Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries with lithium sulfide (Li 2 S) as cathode have attracted great attention recently, because of high specific capacity (1166 mA h g −1 ) of Li 2 S and potential safety of using Li metal-free anode. Li 2 S cathode has lower volume expansion and higher thermal stability than the traditional sulfur cathode. However, the problems of “shuttle effect” and poor electrical conductivity of the cathode material still need to be overcome. In this work, multi-layered Ti 3 C 2 /Li 2 S (ML-Ti 3 C 2 /Li 2 S) composite has been prepared and applied as a cathode in advanced Li-S batteries. The unique multi-layer sheet structure of Ti 3 C 2 provides space for the storage of Li 2 S, and its good conductivity greatly enhances the usage ratio of Li 2 S and improves the conductivity of the whole Li 2 S cathode. Compared with commonly used graphene, ML-Ti 3 C 2 can trap polysulfides effectively by chemical adsorption and also activate the reaction of Li 2 S to polysulfides by forming Ti-S bond. As a result, during the cycling of the batteries with ML-Ti 3 C 2 /Li 2 S cathodes, the activation voltage barrier of the first cycle has decreased to 2.8 V, and the “shuttle effect” has been suppressed effectively. The cycling and rate performances of the ML-Ti 3 C 2 /Li 2 S cathodes have been significantly improved compared to that of graphene/Li 2 S cathodes. They maintain a capacity of 450 mA h g −1 at 0.2 C after 100 cycles, and deliver attractive rate performances of 750, 630, 540, 470 and 360 mA h g −1 at 0.1 C, 0.2 C, 0.5 C, 1 C, and 2 C, respectively.

Lithium sulfur (Li-S) batteries have broad development potential in the field of electrochemical energy storage due to their high theoretical specific capacity, low cost, and environmentally friendly. However, the notorious shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) during cycling process severely limits the performance improvement of Li-S batteries. In this work, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) decorated by MoC nanoparticles have been successfully established through electrospin combined with carbothermal reduction method. The effect of calcination temperature and MoC loading amount on the catalytic activity on LiPSs, as well as the electrochemical performance have been first investigated in detail. Based on the visualized adsorption and LiPSs conversion kinetics testing, the CNFs@MoC composites with 37 wt% MoC loading (CNFs@MoC-37 %) are confirmed to be the optimized sample. By using liquid-phase impregnation to load Li 2 S onto the CNFs@MoC-37 % composites to act as cathode, the assembled cells can achieve a reversible capacity of 941 mAh g −1 and 751 mAh g −1 at the current density of 0.1C and 1C respectively. The reversible capacity can still maintain at 550 mAh g −1 at 1C after 500 cycles, corresponding to the capacity decay rate of 0.054 % per cycle.

The poor interface between the active materials, solid electrolytes, and conductive additives in composite cathode materials is the key factor restricting the performance of the all-solid-state lithium-sulfur battery. Here, the composite cathode material was prepared through the method of one-step ball milling. The sulfide electrolyte Li 3 PS 4 (LPS) was formed on the surface of the active material Li 2 S while the conductive additives were incorporated, and the conductive ions and electronic network were constructed simultaneously. After adding an appropriate amount of carbon nanotubes (cnt), the composite cathode exhibited high specific capacity of 1145.2 mAh g −1 after 30 times of cycling at a current density of 0.2 mA cm −2 , and the battery with ultrahigh areal Li 2 S loading also displays high capacity of 962.6 mA g −1 . The composite cathode with high Li 2 S content (56.3%) was prepared, with excellent performance exhibited: the capacity is 741 mAh g −1 after 30 times of cycling at a current density of 0.2 mA cm −2 .
Without additional sulfide electrolyte, the composite cathode materials were prepared by one-step ball milling with lithium sulfide, phosphorus pentasulfide, acetylene black, and carbon nanotubes as raw materials.

Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN), as an inherently safe, low-cost, and long-cycle-life material, holds a promising future in large-scale energy storage applications. However, there are still issues such as sluggish electrochemical reaction kinetics and low energy utilization efficiency, which severely constrain practical applications. Herein, we introduce the displacement reaction of Cu 2 S-Li 2 S to the conversion reaction of SPAN/Li 2 S by incorporating Carbon Nanotube (CNT) and Copper (Cu) to fabricate Cu-SPAN/CNT cathode. Detailed experimental investigations demonstrate the fast and reversible Cu 2 S-Li 2 S displacement reaction, enhancing the SPAN/Li 2 S redox kinetics. Consequently, Cu-SPAN/CNT achieves 1450 mAh g −1 at 1 C with 80.3 % retention after 1000 cycles, while delivering 1207 mAh g −1 at 4 C and maintaining operation under practical conditions (6.75 mg cm −2 sulfur loading, −20 °C). Crucially, it attains 79.8 % energy utilization efficiency at the 100th cycle. In conclusion, this work optimizes the cycling process of SPAN-based batteries, particularly the highly polarized charging processes, providing a simple solution for developing energy storage applications with extended cycle life, accelerated reaction kinetics, and enhanced energy utilization efficiency.

The practical uses of lithium–sulfur batteries are greatly restricted by the sluggish reaction kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), leading to low sulfur utilization and poor cyclic stability. Using the heterostructure catalysts is an effective way to solve the above problems, but how to further enhance the conversion efficiency and avoid the surface passivation by the insulative Li2S has not been well investigated. Herein, a heterostructure catalyst with rich heterointerfaces was prepared by modifying Mo2N microbelt with SnO2 nanodots. The formed rich interfaces with high accessibility act as the profitable nucleation sites guiding the Li2S 3D growth, which avoids the catalyst surface passivation and facilitates the LiPS conversion. The introduction of SnO2 nanodots also enhances the LiPS adsorption. Thus, the assembled battery with the above catalyst as the cathode additive shows a high capacity of 738.3 mAh g–1 after 550 cycles at 0.5 C with an ultralow capacity decay of 0.025% per cycle. Even with high sulfur loading of 9.0 mg cm–2, good cyclic stability is also achieved at 0.5 C with a low E/S ratio of 5 μL mgs–1. This work shows an effective way to enhance the LiPS conversion kinetics and guide Li2S deposition in Li–S batteries.

Sulfide solid electrolytes (S-SEs) are widely preferred for their high ionic conductivity and processability. However, the further development of S-SEs is hindered by the excessive price of its critical raw materials of Li 2 S. Herein, a low-cost and environmentally friendly method is proposed to synthesize Li 2 S by the carbothermal reduction reaction of Li 2 SO 4 in one step, and the effects of various factors are also discussed. As a result, a purity of 99.67% is obtained over the self-prepared Li 2 S. More importantly, the cost of the self-prepared Li 2 S is only about 50 $/kg, which is significantly lower than that of the commercial counterpart (10000–15000 dollar/kg). Moreover, the ionic conductivity of Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl 1.5 prepared using self-prepared Li 2 S as raw materials is 4.19 mS/cm at room temperature, which is a little higher than that of Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl 1.5 using commercial Li 2 S (4.05 mS/cm). And the all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) with the as-prepared electrolytes could maintain a discharge capacity of 109.9 mA·h/g with an average coulombic efficiency (CE) of 98% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C , which is equivalent to that using commercial Li 2 S, demonstrating that the preparation strategy of Li 2 S proposed in this work is feasible.

In solution-based method, the nature of the solvent may play an important role to the nanostructure of Li 2 S/graphene composite. In this paper, considering anhydrous N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) has good wetting ability with graphene and its function groups has high binding energies with Li 2 S, NMP was used as solvent to prepare Li 2 S/graphene composite. The structure morphology and electrochemical performance of as-prepared Li 2 S/graphene composite were investigated. Results show that numerous of nano-Li 2 S affiliate on graphene surface homogeneously. The existence of these nano-Li 2 S alleviate π-π interaction between graphene sheets, and Li 2 S/graphene composite exhibits honeycomb-like structure with abundant micropores. Due to this special structure, without extra treatment, the as- prepared Li 2 S/graphene composite exhibits improved electrochemical performance, such as high columbic efficiency, high energy capacity, a high rate capability, and a low potential barrier.

Garnet solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) have extraordinary application prospects due to their high room temperature ionic conductivity and high stability to lithium metal. However, when exposed to air during the preparation process, contaminants are inevitably generated on the electrolyte surface, resulting in poor wettability of the Li/garnet interface and high interfacial resistance. Moreover, solid-state batteries assembled with contaminated electrolytes can easily lead to the formation and expansion of lithium dendrites. Herein, we demonstrate a surface chemistry strategy of rapid vulcanization treatment to improve interface problems by introducing lithium sulfides into the garnet electrolyte. Compared to the surface contaminants (e.g., Li2CO3) on garnet, lithium sulfides (e.g., Li2S) have several advantages; it is a good Li+ conductor and has good wettability to both the garnet surface and Li metal anode. The interfacial resistance of the vulcanized garnet-SSE pellets decreased from 2961 Ω cm2 for LLZT@LC to 391 Ω cm2 for LLZT@LS. In addition, the lithium symmetric battery assembled by using LLZT@LS pellets exhibits stable plating/stripping cycling performance and ultralow overpotential at a current of 0.2 mA cm−2 without Li dendrite growth. Moreover, the LiFePO4/Li batteries with LLZT@LS pellets show excellent rate performances and cycling stability (114.3 mA h g−1 @ 0.5C after 150 cycles) with a capacity retention of 86%. These results demonstrate that the rapid treatment of garnet contaminants by a surface chemistry strategy is not only a simple and efficient solution but also provides strong support for the realization of high-performance solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs).

The practical deployment of lithium sulfide (Li 2 S) cathodes in all-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) is challenged by their poor innate conductivities and high activation barriers. Here, we demonstrate a lattice engineering strategy using Zr 4+ substitution to fundamentally activate Li 2 S. The introduced Zr 4 + expands the lattice, creating lithium vacancies that enhance ionic conductivity by two orders of magnitude. Simultaneously, Zr─S orbital hybridization narrows the bandgap for superior electronic conductivity and weakens Li─S bonds to lower the activation energy. This synergistic effect enables a highly reversible solid-state sulfur conversion. As a result, our ASSLSB delivers an ultrahigh energy density of 996.2 Wh kg −1 based on the cathode with a record 65 wt.% electrode-level Li 2 S content and maintains stability for over 100 cycles, far exceeding the conventional configuration of ∼40 wt.% loading. This strategy establishes a viable pathway toward practical high-energy-density ASSLSBs by fundamentally activating Li 2 S electrochemistry.

Although lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries exhibit extensive potential application as a novel type of rechargeable battery, their practical implementation is hindered by the shuttle effect of soluble polysulfides and the sluggish redox kinetics involved in converting polysulfides to Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S. Herein, we synthesized cerium-zirconium oxide/carbon nanotube (CZO/CNT) composite via a facile hydrothermal-calcination method for use as a separator coating. In this material, the highly conductive network structure of CNTs optimizes charge transport pathways, ensuring rapid lithium-ion migration. Meanwhile, the strong polarity of CZO exhibits strong adsorption-catalytic capacity toward Lewis-basic polysulfides, thereby accelerating the reaction kinetics and improving the deposition efficiency of Li 2 S. Based on these merits, the Li-S battery utilizing CZO/CNT separator delivered a high discharge capacity of 1339 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C. In particular, the battery exhibited exceptional cycling stability, retaining a reversible capacity of 490 mAh g −1 for 800 cycles at 2 C, with a 0.059% capacity fade per cycle. This research demonstrates the potential of CZO/CNT composite in enhancing Li-S battery performance, offering a promising approach for developing advanced separator materials. Graphical This designed CZO/CNT-modified separator effectively facilitates Li 2 S deposition and enhances the redox kinetics. Consequently, the resulting Li–S battery exhibits robust cycling stability and remarkable capacity retention.

Lithium sulfide (Li2S) is one of the most promising cathode materials for the next-generation advanced Li-ion batteries because of its high theoretical capacity (1167 mA h g−1) and large energy density. However, Li2S suffers from poor rate performance and short cycle life due to its insulating nature and polysulfide shuttle during cycling. In this work, we have proposed a facile and scalable strategy for the synthesis of nanosized Li2S particles via a solution-based method. For further application in Li–S batteries, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology is used to successfully deposit a uniform conductive carbon layer on the Li2S particles to obtain a core–shell structured nanocomposite (nano-Li2S@C). The average size of the as-prepared nano-Li2S particles is around 100 nm, and covered by a carbon shell with a thickness of ∼20 nm. These nanoscale Li2S@C particles guarantee a short diffusion distance of lithium ions and the protective carbon layer allows fast electron transport as well as effectively constraining the migration of the soluble polysulfides. As a result, the core–shell structured nano-Li2S@C cathodes show outstanding electrochemical performance with a high initial discharge capacity of 1083.5 mA h g−1 at 0.2C and 766.3 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles with a low decay of 0.15% per cycle. The enhanced electrochemical performance is due to the core-shelled architecture with enhanced electrical conductivity and better suppression effect for the polysulfide shuttle.

All-solid-state lithium batteries have been recognized as the next generation energy storage/conversion devices for many high-power and safe applications. Li 7 P 3 S 11 glass ceramics, as a promising solid electrolyte, has shown a high application possibility. Although the synthesis of Li 7 P 3 S 11 by wet-chemical method is more controllable and can be well matched with the existing battery preparation processes, the chemical reaction mechanism of such a liquid-phase reaction process is not fully understood, and also its ionic conductivity is lower than that obtained by solid-state methods. In this paper, we have clarified that the liquid-phase reaction is mainly the process of lone-pair electrons of Li 2 S to attack the bridged S on P 2 S 5 to obtain compounds with different element ratios, which is explored by recording different reaction times and adjusting different proportions of the phase transitions in acetonitrile (ACN) solvent. The only precipitate phase is found to be Li 3 PS 4 ·ACN, which can react with soluble phases with higher P content such as Li 2 P 4 S 11 , Li 4 P 4 S 12 and so on to obtain Li 4 P 2 S 7 for the formation of Li 3 PS 4 ·ACN and Li 4 P 2 S 7 ·ACN (molar ratio 1:1) in the liquid phase . Finally, Li 7 P 3 S 11 is formed by the equimolar reaction of above two compounds during the calcination. XPS and Raman results indicate that the low conductivity of liquid-phase synthesized Li 7 P 3 S 11 solid electrolyte may be induced by the residual Li 4 P 2 S 6 , which is caused by the inadequate contact and coverage of gel-like Li 4 P 2 S 7 with solid Li 3 PS 4 , resulting in the desulfurization reaction of Li 4 P 2 S 7 during the heat-treatment.
