Harnessing the Co-Fe synergy: A novel Co-doped FeOCl for peracetic acid activation to efficiently degrade carbamazepine

Jinlin Hu,Haojie Zhang,Simeng Xia,Yishu Cai,Zhou Shi,Lin Deng

The widespread occurrence of carbamazepine (CBZ) in aquatic environments necessitates efficient water treatment technologies. This study developed a cobalt-doped iron oxychloride (Co-FeOCl) catalyst via a facile calcination method to activate peracetic acid (PAA) for enhanced degradation of CBZ. The incorporation of Co into the FeOCl structure dramatically boosted the catalytic performance, with 0.5Co-FeOCl exhibiting superior activity compared to pristine FeOCl. The 0.5Co-FeOCl/PAA system achieved an apparent rate constant of 0.039 min⁻ 1 , 19.5 and 5.6 times higher than that of the PAA alone (0.002 min⁻ 1 ) and FeOCl/PAA (0.007 min⁻ 1 ) systems, respectively. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the degradation was primarily driven by organic radicals (CH 3 C(O)OO• and CH 3 C(O)O•) and high-valent metal species (Co(IV) and Fe(IV)). The Co doping established synergistic Fe(II)/Fe(III)-Co(II)/Co(III) redox cycles, effectively accelerating the rate-limiting Fe(III) reduction step and facilitating continuous generation of reactive species. XPS analysis confirmed an increased surface Fe(II) content after reaction, supporting this synergistic mechanism. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations proved that Co sites exhibit superior adsorption capacity for PAA compared to Fe sites on three main facets. This work not only presents 0.5Co-FeOCl as a highly efficient and stable catalyst for PAA activation but also provides fundamental insights into the synergistic mechanisms in bimetallic/PAA systems for remediating refractory organic pollutants.

Photo-Fenton-like catalytic performance of FeOCl/HPMC/PAM composite hydrogel for organic pollutant degradation under natural light

Yuqi Sun,Amatjan Sawut,Rena Simayi,Xixi Huang

Though advanced oxidation technologies show promise for water purification, they face challenges. Photocatalysts struggle with recoverability and environmental adaptability, while the Fenton process is limited by the finite cycling of Fe species, low H 2 O 2 utilization, and strict acidic pH requirements. Based on the above issues, this paper developed a novel FeOCl-loaded hydroxypropyl methylcellulose/polyacrylamide (HPMC/PAM) composite hydrogel (FeOCl/HPMC/PAM) is developed as an efficient photo-Fenton-like catalyst. The FeOCl/HPMC/PAM composite system exhibits complex degradation kinetics (zero-order reaction with 5–50 μL hydrogen peroxide solution, first-order reaction with 100 μL hydrogen peroxide solution) and demonstrates highly efficient degradation performance across a broad pH range (1–7). Under pH= 7, it achieves 93.47 % methylene blue (MB) degradation within 60 min via an adsorption-degradation synergistic mechanism. After six cycles, it retains 75 % activity, showing favorable reusability. The cyclic stability test shows that it still retains 75 % of the degradation efficiency after 6 consecutive cycles, confirming its reliable reusability. Meanwhile, the iron leaching rate of the composite material during the reaction is only 0.061 mg/L, confirming its structural stability and environmental safety. With low cost, easy recovery, and wide pH adaptability, this composite hydrogel exhibits potential as a commercially viable system for organic pollutant removal from real water matrices.

FeOCl/MIL-88A heterojunction modified PVDF membrane for enhanced photo-Fenton catalytic degradation and antifouling performance in wastewater treatment

Chen Wu,Hongai Zheng,Xiqian Zheng,Daquan Zhang,Lizhi Zhang,Feiyu Chen,Lifeng Yang,Junliang Wang

FeOCl/MIL-88A composites were used to modify the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes. • Simultaneous high pollutant degradation (94% RhB, 91% MB) and remarkable antifouling with FRR increased from 61% to 93%. • Low Fe leaching (0.102 mg/L) and sustained performance over 5 cycles confirm excellent reusability and safety. • The heterojunction between FeOCl and MIL-88A facilitates charge separation and generates ·OH and·O 2 − . Catalytic membranes fabricated by surface loading of active materials have shown great potential for antifouling improvement. This study investigated a photo-Fenton synergistic membrane separation process by fabricating a FeOCl/MIL-88A composite on the surface of PVDF membranes, which markedly enhanced the membrane performance. The modified membrane (FM-3) maintained high pure water flux (518.2 L/m 2 ·h·bar) and porosity (80%) while exhibiting hydrophilicity (contact angle of 8°). Compared with the pristine membrane, FM-3 achieved a substantially higher HA rejection (78%) with only a minor loss of permeability, alleviating the conventional permeability–rejection trade-off. Under visible-light-driven photo-Fenton conditions, FM-3 demonstrated high degradation efficiencies of 94% for RhB and 91% for MB, with stable performance over 5 cycles. Moreover, the membrane demonstrated remarkable antifouling performance, with a flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 93% and an irreversible fouling rate (R ir ) of only 7%. Finally, a possible membrane antifouling mechanism is proposed:·OH and·O 2 − are the primary active species in the catalytic process. The formed heterojunction facilitates efficient charge separation and promotes the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle. DFT calculations further confirmed the electron transfer direction from FeOCl to MIL-88A, providing theoretical support for the proposed heterojunction mechanism. This work provides a novel and effective approach for designing high-performance catalytic membranes with synergistic separation and anti-fouling functions for sustainable wastewater treatment. Efficient degradation of tetracycline by H2O2 catalyzed by FeOCl: A wide range of pH values from 3 to 7

Yong Cao,Kangping Cui,Yihan Chen,Minshu Cui,Guanghong Li,Dong Li,Xiaojun Yang

Iron Oxychloride (FeOCl) was prepared by partial thermal decomposition and was studied as a heterogeneous Fenton catalyst to degrade tetracycline (TC). SEM, XRD , XPS technology were used to characterize its performance. The influencing factors of TC degradation efficiency were studied, including pH value, H 2 O 2 content, catalyst dosage and initial TC concentration. The results showed that under the optimal conditions, the degradation rate of 60 mg L −1  TC reached 92.9% within 60 min of reaction. The degradation process follows a second-order kinetic equation. Compared with other iron-based catalysts, FeOCl exhibited better catalytic and degradation effects. Moreover, FeOCl/H 2 O 2 system exhibited a wide pH range (from 3.0 to 7.0) for efficient degradation of TC and showed excellent stability and reusability. Meanwhile, based on the intermediates identified by HPLC-MS, two possible pathways for the degradation of TC were proposed. Further, the results of electron spin-resonance spectroscopy and radical quenching tests suggested that the ·OH formed in the FeOCl/H 2 O 2 system was mainly responsible for the degradation of TC.

Vacuum ultraviolet light-driven, FeOCl-catalyzed heterogeneous photo-Fenton process for enhanced degradation of acetaminophen in water: Efficacy and mechanism

Ziyan Feng,Yanyu Zhang,Xiaoyu Tian,Wen Lu,Qi Wang,Zhongguo Zhang,Aimin Wang

Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light has witnessed promising application potential in water treatment for the in situ generation of a series reactive species. Therefore, the coupling of VUV with heterogeneous Fenton systems offers the potential to enhance catalytic activity and pollutant degradation efficiency. Herein, a novel VUV/H 2 O 2 /FeOCl system, featuring VUV irradiation and FeOCl as the catalyst, was developed for acetaminophen (APAP) degradation. The as-prepared FeOCl was systematically characterized by XRD, XPS and SEM. The VUV/H 2 O 2 /FeOCl system exhibited significant superiority when compared to single systems (VUV, H 2 O 2 , FeOCl) and binary combinations (VUV/H 2 O 2 , VUV/FeOCl, H 2 O 2 /FeOCl). Specifically, the pseudo-first-order rate constant for APAP degradation in the VUV/H 2 O 2 /FeOCl process was 5.1–366.9 times higher than other processes, with corresponding mineralization rates enhanced by 7.4 %–81.1 %. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and radical quenching experiments confirmed the involvement of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), holes (h + ), hydroxyl radicals ( • OH), electrons (e − ), and superoxide radicals (O 2 •- ) in the VUV/H 2 O 2 /FeOCl system. The generation of • OH was further validated via fluorescence spectroscopy, which revealed that the VUV/H 2 O 2 /FeOCl system achieved optimal H 2 O 2 activation and highest • OH accumulation. The degradation pathway of APAP was systematically proposed based on an ultra-performance liquid chromatography system coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (UPLC-QqQ-MS) analysis, and the evolution of intermediates toxicity was also investigated. Moreover, the VUV/H 2 O 2 /FeOCl system demonstrated excellent stability and reusability, enabling efficient degradation of various aquatic pollutants. This highly efficient process provides new insights into the remediation of pharmaceutical-contaminated water.

Oxygen bridge mediated S-scheme Bi2WO6/FeOCl heterojunction for visible-light self-Fenton and PMS synergistic activation toward PPCPs degradation

Yuning Zhang,Jian Zhang,Tiantian Yang,Xinyan Wang,Haina Bai,Xin Cheng

Oxygen-bridged S-scheme Bi 2 WO 6 /FeOCl achieves 93% DCF and 91% CBZ removal. • Self-Fenton/PMS synergy generates multiple ROS (SO 4 ·− , ·OH, 1 O 2 , ·O 2 − , h + ). • System sustains >85% removal in real waters and > 90% in 300-min flow test. The built-in electric field at oxygen-bridge-connected heterojunctions is a key driving force for regulating S-scheme charge separation and PMS activation. To address the challenge of removing persistent pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) from water, a Fe–O–W/Fe–O–Bi double‑oxygen-bridge interface was precisely engineered using an in-situ hydrothermal growth strategy, leading to the successful preparation of a direct S-scheme Bi 2 WO 6 /FeOCl heterojunction. The built-in electric field within the interface significantly promotes the directional separation of charges, enhancing light absorption and carrier utilization efficiency. The optimal Bi 2 WO 6 /FeOCl ratio (3:1) efficiently degrades DCF and CBZ in a visible light/PMS system, exhibiting good activity in the pH range of 5–7 with a moderate decrease at pH 9, along with strong resistance to water matrices. The system sustains >90% removal for 300 min in a continuous-flow reactor. Radical trapping and EPR confirm synergistic interactions among SO 4 ·− , ·OH, ·O 2 − , 1 O 2 , and h + , further enhanced by the self-Fenton effect. DFT and LC-MS analyses elucidate the transformation pathways of DCF and CBZ. TOC tests verify that only partial mineralization is achieved under current conditions, and toxicity assessments confirm significantly reduced ecological risks of residual intermediates. This study provides an efficient and stable photocatalytic-PMS synergistic system for PPCPs-contaminated water remediation.

Enhanced carrier separation and photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline via S-scheme MIL-53(Fe)/FeOCl heterojunction composites with peroxydisulfate activation

Wei Dong,Chunyan Du,Yin Zhang,Jiao Cao,Jingyi Jiang,Lu Zhou,Guanlong Yu,Yulv Zou,Huaiyuan Peng,Rong Yan,Yu Yang

Visible light-driven photocatalysis often struggles with fast recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pair and unsatisfactory degradation efficiency of hazardous micropollutants, such as antibiotics. Constructing an effective heterojunction can address these challenges. In this study, a novel S-scheme MIL-53(Fe)/FeOCl heterojunction composite was synthesized using a hydrothermal method. Factors influencing oxytetracycline (OTC) removal and the underlying reaction mechanism were investigated. The MF-10 composite demonstrated a remarkable removal efficiency of 90 %, significantly higher than that of MIL-53(Fe), which was 54 %. Even after six cycles, the degradation efficiency only decreased by 8 %, and the composition of MF-10 remained unchanged, indicating excellent durability. The photocatalytic process involves crucial reactive species such as · OH, SO 4 • – , O 2 • – , and h + . The heterojunction construction extends the absorption range of visible light, and the internal electric field enhances the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs while maintaining robust electron and hole activity. Additionally, photogenerated electrons facilitate the Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycling, resulting in the production of more reactive species for OTC degradation. This work introduces a novel approach to enhance the activity of photocatalysts and provides valuable insights into the design of peroxydisulfate activators.

2D surfaces twisted to enhance electron freedom toward efficient advanced oxidation processes

Ximeng Xu,Shujing Zhang,Yuhao Wang,Nana Wang,Qinli Jiang,Xiaohong Liu,Qingqing Guan,Wei Zhang

Two-dimensional (2D)-interface engineering for designing effective electron-rich catalyst center is pivotal in manipulating the catalytic behaviors and activity, but still challenging. Here, we’ve successfully twisted the surfaces of the 2D layered FeOCl, fulfilling the targeted fine-tuning of its Fe sites. The obtained new catalyst can boost peroxymonosulfate activation for reactive species with much lower energy barriers and efficiently oxidized target organic with almost 41 orders of magnitude faster reaction kinetics than pristine FeOCl. The increased degree of freedom of electron around Fe site has been identified as the key driver. The distorted geometry structure around Fe has led to an increased polarization of charge distribution, associating with less symmetric electron valence cloud and higher electron mobility. Thus, the twisted surfaces enable a much enhanced interfacial charge transfer between Fe site and the electron-deficient peroxymonosulfate. This work highlights the concept of twisted surface construction toward efficient advanced oxidation catalyst design.

Precursor-driven structural tailoring of iron oxychloride for enhanced heterogeneous Fenton activity

Xu Shengshuo,Lu Zhenying,Wang Jinling,Huang Guangtuan,Wang Hualin,Yang Xuejing

Iron oxychloride (FeOCl) is a unique layered material with tunable electronic properties. The conventional synthetic route of chemical vapor transition involves a thermodynamics-driven gas–solid interfacial reaction which often generates macroscopic crystals with stable facets. In this study, through analyzing the effects of the synthetic parameters on the FeOCl synthesis, we discovered the dominant contribution of the α -Fe 2 O 3 precursors on the chemical property of the FeOCl product, and subsequently developed a highly-controllable synthetic route of tailoring the FeOCl structures into small sizes and exposed high-energy facets via a facile and scalable mechanical-chemical approach. The synthesized products could be systematically tuned by the ball-milling conditions of the α -Fe 2 O 3 precursors. With increased milling time, the FeOCl crystallites demonstrated reduced sizes and more exposed (110) facets. Intriguingly, these small-sized FeOCl catalysts exhibited much faster Fenton-like kinetics than the pristine macroscopic FeOCl materials. Specifically, FeOCl catalysts with a 12-hour milling time showed nearly 39 times higher efficiency toward phenol degradation than the pristine FeOCl. The structure-reactivity relationship was further elucidated using the combinatory analysis via density functional theory calculation, electron paramagnetic resonance and radical quenching probe experiments. This work provides a rationale for tailoring the surface structures of FeOCl crystallites for potential applications in environmental catalysis.

Electro-controlled membrane coupling heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EM-HEF) in treating acetaminophen: performance, mechanism, DFT calculation, and application

Yongjun Song,Aimin Wang,Songyu Ren,Yanyu Zhang,Ruiyan Fan,Ying Liu,Zhongguo Zhang

The utilization of hybrid electro-Fenton (EF) processes has gained considerable attention, which can combine the advantages of two or more treatment methods resulting in efficient removal of refractory pollutants from water. Here, an electro-controlled membrane coupling heterogeneous EF (EM-HEF) system was constructed for the degradation of acetaminophen (APAP) in water. In the EM-HEF system, a bifunctional ACF/CC-FeOCl-Cu cathode material was synthesized to enhance the HEF reaction, while a tubular Ti microfiltration membrane was used as both cathode and membrane. Degradation experiments indicated the EM-HEF system exhibited remarkable removal efficiency (97.0 %) towards APAP within 30 min under the conditions of flow rate at 60 mL min −1 , initial pH at 7.1, and current density at 3 mA cm −2 . Notably, the cathode materials showed low metal leaching rate and high APAP removal rate in the 10 cyclic experiments. The common inorganic anions (Cl − , HCO 3 − , HPO 4 2− , and NO 3 − ) did not inhibit the removal of APAP significantly, whereas humic acid exhibited a more pronounced inhibitory effect only at concentrations exceeding 10 mg L −1 . Quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) tests confirmed the pivotal role of hydroxyl radicals in the decomposition of APAP. Combining density functional theory (DFT) and LC-MS results, three pathways were proposed. The overall toxicity of intermediates was relieved during EM-HEF degradation of APAP. Furthermore, it also achieved good performance in the treatment of landfill leachate, with increasing BOD 5 /COD ratio from 0.11 to 0.34. This work provides an efficient strategy for the removal of refractory pollutants in water.

Peracetic acid integrated catalytic ceramic membrane filtration for enhanced membrane fouling control: Performance evaluation and mechanism analysis

Yumeng Zhao,Yanxin Zhao,Xin Yu,Dezhen Kong,Xinru Fan,Runzhi Wang,Shuangjiang Luo,Dongwei Lu,Jun Nan,Jun Ma

Endowing ceramic membrane (CM) catalytic reactivity can enhance membrane fouling control in the aid of in situ oxidation process. Peracetic acid (PAA) oxidant holds great prospect to integrate with CM for membrane fouling control, owing to the prominent advantages of high oxidation efficacy and easy activation. Herein, this study, for the first time, presented a PAA/CM catalytic filtration system achieving highly-efficient protein fouling alleviation. A FeOCl functionalized CM (FeOCl-CM) was synthesized, possessing high hydrophilicity, low surface roughness, and highly-efficient activation towards PAA oxidation. Using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as the model protein foulant, the PAA/FeOCl-CM catalytic filtration notably alleviated fouling occurring in both membrane pores and surface, and halved the flux reduction degree as compared with the conventional CM filtration. The PAA/FeOCl-CM catalytic oxidation allows quick and complete disintegration of BSA particles, via the breakage of the amide I and II bands and the ring opening of the aromatic amino acids (e.g., Tryptophan, Tyrosine). In-depth investigation revealed that the in situ generated • OH and 1 O 2 were the key reactive species towards BSA degradation during catalytic filtration, while the organic radical oxidation and the direct electron transfer pathway from BSA to PAA via FeOCl-CM played minor roles. Overall, our findings highlight a new PAA/CM catalytic filtration strategy for achieving highly-efficient membrane fouling control and provide an understanding of the integrated PAA catalytic oxidation - membrane filtration behaviors.

Iron complexes synthesized from FeOCl with carboxylic acid based ligands as Fenton-like catalysts for the highly efficient degradation of organic dyes over a wide pH range

Han Chen,Yuqi Liu,Tong Yan,Qi Wang,Nanhao Jin,Xinying Wang,Xiaoming Liu,Yue Zhao,Yuebin Feng,Huilong Luo,Wei Li

Iron-based materials have garnered significant attention as Fenton-like catalysts for the degradation of organic dyes. However, challenges remain in optimizing hydroxyl radical (•OH) utilization and broadening the effective pH range for practical applications. In this study, three iron-based catalysts (complex 1 , 2 , 3 ) were synthesized via a hydrothermal method, utilizing iron oxychloride (FeOCl) as the metal ion source and 4,5-imidazole dicarboxylic acid, furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid, and 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid as ligands, respectively. The results indicate that these synthesized Fe-based catalysts exhibit enhanced visible light absorption and superior photo-Fenton activity, outperforming FeOCl in the degradation of rhodamine B (Rh-B), crystal violet (CV), and methylene blue (MB). Moreover, the Fe-based catalyst system operates effectively over a wide pH range (1–8) and efficiently degrades organic dyes. In free radical scavenging experiments, hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ) were identified as the primary agents responsible for photocatalytic degradation. Among the catalysts, complex 1 displayed notable stability, retaining its catalytic activity after three reuse cycles. This work presents a promising approach for designing highly efficient and stable Fenton-like catalysts, offering excellent environmental remediation capabilities across a broad pH range.
