Improving hydrogen sorption performances of MgH2 through nanoconfinement in a mesoporous CoS nano-boxes scaffold

Zhewen Ma,Subrata Panda,Qiuyu Zhang,Fengzhan Sun,Darvaish Khan,Wenjiang Ding,Jianxin Zou

For the first time, structure-modified CoS-nanoboxes (CoS-NBs) scaffold as a multifunctional Supporting material has been developed by using a template-consumption method for nanoconfinement of MgH 2 particles within its mesoporous structure (denoted as MgH 2 @CoS-NBs). Microstructural observations via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveal the uniform distribution of MgH 2 nanocrystals within the mesoporous networks of CoS-NBs scaffold and the surface decoration of MgH 2 crystals by in-situ formed MgS phase. The peculiar core-shell structured morphology of MgH 2 nanocrystals and the “nano-size effect” notably enhances the thermodynamic properties of MgH 2 through the reduction in hydriding and dehydriding enthalpies (−65.6 ± 1.1 and 68.1 ± 1.4 kJ mol −1 H 2 , respectively). Moreover, the improved hydrogen sorption kinetics can be attributed to the catalytic effect of MgS through reducing the intrinsic kinetic energy barriers for both hydriding and dehydriding (57.4 ± 2.2 and 120.8 ± 3.2 kJ mol −1 H 2 , respectively). The “nano-size effect” of nanoconfined Mg/MgH 2 crystals, the catalyzing effect of MgS and the multifunctional role of CoS-NBs scaffold are likely to be synergistically contributed to the superior hydrogen sorption performances of MgH 2 @CoS-NBs composite, as compared to the pure MgH 2 .

Nanoparticle nitrogen-doped lanthanum titanate as a MgH2 catalyst to provide enhanced hydrogen storage properties

Qingjie He,Weiqi Sun,Hongfei Li,Yazhou Wang,Chengwang Yin,Cuili Xiang,Yongjin Zou,Fen Xu,Lixian Sun

MgH 2 is thought to be the most promising solid hydrogen storage material because of its high mass hydrogen storage density (7.6 %), in addition to its good safety profile, high efficiency, and environmentally friendly nature. Nevertheless, the actual application of MgH 2 is hindered by its slow kinetic characteristics and high working temperatures. This work reports the successful preparation of N-doped LaTiO 3 (N-LTO) by a straightforward hydrothermal calcination process, followed by doping into MgH 2 to improve its hydrogen storage properties. The incorporation of 7 wt% N-LTO reduced the initial dehydrogenation temperature of the MgH 2 composite to 193 °C, and it was found that the composite rapidly release ∼6.2 wt% H 2 within 5 min at 300 °C. During the rehydrogenation tests, the composite absorbed ∼4.7 wt% H 2 under a 20 bar pressure of H 2 at a low temperature of 50 °C, reflecting a significant improvement in the kinetic performance of H 2 absorption/release from MgH 2 . This improved hydrogen storage performance can be attributed to the increased electron density on the surface of the material following nitrogen doping, which promotes its reactivity. Moreover, the electron transfer taking place between multivalent titanium ions during hydrogenation facilitates breakage of the Mg–H bond, which promotes the dissociation and recombination of hydrogen, thereby improving the kinetic properties of the material.

Fabrication of V2O3-TiO2-rGO ternary heterojunction composite to enhance the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2

Ziqi Liu,Hua Ning,Ruojiang Liu,Sizhi Ding,Jiakun Yang,Yuanxin Tan,Yi Fan,Renhuan Li,Peilin Qing,Haizhen Liu,Jin Guo,Zhiqiang Lan

The application prospects of MgH 2 as a potential solid hydrogen storage material are limited by its stable thermodynamic properties and slow hydrogenation/dehydrogenation kinetics. In this study, a ternary heterogeneous composite material V 2 O 3 -TiO 2 -rGO (V-T-rGO) was synthesized using the ultrasonic hydrothermal method and doped into MgH 2 through ball milling to improve its hydrogen storage performance. The experimental results demonstrated that the MgH 2  + V-T-rGO samples exhibit superior hydrogen storage properties compared with single-doped V 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , rGO or V-T materials. Specifically, it can uptake hydrogen at room temperature, and adsorbs 5.00 wt% H 2 in just 4 min at 150 °C, and releases 5.87 wt% H 2 within 6 min at 325 °C, demonstrating a faster reaction rate and successful hydrogen absorption. Additionally, the hydrogenation/dehydrogenation activation energies of MgH 2  + V-T-rGO samples are measured at 27.1/72.3 kJ·mol −1 , representing a reduction of 51.2/59.2 kJ·mol −1 compared to MgH 2 alone. Mechanistic analysis revealed that the multiphase composite system produced synergistic catalytic effects, providing abundant active sites and hydrogen diffusion channels to enhance the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . This study presents an innovative approach for constructing transition metal oxide heterostructured materials and holds significant reference value for applications in the field of hydrogen storage.

Boosting MgH2 hydrogen storage with hydrothermally synthesized FL-V2C-MnO2: Achieving superior performance at low temperatures

Weitao Shi,Yuanxin Tan,Jiakun Yang,Haizhen Liu,Yi Fan,Jin Guo,Zhiqiang Lan

In this study, we developed a novel FL-V 2 C-MnO 2 composite catalyst via hydrothermal synthesis, achieving the uniform dispersion of nano-scale MnO 2 particles on few-layer V 2 C MXene substrates. Subsequently, the catalytic effects of this composite on the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 were systematically investigated. Remarkably, the MgH 2 system modified with 10 wt% FL-V 2 C-MnO 2 demonstrated superior hydrogen storage characteristics. (1) The initial dehydrogenation temperature decreased substantially to 185 °C (39 % reduction compared to pristine MgH 2 ) with room-temperature hydrogen reabsorption capabilities. (2) At 275 °C, the composite achieved 6.3 wt% hydrogen desorption within 780 s, representing 139 %, 130 %, and 185 % improvements over V 2 C-, FL-V 2 C-, and MnO 2 -doped MgH 2 systems, respectively. Notably, this kinetics enhancement corresponded to a 12.6-fold increase compared to undoped MgH 2 at 325 °C. Mechanistic studies revealed that the synergistic interplay between V 2 C and MnO 2 derivatives established multiphase interfaces that significantly accelerated hydrogen sorption kinetics. Specifically, the in-situ formation of MnO during mechanical activation created abundant active sites, while the two-dimensional V 2 C substrate facilitated electron transfer and prevented nanoparticle agglomeration. This multiscale coordination effect between the MXene support and transition metal oxides established new pathways for destabilizing Mg-H bonds and promoting hydrogen dissociation/recombination processes.

TiCrNb hydride fabricated by melt spinning as the efficient catalyst for enhancing the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2

Houqun Xiao,Luocai Yi,Huxu Lei,Yu Xu,Xiaoxuan Zhang,Huazhou Hu,Ruizhu Tang,Qian Li,Qingjun Chen

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) has garnered significant attention as a promising material for high-capacity hydrogen storage. However, its commercial application remains challenging due to the high operating temperature and slow reaction kinetics. In this study, melt-spun Ti 45 Cr 40 Nb 15 (with a BCC phase) hydride (designated as TiCrNbH x− MS) was synthesized and used to form a nano-multiphase composite to improve the de-/rehydrogenation properties of MgH 2 through ball milling. The incorporation of TiCrNbH x− MS was shown to significantly enhance the hydrogen de-/rehydrogenation properties of MgH 2 . The MgH 2 + 20 wt% TiCrNbH x− MS composite exhibits an appealing initial dehydrogenation temperature of 163 °C and can absorb hydrogen at room temperature. Notably, it releases 5.8 wt% hydrogen in 700 s at 230 °C and recharges 4.3 wt% hydrogen in just 2 mins at 150 °C. Even after 100 cycles, it retains a reversible hydrogen capacity of 4.98 wt%. Kinetic analysis revealed that the dehydrogenation rate follows the Chou surface penetration model. Microstructural analysis showed that the FCC phase of the melt-spun TiCrNbH x− MS hydride reversibly transformed into the BCC phase during the de-/rehydrogenation process in the composite. Numerous phase interfaces were generated and uniformly dispersed on the MgH 2 surface, providing additional hydrogen diffusion pathways and heterogeneous nucleation sites for Mg/MgH 2 , thereby further improving the hydrogen de-/rehydrogenation kinetics of the system. This study offers valuable insights into the use of multiphase composites to enhance MgH 2 performance.

Low temperature thermolysis and hydrolysis of MgH2 generated from a titanium-mediated hydrogenation of Mg2Si

Shusheng Cao,Yinghui Li,Bolun Wang,Wentao Rao,Yanyue Wang,Hao Du,Dong Wang,Jiaqi Zhang,Xi Lin,Jianxin Zou

The magnesium-silicon hydrogen storage system (Mg 2 Si+H 2 ↔MgH 2 +Si) has attracted considerable attention with the potential of achieving near-room temperature hydrogen sorption since the reaction enthalpy is only ∼36.8 kJ/mol H 2 , offering much better thermodynamic properties over MgH 2 . However, the rehydrogenation of Mg 2 Si faces significant kinetic barriers, restricting its practical utilization. In this work, hydrogen-assisted high-energy ball milling (HHBM) was employed to hydrogenate Mg 2 Si. XRD and HRTEM results confirmed that Mg 2 Si was successfully converted into MgH 2 under the influence of titanium (Ti), achieving a conversion rate up to 76%. Aberration-corrected TEM (AC-TEM) revealed that in situ formed MgH 2 and titanium silicide (TiSi 2 ) were homogenously mixed with robust interfaces. Such a growth mode reduces the migration path of Si atoms and the stability of Mg 2 Si, thus promoting the formation of MgH 2 . Furthermore, the as-synthesized MgH 2 particles with ultrafine particle size and adjacent catalysts show superior thermolysis and hydrolysis performances. Consequently, the composite exhibits excellent hydrogen storage properties, absorbing 50% of its total hydrogen capacity at room temperature and initiating dehydrogenation at 114.3 °C. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (ISXRD) confirms the dehydrogenation of in situ generated ultrafine MgH 2 and part of TiSi 2 is converted to Mg 2 Si at 283 °C. In addition, the ultrafine, defect-rich MgH 2 particles show favorable hydrolysis kinetics and high conversion efficiency at relatively low temperatures (91.9% of the hydrogen yield can be achieved at 5 °C). This method developed in this work exhibits a new way to synthesize high-performance hydrogen storage materials.

In situ creation of a catalytic multiphase and multiscale surroundings for remarkable hydrogen storage performance of MgH2

Lingchao Zhang,Xin Zhang,Wenxuan Zhang,Fang Fang,Juan Li,Jianjiang Hu,Changdong Gu,Wenping Sun,Mingxia Gao,Hongge Pan,Yongfeng Liu

Catalyst-modified magnesium hydride (MgH2) holds the greatest promise as a solid-state hydrogen storage medium for mobile and stationary applications. However, the design and fabrication of highly active catalysts that enable MgH2 to reversibly desorb/absorb a large amount of hydrogen still remains challenging. In this work, a novel nanostructured ZrFe2 (nano-ZrFe2) measuring 30–120 nm in size was designed and fabricated as a catalyst precursor, which was readily converted into ultrafine ZrH2 and metallic Fe nanoparticles upon ball milling with MgH2 and first de-/hydrogenation, consequently delivering quite high catalytic activity for hydrogen storage in MgH2. MgH2 containing 10 wt% nano-ZrFe2 desorbed 6.2 wt% of H2 starting from approximately 193 °C, which was lowered by 35 °C with respect to the micron-ZrFe2-modified MgH2 (∼228 °C). When operated at a hydrogen pressure of 50 bars, the dehydrogenated sample absorbed ∼5.3 wt% of H2 at 200 °C within 30 minutes. The remarkably improved kinetic properties of MgH2 are mainly attributed to the ultrasmall nanoparticles and uniform, dispersive distribution of in situ formed ZrH2 and Fe. Such in situ conversion of nano-ZrFe2 not only provided a multiphase and multiscale catalytic environment that enabled high reactivity and catalytic activity but also facilitated H diffusion owing to increased interfaces, consequently promoting the dissociation and recombination of H2 molecules. These important insights in the new nanoscaled intermetallics broaden the scope of the design and synthesis of much higher active catalysts for hydrogen storage in light-metal hydrides, especially in MgH2.

Highly active multivalent multielement catalysts derived from hierarchical porous TiNb2O7 nanospheres for the reversible hydrogen storage of MgH2

Zhang Lingchao,Wang Ke,Liu Yongfeng,Zhang Xin,Hu Jianjiang,Gao Mingxia,Pan Hongge

Critical limitations in applying MgH 2 as a hydrogen-storage medium include the high H 2 desorption temperature and slow reaction kinetics. In this study, we synthesized hierarchical porous TiNb 2 O 7 spheres in micrometer scale built with 20–50 nm nanospheres, which showed stable activity to catalyze hydrogen storage in MgH 2 as precursors. The addition of 7 wt.% TiNb 2 O 7 in MgH 2 reduced the dehydrogenation onset temperature from 300 to 177 °C. At 250 °C, approximately 5.5 wt.% H 2 was rapidly released in 10 min. Hydrogen uptake was detected even at room temperature under 50 bar hydrogen; 4.5 wt.% H 2 was absorbed in 3 min at 150 °C, exhibiting a superior low-temperature hydrogenation performance. Moreover, nearly constant capacity was observed from the second cycle onward, demonstrating stable cyclability. During the ball milling and initial de/hydrogenation process, the high-valent Ti and Nb of TiNb 2 O 7 were reduced to the lower-valent species or even zero-valent metal, which in situ created multivalent multielement catalytic surroundings. A strong synergistic effect was obtained for hybrid oxides of Nb and Ti by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which largely weakens the Mg-H bonding and results in a large reduction in kinetic barriers for hydrogen storage reactions of MgH 2 . Our findings may guide the further design and development of high-performance complex catalysts for the reversible hydrogen storage of hydrides.

Graphene-induced growth of N-doped niobium pentaoxide nanorods with high catalytic activity for hydrogen storage in MgH2

Ke Wang,Xin Zhang,Yongfeng Liu,Zhuanghe Ren,Xuelian Zhang,Jianjiang Hu,Mingxia Gao,Hongge Pan

High operation temperatures and slow kinetics remain big challenges for using magnesium (Mg) as a practical hydrogen storage medium. In this work, a novel graphene-guided nucleation and growth process was developed for the preparation of N-doped Nb 2 O 5 nanorods that enable remarkably improved hydrogen storage properties of MgH 2 . The nanorods were measured to be 10–20 nm in diameter. MgH 2 doped with 10 wt% of the nanorods released 6.2 wt% H 2 from 170 °C, which is 130 °C lower than additive-free MgH 2 , thanks to a 40% reduction in the kinetic barriers. About 5.5 wt% of H 2 was desorbed in isothermal dehydrogenation test at 175 °C. Reloading of hydrogen was notably completed at 25 °C under 50 atm of hydrogen pressure, which has not been reported before. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate the extended bond lengths and weakened bond strengths of Mg-H or H-H when MgH 2 /H 2 adsorbs on the Nb-N-O/graphene model, consequently favouring lower operating temperatures and improved kinetics for hydrogen storage in MgH 2 catalyzed by the graphene-guided N-Nb 2 O 5 nanorods. Our findings provide useful insights in the design and preparation of high-performance catalysts of transition metals and rare metals for on-board hydrogen storage.

In-situ formed Ti/TiH2 from exfoliated few-layered Ti3C2Tx as hydrogen pump enhances the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2

Fang Liu,Jiali Wang,Wei Chen,Xiaoying Zhang,Shengting Li,Jinping Li,Yu-Fei Song,Jinfeng Chu,Guang Liu

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is broadly‌ deemed as one of the most prospective solid-state hydrogen storage materials. However, its large-scale application is hindered by several drawbacks, including an excessive dehydrogenation temperature (>300 °C), sluggish kinetic behavior, and inevitable agglomeration and growth during cycling. To address these challenges, two-dimensional few-layered laminated‌ titanium carbide catalyst (FL-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) was synthesized via LiF/HCl etching followed by liquid-phase ultrasonic exfoliation. These FL-Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets exhibit efficient catalytic activity for MgH 2 hydrogen storage. The incorporation of 5 wt% FL-Ti 3 C 2 T x significantly reduces the initial dehydrogenation temperature of MgH 2 from 325 °C to 199 °C, while enabling the dehydrogenated sample to reabsorb hydrogen at room temperature. The MgH 2  + 5 wt% FL-Ti 3 C 2 T x composite demonstrates remarkable kinetic performance, releasing 6.5 wt% H 2 within 8 min at 300 °C and uptaking 5.49 wt% H 2 within 1 min at 100 °C. Even after 50 cycles of consecutive dehydrogenation and rehydrogenation, the composite retained a hydrogen storage capacity of 6.90 wt%, corresponding to a 95.30 % capacity retention rate. Microstructure analysis and theoretical calculations reveal that the unique lamellar morphology of FL-Ti 3 C 2 T x not only provides abundant active sites and hydrogen diffusion paths, but also effectively suppresses the agglomeration and growth of Mg/MgH 2 matrix during the hydrogen absorption and desorption. More importantly, the in-situ formed Ti/TiH 2 functions as a “hydrogen pump” accelerating hydrogen diffusion, prolonging the Mg H bond length, and weakening the interaction between Mg and H. These factors synergistically enhance the absorption/desorption kinetics of MgH 2 .

Interfacial engineering of nickel/vanadium based two-dimensional layered double hydroxide for solid-state hydrogen storage in MgH2

Dongqiang Gao,Liuting Zhang,Mengchen Song,Fuying Wu,Jiao Wang,Hu Zhao,Hong Li

As a high-density solid-state hydrogen storage material, magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is promising for hydrogen transportation and storage. Yet, its stable thermodynamics and sluggish kinetics are unfavorable for that required for commercial application. Herein, nickel/vanadium trioxide (Ni/V 2 O 3 ) nanoparticles with heterostructures were successfully prepared via hydrogenating the NiV-based two-dimensional layered double hydroxide (NiV-LDH). MgH 2 + 7 wt% Ni/V 2 O 3 presented more superior hydrogen absorption and desorption performances than pure MgH 2 and MgH 2 + 7 wt% NiV-LDH. The initial discharging temperature of MgH 2 was significantly reduced to 190 °C after adding 7 wt% Ni/V 2 O 3 , which was 22 and 128 °C lower than that of 7 wt% NiV-LDH modified MgH 2 and additive-free MgH 2 , respectively. The completely dehydrogenated MgH 2 + 7 wt% Ni/V 2 O 3 charged 5.25 wt% H 2 in 20 min at 125 °C, while the hydrogen absorption capacity of pure MgH 2 only amounted to 4.82 wt% H 2 at a higher temperature of 200 °C for a longer time of 60 min. Moreover, compared with MgH 2 + 7 wt% NiV-LDH, MgH 2 + 7 wt% Ni/V 2 O 3 shows better cycling performance. The microstructure analysis indicated the heterostructural Ni/V 2 O 3 nanoparticles were uniformly distributed. Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 and metallic V were formed in-situ during cycling, which synergistically tuned the hydrogen storage process in MgH 2 . Our work presents a facile interfacial engineering method to enhance the catalytic activity by constructing a heterostructure, which may provide the mentality of designing efficient catalysts for hydrogen storage.

The dehydrogenation capacities increase to 5.86, 4.94, 3.18, and 5.74 wt% of MgH 2 –AC, MgH 2 –CNTs, MgH 2 –rGO, and MgH 2 –EG within 0.5 h, higher than MgH 2 (2.29 wt%). The final dehydrogenation capacities of MgH 2 , MgH 2 –AC, MgH 2 –CNTs, MgH 2 –rGO, and MgH 2 –EG are 2.84, 6.69, 5.14, 3.65, and 6.61 wt%. The absorption capacities of MgH 2 , MgH 2 –AC, MgH 2 –CNTs, MgH 2 –rGO, and MgH 2 –EG within 0.5 h are 2.42, 6.47, 6.21, 3.03, and 4.20 wt%, and the final hydrogenation capacities reach 2.58, 6.65, 6.33, 3.10, and 4.34 wt%. The initial kinetics and the final degrees of absorption/desorption of MgH 2 are elevated by carbon isomeric catalysts.
