Mo2C Electrocatalysts for Kinetically Boosting Polysulfide Conversion in Quasi-Solid-State Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Yu-Jiao Zhang,Zhen-Yu Xing,Wen-Peng Wang,Ning Gao,Jie Zhao,Wen-Ce Yue,Xue Li,Yi-Bo Gao,Sen Xin,Bao Li,Bao Wang

Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) suffer from sluggish reaction kinetics of sulfur-containing species and loss of soluble polysulfides (PSs) during cycling, especially in the case of liquid electrolytes. Here, we improve the kinetics of sulfur species by decorating Mo2C nanoparticles on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the host for sulfur active mass. In addition, by use of gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) derived from in situ polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) to mitigate the diffusion of PSs and improve the stability of Li stripping/plating. As a result, the sulfur cathodes are endowed with enhanced initial specific capacity and suppressed dissolution of sulfur species. The cells with CNT/Mo2C/S cathodes and GPE exhibit excellent electrochemical performance. The anodes cycled with GPE show remarkably enhanced lithium plating-stripping behavior. Benefitting from the synergistic effect, LSBs with higher energy density and improved durability are obtained, demonstrating a new approach for developing high-performance quasi-solid-state Li metal batteries.

Magnetic reinforcement of electrocatalytic HER performance on Keplerate polyoxomolybdate-derived multi-interfacial FeMo/Mo2C@C catalyst

Hongyu Li,Ting Wang,Ming Xu,Ping Wang,Ze Gao,Wenjing Zhang,Mei Liu,Ming Feng

Electrocatalysis is a promising approach for sustainable hydrogen generation, and the exploration of effective electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) is of great significance for exploiting and utilizing renewable energy. Herein, the magnetic FeMo/Mo 2 C@C composites with multi-heterostructure interfaces and hierarchical structure are first designed and fabricated via molybdenum blue preassembly strategy by using Keplerate polyoxomolybdate {Mo 72 Fe 30 } and melamine as precursors. Benefiting from its unique characteristics, FeMo/Mo 2 C@C catalyst exhibits superior HER electrocatalytic activity than pure Mo 2 C@C. Interestingly, the optimized FeMo/Mo 2 C@C presents the HER magnetic reinforcement by simply applying an magnetic field, characteristic of 97 mV@10 mA cm –2 , 201 mV@50 mA cm –2 , and a robust durability for more than 18 h, which are 120 and 85 mV less than that of FeMo/Mo 2 C@C without magnetization, and greatly lower than comparative Mo 2 C@C catalyst (272 mV@10 mA cm –2 and 396 mV@50 mA cm –2 ). This may be attributed to that the FeMo/Mo 2 C@C can afford fast electrons transmitting from electrode to active sites during HER process when imposing an external magnetic field. This work offers a novel design direction to develop magnetic transition metal based-materials for electrochemical applications and paves a new way to utilize the magnetic enhancement to further improve the hydrogen evolution performance.

Mo2C-MoO2 Heterostructure Quantum Dots for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction to Ammonia

Yuchi Wan,Zhijie Wang,Jia Li,Ruitao Lv

The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) has been regarded as a promising strategy for producing ammonia (NH3) at ambient conditions. However, the development of the NRR is severely hindered by the difficult adsorption and activation of N2 on the catalyst surface and the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to the lack of efficient NRR electrocatalysts. Herein, Mo2C-MoO2 heterostructure quantum dots embedded in reduced graphene oxide (RGO) are proposed as efficient catalysts for the electrocatalytic NRR. The ultrasmall size of the quantum dot is beneficial for exposing the active sites for the NRR, and the synergetic effect of Mo2C and MoO2 can promote N2 adsorption and activation and suppress the competitive HER simultaneously. As a result, a well-balanced NRR performance is achieved with a high NH3 yield rate of 13.94 ± 0.39 μg h–1 mg–1 at −0.15 V vs RHE and a high Faradaic efficiency of 12.72 ± 0.58% at −0.1 V vs RHE. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Mo2C (001) surface has a strong N2 adsorption energy of −1.47 eV with the side-on configuration, and the N≡N bond length is elongated to 1.254 Å, indicating the enhanced N2 adsorption and activation on the Mo2C surface. On the other hand, the low ΔGH* for HER over the MoO2 (−111) surface demonstrates the impeded HER process for MoO2. This work may provide effective catalyst-design strategies for enhancing the electrocatalytic NRR performance of Mo-based materials.

Construction and performance of CdS/MoO2@Mo2C-MXene photocatalyst for H2 production

Jin Sen,Jing Huijuan,Wang Libo,Hu Qianku,Zhou Aiguo

Nowadays, photocatalytic technologies are regarded as promising strategies to solve energy problems, and various photocatalysts have been synthesized and explored. In this paper, a novel CdS/MoO 2 @Mo 2 C-MXene photocatalyst for H 2 production was constructed by a two-step hydrothermal method, where MoO 2 @Mo 2 C-MXene acted as a binary co-catalyst. In the first hydrothermal step, MoO 2 crystals with an egged shape grew on the surface of two-dimensional (2D) Mo 2 C MXene via an oxidation process in HCl aqueous solution. In the second hydrothermal step, CdS nanorods were uniformly assembled on the surface of MoO 2 @Mo 2 C-MXene in ethylenediamine with an inorganic cadmium source and organic sulfur source. The CdS/MoO 2 @Mo 2 C-MXene composite with MoO 2 @Mo 2 C-MXene of 5 wt% exhibits an ultrahigh visible-light photocatalytic H 2 production activity of 22,672 µmol/(g·h), which is ∼21% higher than that of CdS/Mo 2 C-MXene. In the CdS/MoO 2 @Mo 2 C-MXene composite, the MoO 2 with metallic nature separates CdS and Mo 2 C MXene, which acts as an electron-transport bridge between CdS and Mo 2 C MXene to accelerate the photoinduced electron transferring. Moreover, the energy band structure of CdS was changed by MoO 2 @Mo 2 C-MXene to suppress the recombination of photogenerated carriers. This novel compound delivers upgraded photocatalytic H 2 evolution performance and a new pathway of preparing the low-cost photocatalyst to solve energy problems in the future.

Nitrogen-doped carbon wrapped Co-Mo2C dual Mott–Schottky nanosheets with large porosity for efficient water electrolysis

Pengfei Zhang,Yaoda Liu,Tingting Liang,Edison Huixiang Ang,Xu Zhang,Fei Ma,Zhengfei Dai

Efficient, inexpensive and stable electrocatalysts are challenging and desperately required in order to complement the water electrolysis of noble metal catalysts. Herein, a porous nitrogen-doped carbon wrapped Co-Mo 2 C dual Mott–Schottky heterostructure has been successfully fabricated by carbonization of Co-Zn bimetal metal-organic framework (MOF) for water electrolysis. The heterostructure is found to feature with Co and Mo 2 C nanoparticles uniformly encapsulated in the highly porous leaf-like N-doped carbon nanosheet matrix. Such a thin porous dual-Mott–Schottky configuration can afford abundant surface active sites and the boosted electron transfer to promote the water splitting. As for hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER), it has demonstrated fast kinetics and low overpotentials of 92 mV (HER) and 338 mV (OER) at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. Furthermore, the overall water splitting is stably delivered with a low cell voltage of 1.68 V at 10 mA cm -2 in 1 M KOH. Density function theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the interface correlation is favorable to water transfer by electron and speeds up adsorption and water dissociation. The work here opens up interesting possibilities for the rational design and innovation of MOF derived Mott–Schottky electrocatalysts for highly efficient water electrolysis.

Ultrasmall Mo2C in N-doped carbon material from bimetallic ZnMo-MOF for efficient hydrogen evolution

Yuanyuan Guo,Qi Huang,Junyang Ding,Li Zhong,Ting-Ting Li,Yue Hu,Jinjie Qian,Shaoming Huang

The exploration and development of cost-effective and highly stable electrocatalysts with the highest possible energy efficiency remain a constant pursuit in the catalyst design and synthesis for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, a convenient approach is proposed to synthesize a type of ultrafine Mo 2 C nanoparticles in average sizes of 3–4 nm embedded in hierarchically porous N-doped carbon material calcined from bimetallic ZnMo-MI (MI = 2-methylimidazole) is obtained at 1000 °C, denoted as ZnMo-MI-1000 . First of all, the crystalline hybrid metal-organic framework of ZnMo-MI is fabricated from zeolitic imidazolate framework of Zn-MI precursors via solvothermal reaction, in which the conversion from Zn-MI to ZnMo-MI occurs gradually over time. After calcination , the as-obtained ZnMo-MI-1000 sample shows a satisfying HER performance with the small overpotential of 83.0 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 100.1 mV in 1.0 M KOH to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which is attributed to ultrasmall Mo 2 C, Mo and N-doped graphitic carbon matrix. The multiporous network of ZnMo-MI-1000 can provide continuous mass transportation with a minimal diffusion resistance that produce effective electrocatalytic kinetics in both acidic and alkaline media , which is utilized as a highly active and durable nonprecious metal electrocatalyst for HER.

Bimetallic Co/Mo2C Nanoparticles Embedded in 3D Hierarchical N-doped Carbon Heterostructures as Highly Efficient Electrocatalysts for Water Splitting

Jinxu Zhang,Xueping P. Sun,Peng Wei,Gongchang Lu,Shixiong X. Sun,Yue Xu,Chun Fang,Qing Li,Jiantao T. Han

Graphical Bifunctional electrocatalysts : The bimetallic Co/Mo 2 C nanoparticles wrapped in N-doped carbon heterostructures can significantly boost the OER and HER performance for the modulation of the intrinsic electronic structures and construction of the geometric structures. This work not only provides a facile and practical strategy to construct an affordable and highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst but also inspires future work in the rational design of composites and nanostructures. Modulating intrinsic electronic and geometric structures of bimetallic electrocatalysts has been regarded as a promising strategy to effectively solve the sluggish kinetics and large overpotential of OER (Oxygen evolution reaction) and HER (Hydrogen evolution reaction) involved in future large-scale electricity-to-hydrogen generation. Here, the bifunctional Co/Mo 2 C electrocatalysts encapsulated in 3D hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers synchronously rooted with abundant carbon nanotubes (Co/Mo 2 C-NCNTs) were successfully fabricated by a facile electrospinning method. Due to the unique heterostructures and strong synergetic effects between Co and Mo 2 C nanoparticles to improve OH − affinity, moderate Mo−H bonds, and expose more active sites, the Co/Mo 2 C-NCNTs displayed a tiny overpotential for OER ( η 10 =310 mV) and HER ( η 10 =170 mV) and stably operated for 24 h. Moreover, the results of a water electrolysis device demonstrated that the faradaic efficiency was close to 100 %, which further proved that this method was feasible and effective to fabricate high-efficiency bifunctional non-noble electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Scalable synthesis of Mo2C/CNT networks as highly efficient and stable electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Yang Hu,Deng-gao Guan,Bo Yu,Wenqiang Hou,Binjie Zheng,Wanli Zhang,Yuanfu Chen

The efficient generation of clean hydrogen energy through the water splitting has attracted much more attention. However, lacking of low-cost and highly efficient electrocatalysts is still a major obstacle for hydrogen generation via hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, for the first time, we present a facile, low-cost and scalable synthesis of highly efficient and stable Mo 2 C/CNT hybrid via spray drying followed by carbonization process (Mo 2 C/CNT-SC). The optimized Mo 2 C/CNT-SC hybrid delivers superior HER performance with a low Tafel slop of 53.6 mV dec −1 , and an extremely low onset overpotential of ∼20 mV (vs RHE) @ 1 mA cm −2 , which is much lower than those of most reported electrocatalysts and comparable to that of Pt-based electrocatalysts. The Mo 2 C/CNT-SC hybrid also shows excellent stability even after 1000 cycles. The superior HER performance of Mo 2 C/CNT-SC can be attributed to its unique conductive and porous structure constructed by ultrasmall Mo 2 C nanoparticles homogenously embedded in CNT networks, which can not only provide sufficient HER active sites, but also guarantee full contact between the Mo 2 C nanoparticles and CNT networks. The principles demonstrated in our work can be extended to scalable synthesis of other non-noble metal electrocatalysts with excellent HER performance.

Facile Route to Achieve Co@Mo2C Encapsulated by N-Doped Carbon as Efficient Electrocatalyst for Overall Water Splitting in Alkaline Media

Usman Ali,Yue Yu,Jinrui Guo,Yuqi Liu,Zhongcheng Mu,Shuangxi Xing

The development of inexpensive, highly efficient and stable noble metal-free heterostructure bifunctional electrocatalysts is crucial for water electrolysis. Herein, a facile strategy is utilized by pyrolyzing the mixture containing ammonium molybdate tetrahydrate and zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 to achieve a product with Co nanoparticles as core and β-Mo2C embedded in N-doped carbon as a shell (Co@β-Mo2C-NC). The Co@β-Mo2C-NC-0.115 (quantity of Mo precursor) composite illustrates an overpotential (η10) of 188 and 330 mV for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, respectively, and a cell voltage of 1.72 V is required for overall water splitting to attain a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in alkaline media. Remarkably, the Co@β-Mo2C-NC-0.115 catalyst exhibits excellent stability for continuous operation of 15 h chronopotentiometry and 25 h chronoamperometry measurements. The satisfactory electrocatalytic performance can be ascribed to the unique core–shell nanostructure, especially the synergistic effect between Co, β-Mo2C and N-doped carbon. These research findings speculate a straightforward strategy to fabricate MOF derived heterostructures with robust catalytic performance and wide applications in electrocatalysis.

Insight into the key factors of β-Mo2C catalyst for the reverse water gas shift reaction

Qingshan Rong,Wei Ding,Guogang Liu,Xiangyu Fu,Yan Shi,Zhiqiang Zhang,Zhiwei Yao

In this study, we found that β-Mo2C prepared at different carbonization temperatures exhibited significantly different catalytic activities for the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction. The β-Mo2C synthesized at 600 °C demonstrated notably higher activity compared to those prepared at 700 °C and 800 °C. This enhanced activity was likely attributed to its improved redox properties, which were primarily driven by a smaller crystallite size and the presence of MoxOCy species. Therefore, we proposed that the crystallite size and MoxOCy content were the key factors governing the RWGS activity of β-Mo2C. Clearly, both factors were strongly influenced by the carbonization temperature. Notably, the β-Mo2C prepared at 600 °C even outperformed Cu-doped β-Mo2C prepared at 700 °C under similar reaction conditions.

Xiao Yang,Rong Qiang,Yulong Shao,Fangjie Ren,Lei Rong,Jingbo Fang,Rui Xue,Zihan Liu

With the advancement of modern electronic communication technology, the development of efficient absorbing materials has attracted great interest. Here, hollow hydrangea-like Mo 2 C/MoO 2 /C composites are synthesized by soft template method. By adjusting the pyrolysis temperature, Mo 2 C/MoO 2 /C composites with different Mo 2 C and MoO 2 contents and degrees of graphitization can be selectively synthesized. The Mo 2 C/MoO 2 /C-800 composite with the 30 wt% filler content exhibits a minimum reflection loss of −62.9 dB at 1.6 mm and achieves a maximum absorption bandwidth of 6.2 GHz at 1.9 mm. The interaction between the dielectric properties of each component and the unique 3D hydrangea-like structure promotes microwave absorption and dissipation. Besides, CST simulation further demonstrates the effectiveness of electromagnetic wave dissipation in practical applications. The excellent properties of the hydrangea-like Mo 2 C/MoO 2 /C composites indicate their promising applications in electromagnetic wave absorbers.

Mo2C interface layer: effect on the interface strength and cutting performance of diamond/Fe-Ni-WC composites

Xinyue Mao,Qingnan Meng,Mu Yuan,Sifan Wang,Shiyin Huang,Baochang Liu

The weak interfacial strength between Fe-based matrix and diamonds causes diamond particles to fall off prematurely, significantly affecting the cutting efficiency of diamond composites. This work aimed to optimize the interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties of the diamond/Fe-Ni-WC composites by coating a Mo 2 C layer on the diamond particles. The Mo 2 C-coated diamonds were prepared via the molten salt method. Diamond/Fe-Ni-WC composites were sintered by the hot-pressing process under a vacuum. The bending strength of composites with Mo 2 C-coated diamonds was improved from 804 to 996 MPa with the increased coating time. The energy dispersive spectroscopy scanning indicated that the Mo 2 C coating layer changed the interfacial composition between the matrix and the diamonds from Fe–C alloy to Mo 2 C, improving the interface strength. Moreover, the diamond protrusion heights of composites were raised by adding a Mo 2 C interface, resulting in an improvement in the cutting efficiency of impregnated diamond tools.
