Exploring the application of carboxymethyl konjac glucomannan (CMK) in strain sensor is of great significance to expand the applications of konjac glucomannan (KGM) and its derivatives. Herein, CMK and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were used as substrates to prepare the hydrogels with dual characteristic networks. The primary network formed via the PVA crystallized zone was constructed via the freeze-thawing (F-T) treatments. By soaking with the Na + /Ca 2+ mixed solutions, the secondary network was constructed by coordinating Ca 2+ with carboxymethyl groups of CMK. Although the coordination of Ca 2+ -CMK degraded crystallizability of PVA, the salting-out effect of Na + enhanced the aggregation of CMK/PVA chains, densifying network structure. Accordingly, the overall mechanical properties and the anti-freezing performance of the hydrogel were improved remarkably. The as-obtained hydrogel could be well used as a soft strain sensor to detect human body motions and identify text signals. This work provides an attractive path of opening up new application scenario for CMK or other derivatives of KGM in the fields beyond food and biomedical applications.

In this study, a novel composite sponge composed of konjac glucomannan (KGM) and silk fibroin (SF) was fabricated, with citric acid (CA) employed as a crosslinker and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) incorporated to enhance antimicrobial performance. Through CA-mediated crosslinking and freeze-drying, an interpenetrating porous structure was generated, leading to significant improvements in mechanical integrity and structural stability. Optimization of the ratios of KGM, SF, and CA resulted in strengthened intermolecular interactions, which contributed to superior water absorption, retention capacity, rheological behavior, and antibacterial activity. The incorporation of Ag NPs endowed the composite with strong bacteriostatic properties, while in vitro cytocompatibility assays confirmed favorable biocompatibility. Moreover, in vivo wound healing and ex vivo hemostasis studies in animal models demonstrated enhanced tissue regeneration and effective hemostatic capability. In conclusion, these results indicate that the KGM/SF/Ag NPs composite sponge possesses considerable potential as a multifunctional wound dressing for clinical application. Graphical In this study, a novel composite sponge composed of konjac glucomannan (KGM) and sericin (SF) was utilized, with citric acid (CA) serving as the crosslinking agent. Its excellent properties were demonstrated through characterization methods including UV-Vis, FT-IR, XRD, and SEM. Notably, the incorporation of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) significantly enhanced the antimicrobial properties. The prepared sponge also demonstrated the ability to promote wound healing and angiogenesis.

Konjac glucomannan (KGM) gel has attracted widespread interest in the field of food. However, the low texture properties of gel limit its further application. In this study, the effect of KGM powder under different processing times (8 h, 12 h, 24 h and 48 h) and temperatures (4 °C, −18 °C, −80 °C) on the texture properties of gels were investigated. According to result of texture profile analysis (TPA) and puncture test, the gel prepared by pretreatment showed good texture characteristics. The gel prepared by freezing KGM powder at −18 °C for 8 h has the best gel strength in the sample, which is 1.6 times that of native KGM. The molecular weight of KGM decreased significantly after pretreatment (from 12.30 × 10 5 Da to 0.29 × 10 5 Da). In addition, low temperature and freezing treatment can influence the rheological behavior and regulate water composite in gel. According to experimental result, it can be attributed to that low temperature and the growth of ice crystal can make structures denser, promote KGM molecular chain entangled and increase the number of hydrogen bond . This study provides a convenient and effective method for improving the gel properties.

Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) derived from sodium alginate have attracted considerable attention. However, their practical application is limited by poor saline absorption and water retention. In this study, a fully biomass-derived SAP was fabricated from sodium alginate and konjac glucomannan via a two-step crosslinking strategy using CaCl 2 and borax as crosslinkers. The microstructure, chemical structure, thermal stability and composition of the optimized SAP were characterized in detail. The dual-crosslinked network, formed through Ca 2+ -carboxylate coordination and dynamic borate ester bonds, enhanced saline tolerance while maintaining structural integrity. The partial disruption of the Ca 2+ crosslinking network by Na + ions relaxed the polymer network to facilitate saline uptake, whereas reversible borate ester bonds enabled network rearrangement and water retention. The optimized SAP exhibited absorption capacities of 35.87 g/g in 0.9 wt% NaCl solution, 18.43 g/g in artificial urine, outperforming most fully biomass-based SAPs and the commercial acrylate-based SAP. Notably, its saline water retention ratio reached 65.07% after centrifugation. Moreover, the optimized SAP achieved an 85.24% biodegradation within 28 days. In summary, the fully biomass-based dual-crosslinked SAP simultaneously improves saline absorbency, water retention, and biodegradability, highlighting its strong potential for hygiene product applications.

In this study, a novel multifunctional biosensor was developed based on the synergistic cross-linking of Konjac glucomannan (KGM) and κ-Carrageenan (KC). This biosensor exhibits high sensitivity for detecting triple signals: temperature, humidity, and strain. This matrix demonstrates excellent mechanical toughness (elongation at break >300 %) and a low Young's modulus (173.017 ± 1.51 kPa). This material exhibits a high thermal sensitivity of 1.67 %°C −1 in temperature detection, and a linear response range of −15 % to 45 % was achieved within the temperature range of 4–40 °C. For humidity sensing, it provides a three-stage linear response with sensitivities of −89.75 %/% RH (0–40 % RH), −182.21 %/% RH (40–75 % RH), and −53.45 %/% RH (75–95 % RH). In terms of the strain sensing performance, this material demonstrates excellent wide-range detection capability (1–350 % strain), with a response value of approximately 875 %, and it also has high sensitivity (GF = 2.54 ± 0.06). Compared with traditional biomass-based gel sensors, the response limit of this sensor has been significantly increased while maintaining higher sensitivity. Experiments confirmed that the sensor can be monitored via resistance signals and exhibits stable performance (>2000 cycles) in flexible wearable applications such as human breathing monitoring and joint motion tracking, offering an innovative solution for intelligent medical monitoring and environmentally friendly electronic skin development.

Bone tissue engineering microspheres have become a prominent focus in bone repair research. This is due to their potential for targeted therapy and controlled drug release. The current research direction of bone tissue engineering microspheres primarily emphasizes composite microspheres. In this context, konjac glucomannan (KGM) has emerged as a promising composite microsphere preparation material for bone tissue engineering due to its exceptional water-absorbing and swelling properties, as well as its high biocompatibility. In order to expand the application of KGM in the field of bone tissue engineering, microspheres were designed and prepared in this paper by using KGM, hydroxyapatite (HA), and sodium alginate (SA). The quaternary amination modification of KGM was carried out to prepare the white flocculated Cationic Konjac Glucomannan (CKGM). CKGM was prepared in an amorphous state, and FT-IR and 1 H NMR results proved the successful synthesis of CKGM. The preparation of KGM/SA/HA and CKGM/SA/HA microspheres with rough surfaces involved emulsification, cross-linking, and coating methods. These microspheres exhibited absorption peaks for SA and CKGM. In addition, the XRD diffraction peaks of the two were found to be essentially identical to those of HA. The experimental results demonstrated that the drug release process of both drug-carrying microspheres was pH-responsive, with a direct correlation between the pH level and the cumulative release rate, with lower pH values corresponding to higher release rates. And the cumulative release rate of CKGM/SA/HA@DOX microspheres was slightly lower than that of KGM/SA/HA@DOX microspheres. Secondly, both microspheres had good biocompatibility, thermal stability and bacteriostatic properties.

In this study, the gelation mechanism of konjac glucomannan (KGM)/κ-carrageenan (KC) composite hydrogels at different mass ratios and its controlled release ability to lysozyme (Ly) were investigated. With the increase of KGM proportion, water holding capacity (WHC) and hardness first increased and then decreased, and reached the maximum when the mass ratio of KGM to KC was 1:2. Rheological tests showed that the viscoelasticity of the composite hydrogels can be effectively adjusted by changing the mixing ratio of KGM and KC. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetry confirmed that the thermal stability of the composite hydrogels was enhanced by hydrogen bonding as the main interaction force between KGM and KC. The porous gel network was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). With the increase of KGM ratio, the pore size first decreased and then increased. In addition, adjusting the ratio of KGM and the pH of release environment can enhance the controlled release effect of KC on Ly by the in vitro release experiment of Ly. Overall, these findings provide a theoretical basis for the development of performance-enhanced composite hydrogels for drug-controlled release.

The stability enhancement of proanthocyanidin-loaded liposomes (PC-Lip) via surface decoration with oxidized konjac glucomannan (OKGM) was investigated. The encapsulation efficiency and drug loading capacity of OKGM-coated PC-Lip (OKGM-PC-Lip) rose significantly. The average size and PDI of OKGM-PC-Lip increased, while the zeta potential decreased compared to those of PC-Lip. PC-Lip membrane fluidity reduced after coating with OKGM. The morphology of OKGM-PC-Lip showed that OKGM “halo layer” was formed on the liposome surface. Hydrogen bonding played an indispensable role in the combination between OKGM and PC-Lip, and the phase transition temperature of PC-Lip slightly increased after coating with OKGM. The retention rate of OKGM-PC-Lip was higher than that of PC-Lip at extreme pH. In vitro release, no significant difference in cumulative release was detected between OKGM-PC-Lip and PC-Lip at gastric stage, while the cumulative release rate of OKGM-PC-Lip was remarkably lower than that of PC-Lip at intestinal stage. The antioxidant activity of OKGM-PC-Lip was notably higher than that of PC-Lip. These results suggested that the resistance of PC-Lip to external influences was fruitfully enhanced after coating with OKGM. Compared with other polysaccharides, OKGM-coated liposomes may be more promising and advantageous in functional foods due to the polysaccharide's benefits to human health.

To meet the challenge of microbial contamination of food, smart packaging materials with active controlled-release functions have become a research hotspot. In this study, a humidity-responsive antimicrobial composite film was constructed by introducing cinnamaldehyde@β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes (CIN@β-CD ICs) into a konjac glucomannan/polyvinyl alcohol/lithium chloride (KGM/PVA/LiCl) matrix. Characterization results showed that the CIN@β-CD ICs formed a dense structure through hydrogen bonding, which enhanced the thermal stability, mechanical strength (tensile strength: 20.83 MPa) and surface hydrophilicity (water contact angle < 60°) of the film. The film acted as a humidity-triggered release system for CIN, enabling controlled antimicrobial delivery: at high humidity (98% RH), the film rapidly swelled and accelerated the release of CIN, with a cumulative release rate of 87.29% over 7 days, whereas the release slowed significantly at low humidity (43% RH). The antimicrobial activity of the released CIN was strongly influenced by ambient humidity, with the effect enhanced under high humidity conditions. It is noteworthy that the film containing 0.2% ICs exhibited the optimal antimicrobial performance among the formulations studied. This study elucidates a mechanism for humidity-triggered release through multicomponent synergism, which provides a feasible strategy for the design of environmentally friendly, smart packaging materials with high antimicrobial activity.

Zipper-like thermosensitive molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) based on konjac glucomannan (KGM) for metformin hydrochloride were prepared using KGM, a natural polysaccharide, as the matrix, acrylamide (AM) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) as the comonomers, N, N′ -methylenebis(acrylamide) as the cross-linking agent, ceric ammonium nitrate as the initiator, and metformin hydrochloride as the template molecule. The resultant MIPs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), thermal gravimetric analyzing (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The interpolymer interactions between poly (AM) and poly (AMPS) were demonstrated by the results of ultraviolet spectrometry (UV), indicating that MIPs with zipper-like structure could be fabricated. The thermo-responsive MIPs with on/off-switchable characteristic were evaluated by the method of cyclic voltammetry (CV). The adsorption experiment showed that the target molecules could be controlled to be adsorbed/desorbed by changing the external temperature. The adsorption capacity at high temperature was higher than that at low temperature. Moreover, the adsorption capacity of MIPs was much higher than that of NIPs. The results of adsorption experiments showed that the MIPs could specifically recognize and adsorb metformin with excellent selectivity, repeatability, and stability. Langmuir equation and Freundlich equation were applied to fit the adsorption isotherms of MIPs and the results showed that the Langmuir equation fitted better than the Freundlich equation. The product is expected to serve as a novel adsorption and separation material.

The exploration of high-performance biological scaffolds with antioxidant properties and microstructures is of great scientific and technological interest. Here, we develop a facile and green strategy to construct robust konjac glucomannan/polyvinylpyrrolidone (KGM/PVP) microfiber scaffolds via microfluidic spinning technology. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) as a representative natural antioxidant was then loaded into the microfiber scaffolds. Then characterizations were done by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform-infrared spectra, IR images, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis, along with antioxidant characterization. The as-prepared microfiber scaffolds (the average width of the microfibers is 1 ± 0.1 μm) are of high order, transparency, thermostability, and excellent antioxidant activity (43% DPPH radical scavenging activity and 0.61 reducing force), conferring highly potential applications in wound dressing and contact lenses.
A platform was constructed to produce microfiber scaffolds with antioxidant properties via microfluidic spinning strategy, which has potential applications as contact lenses lining films and transparent wound dressings.

The influence of konjac glucomannan (KGM) on the cool-induced gelation of gelatin was investigated using dynamic oscillatory rheological measurements at low strain amplitude and microstructural analysis by fluorescence microscopy. Rheological tests were measured during gel formation, including isothermal cooling and heating/cooling at a constant rate. The transition of phase compatibility to segregative phase separation with increase of KGM concentration was observed on KGM/gelatin mixture systems at 40 °C. The structural and mechanical of these hydrogels are dominated by the interplay between phase separation and gelation. In compatible phase status, the presence of KGM prolonged the gelation to occur for disordering the gelatin coil-helix transition, decreased the gel strength. The consequence of phase separation was dependent on KGM concentrations, resulting in bicontinuous microstructures. In the case of phase separation, the gelation was accelerated. It was demonstrated that by using different protein-polysaccharide mixtures at phase compatibility or separation concentrations could be feasible ways to control micro-networks and apply structural design in food formulation.
