A facile and efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to produce hydrogen is very important for future energy. In this paper, amorphous manganese–cobalt nanosheets are successfully prepared by electrospinning on a foamed nickel substrate. It is found that the manganese (Mn) introduction in manganese–cobalt composites can simultaneously enhance their electrocatalytic performances. As a result, benefitting from the 3D structure, the self-supported Mn–Co hydroxides exhibits unprecedented HER activity with a relatively low overpotential of 100 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and has a possibility for the large-scale production of hydrogen. Graphic Abstract Amorphous PVP/Mn 4 Co nanofibers formed by electrospinning on Ni foam (NF) has remarkable catalytic activity and stability for HER after operation for 6 h in 1 M KOH, with a low overpotential of 0.1 V at 100 mA cm −2 , a low Tafel slope of 65.4 mV dec −1 .

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media is a promising strategy for sustainable hydrogen production, but the exploration of efficient and durable HER electrocatalysts is often hindered by the empirical and time-consuming nature of traditional synthesis. Herein, a machine learning (ML)–driven strategy combining Bayesian optimization is introduced to achieve the rational design of Ni 3 S 4 /Ni 3 Mo heterostructures for alkaline HER. By coupling predictive modeling with experimental feedback, this approach efficiently navigated a complex synthesis space and identified conditions yielding a structurally and electronically optimized catalyst. The optimized Ni 3 S 4 /Ni 3 Mo exhibits a vibrant morphological evolution—from compact buds to blooming petal-like structures—enabling enriched active sites and accelerated mass transport. Guided by Bayesian optimization, the optimized Ni 3 S 4 /Ni 3 Mo achieves a 10.5-fold enhancement in C dl and delivers an exceptionally low overpotential of 18.2 mV at 100 mA cm −2 , outperforming most reported transition-metal catalysts and even surpassing commercial Pt/C. Mechanistic insights from in situ Raman and DFT reveal that interfacial charge redistribution between Ni 3 S 4 and Ni 3 Mo optimizes H* adsorption (Δ G H* ≈ 0.04 eV) and significantly reduces the water-dissociation barrier (0.08 eV), thereby accelerating reaction kinetics. This work demonstrates how the ML-guided optimization can synergistically couple morphology control, interfacial engineering with electronic tuning, offering a generalizable framework for intelligent catalyst discovery and mechanistic understanding in electrochemical energy conversion.

High-entropy alloy nanoparticles (HEA NPs) attract considerable attention in electrocatalysis owing to their tunable electronic structures and enhanced catalytic activity enabled by multicomponent synergy. However, the optimization of multimetal electronic structures, particularly through electronegativity differences to maximize their hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in a single catalyst, remains technically challenging. In this work, PtFeNiCoX (X: Cu, Mo, Mn) HEA NPs with electronegativity-regulated HER and OER catalysis were synthesized via a transient high-temperature shock method (THTS), using carbonized wood (CW) as a self-supporting electrode substrate. The results demonstrate that the electronegativity differences among the mixed elements in HEA induced charge redistribution, generating high-activity Cu and Pt sites. These sites can simultaneously stabilize OH* and H* intermediates, thereby significantly improving water dissociation efficiency under alkaline conditions. At 10 mA cm–2, PtNiCoFeCu showed excellent HER and OER overpotentials of 10 mV and 164 mV, respectively, with high stability. As both the anode and cathode material in the overall water splitting, it required only 1.48 V to reach 10 mA cm–2. This work presents a cost-effective strategy for synthesizing high-entropy alloys as efficient electrocatalysts, demonstrating great potential for sustainable hydrogen production through water electrolysis.

It is well known that transition metal sulfides (TMS) (i.e., NiS 2 ) undergo electrochemical reconstructions to generate highly active Ni 3 S 2 during the process of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under overpotentials of < 500 mV. However, at higher overpotentials, Ni 3 S 2 can theoretically be further restructured into Ni and thus form Ni/Ni 3 S 2 heterogeneous interface structures, which may provide opportunities to further enhance HER activity of NiS 2 . Here, we selected NiS 2 as a model electrocatalyst and investigated the influence of the reconstruction results induced from regular to ultrahigh overpotentials on its electrocatalytic hydrogen precipitation performance. The experimental results showed that the most significant enhancement of hydrogen precipitation performance was obtained for the NiS 2 @CC-900 (900 means 900 mV overpotential) sample after the ultra-high overpotential induced reconstruction. Compared with the initial overpotential of 161 mV (10 mA cm –2 ), the overpotential of the reconstructed sample reduced by 67 mV (42%). The characterization results showed that an ultra-high overpotential of 900 mV induced deep reconstruction of NiS 2 , formed highly reactive Ni/Ni 3 S 2 heterogeneous interfaces, which is more conducive to improved HER performance and match well with theoretical calculations results. We demonstrated ultrahigh overpotential was an effective strategy to induce NiS 2 deeply reconstruction and significantly improve its HER performance, and this strategy was also applicable to CoS 2 and FeS 2 . This study provides an extremely simple and universal pathway for the reasonable construction of efficient electrocatalysts by induced TMS deeply reconstruction.

The pursuit of sustainable hydrogen production via water electrolysis urgently demands electrocatalysts reconciling industrial-grade activity, durability, and cost-effectiveness for the hydrogen evolution reaction. While transition metal selenides (TMSs) offer noble-metal alternatives with tunable electronic structures, monophasic variants suffer from compromised charge transfer kinetics, limited active site exposure, and cathodic degradation. Herein, we propose selenium anion electric field engineering via molybdenum ions regulated heterointerface construction in Ni 3 Se 4 /MoSe 2 heterojunctions anchored on nickel foam (denoted as Ni 3 Se 4 /MoSe 2 @NF). Multiscale mechanistic studies reveal that the reconstructed built-in electric field around the selenium anions in MoSe 2 demonstrates a lower hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔG H* = 0.166 eV) via d-band center, with accelerating interfacial charge transfer. The resultant catalyst achieves an ultralow overpotential of 60 mV at 10 mA cm −2 (η 10 ) with a Tafel slope of 65.17 mV dec −1 . Particularly noteworthy is its industrial-grade stability, which exhibits only a 20 mV (η 100 ) increase after 200 h of continuous operation in 1 M KOH, coupled with near-unity Faradaic efficiency (over 98 %). This work establishes a heterointerface microenvironment regulation paradigm to break the activity-stability trade-off, providing a universal design principle for durable, high-flux water electrolysis.

Tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) has been considered as a promising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) candidate due to its high activity, robust chemical stability, and earth-abundant resources. However, the inert basal planes and low electrical conductivity greatly hinder its development in HER. Increasingly, the density of active sites through the structural designing is one of the most effective strategies to enhance the HER performance. Herein, we report a facile one-step hydrothermal method for synthesizing flower-like WS 2 nanosheets for highly efficient HER. Besides, the effect of preparation temperature is also been discussed. The optimized WS 2 nanosheets exhibit the enhanced HER activity in strong acidic solutions with a low Tafel slope and a good stability. The improvement of the HER performance can be attributed to sheet-like nanostructures, which greatly increase the edge sites and defects, resulting in a high density of exposed active sites. Besides, these sheet-like nanostructures also can make the acidic electrolyte easily accessible to the surface of WS 2 and accelerate the electron transfer rate.

FeCo2O4/MoS2binary composite catalysts were prepared by the hydrothermal method and calcination method. In this paper, the morphology and structure of the materials were characterized by means of SEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS. It was found that MoS2has high activity and good stability in HER, and and it has more prospect than noble metal catalysts. In oxygen evolution chemical kinetics, its rich redox potential allowed it to adsorb OH−on (Co2+/Co3+, Fe2+/Fe3+) and enhanced the activity of OER. The cross-nanosheet structure of the FeCo2O4/MoS2composite catalyst exposed more catalytic sites and accelerated charge transfer to achieve more efficient mass transfer. FeCo2O4/MoS2as an anode and cathode was assembled into a two-electrode system in overall water splitting, which showed good catalytic activity. When the composite ratio of FeCo2O4to MoS2was 1:0.3, the composite catalyst had the best catalytic activity. The results show that when FeCo2O4/MoS2is used as a cathode and anode to assemble an alkaline cell, respectively, the voltage for total water electrolysis is 1.59 V at a current density of 10 mA cm−2in a 1 M KOH electrolyte, it can keep good stability in a 10 h test with electrolyzed water, and its current retention rate is 98.5%.

The traditional method of preparing hydrogen and oxygen as efficient clean energy sources mainly relies on the use of platinum, palladium, and other precious metals. However, the high cost and low abundance limit wide application of such metals. As such, one challenging issue is the development of low-cost and high-efficiency electrocatalysts for such purposes. In this study, we synthesized Co–FeS2/CoS2 heterostructures via a hydrothermal method for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Benefitting from their unique three-dimensional hierarchical nanostructures, Co-doped FeS2, and CoS2 formed heterostructures on Co–FeS2 petals, which bestowed remarkable electrocatalytic properties upon Co–FeS2/CoS2 nanostructures. Co–FeS2/CoS2 effectively catalyzed the OER with an overpotential of 278 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH solution, and also is capable of driving a current density −10 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of −103 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. The overpotential of the OER and HER only decreased by 5 mV and 3 mV after 1000 cycles. Our Co–FeS2/CoS2 materials may offer a promising alternative to noble metal-based electrocatalysts for water splitting.

The development of efficient bifunctional catalysts for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for reducing the cost of hydrogen production by water splitting. Herein, hollow microtubes composed of RuNi 1 Co 1 alloy nanoparticles uniformly embedded in the carbon matrix (RuNi 1 Co 1 @CMT) are prepared through a simple impregnation followed by reduction. Benefiting from the unique mosaic structure and the synergistic effect between Ru and NiCo, RuNi 1 Co 1 @CMT achieves more exposed active sites and improved reaction kinetics. As a consequence, RuNi 1 Co 1 @CMT exhibits considerable catalytic activities with the overpotentials of 78 mV for HER and 299 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. In addition, RuNi 1 Co 1 @CMT exhibits excellent stability for up to 30 h in both HER and OER processes at 20 mA cm −2 , which is attributed to the protection of the RuNi 1 Co 1 alloy particles by the carbon layer. Furthermore, the assembled RuNi 1 Co 1 @CMT || RuNi 1 Co 1 @CMT overall water splitting system shows a cell voltage of 1.58 V at 10 mA cm −2 . The density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the addition of Ru can optimize the hydrogen adsorption free energy of Ni and Co sites. Finally, a solar panel-driven water splitting device is built, which can realize green and sustainable hydrogen production. The fabrication of RuNi 1 Co 1 @CMT provides a new way for the preparation of effective alloy nanomaterials for energy storage and conversion.

Encapsulating metallic nanoparticles (NPs) with a graphitic carbon shell is a promising strategy to achieve highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and electrochemical overall water splitting (OWS). This work presents a simple and facile synthesis of graphitic carbon coated NixRuy alloys. The optimized catalyst (e-Ni0.6Ru0.4@C) displays an ultrafine morphology and outstanding HER and OER activities in alkaline media, which are among the best reported so far for various carbon-based electrocatalysts. Remarkably, the e-Ni0.6Ru0.4@C‖e-Ni0.6Ru0.4@C pair needs a low cell voltage of 1.51/1.62 V for driving OWS to reach 10/100 mA cm−2, far outperforming the benchmark electrode pair Pt/C‖RuO2. As expected, this carbon-based catalyst also exhibits superior durability as compared to that of precious catalysts. The experimental evidence combined with density functional theory (DFT) computations thus demonstrates for the first time that minor Ru alloying enables not only the morphological modulation but also the fine electronic modification of the catalyst, which both facilitate the overall electrochemical reactions on the carbon shell surface. Thus, our results may further shed light on how to design and optimize carbon-based electrocatalysts to achieve enhanced catalytic performance for OWS.

NiMo-based polyalloy catalyst is a non-precious metal-based high-entropy alloy catalyst that has been extensively studied in recent years. It exhibits superior electrochemical performance in electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production, and the combination of NiMo-based polyalloy catalysts with carbon black substrates is expected to produce better electrochemical supports. In this paper, we prepared a series of carbon-based high-entropy heterogeneous material catalysts using zero-dimensional carbon black, one-dimensional carbon nanotubes and two-dimensional graphene as substrates, respectively. Analytical results through structural characterization of the synthesized materials as well as electrochemical tests revealed that carbon black, which is in the form of nanoparticles, can be more tightly wrapped with Ni shells compared to tubular nanotubes and flake graphene, which can effectively increase the number of active sites, thus promoting the outstanding performance of the zero-dimensional carbon-based transition metal nanomaterial catalysts NiMoCoMnLa/CB@Ni in alkaline electrocatalytic hydrogen precipitation reaction . Driven by these findings, this work may provide new ideas in the pathway of rationally designing zero-dimensional carbon-based high-entropy alloy nanoparticle catalysts as efficient electrocatalysts in green hydrogen production processes.

Summary β-iron oxide hydroxide (β-FeOOH) had been proven to be an effective co-catalyst during H 2 evolution reaction (HER) process. In this research, a BiOCl/β-FeOOH heterojunction was successfully synthesized by a solid-state doping method. Then, the structure, composition, and photo-electrochemical properties of the prepared photocatalysts were studied. For the superior HER photocatalytic activity of ultrasmall β-FeOOH nanoparticles (NPs) and the formation of the BiOCl/β-FeOOH heterojunction, this heterojunction photocatalyst exhibited very superior photocatalytic performance in the HER process. Especially, when the amount of incorporated β-FeOOH NPs was appropriate, the BFOH-2 possessed the highest photocatalytic activity in HER process, and the HER rate was about 16.64 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 during illuminated time of 6 hours under visible light. When appropriate, ultrasmall β-FeOOH NPs were implanted into the structure of BiOCl, the BiOCl/β-FeOOH heterojunction interfaces would form for the existence of interfacial interactions. Therefore, this BiOCl/β-FeOOH heterojunction exhibited superior visible-light response, fast photo-carrier migration, and high-efficient separation of photo-carriers, so that the BFOH-2 heterojunction possessed high-efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) photocatalytic activity.
