Conversion of waste sludge into biochar-based catalysts has been considered as a feasible alternative for sludge treatment, and dewatering of waste sludge is a key process for further treatment and disposal. In this study, KMnO 4 was used as both a chemical conditioner to assist Fe-rich sludge dewatering and a chemical modifier to incorporate Mn oxides into the biochar catalysts. Results showed that the sludge dewatering was substantially improved when KMnO 4 dosage was above 13% DS (dry sludge), and more than 99% of Mn was retained in the sludge cake. After pyrolysis of the sludge cake, a series of Mn,Fe-codoped biochar catalysts (assigned to x -Mn-FeBC) were obtained. The catalysts could activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) well for complete removal of phenolic contaminants including phenol, bisphenol A (BPA) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) over a wide pH range (2.5–12) with the co-existence of water constituents. After 5 consecutive cycles, the catalytic performance of 13%-Mn-FeBC was decreased by half, but it could be fully recovered by simple calcination at 600 o C. It was proposed that radical and non-radical oxidation processes worked together for organic degradation, but non-radical pathways involving 1 O 2 oxidation and electron transfer between PMS and organic played more crucial roles. This study proposed a novel sludge treatment process by combining enhanced sludge dewatering with efficient catalyst preparation, and the as-prepared catalysts were promising in PMS activation and organic degradation.

In this study, a novel adsorbent was synthesized through the entrapment of KMnO 4 modified biochar (MB) in poly(vinyl alcohol)/sodium alginate hydrogel bead (PSMB) and then tested to determine its capacity for removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The maximum Cu(II) adsorption capacity estimated with Langmuir isotherm modeling was 87.07 mg/g of PSMB, which was higher than that of previously reported adsorbents. PSMB had a good selectivity towards Cu(II) as well as high anti-interference ability. The main species for Cu(II) adsorption likely were the inner-sphere Cu-O complexes, as indicated by the results of spectral analyses. The PSMB was easily collected and exhibited a minimal loss of adsorption capacity after 10 adsorption/regeneration cycles. The effective removal of Cu(II) from environmental water samples with relative low treatment cost indicated a possibility for practical application.

Postharvest fruit losses are largely driven by a short shelf-life resulting from ethylene-induced ripening, microbial spoilage, and moisture loss. In this study, a multifunctional coating was fabricated on Moso bamboo substrates via a simple two-step process. The coating integrates superhydrophobic, ethylene-scavenging, and antibacterial functions, utilizing rosin, nano-ZnO, Artemisia argyi powder, nano-CaCO3, and KMnO4. The bamboo with this coating acts as an indirect preservation platform, regulating the storage microenvironment to reduce ethylene accumulation, microbial proliferation, and water loss. The system is cost-effective, biosafe, and scalable for practical use. Shelf-life tests demonstrated significant extension for both climacteric and nonclimacteric fruits: bananas (from 5 to 21 days, ≥200%), strawberries (1–2 to 5 days, ≥150%), blueberries (5–7 to 15 days, ≥114%), cherry tomatoes (4–7 to 14 days, ≥100%), and sweet cherries (5–7 to 14 days, ≥100%). The synergistic effect of ethylene adsorption, moisture barrier, and contact-plus vapor-phase antibacterial action contributes to the broad-spectrum efficacy of this approach. These findings support this coating as a promising passive packaging material for fresh produce preservation.
