Currently, hybrid noble metal nanostructures have garnered significant interest due to their exceptional properties and diverse applications in fields such as catalysis, energy conversion, plasmonic sensing, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). In this work, we report the highly site-specific growth of a single Ag island on both the concave face and the sharp tip of concave Au nanocube (c-AuNC) seeds, resulting in different c-AuNC-Ag Janus heterostructures. This site specificity was achieved by combining the surface curvature effect of the c-AuNCs with strong ligand-mediated interfacial energy control. Further integration of interfacial energy and growth kinetic control led to the formation of c-AuNC-(Ag)n core–satellite structures with varying numbers of Ag satellites. Benefiting from the continuous tunability of the interfacial energy and growth kinetics, the structural evolution of the c-AuNC-Ag hybrid structures continuously occurred, enabling precise control of the Au–Ag bimetallic structures. Notably, the resulting c-AuNC-Ag structures showed tunable intense localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorptions within the 400–1000 nm wavelength along with strong SERS signals. The broad spectral absorption and strong SERS made the c-AuNC-Ag structures promising candidates for SERS and LSPR-based applications, including sensing, imaging, light energy harvesting, and conversion. Moreover, the effective synthetic control demonstrated in this work could facilitate the development of advanced hybrid metal nanomaterials with valuable properties, further broadening their application potential across various fields.

To address the challenges of insufficient near-infrared light utilization and rapid charge recombination in traditional photocatalysts, this study designed and synthesized a hollow-structured Cu 2−x S@ZnIn 2 S 4 S-scheme heterojunction with synergistic photothermal-photocatalytic properties. The synergistic mechanism between plasmonic photothermal effects and heterojunction charge-transfer in broad-spectrum catalysis was systematically elucidated. Experimental results demonstrated that the composite achieved a hydrogen evolution rate of 32.58 mmol g −1 h −1 under AM 1.5G irradiation without cooling water (WCW), which is 3.00 times that of pure ZnIn 2 S 4 . Moreover, the solution temperature reached 47.4 °C under near-infrared (NIR) illumination. Theoretical analysis revealed that the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Cu 2−x S extended light absorption into the NIR region and generated a photothermal effect. Meanwhile, the S-scheme band alignment, together with multiple light scattering induced by the hollow structure, synergistically optimized carrier separation and promoted directional charge migration. The catalyst exhibited excellent stability over 750 min and demonstrated measurable NIR-driven activity at wavelengths above 800 nm. By coupling band-engineering with photothermal conversion, this work provided a theoretical foundation and a material prototype for designing efficient full-spectrum solar-to‑hydrogen conversion systems, showing clear application potential in photothermal-assisted artificial photosynthesis.

Circulating tumor cell (CTC) in the blood is the main cause of cancer metastasis for death in cancer patients. It is extremely important for cancer diagnosis at an early stage and treatment to simultaneously detect and kill the CTCs. In this work, a new hybridized nanolayer , namely gold nanoparticle/gold nanorods@ Polydopamine (AuNPs/AuNRs@PDA), was coated on the Ω-shaped fiber optics (Ω-FO) for localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) to perform tumor cell sensing and photothermal treatment (PTT). The PDA nanolayer was formed on a bare fiber optic through the self-polymerization of dopamine under mild conditions. The AuNRs and AuNPs were absorbed on the surface of the PDA nanolayer to form a hybridized nanolayer. The hybridized nanolayer-modified Ω-FO LSPR exhibited a high refractive index sensitivity (RIS) of 37.59 (a.u/RIU) and photothermal conversion efficiency. After being modified with the recognition element of aptamer, the Ω-FO LSPR was used to develop a sensitive and specifical tumor cell sensing. Under the irradiation of near-infrared light (NIR) laser, the Ω-FO LSPR can kill the captured tumor cells with the apoptotic/necrotic rate of 62.6 % and low side-effect for the nontarget cells. The FO LSPR sensor realized the dual functions of CTC sensing and PTT, which provided a new idea for the early diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Several polyhedral gold nanocrystals (Au NCs) whose geometric morphology belongs to the Platonic solid and Archimedean solid groups are synthesized by modulating the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) concentration in the designed hydrothermal processes. The mechanism of growth of these polyhedral Au NCs is revealed via crystallographic analyses, which suggest that their morphologies mainly depend on the diminishing of the surface energy of the specific facets in the CTAB-directive shape-control process. Furthermore, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties of the as-prepared polyhedral Au NCs are numerically assessed using the finite element method (FEM). The calculations show that these polyhedral Au NCs exhibit geometry-dependence plasmonic properties: specifically, the enormous local field enhancements occur around their vertices and corners. The SERS spectra of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid molecules adsorbed on these polyhedral Au NCs display superior SERS activity with an enhancement factor of 105 to 106 at the excitation wavelength of 785 nm. Particularly, the truncated tetrahedron and bitetrahedron show higher SERS enhancement factors due to their LSPR being closer to the excitation wavelength of 785 nm. Thus, the facile surfactant-assisted synthesis offers the opportunity to design and optimize the shape-dependent SERS activity of polyhedral Au NCs with respect to possible applications in bio-sensing and imaging.

Chronic diabetic wounds present formidable challenges, marked by uncontrolled bacterial infections, prolonged inflammation, and impaired angiogenesis. The evolving landscape of photo-responsive antibacterial therapy holds great promise in addressing these multifaceted issues, with a particular focus on leveraging the distinctive properties of 2D heterojunction materials. In this investigation, we engineered composite sprayed hydrogels, seamlessly integrating Bi/MoS 2 nano-heterojunctions. Capitalizing on the synergistic interplay between photocatalytic antibacterial and photothermal antibacterial mechanisms, the Bi/MoS 2 heterojunction, guided by its localized surface plasmon resonance, demonstrated outstanding antibacterial efficacy within a mere 10-minute exposure to 808 nm near-infrared light. This accelerated sterilization both in vitro and in vivo , consequently expediting wound healing. The sprayed composite gel not only furnishes protective shielding for skin tissues but also fosters endothelial cell proliferation, vascularization, and angiogenesis. This safe and ultrafast sterilizing hydrogel presents immense potential for application in antimicrobial dressings, thereby offering a promising avenue for diabetic wound healing.

2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is an extensively applied organic compound, primarily for agricultural weed control and plant growth agents. Although 2,4-D usually exists in the environment in low volumes, the detection of 2,4-D is critical for human health and environmental safety. In this work, a biophotonic biosensor was fabricated by coating the surface of a tapered optical fiber with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to excite the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and functionalizing the fiber with molybdenum disulfide nanosheets (MoS2-NSs)/zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO-NWs) to extend the effective sensing area. Due to the inhibitory effect of 2,4-D on the hydrolytic activity of ALP, the refractive index (RI) around the sensor surface changes, leading to a shift in the LSPR peak wavelength. According to this sensing technique, the sensor can detect concentrations in the range of 1–10 mg/L, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.29 mg/L. The stability, repeatability and selectivity tests show that the sensor has good stability and selectivity. In the actual sample detection experiment, the recovery rates of apples and Chinese cabbage were 96.2–100.4% and 83.8–108.8%, respectively, which indicated that the detection method had good accuracy for the detection of target substances in actual samples. Thus, the proposed sensor has an important application in the detection of 2,4-D herbicides.

In this work, Au@Ag nanostars were successfully synthesized via a seed-mediated growth method, using presynthesized Au nanostars as structural templates. The structure of the Au@Ag nanostars can be precisely controlled by adjusting the concentration of AgNO3 and Au nanostar seeds. The structural configuration of the Au@Ag nanostars can be precisely tuned from partially encapsulated cores to fully encapsulated architectures. The Au@Ag nanostars display tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) characteristics in response to changes in the Ag shell thickness. The Raman enhancement of 4-ATP indicates that surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) performs optimally when Ag fully encapsulate the Au nanostars, confirming the results from FDTD theoretical simulations. The remarkable sensitivity of SERS detection originates from the enhanced electromagnetic fields generated at both the nanogaps and branched ends of the Au@Ag nanostars, coupled with their optimized LSPR characteristics. The detection limit achieved an exceptionally low level of 10–15 M. Effective detection of pesticides such as thiram and carbaryl was also achieved. The structural configuration of the Au@Ag nanostars fully leverages the synergistic effects between Au and Ag, along with the nanogaps, to significantly enhance the sensitivity and stability of SERS detection. This study provides theoretical and experimental references for plasma metal nanostars with significantly enhanced electromagnetic fields and offers insights for future SERS studies.

For efficiently diagnosing early-stage breast cancer, current existing MUC1 biomarker detection methods suffer from common issues of low sensing sensitivities. In this study, a single-core two-channel optical fiber optofluidic on-chip sensor is employed to high-sensitivity detect breast cancer biomarker MUC1 protein, where a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) waveguide and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed into the device by using a femtosecond laser direct writing technique. To improve the device’s sensitivity, two microfluidic channels are etched using hydrofluoric (HF) solution, and Au nanobipyramids (Au NBPs) material on an optical fiber is used to excite and realize the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) enhancement. Thus, the device’s refractive index (RI) sensitivity increases from 25.07 to 580.22 nm/RIU. FBG compensates the device’s temperature sensitivity, achieving at -0.139 nm/℃. On the basis of the advanced LSPR enhancement strategy, the sensor can not only specifically sense MUC1 protein with an ultra-low limit of detection (LOD) of 20.74 aM, it can also detect MUC1 protein in real serum background with a LOD of 42.07 aM. The obtained ultra-low LOD is lower than most existing state-of-the-art MUC1 detection technologies. This study paves what we believe to be a new universal way for developing advanced high-sensitivity lab-in-fiber optofluidic sensing strategy.

A simple chip-localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensor with a handmade sample pool is constructed based on the transmission mode of the UV–vis spectrophotometer to detect sulfadiazine (SDZ) by combining magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers nanoparticles (MMIPs NPs) as adsorbent and signal amplification reagent. The interaction between SDZ and methacrylic acid (MAA) was analyzed at molecule level (Gaussian 09 software), which indicates that the main interacting sites of SDZ and MAA are respectively O2, O3, H24 and H4, O2. The LSPR signal generated by SDZ-captured MMIPs NPs is 1.52 times compared with that of SDZ alone. The LSPR sensor shows a linear response for SDZ in concentration range from 1 to 100 ng/mL with a detection limit of 0.64 ng/mL. Meanwhile, the selectivity of LSPR sensor coupled with MMIPs NPs is better compared to magnetic non-molecularly imprinted nanoparticles(MNIPs NPs) for SDZ detection. Significantly, the chip-LSPR sensor shows strong anti-interference to actual sample matrix (recoveries range from 80.66 % to 122.21 %). This work provides an efficient strategy for building high-performance chip-LSPR sensor.

Graphical Ultrathin Two-Dimensional BiOCl-Bi 2 S 3 -Cu 2 S Ternary Heterostructures with Enhanced LSPR effect for NIR Photonic Bacterial Disinfection (Chen, Yang, et al.). : Photonic disinfection, particularly near-infrared (NIR) light triggered antibacterial, has emerged as a highly promising solution for combating pathogenic microbes due to its spatiotemporal operability, safety, and low cost of apparatus. However, it remains challenging to construct NIR-responsive antibacterial agents with high light-converting efficacy and elucidate synergistic mechanisms. In this work, ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) BiOCl-Bi 2 S 3 -Cu 2 S ternary heterostructures that can efficiently kill drug-resistant bacteria were synthesized by doping 0D Bi 2 S 3 and Cu 2 S nanoparticles in the 2D BiOCl nanosheets via a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. Notably, the incorporation of Cu 2 S nanoparticles bestows strong NIR light-harvesting capability to the composite nanosheets due to their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Upon NIR light illumination, the BiOCl-Bi 2 S 3 -Cu 2 S nanosheets can achieve enhanced photonic hyperthermia and reaction oxygen species (ROS) generation, serving as single light-activated bi-functional photothermal/photodynamic therapeutics. High-speed hot electrons and large local electronic fields caused by LSPR might play an important role in thermal vibrations and effective carrier separations, respectively. Benefiting from the unique ternary heterostructures, both the photothermal conversion and ROS generation efficacy of BiOCl-Bi 2 S 3 -Cu 2 S nanosheets are significantly improved compared to the binary BiOCl-Cu 2 S or BiOCl-Bi 2 S 3 nanosheets. Accordingly, the ternary composite nanosheets can effectively kill bacteria via the NIR-driven photonic disinfection mechanism. This work presents a new type of 2D composite nanosheets with ternary heterostructures for NIR photonic disinfection.

Graphical Under light excitation , WOS broadens the photo-response range through Z-scheme heterojunction. Its photothermal effect can convert light into heat and accelerate the reaction. This efficient photothermal technology facilitates CO 2 reduction. Photothermal CO 2 reduction using H 2 O combined with photocatalysis-driven H 2 O splitting combined with thermal catalysis-supported CO 2 reduction has attracted rapid interest in artificial synthesis of solar fuel. With respect to extremely efficient photothermal catalysis, the photothermal impact of TMDCs (Transition Metal Dichalcogenides) facilitates CO 2 reduction by activating lattice oxygen in oxide to enhance H 2 O oxidation. However, the fixed band gap of single photocatalyst is limited. The purpose of this work is to expand the band gap and improve the redox capacity. Hollow boxwood ball-like WO 3 /WS 2 Z-scheme heterojunctions were prepared and used for photothermal catalytic CO 2 reduction. DFT calculations and UV-Vis spectra show LSPR effect in WOS heterojunctions, and the optical response extends to near infrared region. By comparison, the photothermal catalytic reduction of WO 3 /WS 2 (9.717 μmol) by CO 2 at 513 K is higher than that at 298 K (1.198 μmol) by a factor of 8. The formation of Z-scheme heterojunction promotes rapid carrier transfer and lowers the reaction energy barrier. As well as the hollow structure improves light utilization and increases the interfacial area and number of active sites. In addition, the WO 3 /WS 2 heterostructure utilizes its unique LSPR effect to generate heat through the photothermal effect, which can also promote molecular activation. This work reveals the important role of the LSPR effect in photothermal catalysis and demonstrates a TMDCs-based photothermal-driven catalysts, which presents a promising approach for designing of photothermal catalytic CO 2 reduction.

We report a facile synthesis of AuAg alloy nanoplates in high purity, together with tunable elemental compositions and uniformity in size and morphology. The success of current work relies on the one-pot co-reduction of Au and Ag precursor in an ice-water bath with the presence of octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (OTAC) as a capping agent. With the increase in Ag content, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of AuAg alloy nanoplates exhibited a noticeable blue-shift from near-infrared (NIR) to visible region. Thanks to the well-defined NIR LSPR properties and broad spectral range, the current products exhibit a remarkably integrated high-quality photothermal feature as well as the efficient photothermal conversion. Meanwhile, the current AuAg alloy nanoplates demonstrate satisfying photothermal stability verified via continuous exposure and cyclic irradiation by an 808-nm laser. The present study offers a facile route to the preparation of two-dimensional AuAg alloy nanocrystals with tunable elemental compositions and validates their excellent responses towards photothermal measurements, which could find promising use in photothermy-based diagnosis and therapy.
