Flexible Janus wood membrane with asymmetric wettability for high-efficient switchable oil/water emulsion separation

Wenbo Che,Lingyue Zhou,Qiaoru Zhou,Yanjun Xie,Yonggui Wang

Janus membranes have attracted much attention for switchable oil/water separation because they have opposite wetting behavior on each side. However, it remains a challenge to fabricate Janus membranes with asymmetric wettability from biomass by simple methods. Herein, we prepared a flexible Janus wood (JW) membrane by cutting the natural wood along the longitudinal direction, followed by a facile top-down approach. The hydrophobic lignin was removed from the wood to prepare a highly porous and superhydrophilic wood (SW) with underwater superoleophobicity. Then, one side of the SW was sprayed with a mixture of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane/SiO 2 nanoparticles to form a superhydrophobic surface that hardly affected the wettability of the other side. The obtained JW membrane maintains its selective wettability in harsh environments owing to its durability and stability. Furthermore, it has a switchable, high separation efficiency of >99% for both oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions, which can be attributed to the unique wettability and hierarchical micro/nano structure of the JW membrane. Notably, the three-dimensional interconnected micro/nanochannels (pits and nanopores) of the JW membrane are beneficial to the size-sieving effect during emulsion separation. At the same time, the layered channels (tracheids and vessels) enable multiple separations. JW membrane is sustainable, inexpensive, stable, and easy to manufacture, providing more implications for the innovation of biomass-based Janus separation materials in industrial wastewater treatment .

Selective separation of oil-in-water emulsion with high efficiency by bio-inspired Janus membrane

Cai YaHui,Chen DongYun,Li NaJun,Xu QingFeng,Li Hua,He JingHui,Lu JianMei

The efficient and rapid separation of oil from stabilized oil-in-water emulsions with micro/nanometer size is a global challenge. Owing to the low oil content in oil-in-water emulsions, separating the oil by simply controlling the surface wettability is difficult. Controlling the pore size of the membrane surface to achieve separation will lead to a sharp decrease in flux. Herein, inspired by cell membrane transportation, a hydrophilic/hydrophobic bifunctional Janus membrane for stable oil-in-water separation was prepared by simple surface polymerization and vapor diffusion. The prepared Janus membrane contained a hydrophobic side and hydrophilic polyamine layer. When used for oil-in-water emulsion separation, the polyamine layer accumulated micro/nanometer oil droplets, forming an oil layer on the hydrophobic surface. Water was retained by the 1 H ,1 H ,2 H ,2 H -perfluorooctyl trichlorosilane layer, allowing oil droplets to selectively permeate through the membrane, achieving the separation effect. As the pore size of the modified fabric was basically unchanged, the permeation flux was fast (1.53×10 3 Lm −2 h −1 ). Furthermore, the poly( N,N -dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) layer destroyed the emulsion stability, making the emulsion droplets aggregate without affecting the separation efficiency with fast permeation flux. Therefore, the prepared bifunctional Janus membrane shows great potential for actual wastewater treatment.

Exploiting the interfacial instability of liquid-infused Janus membranes for versatile liquid gating

Wanshun Deng,Rui Guo,Gang Wang,Zhixiang Zeng,Tianhui Ren,Shuaijun Pan

Hypothesis With varied affinities for distinct liquids, liquid/solid interfaces can exhibit different stability against external liquids. For liquid-infused Janus membranes with different surface chemistry, there may be significant osmotic pressure gradients across the membrane, facilitating liquid gating of various liquids in diverse systems. Such strategy may highly widen the application areas of liquid gating technology. Experiments Liquid-infused Janus membranes were prepared via the combination of hydroxyapatite (amphiphilic but more water-loving) on one side and 3-(dodecylamino) propane-1-sulfonic acid (amphiphilic but more oil-loving) on the other side and subsequent infusion of various liquids (water or oils). The gating property of them was studied for all the conditions and the application potential in various areas including medical and micro-reaction was also explored. Findings After being infused with certain liquids (i.e., water or oils), the obtained membranes displaying opposite affinity toward water and oils can universally gate immiscible liquids at a high rectification ratio in air and in liquids. The interfacial instability of liquid films on the reverse sides was found to be critical in the achievement of liquid gating. Moreover, such gating property is also applicable in the transportation of various soluble substances (ions and drugs) and facilitating the dislodgement of blood.

Unidirectional solute transfer using a Janus membrane

Ying Dong,Jing Li,Stig Pedersen-Bjergaard,Chuixiu Huang

A membrane as a selective barrier of mass transfer is of great importance for applications in analysis, environment, energy, and biology. Unidirectional solute transfer that would improve membrane process flow is a challenge. Here, macroscopic extreme wettability of membranes controlling microscopic solute transfer is presented. A Janus membrane is prepared by integrating underoil superhydrophobic (UOSH) and underwater superoleophobic (UWSO) surfaces. Without or with electric field, solutes pass through the Janus membrane from the UOSH side to the UWSO side, but are impeded from penetrating in the reverse direction. The UWSO surface has a high affinity toward solutes in water compared to the UOSH surface at their interface. The composite membrane realizes unidirectional solute transfer, which can be considered as a solute transfer diode. This study may promote the understanding of the correlation between macroscopic and microscopic interfacial behaviors and facilitate the design of interfacial materials for controllable solute transfer and separation.

Janus stainless steel mesh-based membrane with asymmetric wettability for highly efficient gravity-driven oil-water emulsion separation

Meng Zhu,Lingrui Zhang,Hong Ma,Ruiying Zhu,Yating Tan,Rui Wang,Xiaobo Gong,Yong Liu

With the asymmetric wettability of the membrane due to its unique transmission features and functions, the application of oil-water separation achieved rapid development. Nevertheless, their practical application is severely restricted due to poor mechanical durability and low flux in the absence of external pressure. Herein, the Janus ZIF-8/stainless steel mesh/polydopamine (DZIF-8/SSM/PDA) membrane was successfully prepared using electrodeposition , in-situ growth, and shell ligand exchange reaction methods. The Janus membrane surface was created through the combination of 5, 6-dimethylbenzimidazole (DMBIM) modified superhydrophobic nanoparticles ZIF-8 (DZIF), and PDA, exhibiting underwater superoleophobicity (UWOCA 156°), superhydrophobicity (WCA 154°), and excellent anti-oil (light and heavy oil) pollutants ability. By manipulating the molecular repulsion forces on the Janus membrane surface , a stable interfacial hydration layer is created in conjunction with the micro-nano structure. This combination enables the achievement of interfacial demulsification and gravity-driven separation of emulsified oil, according to the Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation process. The water-in-oil emulsion achieved an oil flux of 601 L m −2  h −1 with a separation efficiency of 99.1 %, while the oil-in-water emulsion demonstrated a water flux of 62 L m −2  h −1 with a separation efficiency of 99.7 %. The Janus DZIF-8/SSM/PDA demonstrated acid and alkali resistance, mechanical stability and reusability , and resistance to E. coli bacteria. Overall, this research anticipates advancing the production of durable asymmetric Janus membranes with superior separation efficiency under gravity, providing a novel solution for oil-water separation.

A lignin-wood Janus membrane with three-dimensional interconnected layered micro/nano channels for on-demand separation of surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions

Yifan Liu,Yufeng Miao,Zhuo Huang,Runxuan Wang,Yunyan Peng,Xiaolong Fang,Wenbo Che,Youming Yu

Oil/water emulsion wastewater is a typical industrial and domestic wastewater that is harmful to human health and the environment. However, it is still challenging to fabricate membrane materials for separating complex surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions from biomass in a facile and sustainable approach. Herein, paper industry waste lignin was prepared by self-assembly and hydrophobization into modified lignin nanospheres, which were sprayed onto delignified wood to develop a lignin-wood Janus membrane with superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic surfaces. The prepared Janus wood (JW) membrane maintains its selective wettability even under harsh conditions, demonstrating excellent durability and stability. Moreover, it can efficiently separate surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions on demand, with a separation efficiency of >99 %. It is due to the distinct wettability and hierarchical structure of JW membranes, which feature three-dimensional interconnected layered micro/nano channels (tracheids and vessels) that enable multiple and continuous separation of oil/water emulsions. In addition, the JW membrane maintains a stable and efficient oil/water emulsion separation efficiency after 10 cycles, which offers an efficient, cost-effective, sustainable, and scalable approach for applications of all-wood-based separators in the oily wastewater treatment field.

Janus polyvinylidene fluoride membranes fabricated with thermally induced phase separation and spray-coating technique for the separations of both W/O and O/W emulsions

Ji-Hao Zuo,Yi-Hang Gu,Chao Wei,Xi Yan,Yan Chen,Wan-Zhong Lang

Janus membrane is an emerging separation material due to its unique separation performance. The asymmetric surface wettability on its two surfaces is crucial for a Janus membrane. In this work, robust Janus polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes were prepared via thermal induced phase separation (TIPS) accompanied with spray-coating method. The two surfaces of TIPS-prepared PVDF membranes were rapidly deposited with polydopamine/polyethyleneimine (PDA/PEI) and micro-/nano-scale silica particles crosslinking with diphenyldichlorosilane respectively. The spray-coating endows the Janus membranes with superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity on its opposite surfaces. The optimized membrane of M-A0.9B0.2 presents an asymmetric surface wettability. Its hydrophilic surface has a water contact angle (WCA) of 11.2°, while the hydrophobic surface has a WCA of 169.9° as well as a sliding angle of <1°. The superhydrophilic surface allows water to quickly pass through the membrane and oil phase is trapped; while oil can penetrate through the membrane and water is rejected by the superhydrophobic surface. The Janus membranes show excellent separation performance with the highest permeation of 2060.5 L m −2  h −1 ·bar −1 accompanied with above 94.0% oil rejection for toluene-in-water emulsion and the highest permeation of 1769.0 L m −2  h −1 ·bar −1 accompanied with above 97.0% water rejection for water-in-toluene emulsion using the opposite surfaces.

In situ mussel-inspired Janus membranes using catechol and polyethyleneimine as the additives for highly efficient oil/water emulsions separation

Hou-Ying Ma,Yi-Ning Hu,Hao Yang,Li-Jing Zhu,Gang Wang,Zhi-Xiang Zeng,Ling-Hui Wang

Janus membranes (JMs) with asymmetrical wettability have been fabricated by (co)deposition of dopamine and its catechol derivatives on the hydrophobic substrates for oil/water emulsions separation, while it remains to be desired to simplify the preparation processes. Here, poly(vinylidene fluoride) membranes using catechol and polyethyleneimine as the additives were fabricated by non-solvent phase inversion on the non-woven fabric. Hydrophilic polycatechol and polyethyleneimine (PCCh-PEI) aggregates migrated on the top side of the fabricated membranes, improving their hydrophilicity. Furthermore, the hydrophobic back surface with irregular nano/micropores and lots of PVDF spherulites was gained after peeling off the supporting fabric. As a result, the as-prepared Janus membranes showed excellent emulsion separation, stability, and durability, which can potentially be used for unidirectional liquid collection with lossless transportation. This work opens a new and facile way for the fabrication of JMs with asymmetric wettability toward the versatile separation of oil/water emulsions.

Janus membranes with controllable asymmetric configurations for highly efficient separation of oil-in-water emulsions

Jing Yang,Hao-Nan Li,Zhi-Xiong Chen,Ai He,Qi-Zhi Zhong,Zhi-Kang Xu

Janus membranes (JMs) with opposite wettability have brought about new opportunities to tackle the challenging issues encountered in oil/water separation. However, these achievements suffer from empirical availability for the separation of oil-in-water emulsions, lacking a controllable way to tune the synergistic effect of asymmetric configurations, which is the “inner” driving force for practical performance. Herein, the role of the asymmetric configuration is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated in the Janus structural design, membrane fabrication, and separation performance for oil-in-water emulsions. These significant insights are particularly gained by analyzing Young–Laplace capillary pressures, measuring the adhesive forces between the oil and membrane surface, and monitoring the demulsification and oil transportation processes. Fluorescence imaging has been used to in situ visualize the separation process and then a mechanism is firstly proposed as demulsification followed by rapid unidirectional oil transportation for surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions. The two successive processes are strongly governed by the controllable asymmetric configuration of the JMs. An efficient oil separation can, therefore, be achieved from surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions with a wide size distribution (from nanometers to microns) by optimizing these two stages via tuning the hydrophilic/hydrophobic configuration and surface charge property of the JMs. Therefore, this work is expected to yield a design principle and guideline for developing JMs with applicability in the practical separation of oil-in-water emulsions.

Superwettable Janus nylon membrane for multifunctional emulsion separation

Longzhu Zheng,Hongqiang Li,Xuejun Lai,Wei Huang,Zengyue Lin,Xingrong Zeng

With the increasing environmental pollution caused by oily wastewater and oil spill accidents, many superwettable materials have been prepared and applied for the separation of oil-water mixtures. However, the fabrication of superwettable materials for multifunctional water purification including oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsion separation, dyes degradation and heavy metal ions removal still remains challenging. Herein, we propose a facile method to fabricate a superwettable Janus nylon membrane through in situ generation of silver (Ag) particles immobilized by polydopamine and asymmetric chemical modification with dodecanethiol (NDM) and l -cysteine (L-cys) on the positive and negative surfaces, respectively. The positive surface modified by NDM exhibited superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity, and the negative surface chemically bonded with L-cys possessed opposite wettability with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity. The positive and negative surfaces of the Janus membrane were respectively applied for the separations of water-in-oil emulsions and oil-in-water emulsions, and the separation efficiencies all reached above 99%, also demonstrating great reusability and wide adaptability. In addition, the Janus membrane presented not only outstanding performance of degrading methylene blue (MB) with high efficiency above 97.3%, but also excellent capability of absorbing heavy metal ions in the process of emulsion separation. The fabrication processes are facile, mild, and no special equipment is involved, and our findings conceivably provided a new strategy to fabricate superwettable Janus membrane for multifunctional emulsion separation and wastewater purification.

Hollow fiber membranes with Janus surfaces for continuous deemulsification and separation of oil-in-water emulsions

Hao-Nan Li,Jing Yang,Zhi-Kang Xu

Janus membranes with asymmetric surface wettability are regarded as promising materials for oil/water separation. However, their performances and applications are still limited by diminutive flat structure, dead-end filtration mode, batchwise separation process, low disposal capacity and heavy oil preference. Herein, Janus hollow fiber membranes (JHFMs) are reported to be fabricated by a circulated co-deposition of polydopamine/polyelectrolyte onto lumen surfaces of membranes for addressing these issues. A thin, hydrophilic and charged layer is uniformly and thickness-controllably coated to achieve an asymmetric wettability and a deemulsification function simultaneously. The as-prepared JHFMs feature a high efficiency to separate surfactant stabilized oil-in-water emulsions through successive deemulsification and unidirectional oil delivery. Furthermore, the membrane module assembled by multiple pieces of JHFMs exhibits a large-scale and remarkable ability to separate both heavy and light oils from their oil-in-water emulsions in a cross-flow filtration mode. More importantly, the hollow fiber module shows a record-high recovery ratio toward light oil compared with flat membranes. The purities of filtrates and feeds after the separation totally meet the international purification standards. This work provides an exhilarated opportunity of Janus membranes in the practical application of oily wastewater separation, especially for those surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions.

Monolithic and self-roughened Janus fibrous membrane with superhydrophilic/omniphobic surface for robust antifouling and antiwetting membrane distillation

Zhigao Zhu,Lingling Zhong,Xuemei Chen,Wei Zheng,Jinlong Zuo,Gaofeng Zeng,Wei Wang

The treatment of hypersaline wastewaters with membrane distillation (MD) is significant but challenging, owing to the critical limitations of severe membrane wetting and fouling. Herein, a monolithic and self-roughened Janus fibrous membrane (FM) with asymmetrical superwettability was developed via sequential electrospinning and electrospraying in combination with thermal treatment. We detailedly discussed the formation mechanism of the roughness on the fiber surface via electrospinning/electrospraying technique and explored the asymmetrical wettability and the monolithic performance of Janus FM for the synergistic resistance of membrane wetting and fouling. Benefiting from the high in-air water contact of 157° of the omniphobic surface, the high underwater oil contact angle of 156° of the superhydrophilic skin layer, as well as the monolithic performance of the resultant membrane, the newly developed Janus FM achieves a high water flux of over 27 L m −2  h −1 and high desalination efficiency of ~100% when desalination of the simulated hypersaline wastewater composed of 3.5 wt% of NaCl, 0.1 g of SDBS and 1.0 g of lubricating oil. The presented strategy on Janus FM fabrication is believed to open a new direction to prepare monolithic, self-roughened, and asymmetrically superwettable Janus FM and applied in a wide field of other selective separation applications.
