Electronic structure modulation and electrical property tuning of LaMnO3-based NTC ceramics via Cu doping

Yang Ma,Huimin Zhang,Juntao Xie,Dingran Li,Yufei Liu,Aimin Chang

A novel perovskite-type low-temperature thermistor ceramic, LaMn 1-x Cu x O 3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5), was synthesized utilizing the sol-gel technique. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis verified the successful formation of a single-phase perovskite structure throughout the entire compositional range. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations indicated that an increase in Cu 2+ doping concentration resulted in grain growth and a morphological evolution from square-shaped to polygonal grains. For all samples, the resistivities (ρ 65K ), activation energies for electrical conduction (E a ) and thermal constants (B 65/150 ) were in the ranges of 0.380 to 6.247 MΩ cm, 0.066 to 0.128 eV and 835-1213 K. The electrical characterization of LaMn 1-x Cu x O 3 ceramics demonstrates conformity with the small polaron conduction model. Analysis through impedance spectroscopy reveals that the electrical resistivity of the material is primarily controlled by grain boundary resistance. This study emphasizes the enhancement of electrical properties and the modulation of the band structure achieved through Cu 2+ ion doping, thereby offering a viable approach for the advancement of high-performance LaMnO 3 -based negative temperature coefficient thermistors operating at low temperatures.

Cobalt-Doped Perovskite-Type Oxide LaMnO3 as Bifunctional Oxygen Catalysts for Hybrid Lithium–Oxygen Batteries

Xiao Liu,Hao Gong,Tao Wang,Hu Guo,Li Song,Wei Xia,Bin Gao,Zhongyi Jiang,Linfei Feng,Jianping He

Perovskite-type oxides based on rare-earth metals containing lanthanum manganate are promising catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline electrolyte. Perovskite-type LaMnO 3 shows excellent ORR performance, but poor OER activity. To improve the OER performance of LaMnO 3 , the element cobalt is doped into perovskite-type LaMnO 3 through a sol–gel method followed by a calcination process. To assess electrocatalytic activities for the ORR and OER, a series of LaMn 1− x Co x O 3 ( x= 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5) perovskite oxides were synthesized. The results indicate that the amount of doped cobalt has a significant effect on the catalytic performance of LaMn 1− x Co x O 3 . If x= 0.3, LaMn 0.7 Co 0.3 O 3 not only shows a tolerable electrocatalytic activity for the ORR, but also exhibits a great improvement (>200 mV) on the catalytic activity for the OER; this indicates that the doping of cobalt is an effective approach to improve the OER performance of LaMnO 3 . Furthermore, the results demonstrate that LaMn 0.7 Co 0.3 O 3 is a promising cost-effective bifunctional catalyst with high performance in the ORR and OER for application in hybrid Li−O 2 batteries.

Magnesium-enhanced redox property and surface acidity-basicity of LaMnO3 perovskites for efficient methane purification

Meiqiu Feng,Jia Lin,Jinghua Li,Xiaohua Chen,Ying Zheng

Catalytic combustion has been applied to purify methane emissions from natural gas vehicle exhaust, yet it still requires the development of catalysts with both high activity and robust stability. Herein, non-equivalent promoter-magnesium ions (Mg 2+ ) were introduced into LaMnO 3 perovskites via a facile sol–gel method to partially substitute Mn sites and boost the catalytic performance. The incorporation of Mg induced the transition of Mn 3+ to Mn 4+ and generated oxygen vacancies, which improved the reactivity of lattice oxygen and facilitated the formation of adsorbed oxygen species. Turning the coordination state of Mn and O led to an augmentation of surface acid-basic sites on LaMn 1-x Mg x O 3 , which was beneficial for the activation of methane and adsorption of dissociated intermediates. The presence of abundant highly-reducible Mn 4+ and surface-adsorbed oxygen species accelerated the complete oxidation of methane. Consequently, LaMn 0.7 Mg 0.3 O 3 with the optimized surface acidity-basicity and redox property exhibited greatly enhanced catalytic activity, selectivity, water-/sulfur-resistance and thermal stability compared to LaMnO 3 . This study emphasizes the importance of synergistically adjusting surface properties to enhance catalytic purification performance.

Spin-state engineering of Co-doped LaMnO3 enhances N2 and H2O activation for chemical-looping ammonia synthesis

Shengxi Zhao,Linyan He,Jinquan Li,Da Song,Juan Fu,Si Lu,Zhen Huang,Fang He

Ammonia is a crucial chemical and carbon-free energy carrier, but its industrial synthesis via the Haber–Bosch process requires harsh conditions and fossil-derived hydrogen. Alternative strategies are needed to achieve sustainable ammonia production under moderate conditions. H 2 O-based chemical looping ammonia synthesis (H 2 O-CLAS) enables hydrogen-free operation and decouples N 2 and H 2 O activation from scaling constraints, but remains hindered by high energy demand, inferior catalyst stability, and intrinsically challenging activation of N 2 and H 2 O. Here we demonstrate Co-doped LaMnO 3 as a durable and efficient H 2 O-CLAS catalyst, where nitrogen fixation occurs at 1000 °C and ammonia release proceeds at 600 °C under atmospheric pressure with a production rate of 866.01 µmol g −1 h −1 , outperforming state-of-the-art H 2 O-CLAS catalysts. Co doping modulates the d-band electronic structure of LaMnO 3 via spin-state engineering and enhances lattice oxygen mobility, thereby promoting N 2 and H 2 O activation, nitride formation, and hydrogen-bond interactions for ammonia formation. This work outlines a pathway toward sustainable ammonia synthesis with markedly reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions. Scheme. Jiaxin Huang,Huanbin Gou,Jinming Pan,Yuping Liu,Ming Nie,Bo Shang,Danmei Yu,Guangsheng Huang,Dingfei Zhang,Fusheng Pan

Within the domain of metal-air battery systems, developing the non - precious metal catalysts featuring extraordinary catalytic activity in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial to the air-cathode. This work unveils a sol-gel engineered synthesis of La 0.9 Ce 0.1 Co 0.1 Mn 0.9 O 3 perovskite via the co-doping strategy, with targeted exploration of its electrochemical behavior and underlying mechanism in Zn-air and Mg-air battery systems. The perovskite La 0.9 Ce 0.1 Co 0.1 Mn 0.9 O 3 has a wealth of catalytically active ORR sites and a mesoporous architecture. The diffusion-limited current density of La 0.9 Ce 0.1 Co 0.1 Mn 0.9 O 3 successfully achieves a 1.2-fold enhancement relative to commercial Pt/C with a low H 2 O 2 yield of <0.27 %, underscoring its superior mass transport kinetics. The maximum power densities of La 0.9 Ce 0.1 Co 0.1 Mn 0.9 O 3 -based primary/secondary zinc - air batteries are 130 and 83 mW cm −2 , respectively, which are on a par with those of Pt/C - based Zinc - air batteries. Whereas, the open - circuit voltage and maximum power density of the primary magnesium - air battery fabricated with 10 wt% KCl as the electrolyte are 1.85 V and 52 mW cm −2 , respectively, which exhibit superiority over Pt/C catalysts. In combination with DFT analyses, the La 0.9 Ce 0.1 Co 0.1 Mn 0.9 O 3 perovskite emerges as a prospective ORR catalyst for metal-air battery realization.

Ca- and Ga-Doped LaMnO3 for Solar Thermochemical CO2 Splitting with High Fuel Yield and Cycle Stability

Xianglei Liu,Tong Wang,Ke Gao,Xianguang Meng,Qiao Xu,Chao Song,Zhonghui Zhu,Hangbin Zheng,Yong Hao,Yimin Xuan

Solar thermochemical CO2 splitting to produce fuels is an effective route to reduce carbon emission. However, it is still a daunting challenge to achieve a high CO yield and good cycle stability simultaneously at a low reaction temperature. Here, Ca- and Ga-doped LaMnO3 is introduced for solar thermochemical CO2 splitting with an ultrahigh CO yield and excellent cycle stability at a moderate operation temperature. The average CO production reaches 513 μmol/g for La0.6Ca0.4Mn0.8Ga0.2O3 when operating between 1350 and 1050 °C. Such a high value sets a record among directly measured thermochemical CO production in the literature with the temperature swing limited within 300 °C. No obvious performance deterioration over eight cycles is observed due to stable structures. The high CO production of La0.6Ca0.4Mn0.8Ga0.2O3 can be attributed to the transition of the surface reaction to internal bulk diffusion induced by Ca doping and enhanced non-stoichiometry due to Ga doping. This work provides a promising alternative for solar thermochemical CO2 splitting with high fuel yield and cycle stability.

Precisely Ce-doped LaMnO3 produces thermally stable nanoparticles and efficient electron pathways for electrocatalytic wastewater to fertilizer conversion

Kun Lang,Yuanyingxue Gao,Panzhe Qiao,Mingyang Liu,Xiaoxin Zou,Huiyuan Meng,Wei Wu,Baojiang Jiang

Precise Ce doping stabilizes LaMnO 3 nanoperovskites during high-temperature calcination. • Ce-induced V O pinning suppresses coarsening and builds a Mn 3+ –O–Mn 3+ /V O network. • LCMO achieves 9623 μg h −1 cm −2 NH 3 yield and 96.4% FE in a flow cell. • Low-cost LCMO scales to 78 g and converts municipal wastewater to ammonium fertilizer. Precise control of the geometry and electronic states of high-temperature perovskites is crucial for efficient electrocatalytic nitrite reduction (NO 2 RR) to remove NO 2 − pollutants and enable green ammonia synthesis. In this work, an A-site Ce substitution strategy is established to steer high-temperature crystallization through (V O ) pinning, enabling defect–lattice co-programming of Ce–LaMnO 3 (LCMO) with a nanoscale Mn 3+ -rich active network. Importantly, a synthesis-to-reactivity mechanism is elucidated for high-temperature perovskite NO 2 RR catalysts, where V O pinning suppresses sintering-driven agglomeration while concurrent e g state activation mitigates electronically sluggish Mn sites. Density functional theory further shows that the formation of Mn 3+ −O−Mn 3+ network in conjunction with V O lowers the free-energy demand of key hydrogenation steps and accelerates NO 2 RR kinetics. In the flow cell, the optimized LCMO catalyst delivers an ammonia yield rate of 9623 μg h −1 cm −2 with Faradaic efficiency of 96.4%, ranking it among the most efficient catalysts reported for NO 2 RR. Notably, LCMO is scalable to 78 g per batch without detectable structural change and at a low estimated cost of ca. 1.5 USD g −1 , highlighting its industrial relevance. In a solar-powered system, it directly converts real municipal wastewater into ammonium fertilizer with an (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 concentration of 1.8 g L −1 , establishing a scalable, solar-driven wastewater-to-fertilizer route for practical green ammonia stabilization. Download: Download high-res image (193KB) Download: Download full-size image Trace A site Ce in LaMnO 3 pins oxygen vacancies, blocks interparticle mass exchange, and locks smaller Mn 3+ -rich perovskite nanoparticles with a Mn 3+ –O–Mn 3+ /V O network that lowers NO 2 RR hydrogenation barriers. LCMO delivers 9623 μg h −1 cm −2 NH 3 at 96.4% FE at −0.8 V vs. RHE and in a flow converts wastewater into crystalline NH 4 F and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 .

Christopher Bassanyin,Yu Wang,Jiake Li,Hedong Jiang,Xin Liu,Pingchun Guo,Xueguo Zhao,Hua Zhu,Yanxiang Wang

The gradual depletion of fossil fuels and growing energy demands necessitate efficient renewable energy solutions. Photorechargeable supercapacitors (PSc) offer a promising approach by converting light into electrical energy for storage. This study synthesized sulfur-doped perovskite LaMnSxO3–x (LMSx, x = 0, 0.03, 0.05, 0.1, 0.3) using the modified sol–gel method. The optimized LMS0.05 single-electrode yields a specific capacity of 712.73 F/g at 2 A/g in 1 M KOH. The constructed LMS0.05//LMS0.05 symmetric supercapacitor achieves 230 F/g specific capacity at a current density of 3 A/g under 95 mW/cm2 light intensity, which is 4.41 times higher than dark conditions. The capacity retention rates are 99.48% and 72.47% at a current density of 10 A/g after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles under light and dark conditions, respectively. Coulombic efficiencies are 100% under both conditions. The constructed MnO2//LMS0.05 asymmetric supercapacitor achieves a specific capacity of 550 F/g at a current density of 3 A/g under 95 mW/cm2 light intensity, corresponding to a 5.53-times enhancement relative to dark conditions. The capacity retention rates are 99.87% and 98.68% at a current density of 10A/g after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles under light and dark conditions, respectively. Coulombic efficiencies are 100% under both conditions. Moreover, the MnO2//LMS0.05 attains a specific capacity of 35.17 F/g under photocharging, yielding a PCE of 0.117% in only 3 min at 91% of the maximum voltage. This research, for the first time, provides a promising approach to explore nonmetal doping to advance perovskite supercapacitors for applications in energy devices and renewable energy storage solutions.

In-situ growth of biomass-derived carbon coating on LaMnO3 nanofibers: synergistic interface interaction for enhanced energy storage performance

Yi Cao,Pengcheng Lu,Xiaobing Hu,Zhong Li,Qiyun Pan,Dabei Wu,Haijiao Xie,Huang He,Wenfeng Qiu

In recent years, a variety of materials have been employed to improve the electrochemical performance of perovskite-type oxides, thereby achieving high energy and power densities simultaneously. In this study, a series of carbon-coated LaMnO 3 nanofiber (LMO@C) composites were synthesized via the in-situ hydrothermal generation of various biomass-derived porous carbon, denoted as LMO@C-g (glucose), LMO@C-su (sucrose), and LMO@C-st (starch). After heat-treatment in Argon, the LMO@C composites were subjected to different physicochemical characterizations to investigate the impacts of different carbon sources on the variations in their microstructure and element valence. The ordered polymeric structure of starch provides LMO@C-st with three significant advantages, suggesting its optimal energy storage performance. Additionally, based on the electrochemical results, LMO@C-st is the most optimum sample due to its excellent electrochemical behavior with maximum C s (798.7F g −1 ), superior rate capability (68%), and the best coulombic efficiency (95%). The first-principles calculations indicate that the improvement of charge storage capacity and transport kinetics arise from the strong interface interaction between the covalently bonded carbon and LMO. Furthermore, a symmetric supercapacitor (LMO@C-st||LMO@C-st) fabricated in this work reveals an outstanding specific capacitance, superior energy density and excellent cycling stability, demonstrating an effective new approach to the development of energy storage materials.

Engineering Ag-O-Mn bridges with enhanced oxygen mobility over Ag substituted LaMnO3 perovskite catalyst for robustly boosting toluene combustion

Bing Li,Fulin Deng,Zheyu Li,Hao Xiong,Shuqu Zhang,Weili Dai,Jie Zhang,Lixia Yang,Jianping Zou,Xubiao Luo

Perovskite oxide, as a promising candidate for volatile organic compounds combustion, is incapable in practical application at present due to its low intrinsic activity resulting from inadequate active oxygen species. However, balancing the concentration of active oxygen species and robust structure for perovskite oxide is still challenging. Herein, an efficient perovskite-based catalyst (denoted as TA-La 0.9 Ag 0.1 MnO 3 ) was constructed through Ag substitution and subsequently tartaric acid etching of LaMnO 3 , which exhibits robustly boosted catalytic performance for toluene combustion compared with pristine LaMnO 3 , causing a ∼100 °C lower T 90 . In this study, Ag substitution could weaken the La-O hybridization, which effectively facilitates La cations removal by subsequent acid etching, thus sufficiently exposing active Ag and Mn species and generating more surface lattice oxygen, but also constructs Ag-Mn-O bridges within the matrix of Ag substituted LaMnO 3 . Acid etching enables the activation of Ag-O-Mn bridges with strong electron transfer ability from O to Ag atom, promoting the mobility of lattice oxygen, and consequently the low-temperature oxidation ability. Additionally, the exposed Ag and Mn as Lewis acid sites can effectively improve the adsorption capacity toward toluene molecules, which synergistically facilitates the toluene abatement. Notably, TA-La 0.9 Ag 0.1 MnO 3 also exhibits superb long-term stability, water-resistance, and high thermal stability up to 650 °C.

Unraveling the mechanism of K-doping on the enhancement of oxygen reduction reaction activity in LaMnO3 perovskite for Zinc-Air batteries

Zhi Li,Ying Gao,Qingshan Li,Lan Zhang,Yuanna Sun,Chan Siew Hwa

LaMnO 3 -based perovskites are considered as one of the most promising oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts to replace noble metals due to their excellent controllability and stability. A central strategy to enhance their electrocatalytic performance involves A-site doping. While divalent cation doping (e.g., Sr 2 + , Ca 2+ ) has been extensively explored, the mechanistic understanding of how lower-valence monovalent cations modulate the electronic structure and enhance ORR activity remains insufficient. This study systematically investigates the effect of monovalent potassium (K⁺) doping in La 1-x K x MnO 3-δ (LKM) as a model system to unravel the underlying enhancement mechanism. Among the series, La 0.8 K 0.2 MnO 3-δ (LKM20) demonstrates improved ORR activity with an onset potential of 0.924 V and a half-wave potential of 0.750 V (vs. RHE). The enhanced activity of LKM20 is attributed to: 1) K-induced tuning of the Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ ratio nearing 1.24; 2) Regulating oxygen vacancy concentration and optimizing intermediate adsorption performance; and 3) Reinforced Mn-O covalent bonding. Density Functional Theory calculations reveal that the introduction of K effectively reduces the energy barrier for the ORR. In the zinc-air battery, LKM20 exhibits a maximum power density of 122.5 mW cm −2 and maintains stable operation over 1800 h during charge-discharge cycles.

The Role of Li2WO4-Modification in Modulating Electron Transfer and Oxygen Mobility of LaMnO3 Perovskites for Chemical Looping Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethane

Yufang Su,Xianglin Wei,Li Lin,Xiang Yu,Shengxi Zhao,Fang He

Ethylene is a fundamental feedstock in the chemical industry. Oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of ethane offers a promising route for ethylene production, as it avoids thermodynamic equilibrium limitations and mitigates coke formation. However, the conventional co-feeding of ethane and oxygen raises concerns regarding operational cost and safety risks. Chemical looping oxidative dehydrogenation (CL-ODH) addresses these issues by using lattice oxygen instead of gaseous oxygen to convert ethane into ethylene. Nevertheless, existing CL-ODH process still suffer from low ethane conversion, limited ethylene selectivity, and inadequate stability, primarily due to the over-reactivity of lattice oxygen leading to deep oxidation. In this work, we used Li 2 WO 4 -modified LaMnO 3 to suppress over-oxidation. This catalyst exhibits outstanding performance, achieving 66.0% ethane conversion, 91.0% ethylene selectivity, and 60.1% ethylene yield, while maintaining good stability over 25 cycles at 750°C. We attribute such high ethylene yield to the modulation of bulk lattice oxygen and electron distribution around Mn sites via formation of interfacial Mn─O─W bridged moiety. The enhanced ethylene selectivity originates from the dynamic generation and consumption of bridging oxygen species in the Mn─O─W moiety. The tailored electronic and local chemical environment of active sites strengthens ethane adsorption and facilitates ethylene desorption, thereby boosting ethylene selectivity. Graphical The formation and consumption of bridging oxygen atoms in the Mn─O─W bridging structure at the interface dynamically regulate the charge distribution around the Mn sites. This tailored electronic environment enhances the adsorption of ethane and promotes the desorption of ethylene, thereby improving ethylene selectivity.
