Mechanism analysis of hydroxypropyl guar gum degradation in fracture flowback fluid by homogeneous sono-Fenton process

Fuhua Wang,Zezhuang Sun,Xian Shi,Luyi Wang,Weidong Zhang,Zhihao Zhang

An effective hybrid system was applied as the first report for the successful treatment of key pollutants (hydroxypropyl guar gum, HPG) in fracturing flowback fluid, and the synergistic index of the hybrid system was 20.45. In this regard, chemical oxygen demand ( COD ) removal ratio was evaluated with various influencing operating factors including reaction time, H 2 O 2 concentration, Fe 2+ concentration, ultrasonic power, initial pH, and temperature. The optimal operating parameters by single-factor analysis method were: the pH of 3.0, the H 2 O 2 concentration of 80 mM, the Fe 2+ concentration of 5 mM, the ultrasonic power of 180 W, the ultrasonic frequency of 20–25 kHz, the temperature of 39 ℃, the reaction time of 30 min, and the COD removal rate reached 81.15 %, which was permissible to discharge surface water sources based on the environmental standards. A possible mechanism for HPG degradation and the generation of reactive species was proposed. Results of quenching tests showed that various impacts of the decomposition rate by addition of scavengers had followed the order of EDTA-2Na < BQ <  t -BuOH, therefore OH radicals had a dominant role in destructing the HPG. Based on the kinetic study, it was concluded that Chan Kinetic Model was more appropriate to describe the degradation of HPG. Identification of intermediates by GC–MS showed that a wide range of recalcitrant compounds was removed and/or degraded into small molecular compounds effectively after treatment. Under the optimal conditions, the sono-Fenton system was used to treat the fracturing flowback fluid with the initial COD value of 675.21 mg/L, and the COD value decreased to 80.83 mg/L after 60 min treatment, which was in line with the marine sewage discharge standard. In conclusion, sono-Fenton system can be introduced as a successful advanced treatment process for the efficient remediation of fracture flowback fluid.

A high-temperature-resistant and metallic-crosslinker-free fracturing fluid based on guar gum/montmorillonite nanocomposite

Ying-Xian Ma,Yu-Rou Du,Cun-Hu Zou,Jie Lai,Le-Yao Ma,Jian-Chun Guo

A combination of moderate apparent viscosity , temperature resistance, and low damage is highly desired for fracturing fluids used in high-temperature reservoirs. The aim of this study is to achieve this combination by introducing inorganic nanolayered montmorillonite (MMT) to form a high-temperature-resistant and metallic-crosslinker-free intercalated nanocomposite fracturing fluid (GMN). The exfoliated MMT was uniformly dispersed and connected with polymer chains of guar gum to form a highly three-dimensional cross-linked network, which resulted in increased apparent viscosity and viscoelasticity of GMN compared with the guar gum fracturing fluid. Temperature resistance tests and thermogravimetric analyses demonstrated that the nanofiller enhanced the thermal stabilities of the nanocomposites, and this was attributed to three effects, including high chemical bond energies, heat barriers and minimization of chain free volumes in MMT. In the absence of a metallic crosslinker and temperature stabilizer, the resistance temperature of the GMN fracturing fluid reached 160 °C, a 40 °C enhancement compared to that of the guar gum fracturing fluid. Moreover, the GMN fracturing fluid were easily broken and exhibited a 10.34% damage rate to provide the desired fracture conductivity. It was concluded that layered MMT effectively improved the temperature resistance of guar gum fracturing fluid and exhibited great potential for use in high-temperature reservoirs.

Effect of guar gum on the physicochemical properties and in vitro digestibility of lotus seed starch

Mingjing Zheng,Qingxiang You,Yan Lin,Fengyi Lan,Menglin Luo,Hongliang Zeng,Baodong Zheng,Yi Zhang

The effect of guar gum (GG) on the physicochemical properties and digestibility of lotus seed starch (LS) subjected to autoclaving-cooling were investigated. Compared to LS alone, LS with 0.03% or 0.15% GG displayed higher crystallinity and short-range order, resulting in the formation of a denser crystal structure. It might contribute to the reduced swelling power, final viscosity, and setback viscosity for those complexes. Coating effect and hydrophilicity were more apparent in LS containing 0.30%, 0.60%, or 0.90% GG, which weakened their crystal structure and increased swelling power, final viscosity, and setback viscosity. The addition of GG delayed starch digestion in vitro, decreased the content of rapidly digestible starch, and increased the content of resistant starch, especially when 0.30% GG was added to 30% LS. The changes in crystal structure and viscosity partially explained the reduced digestibility.

Experimental study on the adsorption mechanism and desorption of guar gum with different structures on quartz surfaces

Peng Shi,Shibin Wang,Yipeng Li,Xuhua Xia,Li Bao,Shan Xu

The adsorption and desorption of guar gum on quartz surfaces are particularly concerned in mineral flotation and hydraulic fracturing. The adsorption capacity of GG, HPG, CMG, and CGG in quartz was quantitatively studied by spectroscopy. The adsorption mechanism and desorption of four different structures of guar gum on the quartz surface were investigated using zeta potential, XPS, and adhesion work. The adsorption morphology of guar gum on the quartz surface was studied by AFM. The results showed that the adsorption capacity was CGG > GG > HPG > CMG. The adsorption capacity was reduced after adding urea. There were hydrogen bonding interactions between the four types of guar gum structures and quartz surfaces. There was electrostatic repulsion between the CMG and quartz surfaces and electrostatic attraction was observed between the CGG and quartz surfaces. The adsorption of guar gum with four structures on the surface of quartz was more inclined to the upright form with multiple adsorption sites. Urea preferentially occupied the adsorption sites on quartz surfaces and inhibited the hydrogen bonding between guar gum and quartz surfaces. The research results have practical significance for the related study of the adsorption and desorption of guar gum on mineral surfaces.

Flexible and anti-freezing zinc-ion batteries using a guar-gum/sodium-alginate/ethylene-glycol hydrogel electrolyte

Jiawei Wang,Yuan Huang,Binbin Liu,Zixuan Li,Jiyan Zhang,Guoshen Yang,Pritesh Hiralal,Shunyu Jin,Hang Zhou

Natural polymer hydrogels are promising candidates for solid-state electrolytes in zinc-ion batteries. They are safe, biocompatible, and mechanically robust. However, the ionic conductivity of most natural polymer-based hydrogels is unsatisfactory, and they are particularly problematic at sub-zero temperatures because freezing severely limits their functionality. In this study, we fabricate composite hydrogels with high ionic conductivity (25.37 mS cm −1 ). This is done by blending two kinds of natural polymers, guar gum (GG) and sodium alginate (SA). The zinc-ion batteries with GG/SA hydrogel electrolytes show a superior electrochemical performance (354.9 mAh g −1 at 0.15 A g −1 , 137.0 mAh g −1 at 6 A g −1 and capacity retention of 91.52% over 1000 cycles) than the zinc-ion batteries with the pure GG hydrogel electrolyte. In addition, to extend the application range of GG/SA hydrogels into the sub-zero temperature region, we introduce ethylene glycol (EG) into GG/SA to form GG/SA/EG anti-freeze hydrogel. Below -20 °C, the GG/SA/EG hydrogel maintains a high ionic-conductivity (6.19 mS cm −1 ), and the zinc-ion batteries, which were made of GG/SA/EG hydrogel electrolyte, showed an excellent low-temperature discharge performance, for a specific capacity of 181.5 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 . This study describes a new approach for the development of natural polymer-based hydrogel electrolytes with high ionic-conductivity and good anti-freeze capability.

Effect of grafted groups on adsorption conformation and adsorption behavior of guar gum: insights from molecular interactions

Peng Shi,Shibin Wang,Fengjie Ma,Mian Zhang,Hongbo Zeng

The adsorption conformation of guar gum molecules on silica surfaces determines the structural characteristics of the adsorption layer, potentially enabling diverse functionalities in engineering applications. However, the influence of grafted groups on the adsorption characteristics of guar gum remains unclear. The adsorption conformations and morphologies of unmodified ordinary guar gum (GG) and three modified guar gums — hydroxypropyl guar gum (HPG), carboxymethyl guar gum (CMG), and hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride guar gum (HPTCG) — on silica surfaces were investigated via molecular dynamics simulations and AFM topography. The adsorption behavior of four guar gums was investigated by QCM-D experiment. The four guar gums exhibited distinct adsorption conformations: GG formed a mushroom-like structure, HPG adopted a “lying-flat” conformation with moderate folding, CMG presented an “L-shaped” orientation, and HPTCG displayed an upright conformation. AFM adhesion force measurements and chemical calculations indicated that the types and intensities of interactions between the four guar gums and silica surfaces varied. These differences result in different adsorption capacities, diffusion coefficients, adsorption layer stability, and layer structural characteristics of the four guar gums on silica surfaces. The results provide valuable insights for the molecular design of guar gum derivatives and their potential applications in interfacial fields.

The role of guar gum in improving the gel and structural characteristics of germinated highland barley starch

Wentao Pan,Wenmeng Liu,Jinwang Li,Yi Chen,Qiang Yu,Jianhua Xie

Germinated highland barley has been shown to have many health benefits, but the weakening of the starch gel properties during the germination limits its further application. In this study, germinated highland barley starch (GBS) was obtained after germination treatment. Guar gum (GG) was added to explore the effects of gelatinization on the rheology, gel and structural characteristics of GBS, and the potential of preparing gel-based products was also evaluated. The results showed that the addition of GG significantly increased the viscosity, gel strength and viscoelasticity of GBS, which was beneficial to the formation of gel, and promoted its formation of an ordered and compact gel network structure. The study provides a theoretical reference for the preparation of gel-based food with highland barley starch, and increases the application range of highland barley.

Guar Gum/Ethyl Cellulose-Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone Composite-Based Quartz Crystal Microbalance Humidity Sensor for Human Respiration Monitoring

Weiyu Yan,Dongzhi Zhang,Xiaohua Liu,Xiaoya Chen,Chunqing Yang,Zhanjia Kang

In this work, the guar gum (GG) and the electrospinned ethyl cellulose-polyvinyl pyrrolidone (EC-PVP) nanofibers were used as humidity-sensitive materials for fabricating a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, water contact angle test, and X-ray photoelectron spectra were used to characterize the synthesized GG/EC-PVP composite material, confirming its successful preparation and good hydrophilicity. The humidity sensitivity experiments were performed at room temperature. The GG/EC-PVP-coated QCM sensor has high sensitivity (55.72 Hz/%RH) and low hysteresis (2.8% RH) in a wide relative humidity range (0–97% RH), short response/recovery time (26/2 s), excellent selectivity, good repeatability, and stability. The combined action of hydrophilic groups and porous structure enhances the humidity sensitivity. The GG/EC-PVP sensor can be used to capture and measure typical breathing patterns in different human basic emotions due to its good performance. Furthermore, a lie-detector system was also designed for judging the lying through detecting the emotional breathing pattern of the subjects.

Layer-by-layer assembly of cationic guar gum, cellulose nanocrystals and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose based multilayered composite films

Saini Arun,Sharma Deepak,Xia Yuanyuan,Saini Aman,You Xiangyu,Su Ying,Chen Lihong,Yadav Chandravati,Li Xinping

Eco-friendly sustainable materials provide an appealing template to replace contemporary synthetic-nonrenewable resource-based materials while maintaining the acceptable material properties to meet the performance requirements. Here, a layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly technique was used for fabricating multilayer composite films using all bio-based polymers/polysaccharides, i.e. cationic guar gum (CGg), carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (cCNCs) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC). A five layered composite film was fabricated by depositing polymeric layers as follows: CGg→cCNCs→HPMC→cCNCs→CGg. The structural analysis of (CGg/cCNCs/HPMC) 5 L multilayered composite films indicated the existence of electrostatic interaction as well as H-bonding between polymeric layers that resulted in homogenous, dense and compact film surface with improved smoothness and strength properties. As compared to pure CGg film, the (CGg/cCNCs/HPMC) 5 L multilayered composite films showed improved tensile strength (84.8 % increment) and modulus (29.19 % improvement). Importantly, the deposition of HPMC layer contributed in achieving multilayer composite films with more flexible behavior (46.55 % improvement in elongation at break). Furthermore, owing to the high transparency (89.5 % transmittance), appreciable gas and oil barrier performance and resistance to various solvents (e.g. acetone, THF and DMAc), these multilayer films are promising candidates for various applications including renewable/sustainable packaging materials.

Development of high-strength, tough, and self-healing carboxymethyl guar gum-based hydrogels for human motion detection

Wei Chen,Yunhao Bu,Delin Li,Yuan Liu,Guangxue Chen,Xiaofang Wan,Nan Li

Self-healing hydrogels have attracted intense attention because of their potential applications in ionic strain sensors. However, most self-healing hydrogel sensors exhibit poor mechanical properties due to the inherent compromise between the dynamic interactions for healing and steady interactions for mechanical strength. Here, strong, tough and self-healing ionic conductive hydrogel sensors were prepared based on synergistic multiple noncovalent bonds among carboxymethyl guar gum (CMGG), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), and ferric metal ions (Fe3+) in a covalent polymer network. The incorporated CMGG, mediated by metal–ligand interactions, acts as dynamic cross-linkers, endowing the ionic hydrogels with superior mechanical properties. In addition, the reversible and dynamic nature of the multiple metal–ligand interactions accounts for the good self-recovery capabilities, remarkable mechanical properties, and high self-healing efficiencies. Furthermore, the ionic conductive hydrogels displayed good strain sensitivity with repeatable, reliable, and precise changes of resistance signals. Based on these merits, the hydrogel could be assembled as a flexible strain sensor to monitor and distinguish various human motions. We expect that this facile method of incorporating the biocompatible and biodegradable CMGG for the design of strong, tough, self-healing and ionic conductive hydrogels may have promising potential for flexible strain sensors for human motion monitoring.

Conjugation of vitamin E-TPGS and guar gum to carry borneol for enhancing blood–brain barrier permeability

Yude Liu,Lian Rao,Hongguan Zhang,Yanyou Cen,Kaili Cheng

Herb borneol is usually used in clinics for the treatment of central nervous system illness, for its ability of blood–brain barrier permeability, although its poor water solubility and poor bioavailability limit its clinical application to some degree. In this study, we developed a novel nanoparticle combining the benefits of vitamin E d-ɑ-tocopheryl poly(ethylene glycol) succinate (E-TPGS) (or TPGS) and guar gum to get TPGS-g-guar gum as a drug delivery system to carry borneol, which could improve the solubility of borneol and increase the drug-loading capacity efficiently. The results showed that TPGS-g-guar gum nanoparticles delivery system was suitable to carry borneol and release the drug effectively, and TPGS-g-guar gum/borneol nanoparticles would be a potential platform for improving the treatment of central nervous system illness and cerebrovascular disease.

Improvement of anti-washout property of calcium phosphate cement by addition of konjac glucomannan and guar gum

Qian Guowen,Li Xingmei,He Fupo,Ye Jiandong

The inferior anti-washout property of injectable calcium phosphate cement (CPC) limits its wider application in clinic. In this study, the improvement of anti-washout performance of CPC by addition of konjac glucomannan or guar gum, which was dissolved in the CPC liquid, was first studied. The influence of KGM/GG blend with different mass ratios on the anti-washout property, compressive strength and in vitro cytocompatibility of CPC was estimated. The results revealed that small amount of KGM or GG could obviously enhance the anti-washout property of CPC. Moreover, the washout resistance efficiency of KGM/GG blend was better than KGM or GG alone. The addition of KGM/GG blend slightly shortened the final setting time of CPC. Although the introduction of KGM/GG blend reduced the compressive strength of CPC, the compressive strength still reached or surpassed that of human cancellous bone. The best KGM/GG mass ratio was 5:5, which was most efficient at not only reducing CPC disintegration, but also increasing compressive strength. The addition of KGM/GG blend obviously promoted the cells proliferation on the CPC. In short, the CPC modified by KGM/GG blend exhibited excellent anti-washout property, appropriate setting time, adequate compressive strength, and good cytocompatibility, and has the potential to be used in bone defect repair. The addition of KGM/GG blend significantly improved the anti-washout property of CPC. The best KGM/GG mass ratio was 5:5, which was most efficient in reducing the CPC disintegration.
