Synthesis of high-voltage spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 by Mn2O3 nanosheets for lithium-ion batteries with superior cycle life span

Shentuo Zheng,Yikun Yi,Feng Hai,Xin Gao,Xiaolu Tian,Zhendi Wu,Jingyu Guo,Wei Tang,Weibo Hua,Long Qu,Mingtao Li

The development of high-voltage cobalt-free spinel LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) by conventional solid-state methods is hampered by its rapid capacity decay due to the impurity phases, inhomogeneous particle size, and dissolution of transition metals. To realize large-scale production and application of LNMO, a two-step modified solid-state method with Mn 2 O 3 nanosheets as a precursor is proposed here. The resulting material (P-LNMO) shows a reduced rock salt impurity phase and enhanced ionic transport through a more uniform control of particle size. As a result, the cycling stability of the disordered LNMO is remarkably improved, where LNMO half-cell capacity retention is 89.5 % at ambient temperature after 1000 cycles. What's more, the LNMO/Graphite full-cell is further assembled showing a discharge specific capacity of 110 mAh g −1 at 1C, and remains 97 % of its initial capacity after 100 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance indicates that this modified solid-state approach brings a new avenue to the synthesis of LNMO for the upcoming generation of commercial lithium-ion batteries.

Abiotic transformation of atrazine in aqueous phase by biogenic bixbyite-type Mn2O3 produced by a soil-derived Mn(II)-oxidizing bacterium of Providencia sp.

Jun Luo,Xiaofang Ruan,Wuying Chen,Sha Chen,Zhexu Ding,Ang Chen,Ding Li

Recently, biogenic Mn oxides (BioMnO x ) are considered as the promising degradation agents for environmental organic contaminants . However, little information is available for the degradation of atrazine by BioMnO x . In this work, BioMnO x , generated by a soil-derived Mn(II)-oxidizing bacterium, Providencia sp. LLDRA6, was explored to degrade atrazine. To begin with, collective results from mineral characterization analyses demonstrated that this BioMnO x was biogenic bixbyite-type Mn 2 O 3 . After that, purified biogenic Mn 2 O 3 was found to exhibit a much higher removal efficiency for atrazine in aqueous phase, as compared to unpurified biogenic Mn 2 O 3 and LLDRA6 biomass. During the atrazine removal by biogenic Mn 2 O 3 , six intermediate degradation products were discovered, comprising deethylatrazine (DEA), hydroxylatrazine (HA), deethylhydroxyatrazine (DEHA), ammeline, cyanuric acid , and 5-methylhexahydro-1,3,5-triazine-2-thione (MTT). Particularly, the intermediate, MTT, was considered as a new degradation product of atrazine, which was not described previously. Meanwhile, Mn(II) ions were released from biogenic Mn 2 O 3 , and on the surface of biogenic Mn 2 O 3 , the content of hydroxyl O species increased at the expense of that of lattice and water O species, but the fundamental crystalline structure of this Mn oxide remained unchanged. Additionally, no dissociative Mn(III) was found to involve in atrazine degradation. In summary, these results demonstrated that both the non-oxidative and oxidative reactions underlay the degradation of atrazine by biogenic Mn 2 O 3 .

High temperature Mn2O3/Mn3O4 and Co3O4/CoO systems for thermo-chemical energy storage

Jia Liu,Jan Baeyens,Yimin Deng,Xianlu Wang,Huili Zhang

A major action to reduce CO 2 emissions is replacing fossil fuels by renewable energy sources . Matching the energy supply and demand by the mostly intermittent renewable resources (wind, solar, wave) is hence a hot topic, and energy storage has become crucial. Thermo-chemical energy storage (TCES) has a higher energy density than sensible and latent heat storage , and allows energy to be stored in the reaction products for multiple reuse and even off-site application. Design parameters are the equilibrium temperature , the reaction heat and the reaction rate, as obtained from both thermodynamic and kinetic assessments. Equilibrium temperatures of the selected metal oxides , Mn 2 O 3 /Mn 3 O 4 and Co 3 O 4 /CoO are between 1115 K and 1179 K. The present research studies both redox reactions as examples. Commercial Mn 2 O 3 and Co 3 O 4 were previously investigated in detail, and suffer from incomplete reversibility . The present study investigates the use of self-made Mn 2 O 3 and Co 3 O 4 mesoporous particles, of micrometer or nanometer scale, respectively. The average particle size of self-made Mn 2 O 3 particles is < 5 μm, with a BET surface area of 239.7 m 2 /g, and T eq of 1177 K at ambient pressure . Self-made Co 3 O 4 was of nano size, with average size of about 100 nm, a BET surface area of 54.2 m 2 /g, and T eq of 1109 K at ambient pressure. The redox reactions of these ultrafine particles are fast and nearly fully reversible. The effect of adding inert Al 2 O 3 or Fe 2 O 3 was also studied, but proven to offer no kinetic benefit, while reducing the reaction heat due to their inert additive character. The findings were used in the design of a 10 kW TCES pilot plant that is currently being tested in a concentrated solar furnace .

Molten salt synthesis of MnO2/Mn2O3 composite as a high-performance cathode material for rechargeable button zinc‑manganese ultra-high temperature battery

Quanwei Shi,Rui Mu,Wei Zhang,Chaoyue Zhang,Zhenhe Chang,Qi Cui,Baohui Wang,Di Gu

Herein, a novel rechargeable button zinc‑manganese ultra-high temperature battery is first reported for the efficient utilization and conversion of thermal and electrical energy. The battery system uses zinc anode , Zn-K-Cl molten salt electrolyte and MnO 2 /Mn 2 O 3 composite cathode to work at 300 °C. In this study, MnO 2 /Mn 2 O 3 composites were synthesized by molten salt method, and the crystal structure of the materials was adjusted by adding reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The results showed that the spherical nanoparticles and nanobelts of MnO 2 /Mn 2 O 3 composite cathode materials increased the active sites and ion transport channels of the electrochemical reaction , thus providing high coulombic efficiency. By modifying with rGO, the MnO 2 /Mn 2 O 3 (Mn-O-2) composite cathode material exhibits excellent electrochemical performance in the button zinc‑manganese ultra-high temperature battery. The as-prepared button ultra-high temperature battery exhibits a relatively high specific capacity (300 and 175 mAh g −1 at 1 mA cm −2 and 30 mA cm −2 ) and competent cyclability (> 95 % coulombic efficiency after 50 cycles). This work firstly and systematically reveals the role of the Mn cathode materials and shows that the application in button molten salt batteries.

Biogenic α-Mn2O3 excels in areas where commercial α-Mn2O3 performs poorly: Native and advanced oxidation degradation of atrazine

Huatao Sun,Huiyan Chen,Wuying Chen,Mingzhen Hu,Sha Chen,Yingjie Ma,Runjun Ou,Ding Li

In organic degradation, a prevalent perspective that biogenic manganese oxides possess enhanced catalytic ability compared to their chemical counterparts remains experimentally unvalidated. In this study, biogenic α-Mn 2 O 3 was proven to be superior to its chemogenic counterpart in atrazine degradation. In native degradation, biogenic α-Mn 2 O 3 achieved a 35.39–65.09 % degradation efficiency, while commercial α-Mn 2 O 3 showed no such ability. This is because biogenic α-Mn 2 O 3 generated greater amounts of reactive oxygen species than commercial α-Mn 2 O 3 (the contribution order for atrazine degradation was 1 O 2 > • OH >> O 2 •−) . In advanced oxidation, only periodate was efficiently activated by biogenic α-Mn 2 O 3 , achieving a 79.79 % degradation efficiency. Comparatively, the corresponding efficiency for commercial α-Mn 2 O 3 was 18.58 %. This discrepancy is due to the significantly higher levels of • OH and O 2 •− generation in the biogenic α-Mn 2 O 3 /periodate system (the contribution order was • OH > O 2 •− ). Importantly, the (332 ) and (222) crystal planes of biogenic α-Mn 2 O 3 exhibited a higher catalytic ability than the (211) plane in activating periodate to produce • OH and O 2 •− . The N(8)-C(10), C(17)-C(23), and N(9)-C(17) bonds in atrazine were susceptible to attack by • OH, while the C(3)-Cl(7) bond was liable to be attacked by O 2 •− , ultimately resulting in the formation of seven intermediates.

Three-dimensionally Ordered Macroporous Structure Enabled Nanothermite Membrane of Mn2O3/Al

Zheng Guoqiang,Zhang Wenchao,Shen Ruiqi,Ye Jiahai,Qin Zhichun,Chao Yimin

Mn 2 O 3 has been selected to realize nanothermite membrane for the first time in the literature. Mn 2 O 3 /Al nanothermite has been synthesized by magnetron sputtering a layer of Al film onto three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) Mn 2 O 3 skeleton. The energy release is significantly enhanced owing to the unusual 3DOM structure, which ensures Al and Mn 2 O 3 to integrate compactly in nanoscale and greatly increase effective contact area. The morphology and DSC curve of the nanothermite membrane have been investigated at various aluminizing times. At the optimized aluminizing time of 30 min, energy release reaches a maximum of 2.09 kJ∙g −1 , where the Al layer thickness plays a decisive role in the total energy release. This method possesses advantages of high compatibility with MEMS and can be applied to other nanothermite systems easily, which will make great contribution to little-known nanothermite research.

A novel strategy for promoting PMS activation: Enhanced utilization of side reactions

Lulu Long,Changwei Bai,Xinyu Zhou,Shirong Zhang,Yanzong Zhang,Chao Chen,Jingsong He,Chun Song,Gang Yang

This study proposed a novel strategy to improve the activation efficiency of PMS by enhancing the utilization of side reactions. Electrocatalysis and PMS activation were coupled in the anode chamber. The electrons were extracted from the catalyst through the electroanode, and the excess low valence elements in the system were converted into high valence elements. Without restricting the activation of PMS, the activation efficiency of PMS was more effectively and comprehensively improved by enhancing the utilization of side reactions. An efficient electrocatalytic anode/Mn 2 O 3 /rGO/peroxymonosulfate (ECA/Mn 2 O 3 /rGO/PMS) system was established with Mn 2 O 3 /rGO as the anode. In this system, the anode current improved the catalyst utilization, which directly converts the excess rGO-C = O, Mn(II) and Mn(III) into rGO-C + -O, Mn(III) and Mn(IV), thereby increasing the yields of •OH, SO 4 • - , and 1 O 2 during PMS activation. Overall, this study provides a novel strategy for improving the activation efficiency of PMS, and has great potential to be widely applied in actual environment remediation.

Pore-confined and pore size-dependent peroxymonosulfate activation mechanism for MOF-derived Mn2O3

Sheng Tian,Wenhao Liu,Yulun Nie,Chao Yang,Jianbo Shi

Conventional Mn 2 O 3 catalysts, typically synthesized via co-precipitation using inorganic precursors, exhibit satisfactory peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation efficiency depending on their structure and Mn valence. However, the interplay between pore architecture and intrinsic activity remains poorly understood, limiting rational design of Mn 2 O 3 . Herein, a series of Mn 2 O 3 catalysts with tunable pore sizes (1.6–16.2 nm) and Mn valence states were synthesized via pyrolysis of three distinct Mn-MOF precursors (Mn-BDC, Mn-MOF-74, Mn-BTC) at different temperatures. Among eight MOF-derived Mn 2 O 3 , BDC-400 with the largest pore-size derived from Mn-BDC calcined at 400℃ demonstrated superior performance, achieving 93.5% sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal via PMS activation. Its degradation rate constant (0.0237 min⁻¹) was 1.45–3.34 times higher than those of catalysts with smaller pores (ranging from1.6–12.6 nm). Counterintuitively, multiple linear regression identified pore size, not Mn(III) content, as the dominant performance descriptor (β = 0.784). This is demonstrated as a pore-size-sieving effect by HA interference experiments and contact angle measurements: larger pores (e.g., 16.2 nm in BDC-400) drastically reduce mass transfer barriers for PMS/SMX, facilitating their access to the Mn(III)-enriched confined interior and thereby maximizing radical (SO₄•⁻/•OH) generation. This work shifts the design paradigm, demonstrating that engineering pore architecture to mitigate diffusion limitations is as critical as optimizing active sites for developing high-performance catalysts.

Visible-Light-Driven In2O3/Mn2O3 Z-Scheme Boosts PMS Activation Toward Tetracycline Removal

Shuai Wang,Xiaona Liu,Yang Yang,Tianwei Dou,XiongWei Liang,Changhao Yao,Xiaofan Zhao,Baojiang Jiang

Photocatalytic persulfate (PMS) activation has gained significant attention for environmental remediation. Despite progress, developing efficient, sustainable photocatalysts remains challenging. We report a solvothermally synthesized In 2 O 3 /Mn 2 O 3 Z-scheme heterojunction with subsequent ion impregnation. This novel photocatalyst demonstrates exceptional PMS activation under visible light, achieving 95.2% tetracycline (TC) degradation within 120 min. The enhanced performance stems from intimate interfacial contact in the Z-scheme configuration, facilitating rapid photogenerated charge transfer. Furthermore, PMS serves dual roles as radical precursor and electron scavenger, promoting generation of reactive radicals for TC degradation. This work presents an advanced Z-scheme photocatalyst system offering efficient organic pollutant removal, with potential applications in water purification technologies.

A new catalytic performance of Mn2O3 nanorods for reduction of aromatic nitro compounds

Ying Wang,Xiao-Yu Ye,Guo-Zhi Han

The reduction of aromatic nitro compounds is the simplest and most widely used method for preparing aniline compounds, and widely used in chemistry , biology, medicine, dyes, and so on. Among them, reduction of aromatic nitro compounds by sodium borohydride usually requires noble metal-based catalyst, which results in difficulty in industrial application. In this letter, we report a discovery that the Mn 2 O 3 nanorods can replace noble metal nanoparticles to efficiently catalyze the reduction of aromatic nitro compounds with different types of substituents by NaBH 4 , and moderate to excellent yields were obtained. By studying the similar catalytic performance of different manganese oxide materials, we proposed a plausible catalytic mechanism. Our discovery will open up new applications of manganese oxide materials in the field of catalysis.

Suppressing Jahn–Teller distortion in Mn2O3 via Ca2+ doping for aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Yujie Shen,Qian Hu,Ruoyu Liu,Pingle Tang,Zhenyu Wang,Jing Hu,Botian Liu,Liqing He,Ningchen Tian,Qing Zhu

Ca 2+ doping suppresses Jahn–Teller distortion in Mn 2 O 3 via charge compensation. • Ca 2+ -doped Mn 2 O 3 achieves 118.1 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g −1 . • Accelerated Zn 2+ diffusion and reduced charge transfer resistance are achieved. Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have gained significant attention owing to their high energy densities, low costs, and good safety. However, developing cathodes with high capacity and structural stability remains challenging. Herein, we propose a Ca 2+ doping strategy to design a high-performance Mn 2 O 3 cathode via a facile hydrothermal-calcination method. The Ca 2+ substitution has a dual functional effect: 1) it triggers charge compensation that converts partial Mn 3+ to Mn 4+ , decreasing the Mn 3+ / Mn 4+ ratio and reducing Jahn–Teller active centers; 2) it shortens the Mn O bonds, thereby reinforcing the Mn O framework and stabilizing the crystal structure. Consequently, in pure ZnSO 4 electrolyte, the optimized Ca 2+ doped cathode (CMO7) delivers a high specific capacity of 214.7 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 , far surpassing pristine Mn 2 O 3 (102.3 mAh g −1 ). In a hybrid ZnSO 4 /MnSO 4 electrolyte, CMO7 achieves a higher capacity of 227.8 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 and retains 88% of its capacity after 500 cycles at 1000 mA g −1 . This study provides a new perspective on the development of advanced Mn-based cathodes for durable aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Ligand-Engineered Mn-MOFs Derived Mn2O3 for Enhanced Carbon Dioxide Conversion to Ethylene Urea

Junxi Tang,Yue Zhang,Jun Yin,Yiwen Chen,Guocheng Deng,Yulong Jin,Jie Xu,Bing Xue,Fei Wang

The utilization of carbon dioxide (CO2) for synthesizing value-added chemicals represents a promising environmentally sustainable strategy. Herein, we synthesized a series of Mn2O3catalysts derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) incorporating three different ligands—homophthalic tricarboxylic acid (H3BTC), 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (H2BDC), and a combination of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) with H3BTC—via a hydrothermal method for ethylene urea (EU) production from CO2and ethylenediamine (EDA). The Mn2O3catalyst derived from the H3BTC+PVP ligand system (designated MnTP) demonstrated superior catalytic performance, achieving 97% EDA conversion and 97% EU selectivity under mild conditions (100 °C, 1 min), which surpassed all previously reported catalysts under comparable conditions. The enhanced activity originated from structural improvements induced by the H3BTC+PVP precursors, particularly the promotion of oxygen vacancies and Mn3+species, thereby facilitating efficient CO2activation and binding. This work establishes a novel strategy for the sustainable conversion of CO2into high-value cyclic ureas through rational catalyst design.
