Alleviating the Storage Instability of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 Cathode Materials by Surface Modification with Poly(acrylic acid)

Shiyun Peng,Xiangbang Kong,Jiyang Li,Jing Zeng,Jinbao Zhao

The storage stability of the nickel-rich ternary cathode materials deteriorates with the increase of Ni content, which has become a major obstacle in the practical application process of the materials. In this work, a handy and effective surface modification method with poly(acrylic acid) is developed to solve this issue, and the air sensitivity of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 materials is alleviated successfully by the protective poly(acrylic acid) coating. The poly(acrylic acid) coating can not only reduce the surface alkalinity of NCM811 materials but also prevent direct contact between the materials and H2O/CO2 in the air. Compared with the pristine materials, the modified materials show smaller weight increase, higher capacity and coulomb efficiency, and less change of morphology and structure after storage in the same conditions (55 °C, 80% RH). The fewer surface impurities, more stable near-surface structure, and better electrochemical performance for the modified materials benefit from the protective layer constructed by poly(acrylic acid). This work provides a new perspective and possibility for the improvement of storage stability of nickel-rich materials, showing that modifications with other polymers containing acidic groups are also likely to be feasible for nickel-rich cathode materials.

A Fluorine-free Polysulfone-Polyamide-Polyimide Copolymer Binder for LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 Cathode in Lithium-ion Battery

Peng Hao,Liu Lin,Zhang Qiao,Liu Shuhao,Lin Man,Li Hao,Deng Yonghong,Jiao Chuanlai,Wang Chaoyang,Xu Hongli

High-voltage LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) cathodes are critical for enhancing the energy density of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The development of binders compatible with high-voltage NCM811 cathode materials is crucial to enhance the electrochemical performance of LIBs. However, the traditional fluoropolymer binder, poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF), can potentially leach components or break down into poly(fluoroalkyl substances) (PFAS) chemicals, thereby contributing to PFAS contamination. A novel fluorine-free polymer, polysulfone-polyamide-polyimide (SPIO), was designed and synthesized as a binder for NCM811 cathodes. The SPIO binder exhibits exceptional mechanical properties and superior electrochemical characteristics. The cathode film fabricated with SPIO demonstrated a remarkable delamination force of 8 N (390 N·m −1 ), indicating robust adhesion. The Li∥NCM811 cell incorporating the SPIO binder retained 80% of its initial capacity after 300 cycles at a current density of 0.2 C. In comparison, the control cells assembled with the PVDF binder retained only 52% of their capacities under the same cycling conditions. Furthermore, the SPIO binder exhibited improved compatibility with the electrolyte. Transmission electron microscopy analysis of the cathode films after 100 cycles revealed the formation of a uniform, dense, and continuous chemical-electrochemical interface (CEI) by the SPIO binder on the surface of the NCM811 particles, which significantly contributed to the enhancement of the electrochemical performance. These results highlight the potential of SPIO as an advanced binder material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Nd2O3 encapsulation-assisted surface passivation of Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 active material and its electrochemical performance

Jie Zhu,Guolin Cao,Yunjiao Li,Shilei Wang,Shiyi Deng,Jia Guo,Yongxiang Chen,Tongxing Lei,Jinping Zhang,Shenghong Chang

The transition metals in ternary oxide cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries inevitably exchange with protons in LiPF 6 -containing electrolytes to be dissolved, leading to loss of the active material and rapid capacity fading. Here, a chemically inert Nd 2 O 3 interlayer is employed to avoid the direct contact of the active material (LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 ) and electrolyte. As a result, Nd 2 O 3 -coated LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) shows improved cycle performances with a capacity retention of 88.0% after 100 cycles over 3.0–4.4 V, 9.3% higher than the retention of the bare NCM811. Even at an elevated temperature, Nd 2 O 3 -coated NCM811 exhibits better cycle performance as well. The superior electrochemical performances for Nd 2 O 3 -coated NCM811 are ascribed to that Nd 2 O 3 encapsulation-assisted surface passivation alleviates the undesirable interface side reactions and transition metal dissolution (TMD). These features suggest the promising potential of chemically inert Nd 2 O 3 as a long-acting surface modifier in passivating electrolyte/electrode interface.

Isocyanoethyl Methacrylate (IMA) as a Bifunctional Electrolyte Additive for LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2/Graphite Batteries with Enhanced Performance

Jing Lu,Shuai Li,Liqin Jiang,Tianxiang Yang,Weizhen Fan,Wenlian Wang,Xiaoyang Zhao,Xiaoxi Zuo,Junmin Nan

Graphical Isocyanoethyl methacrylate (IMA) containing −N=C=O group is developed as a bifunctional electrolyte additive through the film-forming, H 2 O removal, and HF reduction to modify the electrode-electrolyte interfaces and improve the performance of high-nickel LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811)/graphite lithium-ion battery. After 450 cycles under the normal voltage range of 2.75 to 4.20 V, the capacity retention of the battery with 0.5 wt.% IMA additive increases from 50.7 % to 78.0 % compared to the battery without the additive. Under the high voltage range of 2.75 to 4.40 V, the capacity retention of the battery with IMA increases from 62.8 % to 81.9 % after 150 cycles. By now, as the promising high-energy cathode materials of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the high-nickel LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) still have technical problems such as poor electrode-electrolyte interface stability and sensitivity to H 2 O and HF in the electrolyte to be solved. In this work, isocyanoethyl methacrylate (IMA) containing −N=C=O group is developed as a bifunctional electrolyte additive through the film-forming, H 2 O removal, and HF reduction to modify the electrode-electrolyte interfaces and improve the performance of NCM811/graphite LIBs. After 450 cycles under the normal voltage range of 2.75 to 4.20 V, the capacity retention of the battery with 0.5 wt.% IMA additive increases from 50.7 % to 78.0 % compared to the battery without the additive. And under the high voltage range of 2.75 to 4.40 V, the capacity retention of the battery with IMA increases from 62.8 % to 81.9 % after 150 cycles. It is demonstrated that the IMA additive as the H 2 O and HF scavenger of electrolyte also facilitate the electrochemical oxidation-reduction reactions on two electrodes to form high-quality interfacial films, which stabilizes the anode and cathode interfaces and subsequently improves the cycling performance of the batteries. These results show that the electrolyte with IMA additive has promising prospects in the application of high-nickel NCM-based LIBs and provide the idea to evaluate the organic molecules containing −N=C=O group as the functional electrolyte additives as well.

In situ lithiation modulation of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 as bifunctional electrocatalysts for highly efficient overall water splitting

Lina Jia,Gaohui Du,Di Han,Yunting Wang,Wenqi Zhao,Shixian Chen,Qingmei Su,Bingshe Xu

LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) is a common cathode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), and the ever-increasing consumption of large quantities of LIBs raises critical concerns about their recycling. Herein, we propose an in-situ lithiation route to tune the structure and electrocatalytic properties of NCM811 by Li + intercalation and exfoliation in LIBs. In this strategy, the morphology and microstructure of the lithiated NCM811 can be controlled by a specified discharge voltage. The lithiation modulation effectively converted the large NCM811 particles into many flower-like nanosheets . The resulting nanosheets are interconnected and have a rich porous structure, which is conducive to the complete penetration and diffusion of electrolytes and accelerating the charge transfer rate. Moreover, oxygen vacancies and amorphous regions were induced in the nanosheets to provide more active sites. The novel lithiation-modulated nanosheets demonstrate high activity and bifunctional characteristics for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Specifically, the lithiated NCM811 nanosheets demonstrate a low HER overpotential of 58 mV@10 mA cm −2 and OER overpotential of 222@10 mA cm −2 . The assembled electrolytic cell for overall water-splitting requires only 1.74 V to reach 100 mA cm −2 with outstanding durability. This work provides a unique strategy for structural modulation of NCM811 cathode in LIBs as high-performance electrocatalysts for water splitting, and demonstrates a high-value recycle of spent LIB electrodes.

Low-temperature all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries based on a di-cross-linked starch solid electrolyte

Zehua Lin,Jin Liu

The preparation of a low-temperature solid electrolyte is a challenge for the commercialization of the all-solid-state lithium-ion battery (ASSLIB). Here we report a starch-based solid electrolyte that displays phenomenal electrochemical properties below room temperature (RT). The starch host of the electrolyte is synthesized by two cross-linking reactions, which provide sufficient and orderly binding sites for the lithium salt to dissolve. At 25 °C, the solid electrolyte has exceptional ionic conductivity (σ, 3.10 × 10−4 S cm−1), lithium-ion transfer number (t+, 0.82) and decomposition potential (dP, 4.91 V). At −20 °C, it still has outstanding σ (3.10 × 10−5 S cm−1), t+ (0.72) and dP (5.50 V). The LiFePO4 ASSLIB assembled with the electrolyte exhibits unique specific capacity and long cycling life below RT, and the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 ASSLIB can operate at 4.3 V and 0 °C. This work provides a solution to solve the current challenges of ASSLIBs to widen their scope of applications.

Improved cyclic stability of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 via Ti substitution with a cut-off potential of 4.5 V

Rui Du,Yujing Bi,Wenchao Yang,Zhe Peng,Meng Liu,Yang Liu,Baoming Wu,Bangcheng Yang,Fei Ding,Deyu Wang

To improve the cyclic stability of LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 cycled between 2.8 and 4.5   V vs. Li/Li + , titanium was incorporated into LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 at various molar concentrations of 1, 2, 3 and 5% during the synthesis. The XRD , EDS and XPS analyses indicated that the titanium ions were effectively incorporated into the lattice of ternary oxides by occupying the transitional metal positions. Among the investigated molar concentrations, 2% Ti-substituted LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 exhibited the best multifaceted performances with a relatively high capacity (205.7   mA   h   g −1 at 0.1   C), good rate capability (178.2   mA   h   g −1 at 1   C, 155.3   mA   h   g −1 at 5   C) and acceptable cyclic stability (86.9% at the 200th). The post-mortem analysis indicated that Ti substitution alleviates cracking from secondary particles to primary ones. This behavior is most likely due to the decreased ratio of volumetric deformation ( i.e. , 4.82% for the 2% Ti-substituted sample, which is 19.8% lower than that of the pristine one). Our results demonstrate that mechanical properties may play a crucial role in its long cyclability for use as a high-capacity ternary cathode.

Ultrastable solid-state LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2/Li battery by suppressed defluorination reaction and in situ passivation on electrodes

Junbao Lai,Kaibo Fan,Pengwei Zhou,Yanmin Zhou,Hao Tang,Guiping Dai,Gaixia Zhang,Long Tan

In addition to the Li + transport kinetics, the interface stability of the solid-state electrolyte is also critical for solid-state Li-metal batteries (SLMBs), especially for nickel-rich cathode-based ones. Herein, we develop an air-processable composite polymer electrolyte (CPE) using polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) as matrix, LiCF 3 SO 3 as Li-salt, Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 as fast Li-conductor and C 4 BLiO 8 (LiBOB) as additive. The presence of LiBOB suppress the defluorination reaction of PVDF in electrolyte solution , that reduce the corrosion reaction on LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) particles and enhance the intermolecular interactions between [Li(DMF) x ] + and PVDF as well. Importantly, the formed H 3 BO 3 in CPE induce the in situ passivation of Li-B-O/B-O on surface of NCM811 and Li-metal, which impedes the crack of NCM811 particles and growth of Li-dendrites. Thus, NCM811/Li battery exhibits a high specific capacity up to 196.1 mAh g −1 (0.1C) and excellent long-term stability. Specifically, a capacity retention rate of 71.8 % (134.5/181.1 mAh g −1 ) and 78.7 % (132.1/167.9 mAh g −1 ) has been achieved at 0.2C and 0.5C after 500 cycles, respectively, which represent one of the best performances in the field. This strategy also greatly enhance the cyclic stability of LiFePO 4 /Li battery, which shows a capacity retention rate of 92 % (143.5 mAh g −1 ) after 700 cycles.

A functional electrolyte additive enabling robust interphases in high-voltage Li‖LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 batteries at elevated temperatures

Wei-Chen Zheng,Chen-Guang Shi,Peng Dai,Zheng Huang,Jin-Xia Lin,Hui Chen,Miao-Lan Sun,Chong-Heng Shen,Chen-Xu Luo,Qiong Wang,Xin Feng,Yi-Min Wei,Ling Huang,Shi-Gang Sun

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) with Ni-rich cathode materials providing ultra-high energy density (∼500 W h kg−1) are expected to be the next generation of batteries. However, high-voltage LMBs exhibit inferior electrochemical performance at elevated temperatures, due to severe dendrite growth in lithium metal anodes and the structural degradation of Ni-rich cathodes, which should be paid attention to in terms of their practical application. Herein, by introducing 1,3-propane sultone (PS) into the carbonate electrolytes, satisfying cycling stability of Li‖LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) batteries at a high cut-off voltage of 4.45 V and an elevated temperature of 45 °C was achieved, which also shows higher ionic conductivity, wettability and thermodynamic stability. This approach enables uniform lithium plating/stripping at elevated temperatures, because of the construction of a LiF/Li2SO3-rich interphase layer. Besides, PS inhibits drastic structural change and interfacial side reactions on NCM811. It is also noteworthy that Li‖NCM811 full cells delivered decent performance at high-load cathodes, ultra-thin lithium anodes and lean electrolytes cycling at 4.45 V and 45 °C. This strategy provides a feasible solution for boosting high energy density LMBs under extreme conditions.

Performance optimization of Al–Y co-doped ZrO2-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode material for lithium-ion batteries

Zhang Xiaoru,Luo Laima,Song Jing,Han Mingming,Sun Hongqian,Cao Lei,Wu Yucheng

A solvent-free strategy combining dry ball milling and calcination is developed to fabricate an Al-Y co-doped ZrO 2 (Al-YSZ) coating on LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) cathodes. Structural characterizations confirm Al-YSZ induces NCM811 lattice expansion (unit cell volume + 0.00026 nm 3 ) and reduces cation mixing ( I (003) / I (104)  = 1.621). TEM shows a ~ 50 nm coating with intimate matrix contact. Electrochemically, it delivers 218.9 mAh/g at 0.1 C (21.7% higher than pristine), retains 161.5 mAh/g after 200 cycles at 1 C, and exhibits superior stability under 4.5 V (137.3 mAh/g after 200 cycles), 45 ℃ (64.5% retention), and 5 C (86.0% retention). Mechanisms involve enhanced interfacial stability, optimized Li + kinetics (diffusion coefficient 2.21 × 10 −12 cm 2 /s after cycling), and mitigated structural degradation. This scalable green strategy advances high-nickel cathode optimization.

Surface in-situ reconstruction of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode materials interacting with antimony compounds and the electrochemical performances

Yunjiao Li,Yongxiang Chen,Linshan Luo,Xianquan Ming,Jianguo Li,Tongxing Lei,Shiyi Deng,Jia Guo,Jie Zhu,Shenhong Chang

Interfacial stability is regarded as one of the greatest challenges in the commercialization of Ni-rich layered cathode materials for lithium battery . Surface modification can solve these issues to obtain superior electrochemical performances . Herein, LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) cathode surface is reconstructed by a simple solid-state method using antimony oxides as modified agents. The modified mechanisms study show that the antimony oxides (Sb 2 O 5 ) can react with the surface lithium residues effectively and partial surface lattice lithium on the NCM811 surface to further construct the LiSbO 3 /Li–Sb– Me –O ( Me  = Ni, Co, Mn) mixed coating layers. The uniform coating layer is mainly ascribed to the droplet spreading behaviors of the low smelting antimony oxides. The electrochemical measurements show that the Sb-modified NCM811 electrodes deliver 90.27% (180 mA g −1 ) and 96.07% (1440 mA g −1 ) capacity retentions over 3.0–4.3 V after 200 cycles, respectively, which are higher than 77.40 and 74.75% of the bare NCM811. The enhanced electrochemical performances are mainly benefitted to the enhanced the lithium transportation, the suppressed impedances increase and the more stable crystal structure.

2,2,2-Trifluoroethyl nonafluorobutanesulfonate as bifunctional electrolyte additive for high-energy-density 4.5 V LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2||Li batteries

Zhengping Ding,Ran Song,Yu Shen,Huahui Lin,Peng Wei,Xiangqun Zhuge,Ke Qu,Zhenzhong Yang,Yurong Ren

Combining a high cut-off voltage cathode with a high specific-capacity lithium metal anode offers a promising path toward ultra-high-energy-density batteries (> 400 Wh kg -1 ). However, the practical application of LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811)||Li batteries with a 4.5 V cut-off voltage is challenged by severe interface deterioration. This study introduces a novel bifunctional electrolyte additive called 2,2,2-Trifluoroethyl Nonafluorobutanesulfonate (TNS), designed to form a thin, robust electrolyte interface layer on both cathode and anode surfaces. Detailed analysis reveals that TNS decomposes and modifies the solid-electrolyte-interface layer. Through the synergistic effects of fluoride and sulfonate functional groups, the resulting cathode-electrolyte-interface (CEI) enhances the structural stability of NCM811 while providing a high-efficiency lithium-ion transport channel to accelerate Li + insertion and extraction. At a cut-off voltage of 4.5 V, NCM811||Li batteries with 1 % TNS (by weight) exhibit high discharge capacity retention of 74.2 % after 150 cycles at a 1C rate and 60.1 % after 150 cycles at a 2C rate. This study offers valuable insights for designing high-voltage electrolyte additives in ultra-high-energy-density lithium metal batteries.
