In this study, greigite (Fe 3 S 4 ) was used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) for sulfamethoazine (SMT) degradation in water. The possible influencing factors such as oxidant concentration, sulfur sources, iron sources and initial pH were investigated. Experimental results showed that SMT could be completely removed at 0.1 mM PMS in 15 min in Fe 3 S 4 /PMS system. 96.7% of SMT was removed at 1.0 mM PDS in 60 min in Fe 3 S 4 /PDS system. Both systems had good performance over a wide pH range of 3–9. In addition, different sulfur sources could affect the crystal structure, morphology and composition of the synthesized catalysts, while different iron sources had little influence. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test evidenced that the activation of PMS and PDS by Fe 3 S 4 was a multi-reactive oxygen species process with the coexistence of •OH, SO 4 •− , O 2 •− and 1 O 2 . SO 4 •− was the main active species in the Fe 3 S 4 /PMS system, while SO 4 •− and •OH were the main free radicals in the Fe 3 S 4 /PDS system. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experiments showed that Fe(II) on Fe 3 S 4 surface effectively activated PMS and PDS, and S 2− species were key factors controlling Fe(II) regeneration and subsequent activation of PMS and PDS. However, the consumption of Fe(II) and S 2− in Fe 3 S 4 /PDS system was higher than that in Fe 3 S 4 /PMS system. In addition, in the two systems, the degradation intermediates of SMT and their practical application were also evaluated. This study provided a systematic evaluation of the performance of Fe 3 S 4 /PMS and Fe 3 S 4 /PDS systems for treatment of antibiotic contaminated water.

Antibiotic pollution in aquatic environments poses critical ecological and health risks worldwide. In this study, a novel Fe 3 S 4 /PDA/HA (FPA) composite was designed as a heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The FPA catalyst was synthesized through a solvothermal route combined with polydopamine (PDA) coating and humic acid (HA) functionalization. Characterizations revealed that PDA and HA modification effectively suppressed nanoparticle agglomeration, reduced iron leaching, broadened the visible-light response, and accelerated Fe 2 + /Fe 3+ redox cycling. Under visible-light irradiation, the FPA/PMS system attained 86.8% TCH removal and 45.6% total organic carbon mineralization within 60 min, with a pseudo-first-order rate constant (0.06658 min −1 ) 2.72-fold higher than that of pure Fe 3 S 4 . The catalyst maintained excellent catalytic activity over a wide pH range (2–10) and showed strong resistance to common coexisting anions. After five cycles, TCH degradation efficiency remained above 87%, confirming excellent reusability. Quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrated that •OH, •O 2 ⁻, SO 4 •⁻, and 1 O 2 were generated, with 1 O 2 acting as the predominant reactive oxygen species. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry revealed three TCH degradation pathways, and ECOSAR toxicity analysis verified that most intermediates exhibited lower toxicity than the parent compound. This work provides a promising and stable photo-Fenton catalyst for efficient degradation of antibiotic pollutants and offers new insights into advanced oxidation processes for wastewater remediation.

s In this study, Fe 3 S 4 was synthesized by hydrothermal method for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade sulfamethazine (SMT). The mechanism of pH influence on the degradation process was systematically investigated, revealing that neutral conditions (pH = 7) yielded the highest degradation efficiency, achieving 99% SMT removal within 30 min. Experimental analysis indicates that the Fe S synergistic effect in Fe 3 S 4 efficiently activates PMS, with singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) serving as the primary active species, indicating that the degradation proceeds predominantly via a non-radical pathway, with minor contributions from radicals such as SO 4 •− and • OH. This system maintained excellent degradation performance in actual water bodies containing various coexisting anions and exhibited broad-spectrum removal capabilities for multiple pollutants. Fe 3 S 4 retained over 80% activity after five cycles, demonstrating good stability and application potential. Overall, this study provides an efficient, stable, and multifunctional catalyst for advanced oxidation processes based on PMS, offering broad application prospects in environmental remediation and water treatment.

Aerobic granular sludge membrane system (AGSMS) represents a new wastewater reuse treatment technology. However, the challenges of membrane fouling and limited micropollutant removal efficiency significantly impact its potential for further application. Consequently, this study aimed to address these concerns by employing Fe 3 S 4 /persulfate pretreatment to mitigate membrane fouling and enhance perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) removal in AGSMS. The effects of pH and persulfate types were investigated by assessing membrane flux, fouling resistance, membrane characterization, and effluent properties. Results showed that optimal mitigation of membrane fouling and removal of PFOA were achieved using Fe 3 S 4 -activated PMS at a pH of 6. The primary mechanism for Fe 3 S 4 -activated PMS involved the generation of SO 4 •− and 1 O 2 . Moreover, the fouling mechanism transitioned from cake layer fouling and intermediate blocking fouling to complete blocking fouling in the presence of Fe 3 S 4 /PMS. The application of extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory revealed that at pH 6.0, there was a significant increase in the energy barrier for both foulant-membrane and foulant-foulant interactions, leading to an effective mitigation of membrane fouling. Correlation analysis demonstrated a significant influence of polysaccharides and total phosphorus concentration on mitigating membrane fouling. Furthermore, pH played a crucial role in mitigating membrane fouling as well as pollutant removal by influencing both coexisting ion states in solution and catalyst properties. This study offers valuable insights for future research and provides essential theoretical guidance for large-scale applications of AGSMS technology in wastewater treatment .

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common vaginal infection found in women in the world. Due to increasing drug-resistance of virulent pathogen such as Gardnerella vaginalis ( G. vaginalis ), more than half of BV patients suffer recurrence after antibotics treatment. Here, metastable iron sulfides (mFeS) act in a Gram-dependent manner to kill bacteria, with the ability to counteract resistant G. vaginalis for BV treatment. With screening of iron sulfide minerals, metastable Fe 3 S 4 shows suppressive effect on bacterial growth with an order: Gram-variable G. vaginalis >Gram-negative bacteria>> Gram-positive bacteria. Further studies on mechanism of action (MoA) discover that the polysulfide species released from Fe 3 S 4 selectively permeate bacteria with thin wall and subsequently interrupt energy metabolism by inhibiting glucokinase in glycolysis, and is further synergized by simultaneously released ferrous iron that induces bactericidal damage. Such multiple MoAs enable Fe 3 S 4 to counteract G. vaginalis strains with metronidazole-resistance and persisters in biofilm or intracellular vacuole, without developing new drug resistance and killing probiotic bacteria. The Fe 3 S 4 regimens successfully ameliorate BV with resistant G. vaginalis in mouse models and eliminate pathogens from patients suffering BV. Collectively, mFeS represent an antibacterial alternative with distinct MoA able to treat challenged BV and improve women health.
