Hierarchical HAp–AuNR hybrid microspheres as pH/NIR sensitive drug carrier for photothermal/chemo synergic therapy

Guanru Chang,Mingxiang Ji,Zhaopeng Qi,Long Chen,Haitao Zhang,Ye Yuan,Yansu Lan

To integrate pH/NIR dual-responsive drug release mechanisms with multimodal therapies for effective treatment of malignant tumors, hierarchical hydroxyapatite (HAp)/AuNR hybrid microspheres, consisting of a hollow HAp core and an AuNR shell, were facilely synthesized using phytic acid (IP6) as a sustainable template and phosphorus source. Urea served as the pore-forming agent and pH regulator during the synthesis process. The integration of AuNR into multifunctional HAp systems enabled NIR-responsive controllable drug release and photothermal ablation specifically at the tumorigenic site. The aggregation of AuNR within and outside the hybrid microspheres effectively hinders the release of doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) from the hollow HAp microspheres, mitigating the initial burst release and minimizing side effects. The results indicate that the h-HAp/AuNR hybrid exhibited remarkable drug loading efficiency (159.9 μ g ⋅ mg − 1 ), with drug release exhibiting pH-dependent behavior due to the dissolution of HAp in acidic environments. Furthermore, MTT assays and fluorescence imaging demonstrate that DOX-loaded h-HAp/AuNR significantly enhance antitumor efficacy, achieving a cell survival rate of 12.3% at a concentration of 100 μ g ⋅ mL. This integrated system offers a promising approach for combined chemotherapeutic delivery and NIR photothermal therapy.

Highly efficient reduction of 4-nitrophenolate to 4-aminophenolate by Au/γ-Fe2O3@HAP magnetic composites

Yide Xia,Ying Liu,Nannan Shi,Xungao Zhang

In this article, the catalyst Au/γ-Fe2O3@hydroxyapatite (Au/γ-Fe2O3@HAP) consisting of Au nanoparticles supported on the core–shell structure γ-Fe2O3@HAP was prepared through a deposition–precipitation method. The catalyst was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, N2 adsorption–desorption and atomic absorption spectrometry. The as-prepared Au/γ-Fe2O3@HAP exhibited excellent performance for the reduction of 4-nitrophenolate (4-NP) to 4-aminophenolate (4-AP) in the presence of NaBH4 at room temperature. Thermodynamic and kinetic data on the reduction of 4-NP to 4-AP catalyzed by the as-prepared catalyst were studied. The as-prepared catalyst could be easily separated by a magnet and recycled 6 times with over 92% conversion of 4-NP to 4-AP. In addition, the as-prepared catalyst showed excellent catalytic performance on other nitrophenolates. The TOF value of this work on the reduction of 4-NP to 4-AP was 241.3 h−1. Au/γ-Fe2O3@HAP might have a promising potential application on the production of 4-AP and its derivatives.

Innovative synergy of BF co-doping and modified HAP@PP separator for high-performance LMFP batteries

Cheng Li-Qian,Gong Yi,Chen Kai,Hao Xuxia,Jiang Min,Dai Yu,Xie Xinyuan

LiMn 0.8 Fe 0.2 PO 4 (LMFP) cathode has emerged as a promising candidate for high-energy–density lithium-ion batteries due to its cost-effectiveness, high voltage plateau and intrinsic safety. However, drawbacks such as low electrical conductivity, Jahn–Teller effect and Mn 2+ dissolution severely limit its application potential. Herein, we propose a strategy that couples B-F co-doping with HAP@PP separator modification to simultaneously boost the conductivity of LMFP and mitigate Mn 2+ leaching using a facile solid-phase method. The optimized LiMn 0.8 Fe 0.2 P 0.99 B 0.01 O 3.97 F 0.03 (LMFP-BF1) exhibits superior rate capability and excellent cycle stability, which delivers a discharge capacity of 137.4 mAh g −1 and retains 92.6% of that capacity at 1C after 300 cycles. Moreover, HAP@PP separator exhibits an excellent manganese capture effect, which reduces the precipitation of manganese content from 134.647 to 14.056 mg kg −1 . The LMFP-BF1|HAP@PP cell remains a discharge capacity of 140.6 mAh g −1 at 0.5–45 ℃ after 100 cycles, with a capacity retention rate of 88.31%. This study offers insights into integrating ion doping and separator modification for phosphate-based high-energy–density lithium-ion batteries. Graphical abstract B-F co-doping and modified HAP@PP separator can simultaneously boost the conductivity of LMFP and mitigate Mn 2+ leaching, delivering superior cycling stability.

Impact of pore structure on hydroxyapatite supported nickel catalysts (Ni/HAP) for dry reforming of methane

Bin Li,Xiaoqing Yuan,Baitao Li,Xiujun Wang

The hierarchical supports have motivated intensive research interests of chemists in the catalytic field because of the rational combination of mass transport property and large surface area. In this work, hydroxyapatite (HAP) supported nickel catalysts were prepared and employed to promote the dry reforming of methane (DRM). The proportion of mesopore/macropore in HAP was adjusted by the heating temperature (20, 50, 80, 120 °C) during the preparation process. The pore structure played an important role in regulating the physiochemical properties and thus affecting the catalytic performance in DRM. With increasing the proportion of mesopore on HAP, Ni preferentially dispersed on mesopore channel to form small-size particles. All catalysts possessed weak interaction between Ni nanoparticles and HAP; however, the interaction enhanced gradually with decreasing the Ni particles diameter. High proportion of macropore led to large-size Ni nanoparticle, while high proportion of small-size mesopore at 2–5 nm resulted in the complete blockage of these pore structures. These two boundary situations led to relatively weak interaction between nickel particles and the support, low metal dispersion and hence low activity as well as rapid deactivation in the DRM evaluation. Ni nanoparticles on HAP-80 and HAP-120 supports possessed relatively higher dispersion, which imparted these two catalysts with the function of strong anti-sintering ability and carbon resistance, thereby exhibiting better catalytic activity and stability in DRM evaluation. The deactivation of all catalysts during the reforming reaction was mainly ascribed to the sintering as well as encapsulation of Ni nanoparticles by graphitic carbon .

Highly porous and elastic aerogel based on ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires for high-performance bone regeneration and neovascularization

Gao-Jian Huang,Han-Ping Yu,Xue-Lian Wang,Bing-Bing Ning,Jing Gao,Yi-Qin Shi,Ying-Jie Zhu,Jun-Li Duan

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) is promising for the clinical treatment of bone defects because of its excellent biocompatibility and osteo-conductivity. However, highly porous HAP scaffolds usually exhibit high brittleness and poor mechanical properties, thus organic constituents are usually added to form composite materials. In this work, a highly porous and elastic aerogel made from ultralong HAP nanowires with ultrahigh porosity (∼98.5%), excellent elasticity and suitable porous structure is prepared as the high-performance scaffold for bone defect repair. The highly porous structure of the as-prepared aerogel is beneficial to bone ingrowth and matter/fluid transfer, and the high elasticity can ensure the structural integrity of the scaffold during bone regeneration. Therefore, the HAP nanowire aerogel scaffold can promote the adhesion, proliferation and migration of rat bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs), and elevate the protein expression of osteogenesis and angiogenesis related genes. The in vivo experimental results demonstrate that the HAP nanowire aerogel scaffold is favorable for the ingrowth of new bone and blood vessels, and thus can greatly accelerate bone regeneration and neovascularization. The as-prepared HAP nanowire aerogel scaffold shows promising potential for biomedical applications such as bone defect repair.

In-situ fabrication of zeolite imidazole framework@hydroxyapatite composite for dispersive solid-phase extraction of benzodiazepines and their determination with high-performance liquid chromatography-VWD detection

Li Zi-Ling,Zhang Zi-Yang,Zhao Teng-Wen,Meng Chun-Yan,Zhang Qian-Ying,Wang Man-Man

A novel zeolite imidazole framework@hydroxyapatite composite (ZIF-8@HAP) was constructed via in-situ growth and developed for efficient dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE) of three benzodiazepines from urine samples. The prepared composite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometer, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffractometry, zeta potential analyzer, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption experiment. Characterization results showed typical dodecahedron ZIF-8 crystals that were uniformly located on the surface of rod-like HAP. The combination of ZIF-8 and HAP made the surface area significantly enhanced from 4.68 to 205.44 m 2  g −1 . Compared with a commercial C 18 adsorbent, ZIF-8@HAP exhibited superior removal performance for interfering components from urine and offered better extraction properties for the analytes. The prepared ZIF-8@HAP was applied as an adsorbent in DSPE, and the main experimental parameters, including pH and ionic strength of solution, adsorbent amount, adsorption time, elution solvent, and volume, were investigated. Under optimal conditions, the adsorption for 250 ng mL −1 of each analyte in 4 mL of urine was accomplished within 2 min using 60 mg of adsorbent. The method of ZIF-8@HAP–based DSPE followed by high-performance liquid chromatography gave enhancement factors of 13.3–15.3, linear ranges of 2.5–500 ng mL −1 , and limits of detection ( S/N  = 3) of 0.7–1.4 ng mL −1 . The relative recoveries at three spiked levels ranged from 88.7 - 102% with intra-day and inter-day precisions from 3.0 - 10.3% and 2.3 - 12.3%, respectively. These results indicated that the proposed strategy had promising applicability for convenient, rapid, and efficient determination of benzodiazepines in urine samples. HAp incorporated ultrafine polymeric fibers with shape memory effect for potential use in bone screw hole healing

Min Bao,Xianliu Wang,Huihua Yuan,Xiangxin Lou,Qinghua Zhao,Yanzhong Zhang

In the clinical setting of bone fracture healing, hardware removal often causes localized microtrauma and residual screw holes may act as stress risers to place the patient at a risk of refracture. To address this noted issue, this study proposed to develop a biologically mimicking and mechanically self-actuated nanofibrous screw-like scaffold/implant for potential in situ bone regeneration. By incorporating nano-hydroxyapatite (HAp) into a shape memory copolymer poly(D,L-lactide-co-trimethylene carbonate) (PLMC) via co-electrospinning, composite nanofibers of HAp/PLMC with various HAp proportions (1, 2 and 3 wt%) were successfully generated. Morphological, thermal and mechanical properties as well as the shape memory effect of the resultant HAp/PLMC nanofibers were characterized using a variety of techniques. Thereafter, osteoblasts isolated from rat calvarial were cultured on the fibrous HAp/PLMC scaffold to assess its suitability for bone regeneration in vitro. We found that agglomerates gradually appeared on the fiber surface with increasing HAp loading fraction. The switching temperature for actuating shape recovery Ts (i.e., glass transition temperature Tg) of the fibrous HAp/PLMC was readily modulated to fall between 43.5 and 51.3 °C by varying the HAp loadings. Excellent shape memory properties were achieved for the HAp/PLMC composite nanofibers with a shape recovery ratio of Rr > 99% and shape fixity ratio of Rf > 99%, and the shape recovery force of the HAp/PLMC nanofibers was also strengthened compared to that of the HAp-free PLMC nanofibers. Moreover, we demonstrated that the engineered screw-like HAp/PLMC scaffold/implant (ϕ = 5 mm) was able to return from a slender bar to its original stumpy shape in a time frame of merely 8 s at 48 °C. Biological assay results corroborated that the incorporation of HAp to PLMC nanofibers significantly enhanced the alkaline phosphatase secretion as well as mineral deposition in bone formation. These attractive results warrant further investigation in vivo on the feasibility of applying the biomimicking nanofibrous HAp/PLMC scaffold with shape memory effect for bone screw hole healing.

Facile fabrication of polymer-based Fe3O4/HAp/PAA/PAM nanohybrid and it’s application for removal of dye

Wu Rui,Tian Guanghui,Liu Cunfang,Li Yapeng

The controlled synthesis of hybrids nanoparticles (NPs) and polymer have received significant attention for application in environment. In the paper, green and multifunctional polymer-based Fe 3 O 4 /hydroxyapatite (HAp)/polyacrylic acid (PAA)/ polyacrylamide (PAM) nanohybrids with magnetism was fabricated by polymerization. The obtained materials (Fe 3 O 4 /HAp/PAA/PAM) was characterized by hysteresigraph, X-Ray diffractometer (XRD), infrared spectrometer (IR), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), mapping, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The decontaminating performance of the nanohybrids was evaluated by adsorption methylene blue (MB). Adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms were employed to examine the adsorption behavior. The results showed that the adsorption process fitted the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Fe 3 O 4 /HAp/PAA/ PAM displayed appreciable adsorption efficiency. The adsorption mechanism was also presumed. The removal of dye mainly attributed to polymer with multifunctional groups and the special structure of HAp. Moreover, it is facile to retrieve due to the incorporation of Fe 3 O 4 with strong magnetism. It proposed a novel route to design and fabricate multifunctional nanohybrid adsorbent for removal of dye with high capacity.

Seawater boosts oxytetracycline (OTC) residues in struvite via hydroxyapatite (HAP) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) co-precipitation

Degui Gao,Yuefei Huang,Shungui Zhou,Bing Li,Guangqian Wang

Seawater, as an alternative magnesium (Mg) source, has the potential to improve the overall economic and environmental footprint of struvite production compared to the use of pure Mg salts. However, the presence of other ions in seawater may affect the migration of tetracyclines (TCs), commonly found in wastewater, potentially reducing the quality of the recovered product, and posing environmental risks. But these effect has not been illustrated before. This study investigated the impact of seawater on oxytetracycline (OTC) migration during struvite recovery from swine wastewater. Under varying pH levels and Mg/P molar ratios, the OTC content in recovered struvite was ranged from 19 to 103 μg/g, which was 6 to 43 μg/g when using MgCl 2 as Mg source. The key factor influencing OTC content was identified as Ca 2+ in seawater. The co-precipitation of hydroxyapatite (HAP) and the incorporation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were the primary reasons for increased OTC content. Interactions between Ca 2+ on HAP surfaces and the carbonyl oxygen of OTC, along with ternary complex formations involving Ca 2+ , DOM, and OTC, facilitated OTC migration through adsorption onto struvite. Notably, increasing the Mg/P molar ratio reduced OTC enrichment due to the competition between Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations supported these interfacial interactions. These findings enhanced the understanding of antibiotic migration during phosphorus (P) recovery using seawater as alternative Mg source and suggested solutions for reducing P recovery contamination in the future.

Biocompatible magnetic hydroxyapatite Fe3O4-HAp nanocomposites for T1-magnetic resonance imaging guided photothermal therapy of breast cancer

Asim Mushtaq,Zhe Tang,Yike Hou,Zheng Zhu,Cong Tian,Yuling Wu,Yuguang Lu,M. Zubair Iqbal,Xiangdong Kong

Theranostic nanomedicine designs integrating diagnostic and therapeutic paradigms have been achieving considerable success at clinics. However, the toxicity of nanocomposites in these designs remains a major obstacle to the success of personalized medicine. Herein, highly biocompatible iron and hydroxyapatite materials were selected to design a Fe 3 O 4 -HAp nano-theranostic system with controlled dimensions using simple solvothermal synthesis . The biocompatibility of Fe 3 O 4 -HAp magnetic hydroxyapatite nanocomposites (MHNCs) was further enhanced by Food and Drug Administration- (FDA-) approved triblock copolymers , namely, Pluronic® F-127. Indeed, polymer modification improved the drug encapsulation capacity of HAp, and 70% anti-TROP 2 was loaded onto the surface of MHNCs for intracellular targeting of breast cancer. The Fe 3 O 4 component of MHNCs possessed a high T 1 -MR imaging enhancement feature with an excellent r 1 value, demonstrating these MHNCs as capable substitutes for Gd-based toxic contrast agents. Moreover, indocyanine green (ICG-) coupled-MHNCs revealed strong absorption in the near-infrared region and produced enough temperature (75 °C), even at low (50 ug/mL) concentrations, to ablate cancerous cells upon 808 laser irradiation to induce cell toxicity and apoptosis. The promising diagnostic and photothermal therapeutic performance of these designed MHNCs make them an ideal nano-theranostic agent.

High-efficiency fluoride capture in wastewater remediation using microbially mineralized HAP@Vaterite composites: Process optimization and environmental benefits

Lei Liu,Yan Wang,Yanling Deng,Huiying Zhang,Wen Hong,Malcom Frimpong Dapaah,Abdallah Abdelfattah,Hui Jia

A novel HAP@Vaterite was optimized via both single-factor experiments and RSM model. • The quadratic model shows high accuracy, with only 0.19% deviation in F − removal rate. • Vat-5.9 achieved a peak F − adsorption capacity of 23.3 mg/g, with over 99% removal. • F − competes coordination sites with PO 4 3− , induces ACP transformation into Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 F. • HAP@Vaterite offers high socio-economic benefit and a net reduction of CO 2 emissions. The presence of fluoride (F − ) in wastewater poses escalating threats to both the ecological systems and human health. This study developed an HAP@Vaterite composite through green biomineralization and phosphate modification for the efficient removal of F − from low-concentration wastewater, while maintaining promising engineering applications. The optimal formulation, Vat-5.9, was determined by single-factor experiments and the Box-Behnken response surface methodology. The predicted and experimental removal efficiencies differed by only 0.19%, confirming the model's reliability. Compared to chemically synthesized CaCO 3 mineralization material (Cal-5.9), Vat-5.9 exhibited a maximum F − adsorption capacity of 23.3 mg/g, achieving a removal efficiency exceeding 99%. The adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic (ΔG < 0, ΔH > 0). Defluoridation proceeds via two synergistic pathways: (1) substitution of –OH by F − , leading to stable Ca–F bonds, and observed deposition of CaF 2 microcrystals on the material's surface, and (2) competition of F − with PO 4 3− for coordination sites, which drives the crystallization of amorphous calcium phosphate into Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 F. Notably, 0.1 mol/L NaOH solution was identified as optimal for sorbent regeneration. Importantly, Vat-5.9 exhibited superior performance in treating domestic sewage, reaching saturation breakthrough significantly later than in industrial wastewater, thereby underscoring its safety for domestic water supplies. Both techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment indicated that HAP@Vaterite offers significant economic and health benefits, with a socio-economic value of 74,000 $/ adsorbent , alongside a net reduction in CO 2 emissions (1.80 tCO 2 -eq/t adsorbent ). This work establishes a practical framework for assessing the feasibility of green and cost-effective F − remediation, aligning with China's sustainable development objectives. Hydrothermal-assisted biomimetic synthesis of a brush-like Hap/PAN composite and its application for decontaminating metal ions

Hehe Guo,Huaijuan Zhou,Ping Jin,Wenjing Li,Yining Ma,Ioku Koji,Shidong Ji

In this work, a novel biomimetic mat consisting of brush-like polyacrylonitrile (PAN)–hydroxyapatite (Hap) composite fibers was successfully prepared by means of a combination of two simple but effective methods – electrospinning technology and vapor hydrothermal treatment. The backbone of the fiber is the PAN fiber with a diameter of 2–3 μm and the lateral branch is the Hap nanowires. In the biomimetic process, calcium phosphate (TCP) worked as the seed and it transferred to the Hap nanowire in situ and pierced the PAN fiber when it was cultured under a high temperature vapor. This mat is an ideal candidate material for decontaminating metal ions in terms of its convenience of recycling and high specific surface area. The as-obtained materials were characterized with X-ray diffractometry (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Moreover, adsorption experiments of the PAN/Hap composite fiber mat for Pb2+ were conducted. The results exhibited that the maximum adsorption quantity of the composite fiber mat for heavy metal Pb2+ was up to 433 mg g−1, and the Pb2+ adsorption process occurs through a two-step mechanism: rapid surface complexation followed by partial dissolution of hydroxyapatite and precipitation of pyromorphite.
