The deep purification of trace heavy metals in drinking water is of great significance and has received considerable attention worldwide. 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD) functionalized magnetic ZIF-8 adsorbent (Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8-DMTD) using a novel one-pot post coordination modulation method at room temperature could effectively adsorb trace heavy metals from drinking water through cooperating with the abundant functional groups and surface charges. The negative surface charges promoted the rapid accumulation of trace heavy metals on the surface of the adsorbent, meanwhile, the abundant thiol/nitrogen sites contributed to their adsorption, thus the adsorption rate and adsorption capacity of trace heavy metals were greatly improved. For trace Pb(II) (150 ppb), the effluent concentration could meet the World Health Organization (WHO) standard (≤10 ppb) within 10 s after adsorption by Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8-DMTD, and the cumulative adsorption capacity that met WHO standard was 12.11 mg/g. Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8-DMTD also showed high stability in a broad pH range and excellent adsorption performance in a wide low concentration range. The effluent concentration still could meet the WHO standard when the initial Pb(II) concentration was 11.70 ppm, and the corresponding adsorption capacity reached 35.00 mg/g. Moreover, the capture experiments for multiple heavy metals that coexisted in tap water showed that the effluent concentrations of Hg(II), Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), and Cr(III) could be lower than the allowable limits in a few minutes. The adsorbent could also be easily recovered using magnets and regenerated by thiourea solution, which showed great application potential for the purification of trace heavy metals in drinking water.

A fluorine-functionalized magnetic metal-organic framework (Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8&F 13 ) was prepared through a facile strategy and served for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs). The synthesized material showed large surface area (924.69 m 2 /g), abundant fluorine content (6.60 %), high adsorption capacity (163.69–368.93 mg/g) and strong magnetic response (24.3 emu/g), facilitating efficient extraction of PFCAs via multiple interactions. Further, this MSPE approach with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was conducted to quantify trace PFCAs in foods. Under optimal parameters, this method exhibited a superior linearity (0.02–25 ng/g, R 2 ≥ 0.9911) and low limit of detection (0.005–0.021 ng/g) with excellent precision (RSD ≤ 4.17 %) in food matrix. Moreover, satisfactory spiked recoveries (88.4–114.9 %) were obtained in pre-treated milk, tomato and fish samples. Our study provides a feasible approach to design specific adsorption targeting PFCAs, as well as a promising potential to monitor fluoroalkyl family in complex matrix.

Core-shell magnetic metal organic nanocrystals were synthesized and used as matrix for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Four nitropolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) were successfully detected by using negative-ion MALDI-TOF MS without background interference. Furthermore, the magnetic nanocomposites (MNCs) coated with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) showed excellent adsorption and enrichment capacity, and can be isolated with a magnet and directly spotted on the stainless steel plate for MALDI measurement. It was also analyzed nitro-PAHs in PM2.5 samples using the ZIF-8-coated magnetic nanocomposite as adsorbent and matrix.

A high-performance magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) coating using zeolite imidazolate framework-8 coated magnetic iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-8) as a carrier was developed for simultaneous automated solid phase microextraction of four estrogens in 24 food samples. The coating material, abbreviated as MZMIP, was synthesized through time-efficient layer-by-layer assembling of ZIF-8 and MIP film on Fe 3 O 4 particles. It was characterized and automatically coated on the surface of SPME fibers by electromagnetic bonding. The extraction performance, reusability, repeatability, and validity of the MZMIP–SPME system was evaluated for high-throughput analysis of estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), estriol (E3), and ethinylestradiol (EE2). Various factors affecting the quality of MZMIP coating were optimized. Compared with traditional magnetic MIP coating based on Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 carrier, the MZMIP coating exhibited high extraction capacity and quick adsorption and desorption kinetics to E1, E2, E3, and EE2 owing to the larger amount of imprinting sites in MZMIP. Under optimum conditions, the proposed system requires only 25 min for pretreatment of all 24 samples (62.5 s per sample). The limits of detection and quantitation of the proposed automated system for analysis were found to range from 0.4 to 1.7 and 1.1 to 6.2 ng g −1 , respectively. During analysis of spiked fish and pork, the new coating showed better recovery and selectivity compared with Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @MIP (MMIP) and commercially available SPME. The results indicated that the MZMIP coating could be effectively employed for pretreatment of ultra-trace level of estrogens in food.
