Sulfur doped FeOx nanosheet arrays supported on nickel foam for efficient alkaline seawater splitting

Weiju Hao,Jinli Fan,Xia Xu,Yiran Zhang,Haiyang Lv,Shige Wang,Shengwei Deng,Shuo Weng,Yanhui Guo

Developing economical, efficient and stable bifunctional catalysts for hydrogen production from seawater is of great significance for hydrogen utilization. Herein, sulfur doped iron oxide nanosheet arrays supported on nickel foam (FeOx–Ni3S2@NF) are prepared by a one-pot solvothermal reaction. Owing to the high intrinsic activity of FeOx–Ni3S2, the large catalytic specific surface area of nanosheet arrays and the fast charge transportation capability achieved by the self-supporting configuration, the FeOx–Ni3S2@NF electrode delivers excellent catalytic performance in alkaline simulated seawater (1 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl). Impressively, a low overpotential of 120 mV at 50 mA cm−2 with a Tafel slope of 57 mV dec−1 for the hydrogen evolution reaction and an overpotential of 470 mV at 200 mA cm−2 with a Tafel slope of 62 mV dec−1 for the oxygen evolution reaction are achieved. More importantly, the voltage is only 1.5 V at 50 mA cm−2 for continuous overall water splitting for 100 h at 200 mA cm−2 with negligible decay in alkaline simulated seawater with almost 100% Faraday efficiency. This work provides a simple and universal strategy to prepare highly efficient bifunctional catalytic materials, promoting the development of Earth-abundant materials to catalyse seawater splitting to produce high-purity hydrogen.

Synergy between FeOX and CuOX in FeCuOX/TiO2-hBN composites for NO reduction with NH3

Dongsheng Zhou,Bo Li,Zhaoxia Ma,Xiaodong Huang,Xiaobin Zhang,Hangsheng Yang

A synergy between FeO X and CuO X was confirmed in FeCuO X /TiO 2 -hBN composites for selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH 3 . Accordingly, the reducibility of composites was modified to promote the NO to NO 2 oxidation but suppress the NH 3 to NO over oxidation, which is of benefit to the NO reduction. Also the optimal operation temperature could be controlled by tuning the Fe:Cu atomic ratio, and Fe 10 Ti 85 BN 5 , Fe 7.5 Cu 2.5 Ti 85 BN 5 and Fe 2.5 Cu 7.5 Ti 85 BN 5 achieved the best NO removal above 90% at 375   °C, 300   °C and 250   °C, respectively. From the NO 2 and NH 3 adsorption behaviors over FeCuO X /TiO 2 -hBN, the reaction followed Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism below 275   °C, but followed Eley–Rideal mechanism above 350   °C. The influence of SO 2 on NO removal was found to be temperature dependent, at temperature below 325   °C, slight deactivation was observed, while a promotion was achieved above 350   °C.

Microstructure-engineered FeOx@C composites with synergistic loss mechanisms for remarkable electromagnetic microwave absorption performance

Chen Chen,Yuanyuan Zhang,Yina Wang,Dan Yao,Zhongjun Ma,Xueyun Han

Iron-doped carbon composites are prepared as microwave absorbing materials. • Remarkable microwave absorption is achieved via synergistic loss mechanisms. • The dual absorption mechanism involves dielectric and magnetic losses. • Controlling the calcination temperature allows tuning losses and impedance matching. • The optimized Fe 3 O 4 @C composite achieves an exceptional minimum reflection loss. : The pursuit of lightweight, high-performance, broadband, thin electromagnetic wave–absorbing materials has attracted considerable research attention in the context of addressing electromagnetic pollution and interference issues. Herein, we prepare iron-doped carbon composites (FeO x @C) via a hydrothermal method and controlled calcination, achieving remarkable electromagnetic wave absorption performance through synergistic loss mechanisms. By adjusting the calcination temperature, the granular microstructure, including Fe 3 O 4 crystallinity/morphology and carbon graphitization/defects, was precisely controlled to balance conductive/magnetic losses and optimize impedance matching for optimal performance. A large reflection loss peak of −44.8 dB, correlating to nearly 99.99% absorption efficiency, is obtained with a 2.5-mm-thick Fe 3 O 4 @C nanorod absorber at an effective absorption bandwidth ( RL < −10 dB) of 3.92 GHz (9.76–13.68 GHz). Important relationships are revealed between the reflection loss peak value (RL), absorption peak frequency, and effective absorption bandwidth (EAB), with respect to the overall thickness of the Fe 3 O 4 @C nanorod absorber. The HFSS Electromagnetic simulations were conducted to verify the above experimental findings. The results demonstrate that the Fe 3 O 4 @C composite coating achieves the lowest radar cross-section (RCS) over a wide angular range compared to Fe 2 O 3 @C and Fe@C, verifying its superior microwave absorption performance. This research achievement holds particular importance in the context of mitigating radiation interference in 5G technology and enhancing shielding absorption of X-band radar waves.

Degradation mechanisms and toxicity determination of bisphenol A by FeOx-activated peroxydisulfate under ultraviolet light

Hongbo Peng,Hongyan Gu,Zhimin Xu,Guomei Xiong,Peng Gao,Siyao Wang,Xiongchao Li,Fangfang Li

Ultraviolet light (UV)-assisted advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are commonly used to degrade organic contaminants. However, this reaction system's extensive comprehension of the degradation mechanisms and toxicity assessment remains inadequate. This study focuses on investigating the degradation mechanisms and pathways of bisphenol A (BPA), generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and toxicity of degradation intermediates in UV/PDS/ferrous composites (FeOx) systems. The degradation rate of BPA gradually increased from the initial 11.92% to 100% within 120 min. Sulfate radicals (SO4.−), hydroxyl radicals (.OH), superoxide anions (O2.−), and singlet oxygen (1O2) were the primary factors in the photocatalytic degradation of BPA in the UV/PDS/FeOx systems. The main reactions of BPA in this system were deduced to be β-bond cleavage, hydroxyl substitution reaction, hydrogen bond cleavage, and oxidation reaction. A trend of decreasing toxicity for the degradation intermediates of BPA was observed according to the toxicity investigations. The efficient degradation of BPA in UV/PDS/FeOx systems provided theoretical data for AOPs, which will improve the understanding of organic contaminants by FeOx in natural industry wastewater.

γ-Al2O3@Ni/FeOx egg-shell microspherical catalysts for continuous flow selective hydrogenation of functionalized nitroarenes

Guanglin Cao,Xiao Chen,Huibin Liu,Weilin Shen,Changhai Liang

The catalytic reduction of nitroaromatic compounds to aromatic anilines is a widely employed route for producing high-value refined chemicals and large-scale commodities. Developing highly efficient catalysts represents a promising strategy to achieve continuous and selective hydrogenation of functionalized nitroarenes under flow conditions. In this work, γ-Al 2 O 3 @Ni/FeO x egg-shell microspherical catalysts featuring high atomic dispersion, high specific surface area, and tunable active sites are designed by strategically harnessing hydrotalcite-inspired characteristics, which integrates a Ni–FeO x interfacial synergy into an egg-shell architecture for continuous-flow selective hydrogenation. In the continuous flow selective hydrogenation of o -chloronitrobenzene, the γ-Al 2 O 3 @Ni/FeO x -3 egg-shell microspherical catalyst presents a turnover frequency (TOF) of 30.16 h −1 , substantially higher than those of γ-Al 2 O 3 @Ni and γ-Al 2 O 3 @FeO x . Compared with the uniform Ni 3 Fe 1 /Al 2 O 3 catalyst, the egg-shell catalyst also exhibits enhanced mass transfer efficiency. The egg-shell catalyst enables an increased presence of electron-rich Ni δ- sites and FeO x species rich in oxygen vacancies on the surface of γ-Al 2 O 3 microspheres. Due to the formation of Ni δ- -O v -Fe 2+ , the egg-shell catalyst exhibits remarkable H-spillover capability, significantly enhancing the selective hydrogenation of o -chloronitrobenzene to o -chloroaniline. The apparent activation energy of the γ-Al 2 O 3 @Ni/FeO x -3 catalyst is only 22.99 kJ mol −1 , much lower than those of other egg-shell catalysts, indicating the synergistic integration of metallic Ni sites and oxygen vacancies. In addition, the as-prepared γ-Al 2 O 3 @Ni/FeO x -3 egg-shell catalyst presents long-term stability over 80 h and broad substate scope. This work offers comprehensive guidance for the rational design of industrial egg-shell catalysts, as well as establishes a solid foundation for the continuous flow selective hydrogenation process, aimed at producing substituted anilines from functionalized nitroarenes.

Engineering electron distribution of Cu2O/FeOx@CNFs p–n heterojunction nanozyme: boosting the Fenton reaction efficiency

Shiwen Zhao,Lintao Yang,Jinggao Wu,Shipeng Qi,Yaojie Liu,Honglei Tian,Jianke Li,Yuhuan Zhang

Nanozymes with high efficiency, stability, and cost-effectiveness hold great potential for various applications. However, their use in Fenton reactions is limited by the rate-limiting step of Fe3+ reduction. Herein, oxygen vacancy-rich Cu2O/FeOx p–n heterojunction on carbon nanofibers (Cu2O/FeOx@CNFs) is developed to boost Fenton reaction efficiency. The heterojunction structure harnesses a built-in electric field to facilitate charge carrier separation, with Cu+ serving as the electron donor for accelerating the reduction of surface-generated Fe3+. Meanwhile, Cu2O/FeOx@CNFs encourages abundant lattice defects, creating ample catalytic sites and oxygen vacancies. Theoretical insights revealed that the defect-rich property well regulated the electron distribution at the atomic level, driving the adsorption–desorption process and accelerating Fenton reaction kinetics. As such, Cu2O/FeOx@CNFs demonstrates an affinity for H2O2 up to 200 times that of natural horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and a Vmax 3.40 times higher. The CNFs used as the support well confine Cu2O/FeOx, endowing Cu2O/FeOx@CNFs with high stability and biocompatibility, and fast mass transport. The strong intrinsic magnetic properties of Cu2O/FeOx@CNFs contribute to recyclability. Finally, Cu2O/FeOx@CNFs is successfully employed in efficient pollutant degradation and antibacterial applications, offering new insights into the rational design of nanozymes with desired properties.

Electrochemical Extraction of Fe–Si Alloy Form SiO2–CaO–CaF2–FeOx Slags by Molten Oxide Electrolysis

Zhang Xu,Zhang Liqi,Huang Bowen,Yang Yusheng,Zhao Zengwu

Materials like metallic iron and its alloys are essential to daily living and industrial production. The benefits of using electrolysis technology to prepare iron and its alloys are great efficiency, controllability, and environmental protection. This study focuses on the feasibility of the electrochemical method for the direct preparation of metallic iron and Si–Fe alloys in iron ores with high fluoride content. The electrochemical behavior of Fe(II) and Fe(III) in molten SiO 2 –CaO–CaF 2 slag on tungsten electrodes was investigated by using cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry methods. It was determined that the reduction of Fe(II) ions follows a one-step two-electron transfer process: Fe(II) + 2e −  → Fe(0). The reduction of Fe(III) involves a two-step electron transfer process: Fe(III) + e −  → Fe(II) and Fe(II) + 2e −  → Fe(0), respectively. The Fe(II)/Fe(0) process is an irreversible reaction controlled by diffusion. The diffusion coefficient of Fe(II) is D Fe(II)  = 1.5 × 10 −6 cm 2  s −1 . The cathodic deposits of iron were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The findings indicate that the production of Fe 2 Si alloy through electrolysis is more favorable when Fe(II) is present in the slag, while the production of metallic iron is more favorable when Fe(III) is present in the slag. This work provides a basis for the electrochemical direct preparation of Fe–Si alloy and metallic iron in high fluorine iron ore.

Photo-induced CO2 cycloaddition and tetracycline degradation over novel FeOx modified defective graphitic carbon nitride composite

Ruolin Cheng,Jing Ren,Haoran Wang,Huagen Liang,Panagiotis Tsiakaras

Utilizing sunlight to achieve CO 2 conversion and environmental remediation has been a key focus. Herein, “all-in-one” graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) composite-based photocatalysts were synthesized by a simple one-step low-temperature calcination . Lower calcination temperature resulted in defective g-C 3 N 4 enriched in cyano and hydroxyl groups . It was found that by incorporating amorphous FeO X , the resulted FeO X /O-g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst shows very good performance towards both CO 2 cycloaddition reaction and photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline (TC). It was also found that the photocatalyst shows the highest styrene carbonate yield of 83% (23 mmol g −1 h −1 ) under ambient conditions, which is 13.8 times higher than that obtained over pure g-C 3 N 4 . The photocatalyst also exhibits a 4.7 times faster TC removal rate than that of pure g-C 3 N 4 . Systematic characterization and mechanism study demonstrate the role of defects and photo-induced charge carriers.

Singlet oxygen-dominated dual-pathways catalytic ozonation of sulfamethoxazole over FeOx-N-BC/O3–MNBs system

Meiling Cai,Xiaojun Miao,Xiaoyan Wang,Xueyan Xue,Hui Zhu,Liping Yang,Xinqian Zhang,Jiao Yin

Heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO) is a promising technology for water purification but is often restricted by low ozone utilization and poor gas-liquid-solid mass transfer. In this work, a dual-enhanced catalytic ozonation system was developed by coupling a nitrogen-doped cotton-straw-derived biochar supported mixed-valent iron catalyst (FeO x -N-BC) with ozone micro-nanobubbles (O 3 -MNBs). The catalyst was synthesized via impregnation and two-step pyrolysis, enabling uniform dispersion of Fe active sites and electronic structure modulation through nitrogen doping. The O 3 -MNBs improved ozone dissolution and transfer efficiency at the interface. Under optimal conditions, the FeO x –N–BC/O 3 –MNBs system achieved an SMX removal efficiency of 83.3 % and a mineralization rate of 37.9 %, with a pseudo-first-order kinetic constant of 0.30 min −1 , significantly outperforming single ozonation. EPR and quenching experiments confirmed a radical-nonradical dual degradation pathway dominated by singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 , 25.13 %). XPS revealed that C, N, and Fe species underwent synergistic valence state evolution, sustaining ROS generation and catalytic stability. The system maintained 51.1 % removal efficiency after five cycles with negligible anion interference. This study demonstrates a low-cost, efficient, and stable catalytic ozonation strategy, providing a practical route for antibiotic wastewater treatment and valorization of agricultural residues.

Selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia by efficient FeOx in coal ash: insights from experimental and DFT studies

Yili Zhang,Su Zhang,Binxin Fang,Liming Cui,Yixiang Zhang,Wenzhen Zhang,Houzhang Tan,Ming Li,Xuebin Wang

Ammonia-coal co-firing is a promising strategy for reducing CO 2 emissions while utilizing existing coal infrastructure. However, challenges remain in controlling nitrogen oxide (NO x ) emissions and unreacted ammonia (NH 3 ). This study investigates the role of iron oxide (FeO x ) species in coal ash for the selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) of NH 3 during co-firing, combining experimental and density functional theory (DFT) approaches. Four FeO x species (α-Fe 2 O 3 , γ-Fe 2 O 3 , Fe 3 O 4 , FeO) were systematically evaluated for their NH 3 -SCO performance over the temperature range of 300–1000°C under varying oxygen concentrations. Experimental results showed a distinct catalytic activity trend: α-Fe 2 O 3 > γ-Fe 2 O 3 > Fe 3 O 4 > FeO, with Fe 3 O 4 exhibiting superior N 2 selectivity due to its abundant surface oxygen species and reduced oxidation state. Oxygen concentration was found to significantly affect reaction pathways; lower O 2 levels enhanced N 2 selectivity for Fe 3 O 4 and FeO, while α-Fe 2 O 3 and γ-Fe 2 O 3 maintained stable oxidation performance. DFT calculations confirmed experimental observations, revealing NH 3 adsorption energies (−1.79 to −0.91 eV) and identifying the *NH 3 → *NH 2 step as the rate-determining step. Mechanistic analysis highlighted an internal selective catalytic reduction (i-SCR) pathway, where energy barriers dictated product selectivity: α-Fe 2 O 3 /γ-Fe 2 O 3 favored NO formation, whereas Fe 3 O 4 /FeO promoted N 2 generation. This study provides valuable insights into the catalytic behavior of different FeO x species in coal ash, offering a foundation for optimizing ammonia-coal co-firing systems to mitigate both NO x and NH 3 emissions synergistically.

Construction of PtFe/FeOx-Al2O3 interface via regulating the metal – support interactions for selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde

Zequan Ma,Yilin Dong,Xu Tan,Jia Xue,Xiaoge Li,Yu Gu,Hui Shi,Lin-Wei Chen,Kun Wang,Lei Wang

Strong metal – support interactions represent a promising strategy to regulate catalytic performance by forming a thin encapsulation layer or new metal-bond, which have attracted explosive research attention. However, a full coating layer can sometimes block the accessibility of reactants to the active sites and significantly reduce the activity. Herein, we report a new method to construct specific PtFe/Al 2 O 3 -Fe 2 O 3 interface via tuning a relatively moderate metal-support interaction over the Al 2 O 3 -Fe 2 O 3 (AF) composite material. Our findings reveal that a permeable FeO x coating layer and PtFe alloy were formed on the Pt/AF catalysts under high temperature reduction conditions. The encapsulation layer was much thinner than that of the Pt/Fe 2 O 3 under a similar high temperature treatment. The precisely engineered Pt-Fe/AF interface presented exceptional catalytic activity for hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde with high C=O hydrogenation selectivity (∼88 %) and impressive sulfur-resistance. This straightforward and effective approach holds significant potential value for future industrial applications.

3D Copper Foam@FeOx Nanoarrays as a High Areal Capacity and Stable Electrode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Feng Zhang,Chengkai Yang,Huanqin Guan,Yiran Hu,Can Jin,Henghui Zhou,Limin Qi

Despite remarkable development in high capacity iron oxide-based electrodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the low mass loading and poor areal capacity still impede their practical applications. In this report, novel FeOx nanoarrays were directly constructed on three-dimensional (3D) copper foam current collector (denoted as CF@FeOx NAs) via facile hydrothermal growth followed by a postannealing process. The nanoarrays were stacked by numerous FeOx porous nanoblocks, exhibiting a unique hierarchical structure. The loading density of FeOx in the CF@FeOx NAs reached 2.5 mg cm–2 owing to the hierarchical structure of the novel 3D nanoarray electrode. When tested as an anode for LIBs, the 3D integrated electrode delivered high areal capacities of 3.33 and 2.61 mAh cm–2 at 0.25 and 1.25 mA cm–2, respectively. A high areal capacity of 2.12 mAh cm–2 was retained at 2.5 mA cm–2 after 500 cycles, which is the best electrochemical performance in terms of areal capacity for the iron oxide-based electrodes reported so far. Even at a higher current density of 12.5 mA cm–2, the areal capacity was still maintained at 0.96 mAh cm–2, demonstrating good rate capability. A lithium full cell test was also conducted using LiNi0.8Co0.05Al0.15 (NCA) as a cathode and the CF@FeOx NAs as an anode, which exhibited a good areal capacity of 0.94 mAh cm–2 at 2.5 mA cm–2 after 50 cycles. This work offers a promising pathway to greatly enhance the loading density and areal capacity of metal oxide-based electrodes for electrochemical energy storage.
