In order to improve the electrochemical performance of LiFePO 4 (LFP) electrode, Cu and Mg co-doped LFP cathode materials were synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The phase purity and morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Based on co-doped cathode material, the coin-type cells was assembled for galvanostatic charge-discharge testing. The combined synergistic effect of co-doping into LFP were investigated through density functional theory(DFT) calculations. The first-principles calculation method was employed to study the thermodynamic stability, electronic structure properties, intercalation voltage, and lithium-ion diffusion characteristics of Cu and Mg-doped LiFePO 4 . The results show that smaller particle sizes and larger specific surface areas for Cu and Mg co-doping. It facilitates the diffusion of LFP on the surface and within the bulk of the cathode material during charge and discharge processes. This leads to reduce polarization and thus improve electrochemical performance. A higher initial discharge specific capacity of 142.4 mAh/g is exhibited compared to the undoped counterpart. The incorporation of Cu and Mg reduces the band gap from 3.66 eV to 0.4 eV. This suggests that the electrical conductivity is improved due to electrons more easily transition from the valence band to the conduction band. After co-doping, the lithium ion diffusion barrier decreases from 1.08 eV to 0.75 eV. It is predicted that lithium ions diffuse in LFP-CM six orders of magnitude faster than in its intrinsic counterpart. Meanwhile, a platform with a high operating voltage of 3.64 V makes a positive contribution to the electrochemical performance.

To mitigate the environmental impact of the improper disposal of spent LiFePO 4 batteries and reduce resource waste, the development of LiFePO 4 recycling technologies is of paramount importance. Meanwhile, olivine-structured NaFePO 4 in sodium-ion batteries has received great attention, due to its high theoretical specific capacity of 154 mAh g −1 and excellent stability. However, olivine NaFePO 4 only can be synthesized from olivine LiFePO 4 . Accordingly, in this proposal, developing the continuous flow electrochemical solid-liquid reactor-based metal ion insertion technology is to utilize the olivine FePO 4 , recycled from LiFePO 4 , and to synthesize NaFePO 4 . Additionally, by employing I − as the reducing agent, NaFePO 4 is successfully synthesized with a discharge-specific capacity of 134 mAh g −1 at 0.1C and a remarkable capacity retention rate of 86.5% after 100 cycles at 0.2C. And the reasons for sodium deficiency in the synthesized NFP are elucidated through first-principles calculations. Furthermore, the kinetics of the solid-solution reaction 2 (Na 2/3+β PO 4 → Na 1-α FePO 4 ) mechanism improve with cycling and are sensitive to temperature. Utilizing a minimal amount of reducing agent in the electrochemical reactor, NaFePO 4 synthesis is successfully achieved. This innovative approach offers a new, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly strategy for preparing NaFePO 4 from recycling LiFePO 4 .

Designing cathodes with more electroactive materials is a promising way to improve the energy density of batteries while it is highly challenging due to their low electronic/ionic transport, poor structural integrity, and irreversible Li + consumption in full-cell configurations. Herein, we demonstrate a self-supporting cathode based on 3 dimensional MXene-Carbon nanotubes-Cellulose-LiFePO 4 (3D-MCC-LFP). The 3D-MCC-LFP cathodes demonstrate some distinct advantages over conventional LFP cathode (Con-LFP), including higher LFP loading (120 mg cm −2 ) and faster electronic/ionic transport (1.587 S cm −1 /1.18 × 10 −11 cm 2 S −1 ), which result in better electrochemical performance. Such as, the 3D-MCC-LFP 10 cathode (LFP loading is 10 mg cm −2 ) offers a significantly higher capacity of 0.86 mAh cm −2 at 5 C (1 C=170 mA g −1 ) than Con-LFP 10 of 0.05 mAh cm −2 , and a higher retaining capacity of 1.45 mAh cm −2 after 500 cycles at 1 C than Con-LFP 10 (1.16 mAh cm −2 ). Meanwhile, the 3D-MCC-LFP 120 cathode demonstrates an ultrahigh areal capacity of 19.2 mAh cm −2 . Furthermore, the assembled 3D-MCC-LFP 60 /SnO 2 full-cell demonstrates a high areal capacity of 6.3 mAh cm −2 at 1.6 mA cm −2 . Considering its traits of ultrahigh area capacity, excellent electronic/ionic transport and self-supporting characteristics, the 3D-MCC-LFP cathode combined with SnO 2 anode is surely promising for high performance lithium-ion batteries.

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) grafted multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs- g -PEG or MP) were synthesized and used to modify LiFePO 4 as cathodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The effects of different molecular weights of PEG grafted on MWCNTs and different mass fractions of MP on the properties of LiFePO 4 /MP composite cathodes were evaluated by their morphology, charge–discharge tests, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy , electrical and thermal conductivities . Their electrochemical behaviors at ambient temperature and low temperature, high rate capability and cycling performance were observed in the presence of the MP additives. The lithium ions diffusion in the LiFePO 4 /MP composite electrodes was almost 2 orders of magnitude higher than that in the LiFePO 4 /acetylene black (AB) electrode when the conductive additive content was 5 wt.%. Thermal studies of LiFePO 4 /MP were also examined by the heat-pole method, which showed higher thermal conductivity of the cathode in cases of MP being incorporated into LiFePO 4 particles than LiFePO 4 cathodes with AB or MWCNTs additives. These results suggest that MP is a promising conductive additive to increase the electrochemical performances, thermal transport and safety of LiFePO 4 cathodes for LIBs.

The rapid expansion in the demand for LiFePO 4 (LFP) batteries has created a pressing need for recycling waste LFP batteries. However, the direct extraction of lithium from their acid leachate remains a significant challenge. This study developed a novel extraction system using tributyl phosphate (TBP) as extractant and ionic liquids (ILs) as co-extractant for selective recovery of Li + from H 2 SO 4 leachate of waste LFP cathode. The single-factor experiment results demonstrated that TBP-[C 4 mim][NTF 2 ] (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide) exhibited higher lithium extraction efficiency under acidic conditions compared to TBP-[C 4 mim][PF 6 ] (1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate). Moreover, a four-stage cross-current extraction process utilizing the TBP-[C 4 mim][NTF 2 ] system was demonstrated to efficiently and selectively extract lithium from a real H 2 SO 4 leachate, achieving extraction efficiency and separation factor of 92.39% and 197.95, respectively. Mechanism insights from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and theoretical calculations indicate that cationic exchange and a synergistic effect between TBP and IL enhance the selective extraction of lithium. The cation of IL (C 4 mim + ) enters aqueous phase, and Li + are extracted into organic phase in the form of Li + -TBP-[NTF 2 ] - with a larger binding energy. Furthermore, five cycles of extraction and stripping experiments not only yielded a lithium-enriched solution but also demonstrated the excellent stability of the TBP-[C 4 mim][NTF 2 ]. Finally, the Li + was ultimately recovered as high-purity Li 3 PO 4 via the chemical precipitation method. This study provides theoretical and technical references for efficient extraction of lithium from LFP acid leachate, which is crucial for comprehensive utilization of waste LFP cathodes.

Three-dimensional (3D) LiFePO 4 @MWCNTs composite has been prepared using phytic acid as the phosphorus source by a simple solvothermal method combined with freeze drying under vacuum. The relationships between the phase structures, the morphologies and electrochemical performance characteristics of the as-prepared samples are studied using a series of characterization methods. It is found that the MWCNTs wrap around the LiFePO 4 particles to form a 3D network because of the reactions between the special functional groups of the phytic acid with Fe 2+ and –C O or –COOH on the surface of the functionalized MWCNTs, resulting in the improvement of conductivity and the electron and ion transport. Due to these merits of MWCNTs and phytic acid, the LiFePO 4 @MWCNTs exhibits good electrochemical performance with high initial discharge capacities of 152.7, 149.6 and 138.8 mAh g −1 at 1, 2 and 5C, respectively. Even at 10C, it still delivers a capacity of 117.5 mAh g −1 .

Binder-free LiFePO 4 –carbon nanofiber (LiFePO 4 –CNF) composites as lithium-ion battery cathode materials are fabricated by electrospinning and subsequent thermal treatments. The thermal decomposition behavior of the electrospun LiFePO 4 precursor–polyacrylonitrile (LiFePO 4 precursor–PAN) nanofiber composites and the reaction of the LiFePO 4 precursors during thermal treatment are investigated. The effects of thermal treatment parameters such as heating rate, temperature, and duration for stabilization and carbonization on the microstructure, morphology, carbon content, crystal structure of the composites, and electrochemical performance of the resultant half-cell are also studied. When the electrospun LiFePO 4 precursor–PAN nanofiber composites are first stabilized in air at 280 °C for 4 h with a heating rate of 2 °C min −1 and then carbonized in argon at 800 °C for 14 h with a heating rate of 2 °C min −1 , the obtained LiFePO 4 –CNF composites exhibit optimal electrochemical properties in terms of a higher initial discharge capacity, more stable charge–discharge cycle behavior, and better rate performance. The initial discharge capacity of the composites is 146.3 mA h g −1 at a rate of 0.5 C, while exhibiting a stable cycle performance up to 100 cycles. The results demonstrated that the LiFePO 4 –CNF composite cathode materials could be a promising candidate for next-generation lithium-ion batteries and the thermal treatment process is a critical step to prepare LiFePO 4 –CNF composites with optimal performances.

LiFePO 4 is considered a promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries for its high theoretical specific capacity and cycling stability. However, low electrical conductivity and Li-ion diffusion coefficient limit its electrochemical performances. Herein, gold nanorods (Au NRs) with a length of about 40 nm (aspect ratio of 7:1) are successfully prepared by a seed-mediated growth method. LiFePO 4 composite cathodes with 0.1/0.5/1 wt% Au NRs are compared with a pristine LiFePO 4 cathode, which shows that the addition of Au NRs can improve the electron and lithium-ion transport. Specifically, the addition of 1 wt% Au NRs increases the electrical conductivity and lithium-ion diffusion coefficient to 1.99 S cm −1 and 1.32 × 10 −14 cm 2 s −1 , respectively. The distribution of relaxation times analysis is carried out for the electrochemical impedance spectrum data to distinguish different electrochemical reactions within corresponding frequency regions. Particularly, LiFePO 4 with 0.1 wt% Au NRs exhibits a superior rate capability (133.7 mAh g −1 at 2C and 91.9 mAh g −1 at 5C) and stable cycling performance.

Gel electrolytes show certain advantages over conventional liquid and solid electrolytes, but their mechanical strength and surface adhesion to the electrode remain to be improved. To address the challenges, we design and fabricate herein the core–shell nanofiber mats in situ on the LiFePO4 electrode as matrices for gel electrolytes, in which the core is poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) nanofiber and the shell are composite of Al2O3 nanoparticles and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP). The mechanical property of the core–shell polymeric nanofiber mats and their surface interaction with LiFePO4 electrode are characterized complementarily using dynamic thermomechanical analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical properties of the gel electrolytes based on the as-prepared matrices after being loaded with lithium salt solution are studied systematically on half coin cells. It is found that the ultimate strength of the core–shell PMIA@PVdF-HFP/Al2O3 mat can reach 6.70 MPa, 2 times higher than that of the PVdF-HFP/Al2O3 nanofiber mat. Meanwhile, the shell PVdF-HFP/Al2O3 can ensure manifest surface affinity to the LiFePO4 electrode and enhance lithium-ion conductance. Thus, the as-assembled LiFePO4 half coin cells using PMIA@PVdF-HFP/Al2O3 gel electrolyte show good electrochemical performances, especially the long cycle stability with the capacity retention of 96.6% after 600 cycles under 1C.

Lithium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Li) is a promising novel water-based binder for lithium-ion batteries. The direct synthesis of CMC-Li was innovatively developed using abundant wood dissolving pulp materials from hardwood (HW) and softwood (SW). The resulting CMC-Li-HW and CMC-Li-SW binders possessed a suitable degree of substitutions and excellent molecular weight distributions with an appropriate quantity of long- and short-chain celluloses, which facilitated the construction of a reinforced concrete-like bonding system. When used as cathode binders in LiFePO 4 batteries, they uniformly coated and dispersed the electrode materials, formed a compact and stable conductive network with high mechanical strength and showed sufficient lithium replenishment. The prepared LiFePO 4 batteries exhibited good mechanical stability, low charge transfer impedance, high initial discharge capacity (∼180 mAh/g), high initial Coulombic efficiency (99 %), excellent cycling performance (<3% loss over 200 cycles) and good rate capability, thereby outperforming CMC-Na and the widely used cathode binder polyvinylidene fluoride.
