The poor cycling stability and rate performance of transition metal selenides (TMSs) are caused by their intrinsic low conductivity and poor structural stability, which hinders their application in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). To address this issue, encapsulating TMSs within carbon nanoshells is considered a viable strategy. However, due to the lack and uncontrollability of internal void space, this structure cannot effectively mitigate the volume expansion induced by large K + , resulting in unsatisfactory electrochemical performance. Herein, peanut-shaped FeSe 2 @carbon yolk-shell capsules are prepared by modulation of the internal space. The active FeSe 2 is encapsulated within a robust carbon shell and an optimal void space is retained between them. The outer carbon shell promotes electronic conductivity and avoids FeSe 2 aggregation, while the internal void mitigates volume expansion and effectively ensures the structural integrity of the electrode. Consequently, the FeSe 2 @carbon anode demonstrates exceptional rate performance (242 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 ) and long cycling stability (350 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g −1 ). Furthermore, the effect of internal space modulation on electrochemical properties is elucidated. Meanwhile, ex situ characterizations elucidate the K + storage mechanism. This work provides effective guidance for the design and the internal space modulation of advanced TMSs yolk-shell structures.

P-doped CoSe 2 /FeSe 2 heterojunction nanoparticles (2–10 nm) anchored on a three-dimensional porous foam-like carbon network were synthesized via a direct pyrolysis-blowing strategy followed by phosphorization/selenization process. This carbon network serves as a continuous pathway for electron conduction, enhances specific surface area, and alleviates electrode volume expansion during cycling. Specifically, P-doping further improves the electrical conductivity of CoSe 2 /FeSe 2 nanoparticles, significantly accelerating electrochemical kinetics and enabling high specific capacities at elevated current densities. Benefiting from the unique nanostructure and atomic-level P-doping, the P-CoSe 2 /FeSe 2 (2:1)/C anode delivers prominent cycling stability (210.9 mAh g −1 after 2000 cycles at 2000 mA g −1 ) and exceptional rate capability (323.5 mAh g −1 at 5000 mA g −1 ). This work demonstrates that combining heterojunction engineering with heteroatom doping is an effective strategy to enhance the long-term cycling stability of sodium-ion battery anodes.

Hydrogen selenide (H 2 Se) plays key roles in diverse physiological processes ; however, the noninvasive regulation of H 2 Se levels in living systems has been rarely achieved and the functional mechanism of H 2 Se in cancer cells remains unclear. Herein, biocompatible ferrous selenide (FeSe 2 ) nanoflowers with second near-infrared (NIR-Ⅱ) photoactivatable H 2 Se generation were developed for metastasis-inhibited cancer therapy. Upon NIR-II laser irradiation, FeSe 2 nanoflowers generated mild photothermal effect, leading to their decomposition and on-demand release of H 2 Se to induce cell death. Such a FeSe 2 nanoflower-mediated synergistic photothermal-H 2 Se gas therapy effectively suppressed the tumor growth in a subcutaneous breast tumor-bearing mouse model. Furthermore, the local generation of H 2 Se was proved to down-regulate the expression levels of metastasis-related proteins, contributing to the complete inhibition of liver and lung metastasis. Overall, we report a NIR-Ⅱ photoactivatable H 2 Se production strategy for metastasis-inhibiting cancer therapy, which may be mediated by autophagy, opening a new avenue for the biomedical application of H 2 Se in the future.

Thanks to their high conductivity and theoretical capacity, transition metal selenides have demanded significant research attention as prospective anodes for sodium-ion batteries. Nevertheless, their practical applications are hindered by finite cycle life and inferior rate performance because of large volume expansion, polyselenide dissolution, and sluggish dynamics. Herein, the nitrogen-doped carbon (NC)-coated FeSe2 nanoparticles encapsulated in NC nanoboxes (termed FeSe2@NDC NBs) are fabricated through the facile thermal selenization of polydopamine-wrapped Prussian blue precursors. In this composite, the existing nitrogen-doped dual carbon layer improves the intrinsic conductivity and structural integrity, while the unique porous yolk–shell architecture significantly mitigates the volume swelling during the sodium/desodium process. Moreover, the derived Fe–N–C bonds can effectively capture polyselenide, as well as promote Na+ transportation and good reversible conversion reaction. As expected, the FeSe2@NDC NBs deliver remarkable rate performance (374.9 mA h g–1 at 10.0 A g–1) and long-cycling stability (403.3 mA h g–1 over 2000 loops at 5.0 A g–1). When further coupled with a self-made Na3V2(PO4)3@C cathode in sodium-ion full cells, FeSe2@NDC NBs also exhibit considerably high and stable sodium-storage performance.

Pathogenic infection leads to excessive senescent cell accumulation and stagnation of wound healing. To address these issues, we devise and develop a hydrogen selenide (H 2 Se)-evolving bio-heterojunction (bio-HJ) composed of graphene oxide (GO) and FeSe 2 to deracinate bacterial infection, suppress cellular senescence and remedy recalcitrant infected wounds. Excited by near-infrared (NIR) laser, the bio-HJ exerts desired photothermal and photodynamic effects, resulting in rapid disinfection. The crafted bio-HJ could also evolve gaseous H 2 Se to inhibit cellular senescence and dampen inflammation. Mechanism studies reveal the anti-senescence effects of H 2 Se-evolving bio-HJ are mediated by selenium pathway and glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1). More critically, in vivo experiments authenticate that the H 2 Se-evolving bio-HJ could inhibit cellular senescence and potentiate wound regeneration in rats. As envisioned, our work not only furnishes the novel gasotransmitter-delivering bio-HJ for chronic infected wounds, but also gets insight into the development of anti-senescence biomaterials.
