Decoupling densification from grain growth: Two-step sintering for high-performance KNN-based piezoelectric-transparent ceramics

Qifa Lin,Gaolei Dong,Jinfeng Lin,Hao Yan,Min Gao,Chunlin Zhao,Cong Lin,Xiao Wu

Lead-free potassium sodium niobate (KNN)-based piezoelectric-transparent ceramics exhibit challenges including insufficient densification, excessive grain growth, and severe K/Na volatilization during conventional sintering. Here, we systematically compare one-step sintering with two-step sintering for the (1- x %)[(K 0.5 Na 0.5 ) 0.97 Ca 0.03 Nb 0.99 Zn 0.01 O 3 ]- x %Sr(Sc 0.5 Nb 0.5 )O 3 ceramics. Two-step sintering decouples densification from grain growth by leveraging the kinetic difference between grain boundary diffusion and migration, achieving refined grains, improved relative density, and effective suppression of K and Na volatilization. Moreover, it promotes the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition, increasing the fraction of tetragonal and pseudocubic phases and enhancing overall lattice symmetry. Consequently, the optimal ceramic achieves superior optical transmittance (52.2% at 800 nm) and improved ferroelectric/dielectric/piezoelectric properties, with a piezoelectric coefficient of 128 pC/N, approximately 21% higher than that of the one-step sintering counterpart. This work demonstrates that two-step sintering constitutes a highly effective strategy for simultaneously achieving high transparency and strong piezoelectric response in KNN-based ceramics.

Synthesis of lead-free piezoelectric potassium sodium niobates for the preparation of anti-fouling KNN porous membrane

Hanjun Jiang,Haoming Wang,Zhouyi Zhu,Xianfu Chen,Minghui Qiu,Yiqun Fan

Potassium sodium niobates (KNNs) have garnered significant attention owing to their lead-free nature and potential for use in self-cleaning membranes. This paper presents the synthesis of (K 0.5 Na 0.5 )NbO 3 materials for the fabrication of porous membranes, which enable in situ ultrasonic resonance to effectively eliminate contaminants from the membrane surface . KNN powder was synthesized via solid-state reactions, and the membranes were prepared using conventional sintering techniques. The effects of ball-milling time and calcination temperature on the phase structure, pore size, permeance, flexural strength , chemical stability, and piezoelectric properties were comprehensively investigated. The optimal membranes exhibited an average pore size of approximately 300 nm, a porosity of 23 %, and permeance of 220 L m −2  h −1 bar −1 at a sintering temperature of 1050 °C. A polarized electrical field with a strength of 1 kV/mm was applied to the membranes, resulting in an ultrasonic response of 20 mV at an excitation voltage of 20 V with a frequency of 200 kHz. Furthermore, the in situ anti-fouling performance was evaluated by conducting filtration tests on a 500 ppm oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion, demonstrating that the stationary flux increased by 46.7 % when subjected to an excitation voltage of 60 V.

Enhanced Extrinsic Piezoelectric Contribution and Microscopic Origin of Grain Size Effect in Lead-Free KNN-Based Ceramics

Jinfeng Lin,Jianling Peng,Shengnan Wang,Yin Hua,Jin Qian,Shuhan Zhang,Hong Liu,Cheng Shi,Zhen Yang,Qingwei Liao,Jiwei Zhai

(K,Na)NbO3 (KNN)-based ceramics are considered among the most promising lead-free piezoelectric materials, despite the numerous challenges encountered during the sintering process. To better understand the sintering behavior of KNN-based ceramics, we adopted an innovative approach combining powder activity modulation with a two-step sintering process, successfully obtaining samples with diverse grain morphologies in the KNNTa-BNN ceramics, including uniformly distributed small grains, large grains, and even single-crystalline-like oversized grains. Comprehensive structural analysis reveals that the formation of large grains is associated with the abnormal grain growth. In this process, surface activity factors of calcined powder serve as the primary determinants of grain evolution pathways, while elemental segregation acts as a superimposed perturbing factor. Owing to the differences in T phase content and internal stress between large and small grains, Raman spectroscopy technology was employed to effectively distinguish them. The increase in grain size leads to a rise in long-range ordered non-180° domains, significantly enhancing the extrinsic contribution. As a result, the 6Ta ceramics with appropriately large grain sizes (∼31.65 μm) exhibit excellent comprehensive piezoelectric performance (d33 ∼ 315 pC/N, TC ∼ 390 °C), making it highly competitive among KNN-based ceramics. When the single-crystalline-like oversized grains were developed, the piezoelectric performance (d33 > 500 pC/N) can be further enhanced. This work enriches the grain growth theory of KNN-based ceramics and offers a potential route to high-performance single crystals.

Multi-mode optical modulation and superior energy storage in Eu/La co-doped KNN transparent ferroelectric ceramics

Chunxiao Lu,Pengyu Li,Ye Zhao,Qiwei Zhang,Shuai Li,Yong Li,Zhongzhi Wang,Liwen Zhang,Xihong Hao

Ferroelectric transparent ceramics serve as pivotal functional materials with inherently tunable polarization. However, addressing the intrinsic trade-off between high optical transparency and robust ferroelectricity remains critical for breakthroughs in multifunctional optoelectronic coupling applications. Herein, designing relaxor ferroelectric transparent ceramics via rare-earth doping is an effective strategy, which refines grain size, introduces polar nanoregions and induces high-symmetry phase structure. It synergistically achieves high transmittance and polarization, laying the foundation for one-structure multi-photoelectric-effects coupled applications. Accordingly, superior energy storage density ( W tot  = 10.5 J/cm 3 , W rec  = 7.0 J/cm 3 ) and optical transmittance (78 % at 780 nm) are simultaneously realized in Eu 3+ /La 3+ co-doped K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 (KNN) ceramics, along with excellent photochromic-induced transmittance and luminescence reversible modulation (ΔAbs = 19.35 %, ΔR t  = 92.5 %), outperforming previously reported KNN-based multifunctional ceramics in terms of comprehensive performance. This study proposes a viable approach to pave the way for constructing smart materials that can modulate photoelectric performance while extending their functionality.

High-entropy strategy for enhanced energy storage performance in BNT-ST-KNN relaxor ferroelectrics under moderate electric fields

Li-Qian Cheng,Zhiping Wang,Xin Li,Pengcheng Wang,Qingna Li,Yue Wang,Weibin Cai

Advanced lead-free energy storage ceramics play a critical role in the development of next-generation pulse power capacitors. However, it remains challenging to attain high recoverable energy density ( W rec ) and efficiency ( η ) within a moderate electric field environment. In this study, the evolution of energy storage performance with increasing configurational entropy change Δ S config (Δ S config  = 1.09R, 1.56R, 1.78R, 1.84R) was systematically investigated in Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 -SrTiO 3 -K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 (BNT-ST-KNN) ceramics. The resulting high-entropy lead-free relaxor ferroelectrics achieved a W rec of 5.3 J/cm 3 and an η of 83%, representing a nearly 76% increase in energy storage density compared to low-entropy ones in BNT-ST-KNN system. The superior energy storage performance is attributed to strong multiple local distortions and an enhanced breakdown field. Furthermore, the ceramics exhibit excellent frequency and temperature stability, as well as robust charging/discharging performance with thermal stability. These results indicate that increasing Δ S config is a practical strategy for designing high-performance dielectrics, promoting the development of capacitor technologies.

Experimental and First-Principles Investigation of PDA@KNN/P(VDF-TrFE) Composite Films: Interfacial Effects and Piezoelectric Enhancement

Quanbin Ma,Zhihua Zheng,Rui Li,Shi Feng,Juqi Wang,Haoyang Chen,Hongjun Qian,Fangping Ouyang,Xiaolong Yao,Shishang Guo

Flexible piezoelectric sensors with high output and long-term stability are critically limited by low polar phase content and inefficient interfacial electromechanical coupling in polymer-based systems. Here, we report a high-performance flexible piezoelectric sensor based on a PDA-engineered PDA@KNN/P(VDF-TrFE) electrospun composite, achieving simultaneous enhancement of β-phase crystallinity, interfacial stress transfer, and piezoelectric output. Owing to the bioinspired PDA interfacial layer and electrospinning-induced chain alignment, the optimized composite exhibits an ultrahigh β-phase fraction of 85.5%, significantly higher than pristine P(VDF-TrFE) (∼51%). The piezoelectric sensor delivers a high output voltage of 30 V, an ultrasensitive pressure response of 0.48 V·kPa–1, and excellent durability with <3% signal degradation over 3000 loading cycles, outperforming most reported PVDF-based piezoelectric sensors. First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that PDA-mediated interfacial coupling significantly lowers the interfacial formation energy (−3.27 eV), induces directional charge transfer, and reduces the work function, thereby enhancing interfacial polarization and electromechanical response. Furthermore, the sensor is successfully integrated into a self-powered smart wrist pressure monitoring system, enabling real-time detection of mechanical stimuli during fitness training. This work demonstrates a performance-driven interfacial engineering strategy for high-output, durable, and lead-free flexible piezoelectric sensors, with strong potential for wearable electronics and self-powered sensing applications.

Phase Boundary Design and Electrical Properties of Sb/Ta/Li Co-doped KNN-Based Pb-Free Piezoelectric Ceramics

Yang Shengyan,Chang Niannian,Han Mengyuan,Zhang Yang

Pb-free piezoelectric ceramic materials (K 0.48 Na 0.48 Li 0.04 )(Nb 0.92 Ta 0.08− x Sb x )O 3 (KNLNTS) were designed and prepared. The effects of varied Sb/Ta doping on the physical structure, surface morphology, and electrical characteristics of ceramics were also studied. The perovskite structure is present in all of the doped ceramic samples without any secondary phase (when x  < 0.05). All of the doped ceramic samples have a Curie temperature ( T C ) above 300°C. At the same time, the orthorhombic–tetragonal phase transition temperature ( T O–T ) is pushed closer to ambient temperature. Doping with Sb/Ta/Li changed the electrical characteristics of the samples and increased their piezoelectric properties. At x  = 0.03, the KNLNTS sample has the best piezoelectric properties: d 33  = 215 pC/N, Pr = 26.08 μC/cm 2 , T C  = 342.6°C.

Synergistic Defect and Phase Engineering in KNN-Based Ceramics Enable Giant Electro-Strain with Superior Symmetry at Low Sintering Temperatures

Zhenyong Cen,Zuohan Li,Yuwei Lu,Changrong Zhou,Nengneng Luo,Xiaoming Shi,Xin Zhang,Kezhen Hui,Zhongshang Dou,Ze Xu

Fabricating potassium sodium niobate (KNN)-based materials that simultaneously exhibit high electro-strain and high bipolar strain symmetry at reduced sintering temperatures (Tsinter) is challenging. This study demonstrates that the synergistic effect of Ti ion doping and a reducing atmosphere significantly enhances lattice activity, thereby lowering Tsinter by nearly 160 °C. Reducing Tsinter is more effective than B-site Ti substitution in suppressing oxygen vacancy concentration, which consequently diminishes the defect polarization (PD) and weakens the internal bias field (Ei). Furthermore, the 3% Ti dopant promotes the formation of small-sized nanodomains via constructing an R/O/T multiphase coexistence. This strategy synergistically tailors both defect and multiphase engineering, resulting in nanodomains and a weak PD. The combined effect of these features flattens and symmetrizes the Landau energy profile, yielding a high electro-strain coefficient (d33* = 554 pm/V) and a superior bipolar strain symmetry (β = 0.61%). The developed KNN-based materials show great potential for cofiring with low-cost internal electrodes, enabling the production of economical multilayer devices with a large electro-strain.

Wireless electrical stimulation generated by piezoelectric nanomaterial promotes the dental pulp regeneration via regulating mitochondrial Ca2+/PKA signaling pathway

Jianmao Zheng,Jiyuan Zuo,Cairong Xiao,Qining Guo,Xiaobin Fu,Chengyun Ning,Peng Yu

The induction of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) into odontogenic differentiation is a cutting-edge method of dental pulp regeneration treatment. However, it remains a challenge to develop biomaterials and therapies that can induce odontogenic differentiation. Here, we propose a wireless electrical stimulation strategy to induce DPSCs odontogenic differentiation via K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 piezoelectric nanoparticles (KNN) and polarized KNN (PKNN), which can be endocytosed by DPSCs. In vitro, several odontogenic differentiation indexes were also increased in DPSCs treated with KNN and PKNN, and the increase was more obvious in the PKNN group. Intracellular wireless electrical field promoted mitochondrial calcium concentration via mitochondrial calcium unidirectional transporter (MCU), increased the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and induced odontogenic differentiation through the activation of the cAMP-PKA signaling pathway. In vivo, dental pulp-like tissue was induced by electrical stimulation wirelessly with KNN and PKNN, which was more clinically friendly compared with the wired device, and the induction was more obvious in the PKNN group consistent with in vitro experiments. In conclusion, this work demonstrates the potential of PKNN as an effective stimulus that can induce odontogenic differentiation of DPSCs and be applied to dental pulp regeneration treatment.
