NC connected by Fe−N x and Fe−C x bonds. In the photo-PMS system, FeS 2 /NC achieved a removal rate of 98.2 % for CBZ within 6 min, and the total organic carbon (TOC) removal was 83.4 %, which exceeded FeS 2 and most of the results reported in the previous literature. The electron paramagnetic resonance results and quenching experiments confirmed that 1 O 2 played a critical role in the FeS 2 /NC + PMS + visible light system, while h + , SO 4 • − , and •O 2 − were secondary. The excellent performance stemmed from that the Fe−N x and Fe−C x bonds between FeS 2 and NC enhanced the photogenerated electron transport efficiency, resulting in efficiently circulating Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ and minimizing the S 2 2– consumption. Meanwhile, the electron-deficient graphitic-N could facilitate the 1 O 2 generation. Moreover, FeS 2 /NC exhibited good stability and satisfactory universality, providing the potential for actual wastewater treatment. This work offers a novel strategy for enhancing the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle and reducing the S 2 2– consumption of FeS 2 -based catalyst for the effective treatment of CBZ wastewater.

Self-Grown Carbon Nanotube Encapsulated Co Nanoparticle Compound Fe-Nx/Mesoporous Carbon as Bi-Functional Electrocatalyst to Drive Efficient Electrochemical Overall Water Splitting

Han Wang,Yue Zhong,Mingzhong Li,Yanwei Li,Cong Liu,Yanhui Li

Electrochemical overall water splitting is one of the main choices to realize hydrogen energy. In this study, a simple strategy of self-growth of carbon nanotubes with the tip end of Co nanoparticles compound Fe-Nx/mesoporous carbon as bi-functional electrocatalyst is proposed. At high temperature, cobalt nanoparticles catalyze the self-growth of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes with a tip of cobalt particles from a metal-organic framework ZIF-8. FeTAPc as Fe and N resource is further adsorbed on the shell and then re-carbonized under 900°C to fix Fe-Nx on the polyhedron carbon shell to form bi-functional electrocatalyst (Fe-Nx/Co-NC-900). Fe-Nx/Co-NC-900 showed good OER (330 mV) and HER (239 mV) overpotential. As a result, the porous structure of Fe-Nx/Co-NC-900 and the interconnected three-dimensional carbon network promote the material transport. The self-growing carbon nanotubes improve the conductivity of the electrocatalyst and avoid aggregation. The high dispersion of two kinds of metal atoms and the mixed growth of metal nanoparticles co-endowed Fe-Nx/Co-NC-900 electrocatalyst with rich activity. In addition, Fe-Nx/Co-NC-900 has been used to assemble an electrochemical overall water splitting with a driving voltage of 1.67 V, which shows its practical application in electrochemical overall water splitting. This study provides enlightenment in application of hydrogen energy production.

N-Doped porous tremella-like Fe3C/C electrocatalysts derived from metal–organic frameworks for oxygen reduction reaction

Xinxin Yang,Xiang Sun,Muhammad Rauf,Hongwei Mi,Lingna Sun,Libo Deng,Xiangzhong Ren,Peixin Zhang,Yongliang Li

N-Doped porous tremella-like Fe3C/C electrocatalysts derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) were fabricated via a facile approach. The simply designed catalytic materials have unique fluffy multilayer interconnected porous morphology, which provides a large specific surface area and effectively prevents the agglomeration of nanoparticles. These special features create more active sites (Fe–Nx) on the surface of the electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the presence of the Fe–Nx active sites was verified via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The effect of Fe intake through pyrolysis of MOFs materials was also studied and the composite with 0.04 g Fe source exhibited excellent ORR performance, a very small hydrogen peroxide yield, and followed the four-electron transfer pathway. The ORR activity of the electrocatalyst is comparable to that of commercial Pt/C, while the stability is even better than the latter in an alkaline solution. The facile method of preparing a multilayer porous N-doped tremella-like Fe3C/C electrocatalyst is a promising electrode material for a wide range of applications in fuel cells and metal–air batteries.
